  1. Thank you guys. I wouldn't normally spill my guts to the internet, but I had to do something in order for me to move past the initial fear and become the positive, cheeky chappie I need to be to get through this. Normally, I would bounce stuff off Zee, but with her being in work I felt it wasn't fair to drop it on her at that point. A positive mental attitude does great things. Much more than some people realise. After getting all that off my chest, I felt much better. Even more so after bumping into my consultant cardiologist on my way out for some fresh air. We had a very good and frank chat about all manor of things, which reassured me further. I also now understand that the deterioration of the Aortic Valve that was put in back in 2015 was expected due to they type they had to use for the emergency surgery I needed at that point. No time to prepare and / or set things up like they are able to this time. Shame they didn't explain that to us at the time as that would have saved a lot of worry and would have prepared us much better for the news I got yesterday. Oh well! @mac11irl Your post hit the nail on the head That's exactly what was explained by my consultant later yesterday afternoon after my above posts. And you're also bang on abut us men all too often putting on a brave face when we are feeling our worst. That is what nearly cost me my life back in 2015, which of course I learnt from and am now much more open about my thoughts and feelings. Not everyone likes that new side of me Thanks for sharing your experience @TMB and sending me some positive vibes 👍 That is also a very unpleasant and worrying thing to go through. Glad it all worked out for you
  2. No. Thats because you bought a Vauxhall, or more specifically an Insignia.

Possible VERY HEAVY oil consumption from that engine that is very expensive to put right IE new engine.
  4. So, they (RRG Rochdale) had the car all day yesterday. I dropped it off at 8:30am and picked it up at 5:10pm. This is what they told me when I picked it up (in my own words). Initially, they did a brake check and noticed that there were non skoda genuine pads on the front, and that they had been replaced recently, possibly by Cinch, possibly by previous owner / service (I don't know which thanks to the ever useful electronic service record which I cannot see ... what was wrong with the old paper book? I understand the need to make it digital but why not have both? Anyway, I digress). They also noticed a slight lip on the two front discs, again they cannot be sure where this came from, previously worn pads or the new non genuine pads causing the wear... The brakes passed all checks. but crucially they were unable to replicate the squeak in the workshop. 😞 As they were parking the car up for me to collect, they heard it squeak . They then took it back in for another look and diagnosis. Came to the conclusion that the pads, whilst safe and had loads of life in them, did not fit quite right and were potentially the cause of the noise. Long story short, they then went back and to with the warranty company for the rest of the day, photos, evidence etc and then eventually the warranty company approved them to fit new genuine skoda pads and discs to the front which they did about 4pm. On the drive home yesterday and on my drive in to work this morning, no squeaks at all. I know it can take a few days for the pads and discs to bed in so i'll keep my ears peeled for a few more days but its looking promising so far. I think, (and i'm only guessing here) that Cinch may have put the new pads on when they got the car as part of the 200 thingy check?, and they have put cheap generic pads on, that when confronted with the evidence from the mechanic that they believe the pads are causing the noise, they didn't really have any option but to allow them to replace. Total cost: £0 @hhcd80 If you are still in the 90 day window, it may be worth trying? I think because I swapped the garage from a local Halfords auto center to Skoda (just for convenience really, the skoda garage is closer to work) that may have helped me as the garage can basically say "well, its got non genuine skoda parts on it, so we think thats the cause" to the Cinch warranty team .. So if it turns out that they fitted them, then they don't really have a leg to stand on. Of course, if yours are not new-ish and have been on for a while then as you said it may just be easier to live with it for a bit and replace them at your next service... Hope you get yours sorted. Good luck. Slick2097
  5. It's only natural to be scared. There was a period a few years ago when I was waiting for MRI brain scans and there was a possibility I might have a brain tumour, so I can relate to the feeling terrified. Thankfully, it turned out that I have two relatively harmless cysts on my brain, and they also discovered that I was born with a chunk of frontal lobe missing - sounds almost comical but was quite a shock! Anyway, everything turned out OK in the end and I'm sure it will for you too. Sending positive vibes your way
  6. i gave the initial post a love it for a couple of reasons- admitting youre terrified and have had tears is healthy and yet not done by men in general even less so spoken about, the "brave face" being the norm. as such i commend that open honesty even among relative strangers. weirdly the surgical decision is great - they are pre planning your future care by avoiding a more strenuous procedure in the future when you might not be as physically able to take that strain, instead setting up a much less demanding future. also, the fact they are doing this preplaning means they clearly have great confidence in the surgery going well, you being physically able for it, and that the long term prognosis is "this lads gonna be around long enough to need a turbo upgrade in a few years so lets do the pipework now". yes it will mean more work down time, but the benefits of being then able to work more effectively and potentially for a longer time.... thats worth the few days of fear.
