  1. Some great info here about the self-learning which makes coding just a 'speeds up the process' thing: ⊳ Registering the battery - How to do it properly ❘ Banner know-how (bannerbatterien.com) An 'executive summary' type quote from that page: Conclusion: Purchasing and BEM coding an original replacement battery instead of a replacement battery from the independent aftermarket –– which does not have BEM coding –– only has the short-term advantage that the complete functionality of all systems is immediately available. Please note: The battery reaches this functionality without BEM code, usually also after some time and various „trigger events“ (impulses, signals e.g. starts, cold starts, cycles). [My emphasis/greening, their original red words]

  4. I was, sadly, one of the mugs who bought an MK4 Octavia. I had an SE FE. It was the single worst experience of any car I have ever sat in, never-mind drove or owned. It was just a horrible horrible car, riddled with technical bugs. I do sometimes check in on the threads I used to contribute to on the Octavia forum and it basically looks like in the year since I got my car very little has changed. I would not recommend one bit that you take a chance on the MK4. On the other hand, while my MK4 was off the road for six weeks (before I finally rejected it) I had the use of a manual Superb. I found it very similar to the Octavia in the driving of it, i.e. the size is similar, as are many of the tech-principles, but every single thing on it worked. When my Octavia was rejected I had to look for a new car, and was able to get a great deal through a workplace scheme. This did mean my choice of Superb's was limited, as not every dealer participates in the scheme, and I wasn't able to spec a car for myself. What I ended up with was a DSG with several options added already. There was not a single manual available to me. I decided to go ahead, not having drove an automatic for about 20 years, but I can honestly say I am glad and actually am finding my driving experience has only been massively improved through going to a DSG box. I would strongly recommend you consider a DSG. You still have the option of using it as a manual, and I often do while descending steep hills, as I do tend to find the car puts itself into low gears with some enthusiasm and for me I find it revs too high during descents, especially long descents, so I usually take over manually in such circumstances. For all other use I am happy for the DSG to control the gears. As far as the tech goes, I can assure you that in five months of ownership I have not had one single problem with this car, nor did I with the loan Superb. I repeat, not one problem. Contrast that with the Octavia, where I had reported faults back to the dealership within my first month, which continue until I rejected the car five months later. Mechanically, I guess as I have only had the car five months (from brand new, 0 miles) I will leave it to someone else to comment on that long-term, but put it this way I haven't had to contact the dealer about any mechanical issues experienced so far. I genuinely can say that this is the best car I have ever owned, hands down, so I can do nothing but recommend one.
  5. Not sure how long the telephone lines can hold out!! Also so many stars visible tonight
  6. I dare say I'm not the only one to have done the winter wheel fit this weekend - I normally do it at the end of November and it seems to be good timing given the weather... Kumho tyres this time round from 'Blackcircles' after 'My Tyres' failed to deliver the Nokians I ordered - terrible service a few months ago, citing UK customs issues post-Brexit. I always knew they were Germany-based and haven't had a problem previously but now it appears to be just too difficult. And for the summer wheel cleaning, I modded one of my wheel racks (down to one car, one set of winters) into a wheel cleaning rig. A friend of mine is a professional detailer (VII Car care) and has the proper job. I'm too tight to buy one for using twice a year. Makes life much easier - apart from lifting the wheels up onto the workbench, might have to rig up a hoist next year!

So this afternoon we went for a test drive for an hour, really enjoyed it, think I drove about a mile and Lynz did about 30 on a mixture of roads. Very impressed.. so order placed. 60 Suite. Race Blue 20”Vega Wheels Drive Sport basic Climate Pack Plus Convenience Pack Plus Parking Pack Base Did think about the heat pump, but car will only do about 20 miles a day with the odd longer run, so didn’t think it nessasery. Been advised it might be 30 weeks, although, my dealer has had a few through in 12-14 weeks, so who knows. Anyway we are both happy and the wait begins, and got £800 more for our px than we paid for it over 2 years ago from the same dealer.
  8. Aye I'd have thought the same. Maybe try changing them and seeing where that takes you. Process of elimination and so forth.
  9. Yeah, possibly glow plugs.
  10. that was the issue! thanks all. I completely agree about the button icons, not at all clear.
