Car History - What have you had?

Alex-W

Recommended Posts

I'm intrigued...  I'm getting the impression on here that most people have a high turnover of pretty stock, normal cars, which is somewhat contrary to what I've seen on other forums.

My History is fairly short and sweet -

0.  Spent the first few years driving a Citroen Saxo and Ax (not mine) while I was at Uni.

1. '94 Rover 216 Coupe - 109bhp D16 SOHC Honda Engine.  Modded with various stuff inc Koni Adjustables and Cat Back Exhaust.  Was a great car, esp for £1300.

2. '99 Honda Accord Type R  - 209bhp Honda H22.  Bought for £5k in 2007.  Pretty standard as it was my daily car for 12 years.  Still have it.  Still great fun.  Mild mods planned.

3.  '96 Mazda MX-3 1.6  -The wife's old car.  Underpowered but underrated, handled like a go-kart with a huge boot.  Bought for £650 and worked with zero issues for 6 years before selling for £375.  Bargain motoring!

4. '11 Mazda 6 Sport - 180bhp Diesel.   Top spec, leather, keyless entry, eletric everything.   The wife's car and our family mile muncher.

5.  Octavia vRS PFL 230 - You know the spec.  The present daily.   Plans to keep long term.  No mods planned as that's what the Honda is for.

Not sure there's enough space for the cars I've had since I was 17!!!

Ok, It's lunchtime at work so had a quick trawl through the cars that I can remember - I'm sure there's a few missing but here goes.........

1978 Mini 1000, added white Weller wheels :-)

1979 Fiesta 950
1978 Capri 1600GL - added a cherrybomb exhaust
1983 Sierra 1.6GL - it fell apart
1980 Polo 1.1 - it fell apart
1986 Fiesta 1.1
1986 Orion 1.6GL  - bright yellow
1988 Mini 1000 ,had 1330 engine built from scratch by Green & White, it looked like a Cooper, white with black roof and Minilites, then it was stolen
1990 Mini Cooper 1.3 Carb version
1992 Rover 216SLi - this was awesome with the Honda engine
2000 Clio 1.2, what a pile of crap
1999 Bora V5 - aweome car!
2005 Fiesta 1.4 + 1986 Golf 1.6GL + 1988 Golf GTi 16V all at the same time, all crap
2006 Ibiza 1.8T
2006 Fabia vRS - first ever diesel and one or my favourites
1978 Spitfire 1500 - had this for a few years, beautiful car but had to sell when we moved house due to lack of garage space
2008 Tucson 4x4 2.0 Diesel - no idea why I bought this!
2008 Civic 2.2 CDTi - fantastic engine
2010 Octavia 1.6 TDI - bland, slow, boring but a million miles to the gallon
2012 Octavia 2.0 vRS TDI - awesome!
2013 Fabia 1.4 vRS DSg - rubbish!
2012 Superb 1.6 TDI SE - very nice
2013 Leon 1.4 FR - great engine
2014 Leon 2.0 184 TDI DSG
2015 Leon 1.4 FR DSG
2016 Leon 1.8 FR DSG
2017 Leon 1.4 FR DSG
2017 Octavia vRS 230 TSI DSG, best car ever
2018 Civic 1.5T CVT, very nice car but the infotainment system is appalling
2019 Octavia 2.0 190 TSI DSG SEL  - current car, liking it so far, it's quick and surprising very economical

Not sure what will be next!!, either another Octy vRS DSG or a Superb 220 TSI DSG

You can see there's a trend towards SEAT/Skoda!! Can't beat them for value/practicality/equipment/performance!

0 - Ford Escort  (parent's car while I was at uni, I drive during holidays)

1 - Volvo S40 mk 1 1.8l petrol manual fully loaded (hand-me-down parent's car), driven about 40k in it, unfortunately written off by a drunk driver 1 day before I was away for a month

2 - Volvo S40 mk 2 1.6l petrol manual spartan spec (Dad found and bought this while I was away after mk1 was written off and need another car imminently on return) didn't like the spec but Dad preferred the simplicity, so he took it back and I traded their car for:

3 - Mercedes C220 sportscoupe auto mid-level-spec, first car I chose, enjoyable drive, love RWD feel, did over 60k in it, traded it in to start a family

4.1 - Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG Elegance almost fully loaded, for long distance drives or when wife want to use the local runabout EV

4.2 - Nissan Leaf 24kWh EV top spec, our daily driver, either I drive it to work (costing £1.50 instead of £6 in Skoda) or wife drive it locally.

