MFD2 is IN...............

Featured Replies

Ok gents time for an MFD2/Octy II info update!!!

Those of you who have fitted one without coding it to your car will probably find that you are running around with some fault codes stored.

The CANBUS Gateway simply needs to be told that you now have an additional controller, the Navigation Unit (37).

Not a massive issue but one which will obviously need to be resolved eventually.

So far I have sorted mine and Chris's, Steve's will be when his unit arrives and Ian if you drop me a line I'll do yours for you. Anyone else locally or at any meets just ask.

Lift out the top storage box and there is ample access to the main crash bar - ideal for sticking GPS antenna to!! :D

All ok then Chris??

Stereo does'nt sound as good as the original might have to play about a bit with the bass and treble but really impressed overall:thumbup: .

Stereo quality isn't as good as the Stream unit but you can't have your cake AND eat it now can you?

Incidentally, my MaxiDot threw a total wobbly today when I asked it to display the navigation data, it basically jammed up and the only way to free it up was to turn the nav unit off and them kill the igntion.

Maybe it's connected with the CANBUS issue.

Ok you guys what is the avarage price for one of these units?

How long do they take to fit?

What other bits do I need to buy?

Or would it be easyer to buy a tom tom 910.

Average ebay price is anything between £350 and £450 for a decent quality CD MFD2 with Skoda colour (green) lighting etc.

They take about an hour to fit at the most, maybe more depending on where you shove the GPS antenna. And you need a T20 Torx driver to remove the Stream.

You'll also need a different trim surround for the unit, go for the silver!

There are countless posts covering every tiny detail about the job but I've covered the basic stuff for you.

400 to 500 notes off ebay, possibly with "evaluation" or "test" cdrs, possibly with aerial.

'parrently pretty straightforward to do it but I am not comfy with this sort of stuff so, if I ever get into a position to afford one, a kindly briskoda gent might assist for a reasonable fee...?

Come along to a local meet (particularly when VRStu is in attendance ;) ) and you will be assisted

They are nice and easy to put in. Probably the most difficult/annoying part is removing the original fascia.

...even I could do it?.

I would agree. Feels like it is going to snap but then hey presto and don't use the new one as a guide as the clips are different.

Yes I am sure even you could do it. :P

I did mine originally in the car park at work and I paid less than 300 minus postage but including "test disk", GPS aerial and serial number.

Interestingly whilst looking at some pictures of the soon to be released facelifted VW Touran I noticed that the sat nav unit was a touch screen version, looked almost identical to the MFD 2 fitted to most new VW/Skodas.

Could this be the MFD3?

How do i remove the top storage box ?

I currently have the Arial on top of the dash (just by the ticket clip)

Regarding some of the earlier posts around the sound quality.

My personal opinion is that it sounds better than the Stream in my car. I do have upgraded speakers over the standard ones so maybe that helps but to my jaded ears it is an improvement.

In my case a bonus.

I use a trim removal tool wedged in the front edge of the box and lever it out.

Hi,

I have been following this thread with interest.

I have an Octy Elegance on order, did not want to order SatNav as seemed far too much.

Does sound very useful though if obtainable cheaper.

It seems there are 3 sources of the MFD-2

a) UK based for about

a) Should be.

B) Probably secondhand. I believe these europeon ones must originate from some sort of repair or manufacturing facility. There are too many to be stolen. As all the units are Blaupunkt, this could be feasible.

c) See above

Most will come with a copied map CD, so yes you need to buy an original.

If you decide to get one oustside of the dealers, choose the seller carefully and read their feedback, as much feedback as you can. Might also be an idea to get it delivered elsewhere and not home, that way the person selling the MFD2 wont know where you live and come back one night to steal it back again.

Do you have a piccy of the box out of the car?

It's good to know where the clips are and where to prod. I am going to have a go at hiding the aerial this week.

The 'clips' are approx 2cm from the edges along the bottom (actually just part of the molding) I just used a wide bladed screwdriver below them along with 1 part care n 2 parts brute force n the unit popped out. It's easier to do if you remove the radio 1st so you can push the unit out rather than pull. Easy job, just remember that the hazard warning light switch is on it and the lead isnt that long! The metal bulk head to attach the GPS ariel is just behind the air ducting. Signal pick up from this point is as good as my PDA's Bluetooth unit's when placed on the dash. PS got my unit off Ebay, arrived unboxed but as new, still had its protective cover on the screen and no obvious sign of ever being installed in a vehicle so got knows where its come from! Dodgy map disc mind but then that seems par for the norm.

Most of the map discs that come with the ebay jobbies are circa 2003/2004 so common sense would dictate you get a 2006 or 2007 map disc.

Most of the ebay units have been recovered from damaged cars, write offs where the car has been punted from behind or the side. TBH it could be risky depending on what shock load the MFD2 has experienced.

Everyone who has obtained an ebay special seem pleased with theirs, I know I am!