  7. Front alloy was getting a bit scabby on the side of the now-missing heatshield, plus it's pretty wobbly, thinking it's buckled. But £50 later... plus this let's me have an alloy spare.
  8. I give the shop staff my mobile phone as surety so I can run outside the shop. Probably why my family refuse to be associated with me when I shop for shoes
  9. That’s the option only available for full led mattix lights which can be adjusted software wise

Check to see if the car has had a new engine or record of an engine rebuild, some have had. A good model if all is well. Servicing and maintenance done as it should be. But you need to look at the possible issues with euro 5 1.8 TSI.s. sadly there can be issues. See pinned thread at top of Octavia mk3 section and search threads on here. Has the DSG been serviced each 40,000 miles. The Haldex every 3 years or 30,000 miles?
  11. Or corrosion of the lips where the pad doesn't rub on the disc.
  12. back to from whence it came and start looking for money back. the HG didnt fail on the drive home, that was sold with the fault, no way it wasnt known about...
  13. also started looking at trail running shoes last week. had narrowed it down to 2 pairs, so stopped into sports direct in cork on my lunch break today. Salomon speedcross vario 2 and asics trail scout 2 i went with - trail scouts. the salomons were lovely, snug fit, look brilliant. but.... the flap of material that the bottom lace loop is on came up over my big toe in just the wrong place and when i started walking around it was a bit sore. i dunno if anyone saw me jumping around the shop testing the heel strike cushioning.. imo a good idea they should bring into shoe shops is a treadmill so you could jump on see how they feel when moving properly. esp for sports runners..
  14. Activate parking brake before puting dsg to P. Only way to avoid this.
  15. Don't know why I said air into turbo, I meant engine of course. My brain really is getting old! I spoke to the guy a few weeks ago and he mentioned 3 different intercoolers and he recommended a certain one, but for the life of me I can't remember the makers name. At the time I really did not think too much about doing it, so names of the parts did not register in my old brain. Now my mind is considering having it done, so I was after some advice from anyone in the know so to speak. I trust the guy and his expertise, so if I do decide to go ahead, I will go with the intercooler he recommends. However, I did spend an awful lot of money on the car last year, after a leaking gearbox input shaft oil seal ruined my recently fitted Helix clutch and new DMF. So another new Helix clutch and DMF was again fitted, giving me a really big bill. Improved new intercooler, or no new intercooler, that is the question?
  16. other Rapid owners seem to have gone for 027 AGM batteries (Tayna's database has the Rapids as like the one I owned in the 80s). I have their Enduroline battery on my car and it's been fit and forget but my car doesn't have all the VW (over-complicated, I wonder why) computer programs. Enduroline 027 AGM Capacity (C20): 60 Ah - CCA (EN): 680 A - Length: 242 mm - Guarantee: 5 Years https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/027-agm/ New figures are fine but it's how long the battery can sustain keeping close to those figures and how reliably, generally the bigger the battery the more it holds.. 096 AGM - Length: 278 mm- https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/096-agm/
  17. Yes, probably. No harm in topping up the charge as well.
  18. I somehow managed to miss the updates here since last Thursday. Been some fun and games for you, Ryan ☹️ I see you now have the same rear lights as me 😁
  19. Bump for the new member from Australia.
  20. Private sale, sold as seen; I expect.
  21. No, not yet but I have at least found out at the fault code is "Hall Effect sensor". Now this is inside the strut, and I replaced the strut so I am feeling strongly it is a fault in the electrics: probably a dry joint on a circuit board. Does anyone know which boards are in the left hand rear panel? thanks Andrew
  22. seen it just now, will respond!