Leaf EV is the best car I've owned, instant torque and effortless drives, I'm fully converted to electric now. Looking forward to replacing Skoda with a RWD EV.

Agreed.  Same engine as my old one, but in the 5dr hatchback rather than coupe.

Mine took a hammering every day and never missed a beat, despite being on 100k+

In some ways I wish I'd kept it and done the DOHC swap as that was 25bhp more and tunable to about 160 bhp.

Christ, bet they'd be worth loads now.  I've always wanted to have a go in one.

My mum's old 1.1 echo was slow as hell with terrible (scary) brakes but a total laugh to drive and so so light.  The GT had to be brilliant fun, if somewhat lethal in an accident.

Only 85bhp but very light (3 bolts holding the alloy on the hub for example) and it could keep up with a friends 96bhp Fiesta XR2.:thumbup:Then I drove a 115bhp  Peugeot 205GTi and realised fuel injection was the future.:D

Just added another one. I suspect I'm a bit older than you and I restored one or two of the stranger vehicles. I rather liked Marinas, Itals and Minors. If I could get a late model Ital I probably would but there are very few left now.

And then things went really quiet and boring, on the eve of moving to France after spending a week shoving everything into the alhambra and my trailer my chauffeur pal offered me his:

Skoda Octavia MK1 1.9tdi Estate  too cheap to ignore, gave me a couple of grand in pocket after selling the Alhambra, only intended keeping it a year till it broke and getting shot of it.

It was not meant to be, despite all the abuse it refused to die and I took it up to 325000 miles during my toughest years financially.

Finally last year it was replaced by...............

Skoda Octavia MK2 1.9TDi Estate :D

Same spec, same colour, I even am using the 15 year old touch up pen!!!

From always chopping and changing cars I have now stuck with skoda and expect this one to last me another 10 years.

Since 2004, daily drivers...

-1992 Mazda 323 1.3 LXi (died after I didn't check the oil)

-1997 Citroen Saxo 1.4 SX in Barry Boy Blue (sold it)

-1998 Citroen Saxo 1.6 VTR in white. Lowered, 6x9s, stupid stereo (money pit, sold it)

-2000 Seat Arosa 1.0 in bright yellow. A stop gap due to the Saxo fiasco (part exd)

-2003 Skoda Superb 1.8t Comfort. Ex police, in green. Brought me to Briskoda. (Handed back to finance company)

-2006 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi SRi 150bhp in black. Had it a year, gearknob kept falling off, had new swirl flaps, wasn't great. (Part exd)

-2005 Volvo S60 2.0t Sport in grey. Absolute money pit. Cambelt snapped, ruined engine. Paid for it to be fixed then handed back to finance company.

-2007 Kia Cee'd 1.6 SR in bronze. Great car, no major faults, put lots of miles on. (Part exd)

-2007 Ford S-Max 2.0 tdci Titanium in bronze. A great handling people carrier let down by a rubbish engine. Injectors kept failing so part exd.

-2014 Kia Optima 1.7 diesel '3'. A sexy looking car in white with all the toys but the engine was pants with no go and a gremlin that kept causing a lack of power. (Part exd)

-2011 Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI SE 170bhp DSG. Great car, loads of room but a magnet for crashes. 3 accidents in a year so part exd and got rid!

-2011 Jaguar XJ L 3.0d Portfolio. My current car with all the toys and I love it! High mileage and has been expensive to repair (intake manifolds, alternator, general maintenance) but my favourite car I've owned.

Since 2004- toys.

-1998 BMW 740i in blue. Bought as a toy as I wanted a luxo barge. Great for it's time and fun. Didn't get used so sold it on.

-2003 Daihatsu Copen 0.66 in black with red leather. Always wanted one so bought one. Needed a new turbo and cost a lot so in the end sold it for a huge loss. Should have kept it.

-2006 Smart Forfour Brabus in Silver. Current toy, just over 50k miles with quite a few modifications by all accounts. Has about 230bhp, better front seats, lowered a bit, intake, better stereo and aftermarket wheels. Sitting on my mums driveway at the minute and up for sale.
