  1. I sneaked it from this thread on a Russian forum. It describes several other common problems of this engine in addition to the one you have. Apparently, VAG has issued a bulletin on this, but I have never seen it.

  6. With such millage why even bother with diesel...even 1.8TSI is more dynamic. Better spend your extra money on 4x4 cheers

  7. As per the advanced driving advice: "When a pause becomes a wait, use the handbrake" Personally I hate having brake lights glaring into my eyes, it takes some time (longer as you get older) for your eyes to adjust when 3 (or 5) bright brake lights turn off - so sitting with your foot on the brake pedal temporarily blinds the driver behind when you start moving again.

  8. Had a passenger ride in this one. So fast, so noisy, so much grip. Not easy to get in and out of though. But awesome fun. Man those guys brake late!!

  15. Small update. Just got back from Camcoat in Warrington. They've done a stirling job of all the bits! I'll let the pictures do the talking... The pictures don't do the parts justice to be honest! The block looks a million times better, especially on the front face. Plus the coating will actually help to draw heat away from the block. All I need now is to buy some new thrust washers and a new sump, then I will be building the bottom end up

  16. Having just finished a repair and gone through this entire process I shall lend my enlightened opinion. 1.8tsi engine using oil. There is a set test procedure which requires the use of the ODIS diagnostic system which measures the oil consumption via a weight test. I has to be done through the ODIS method for skoda HQ to be of any assistance. This involves the removal of all the oil then the weighing and filling of the oil with a specific amount (found on ElsaPro). The vehicle must then cover around a 1000km and the oil be re-weighed. Once this has been carried out the repairs can move forward depending on the results. There is a TPI which in some cases requires the replacement of the timing chain and tensioner but on the same bulletin it states that the pistons with rings and rods must be replaced too. The parts will have no doubt become the subject of redesign using different materials to conquer the issue. In order to carry out this task the engine needs removing to strip it. The head will need removing and at that point the bores should be inspected by an independent engineering company who should then provide you with the measurements of the bores and a break down of their condition. They will probably find that they are scored and need liners fitting OR the block is found to be scrap. At which point the most sensible option is a full new engine.

  17. The TSI VRS is not as thirsty as you would expect... I did a long road trip with the courtesy 1.2TSI and averaged 5.7l to 100km. The VRS TSI can do around 6.0l under similar conditions, so hardly would say it is consuming a lot. My previous car was a Saab 2.8V6 turbo and I was lucky to see it under 8.0l under any conditions. A friend of mine has the TDI VRS and we drove his and mine back to back. The TSI clearly has more low end torque and more pull, but the TDI is ok also. Between both, I would choose the TSI, unless you want a 4x4 VRS, which is only available for the TDI engine.

  18. RIP to a true legend of human exploration - to me, these early pioneers should have the option of having their remains fired off into space on the next long range mission, such as the next rover to mars. Be fitting that the early pioneers of space flight end up being the pioneers of deep space exploration (in a way of course) - maybe something like the probes to Pluto and beyond.

  21. I personally would prefer the guy behind me had brake-lights glaring in their face..... People stopped at traffic lights these days are so preoccupied and distracted by other things, such as their mobile phones, etc, etc - I'd prefer they saw the car in front was still stopped - rather than looking up, seeing no brake-lights and immediately trying to drive forward, because subconciously they think the traffic is flowing again. Just my 2c

  24. How slow is slow.... as they system should Auto Brake if the vehicle is between 3 & 20MPH.With systems like this i think its important to 1. Be informed, either read the cars Manual or speak to a dealer... but be fully aware of how the system operates and what potenionally could a happen in what situations...this will obviously help if the system is trigger 2. To certain extent forget its there.... it should be relied upon... im not saying those above do.... but i bet you there a number who will think it can depended on. that said i think its a very handy tool espically in motorway traffic! Its all too easy to get sucked in to follow vehicles a little closer than you should (well in my Case) and the display is handy reminder of what gap should be kept.

  27. That would look great if you reversed the image positions and put a sort of thought bubble around the performance model. It might look a bit like the standard car was dreaming of being a racer

  28. Still learning my camera and wanted to start doing some astrophotography so when I was back home I went down Oxwich with my old man, a beach on Gower. He has his bino's and it's amazing how much you see with just them. Wasn't concerned at this point of making an interesting photo, more working out how my intervalometer worked, what ISO I needed and how long to keep the shutter open. You can just make out the Milky Way These ones are down Usk Reservoir but I was still early, Sun hadn't long gone down, hence it seeming more blue. Need to go back up there once weather improves

  29. Thanks Trev she's coming along nicely. New FMIC as well which'll help the temps and oil pressure gauge plumbed in now too. Oil temp not really an issue with the oil cooler installed which it was at Castle Coombe a year or so back.