  11. All sorted thanks to vw parts thanks for the heads up
  12. Unless your car has had some issues in the past it will probably be running the factory mix coolant. Check the tank shown in @langers2k when the engine is cold. If it's full of pink liquid you'll most likely be fine
  13. @AnnoyingPentium Gerry is correct about future issues with overuse of nasal spray. I speak from experience with Otrivine at least. I do read instructions and especially with medicines but I guess I missed the one line that said do not use for more than 7 days. After using it for 10 days (iirc) my throat started feeling unusual and this was the only unusual thing that I was using, so i re-read the instructions and then I saw the 7 day bit. I stopped using it immediately. I have had throat problems ever since. The doctor (in the days when you could get to see one) prescribed me Avamy's, for my congestion and said that Otrivine was evil stuff. I too have been to ENT without any solution and even had a Bronchoscopy as I mentioned that I had trouble swallowing food without washing it down with a drink., but when I asked them to look for anything unusual with my throat on the way down, they said that they 'don't do throats. They were not very helpful at all. (this was all waaaay pre covid)
  14. i personally really like 1.4tsi engine, but take this engine only if you dont mind having manual transmission. If you want DSG and have budget for it, take 2.0TSI (stronger version), which is amazing to drive and have reliable DSG type.
  15. I'm not quite sure how to parse that particular line, or whether your interpretation is the correct one. They also quote Škoda themselves as saying "Without configuration or by installing a replacement battery from the free aftermarket, this may cause restrictions in the functionality and increased battery wear due to incorrectly functioning shut-off stages." Again, the language isn't exactly crystal clear.
  16. An easy mistake to make when there are no cl;ear markings and there are no spare parking places around !.... She was very nice, she thought the cross hatch area was for Electric Cars.
  17. Will have another look later, just off out to gym. Looked at a quick glance to be good, plausible engineering sense to me, and Banner are a VW group OEM I think.
  18. Standard on the SEL
  19. No need, your standard shields will be fine.
  20. just an update - the loom was indeed looking very sorry for itself, just as well it was getting replaced as I don't think it would have lasted longer without causing problems. the eBay wires and solder connectors worked ok but got a bit fiddly with the smaller wires so I ended up soldering them manually and just using heat shrink tape the colours didn't really match but hey ho - needs must. all in all I think it will last for a good while. I tested and replaced all wires however the speaker issue persists. I've tested both the tweeter & door speaker they are ok, tested the loom and its also good. Still looking at it - doesn't appear to be anything getting to the loom I'm going to test the head unit then the Amp next - Blooming Pantalons
  21. What are the reasons behind you wanting a manual gearbox ? I have a manual gearbox and deeply regret not getting automatic.
  22. RIGHT - we need to tag @pab567 on this. @pablotatt - we need you to send your VIN over to pab567 to make him and others aware of this (for third party retrofitting) to make sure that this unit is not processed by him. I would also speak to Skoda Customer Services to ask them to put out an Service Bulletin to make sure that ALL skoda and VW dealers are aware. You also need to make sure that West Yorks Police flag it as stolen (not your car, but the MIB system). Did you have an Columbus or Amunsden system? I will also flag this thread - and ask the moderators to flag it STOLEN at the top of the MK3 Octavia thread and also the MIB/Skoda Infortainment sections.
  23. Hi Michael, As mentioned above there's a few of us in Sheffield on here (including the site owner ColinD). I reckon your Kodiaq is probably a bit posher than mine... ;-)
  24. Thank You so much for sharing yiour experience Gax. Sad that Skoda did this to Octavia Mk4 - such a beautiful looking car, but I'm glad you do recommend the Superb, and you've had no issues. I have now definatley ruled out the Octy Mk4. Thanks again.