  23. yup... i had one, a diesel... it ate its own big end block bearings. the radiator sprung a leak. the egr may have had a problem (never got to look at it properly), the alarm developed a fault, the boost actuator solenoid stopped working intermittently, the aux belt tensioner failed, the dmf started to self destruct.... all with less than 130k miles on it.
  24. Check your engine mounts are good, the rubber can become unbonded and look ok but can cause selector problems.

Sounds about right - i've lost 1mm of tread depth in 19k km on F1 A5's.
  26. You keep the fluid level right as you bleed the brakes and then there are no issues with the ABS pump.
  27. I haven't read anything like that in Skoda workshop manuals (downloaded from cardiagn.com), when I did it by myself.
  28. Hello everyone Here from the owners FB group. Currently own a bit of an oddity. Octavia estate 1.6 tdi 4x4 non-scout in 15 plate. Picking up my son’s first car tomorrow. Fabia estate 1.6 tdi SE CR (75) on 2010 plate. Yeah perhaps not top marks for imagination but relatively cheap to insure and he climbs/camps/plays guitars - sometimes all at once! 😂 Looking forward to getting stuck in to some of the articles and contributing if I can.
  29. As above. I've no videos, but I've seen similar happen twice before.
  30. Sounds like the oil seal(s) on the turbo and the engine combusting its lubricating oil. The damage is probably restricted to a turbo replacement and clean up of the intake tract, that it started is a good sign despite the horrible noise, that will simply be combustion knock.
  31. Yes. TPMS works using the wheel speed sensors. Each wheel has a speed sensor that sends a signal back to a computer. This compares the signals from all the sensors and it looks out for quick changes between the wheels. If one/some of the wheels start travelling at a different speed compared to the other wheel/wheels it can set of the TPMS. EG:- Or:- Tyre/tyres getting hotter than the rest of the tyres. Or:- One tyre deflating because of a puncture. Thanks, AG Falco
  32. Hmm if I saw the Briskoda sticker on a Skoda I'd imagine the owner to have been an enthusiast and someone that would look after their car. The extra screenwash, oil and bits makes me think that they were "ready" more so than having issues with the car, like if you saw an BMW with spare oil in the boot. If there were other parts I'd be more concerned, that being said the boot is cavernous. I can see they've taken out the interior rear side panels and have put something else there - check if they have the original side panels. At least they have a rubber bootliner thrown in. I also expect them to have a spare wheel. I would also check if the DSG Oil service has been done at 40k in the service history.
  33. I drove on the autobahn and the autostrada in the 1970s in a signal orange 1.3L Ford Escort estate. Did I manage 90mph? The hairiest thing on the autostrada was seeing lorry drivers cooking on their camping stoves in the cab as they were driving along.
  34. Hi Fitments vary, but on my 2012 car which has no DAB or Satnav, FM reception uses both the "bee sting" roof antenna and the heated screen. The radio tuner switches quickly to whichever is giving the best reception at any time, a process called diversity. It's certainly the best FM reception of any car I have owned, so I have never felt the urge to fit DAB. For technical reasons, DAB doesn't benefit nearly so much from diversity so only uses the roof antenna, as far as I'm aware.