  30. Yeah I've seen that extract a couple of times :s Theres 2 different tests; 1 over 300km and another over 1000km. As you can imagine the test over 1000km is far more precise.

  32. It's massively better than what some other manufacturers do. Fords, Peugeots, and Citroens seem to be the worst offenders. Bright white LEDs on the front, dash cluster lit up like you've got the headlamps on, and nothing on the back. Even in the dead of night. Which means that people don't turn their lights on, because that visual clue of having a pitch black dashboard is missing. IMO having the dash cluster lit without lights is really quite dangerous, unless there is the sensor that VW group cars have. Of course you could say that you shouldn't need constant lighting of the dash cluster, but apparently it's fashionable to have the instruments at the bottom of plastic tunnels!

  33. Yes but even if the autotrader prices are double the price they use it's still less than 50%. My insurance matched autotrader when I threatened to go to the ombudsman as they state you need to find a replacement local to you with similar mileage. Not all are that lucky though. I'm sure once we get our eyes on the engineers report all will be clear.

  36. Check the carpets and spare tyre well in the boot for water. Slow demisting usually indicates something is wet inside the car. Hopefully it's just because the car was standing around with humid autumn air in it, which condensed into the car when it got cold a few weeks ago it and is drying out as you use it, but there may be a leak somewhere. The passenger footwell, panoramic roof drains and spare tyre well are the common places for leaks (for the small number of people that have issues). EU law says every car sold there has to have a km/h speed readout, but if plug into the OBD port with VCDS and tell it it's now an Australian car you can get mph instead. A ratcheting noise while turning is usually CV joints. The power steering is electric, so the only noise I've noticed from it is a high pitched electrical whine when it's working hard and I have the window open. If it's happening when you turn the wheel but are not rolling then it's a lot less likely to be CV joints. Those tyre pressures seem a little off what my car recommends, on mine the recommended pressure pretty much equal all around unless the car is loaded where the rear wheels get more than the front - have a look on the table printed inside the fuel filler flap for the recommended pressures. Tyre pressure monitoring uses the ABS sensors to detect slight variations in average speed between tyres. if one is going flat it will spin slightly faster than the other correctly inflated tyres. It won't detect sudden punctures, but has saved me from replacing 2 tyres so far by spotting slow punctures. I can't help on bluetooth, mine just worked when I connected but it never gave any RSAP options as I don't think my phone supports it at all. I'm not sure my car supports the useful RSAP features like displaying text messages on the Columbus screen anyway.

  37. Also make sure you dont pay over the odds for one. They are heavily discounted new, so used prices should reflect this. Also do you need diesel, they are only suitable for longer daily journeys or the DPF filter can block. 15k miles or more a year is roughly the break even for a diesel. If not get one of the excellent petrol turbos, 1.2 1.4 or 2.0 vrs. The May 2015 onwards infotainment (MIB 2)with the bigger screen is much better and quicker to respond.

  38. I agree with you, MT. But rest assured, the procedure does become second nature after a few weeks... ...as does the requirement to pull the gearlever backwards to go forwards... ...and (when in manual mode) the requirement to push the gearlever forwards to select a higher gear. I'm sure there must be logic somewhere, but perhaps I'm being dumb as well!

  39. Not really as the Volkswagen Group will dictate what Skoda CZ can produce or not that are competition to the VW, Audi & SEAT models. Now there is a 7 seater SUV from Skoda that can be offered Globally including into North America & Canada where the VW / Audi name is now muck. Many many people tow nothing more than light trailers, and many in the UK / EU have licences that mean they are unlikely to be towing much weight. Younger generations might just buy a vehicle they want or think will suit their life style and situation. If they want a VW, Audi or Seat then there are those on offer, it's all about choices, and then advertising and markets.

  40. I have an 11 mile cycle path near me called the Cuckoo Trail. It's great when it's dark as it's mostly unlit and there'll be virtually no one on it. I use a 500 lumen head torch on that for distance due to a near miss with a cow (the bovine style that produces milk) who was stood in the middle of the cycle path in the dark with no lights on! Wouldn't use a head torch on the road as it's too easy to look around (like at junctions) and blind people if you're not careful. Gaz

  41. My understanding is that it is not a recall, it's a service action. There are no safety issues involved, which is what would make it a recall. So that was a dubious piece of advice to start with. It's perfectly possible to decline to have the fix applied: a number of forum members have done so.

  42. If everything was as simple, or everything in life as reliable as a Golf, or putting new rings & scrapers into VW Group engines that use Excessive amounts of oil it would be a wonderful world. VW could far sooner have stopped putting in Rings made of chocolate, and the issue would not have grown as it has.

  47. I've got a 1.2TSi 110 DSG. The petrol engine never stalls. With the DSG, you have no control of the clutch. If the engine stalls, there is something wrong with the car. You can not do anything about it, there is something wrong with the car. It is a serious problem that will lead to an accident that the driver can not avoid.