  25. In 2017/2018 the 1.4tsi SEL exec had the 10" Columbus infotainment (MIB2.5) which also had a DVD player tucked away in the glovebox along with 2 SD slots, user SIM slot. You can upgrade the MAPs yourself free of charge whenever a new map is published (twice a year) easily using the SD card slot, or USB stick. You need to confirm this, but IIRC later models after the facelift with 1.5tsi engine downgraded to the smaller less feature Amundsen unit which I believe is also the newer MIB3 design. No DVD, external SD slots or user SIM. I believe you can only update maps online using Skoda Connect which is a subscription service and as it has a built in sim, data IIRC requires an expensive annual datasim contract with Skoda's partner, no choice. Could maybe update at Skoda dealer? No idea about latest Columbus (MIB3) MIB3 in other models is known to have software issues, though I dont know if this affects the units fitted to facelift Superbs. Coding Mods were also securely locked out with MIB3. I may be wrong so do some digging, hopefully someone will come along and give the full picture. My early 2018 1.4tsi SEL exec, everything works fine.
  26. I fully agree with the need to have your car battery fully charged to avoid problems. Especially since, as someone said, there are computers that can give you grief and disable electrical gizmos. My battery is an EFB type and is sealed like many(all?) batteries are now. Until recently I was only checking the condition through the spyhole at the top and checking that the right colour is there, black in my case. However I saw a post on here recently that really made good sense, switching off the start stop once the engine is running. The poster recommended doing it before decent journeys but I have taken it a stage further and switch it off before each journey, long or short. To me the rationale is indisputable; switch it off and your battery can be over 80% charged, even up to 100%. Not doing it will restrict you to a max of 80% because of the remaining 20% being needed to operate the stop start. I am not mechanically gifted at all but such a simple thing can have such beneficial effects on the battery and I recommend it to all those people like me out there who are not good at fixing cars. It takes only a fraction of a second to do and you cannot fail but improve the performance of your battery. I do realise that the stop start can be permanently disabled by removing the dongle from the battery post and I will mention having that done to my independent when it next goes in for service. I also understand that there could be adverse insurance implications if that gets done so that may not happen, depends what my mechanic says. Hope this helps with the discussion.
  27. Yeah i might be in the same boat. Alle fingers crossed to have it still this year tho!
  28. Best place to ask is in the Superb MKIII forum 😉
  29. SOUTH AFRICA: FLAME THROWING DEVICE TO COMBAT CAR JACKING (V)
  30. Hi Cornish Lad It seems to me that there are three possibilities: The car isn't charging the battery correctly You are doing only short journeys and the drain is exceeding the amount of charge being put in Your battery is on its way out, especially if it's more than 5 years old The terminal voltage of a battery gives only a crude idea of its health. As a battery ages, it's capacity diminishes and its internal resistance increases. You can end up with the electrical equivalent of a teeny motorbike size 12 volt battery sitting inside your big car battery casing. OK, it will still charge up to a normal fully-charged voltage, but give it any serious work to do and the voltage under load will melt away. This often first becomes apparent when the weather turns cold. I can't help feeling that it's new battery time. At least you have time to shop around for a good price, and changing it yourself isn't too difficult. If you look at previous threads you will see that in theory the car has to be reprogrammed after a battery change. I suspect this is a "nice to have" rather than a "must do". If it's robustly designed, the smart charging system should be able to sort itself out given a little time.
  31. Leave it on the car, connect it up as per the manual and you have more chance of things settling down.
  32. If the goal is to retrofit your rear seat to keep you son warm in his own baby/child seat. Just forget it. You'll save money. It will be quicker and much more efficient to set your ventilation system at the right demand temperature, than expecting he gets warm thanks to the rear heated seat. It's only heat transfert per conduction. There would be a lot of "barriers" indeed before your son can feel a temperature increase of even 0,5°. Heat will have to go thru your car seat housing (leather / clothe) -> Child seat frame -> Child seat housing -> Your son's own clothes for instance... To many opportunity for heat losses. IMHO, if your son were big enough not to need a child seat it could make sense. Otherwise... Just throw your money in the bin... It will have more or less the same effect...
  33. Warrior193, did you resynchronise the keyfob? It's very simple, directions in the Driver's Handbook (Owner's Manual). Personally I have little faith in digital multi-meters, especially if over 12 months old, unless they are higher priced, cheap ones generally are a waste of materials and resources there ought to be a law against such products being made. I always suggest (but didn't above?) resynchronising the remote keyfob when changing its battery - and resynchronise both remote keyfobs when changing the car battery where it instructed or not. I also recommend alternating the use of both remote keyfobs in some way that way there is even wear of the batteries, key blades and key locks (perhaps just ignition) plus it means you know where "the spare" key is and that it works.