  35. well the last few weeks have been a bit odd. too late at to get out for q run or the weathers been ****e. then a week and a half of night shifts. but, i did get my first proper 2 plus hrs cycle last thursday completely guilt free legs were a bit jellied after that. but kharma being what it is... spud sr picked up a stomach bug that caused to destroy his bed on friday evening, so that wrote off the night... so, i got out last night at 9pm (still a bit of light) and set off up the hill on foot. twas rough given it had been a good 2 weeks since i was out last. but, i made it to the cross, then on to the top of the hill behind it - my second phase target achievement point when i started the rough cycling last summer. then descended a slightly longer way to stretch it out and my phone battery died before i was finished! luckily strava recovered most of it when i turned it back on, so it wasnt all lost. might get lucky later on and get another hoofer done. earlier though, 9pm is too feckin late to be going on an hour plus run..
  36. i dunno about a mondeo but i got bored while on the phone outsude my car today at work so tried it.. can confirm - 2013 mk2 octavia diesel - this doesnt work
  37. I find that threads are so much better when people self moderate. That way there's no need for Staff to step in to restore harmony. Just saying.........
  38. In typical VAG group fashion a couple of throttle pedals were listed. I just gave TPS my registration number. I imagine that if you did the same with your local motor factors they would be able to supply you with the correct one. Be sure that it's a quality Bosch item or similar and not some £40 piece of rubbish. Also don't make the mistake of getting a second hand one as I did because for some reason that didn't cure the problem. A brand new one did so I can only assume that the second hand one was also faulty. I was also told that the very latest brand new version is more reliable. For the sake of £70 ish it's the best option.

Had never driven a Skoda until six months ago, now own two!
  40. Just started using this forum.
  41. It was quite an effort to do it but it was worth it.
  42. ii just test the moisture level with a tester and if it says no moisture, then it does'nt need changed
  43. You guys can greenwash til you're blue in the face but there's a finite proportion of electricity that's renewable and a far higher proportion of the population claiming they use it and only it. And now I'm out.
  44. That's good to know, as it always surprises me how much gunk ends up in there. We did a trek over from Scarborough to Denby Dale yesterday. I'd filled up with V Power at home before we set off and as always on a longer run I try to take it steady as there's no point in trying to rush in holiday traffic. Anyway, here's yet another photo (taken by the Mrs) to show the trip computer as we were getting to the journey's end. The car also said we'd averaged 49mpg as we rolled into Denby Dale. Admittedly, I'm being a bit obsessive about this at times but it's good entertainment on a longer journey to see what MPG I can get. There was the occasional use of the right foot to get into traffic or to relieve the boredom otherwise I might as well have taken the diesel van but on the whole the journey was calm and efficient. I remember reading an article a few years back on hypermiling. I think it was Evo mag and they'd entered a competition with a VXR8 alongside people with a Prius and other eco cars. They fared really well in the overall rankings with somewhere in the 30s mpg as percentage wise it was a massive hike over the official Vauxhall figures. The other cars achieved amazing figures, way above the Vauxhall, but didn't rank as well as their official figures were pretty high in the first place. I guess that's why I'm on a quest to see what can be done when on a longer run. Rest assured though, my average mpg is way lower as I try to enjoy the car as much as possible. The Fuelly figures below are more of a true reflection of how I use the car.
  45. @Slick2097 - You might consider treating the front disc backplates with Copaslip. If you're unhappy working with brakes, go to a local garage, not a Skoda main stealer.
  46. For anyone interested, cylinder head was removed and pressure tested, found to be leaking through a crack between the water jacket and exhaust valve housing in cylinder 2 so not really repairable... 2nd hand head purchased pre-skimmed and valves lapped, pressure tested all good so fitted and engine rebuilt with fresh gaskets and new cambelt and waterpump kit. Up and running sweetly, no coolant loss apparent, hopefully it stays that way!

Depending on how the Fabia's MOT goes will depend on whether or not I'm making one of those...

Ah here lads, unless this is your racing rig, are you even really trying to make it feel more realistic? not mine