  34. Panasonic seems to be the battery brand of choice for VW Group from factory, so I've tended to replace with same always bought online from hopefully proper sources. Duracell is my battery of choice for AA and AAA and maybe some small coil cells, but so far never for car keyfobs. Edit:- okay I messed up once for my wife's 2015 VW Polo when I got it into my head that I needed Sony batteries, that worked okay though the seller said in future there would not be any Sony coin cell batteries of this size due to Sony pulling out of that market.
  35. Just read some of the threads on here re the software issues with the Octy mk iv thatbare still being resolved or remain unresolved... Personally i wouldn't go near an Octy mk iv with a bargepole after reading some of them!
  36. Are you sure the culprit is not the alternator clutch pulley?
  37. 1 point
Says Meteor grey or as it's better known, primer. 🤣
  38. I've come across this with other manufacturers where the voltage partially dies away when the battery is removed but only enough to corrupt the uProc/memory in the key - especally if the battery is swapped too quickly. Then the new battery appears not to work. I assume you don't have the same problem I did (unlikely with both keys) so try removing the battery and holding down one of the buttons for 15 secs. This will discharge any residual voltage in the key to allow a 'cold boot' when the new battery is inserted. If the red LED in the keyfob does not flash when a button is pressed then there is definitiely a problem in the key - regardless of whether it is coded to the car or not.
  39. I think these are the ones I have: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Trunk-Boot-Lights-Lamp-For-Skoda-Octavia-Fabia-Superb-Roomster-Kodiaq-2pcs-/353759011114?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0 They are an absolutely amazing upgrade from the standard bulbs and a direct replacement
  40. Asked an AliExpress seller who sells this brand and they advised the JOGON model is not visible from inside (little square in the mirror).
  41. No, red is better. Black is beautiful for about five minutes after each cleaning. (Nice photoshop job.)
  42. sepulchrave, I appreciate what you've put (had to look up TLDR tho', and knew the news before the newsflash). AFAICS this isn't a site where fast questions and instant answer are always the norm, and I do realise some view on small screens but there's nothing wrong with different approaches and different views, opinions, methods and experience. Those that don't want my long-winded more comprehensive ways do, can and will ignore them. I'm sure we can agree to disagree with good humour, and even possibly now and again agree, no doubt see you round the block again in the future as I think like me you might have been round a good few times. Cheers. 👍
  43. We're really getting to the root of the problem with this P0130 fault code, great job team! There is another topic where you can all hang out of each other...
  44. This is not a subject of this thread. But if you google I'm pretty sure you find relevant info.
  45. If you want to go aftermarket, then I recommend Kenwood Bluetooth units. I have a single DIN KDC-BT640U, but there's double DIN versions.
  46. In order to see what you want on the screen they are correct as Smartlink that enables a wired connection from an iPhone (apple car play app) or android phone (android auto app) is not enabled on your year car and it costs £150. -200. Oh and don't skimp on a cable as there are lots of issues reported using cheap ones that don't connect properly. Hop on the MK3 Octavia forum for more info via the search facility.
  47. I have the 'OG' "OEM+" (before it was called that) originally from Shark Performance before Ben (their main developer) moved to Racingline. I have only good things to say about them, their service, and the map I received (which originally was uploaded remotely via AW Tuning in Sidcup, before I went to Racingline's HQ in Milton Keynes for some after-care to remove a stubborn error code. If you're still unsure, do feel free to call them up and ask any detailed questions about the map etc - as they're really informative!

I just tried to remove the cambelt cover to inspect mine, bit of a failure, far too many emissions pipes running over it preventing its withdrawal and TBH it feels like its catching on something, its all so tight that if it came off it wouldn't go back on so all I could see was the top (back) of the belt and the front side of the teeth, it all looked in good shape. Its done 79K miles in 5 years, I wont be looking again for another couple of years, on my MK1 Octavia Tdi I finally chnaged the belt (belt alone nothing else) at 275K miles when I could see the belt degrading, it was visible from the outside of the belt. Having inspected stripped/snapped belts in the past all those that failed on their own and not due to tensioner bearings etc would have been visibly degraded on inspection prior to the failure.
