  1. Usually means a gearbox service is due.
  2. Guys, the car's fixed, the OP is happy, it wasn't the crank sensor, all's well that ends well.
  3. So it's this then: https://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/vw-engine-oil/castrol-edge-professional-longlife-iii-5w30-engine-oil-5l/ Which is absolutely fine. Nothing to see here...
  4. It should state what oil was used on the invoice, please check this. I'd be amazed if they used the wrong stuff because the computerised BOM would have automatically generated the correct parts and fluids list from the VIN and reg. number. So I don't believe such an egregious error can have been made.
  5. You can't, it's filled when the supercharger is assembled and doesn't require replacement unless you're stripping and rebuilding it. It's completely sealed in there so it can't be contaminated, therefore it doesn't need changing.
  6. No, it will settle in after a few weeks use.
  7. Being elderly is fortunate, I nearly didn't make it out of my youth, young men and motorcycles don't play well together!
  8. No, what you know is that the fan motor runs at FULL speed, I suspect it doesn't run at the lower speed. Please test it by shorting the terminals you've been shown.
  9. Try shorting out the thermoswitch, it should come on immediately.
  10. I don't blame you for getting the garage to do it, you really do need a proper car lift and good lighting to tackle the crank sensor, even then it basically has to be done blind.
  11. Actuators are available separately these days so replacing the entire turbo is not necessary.
  12. In that case the turbo will last however long you decide to keep the car.
  13. Turbo failures are only common on cars that get neglected for oil changes, usually because they do a low mileage round town which are the worst conditions for oil to be left unchanged!
  14. Let's wait for the codes, there's enough rampant guessing and speculation cluttering other threads without subjecting this one to a similar 'dirty' protest!
  15. Estates always look ungainly until they're lowered and have 16" wheels fitted.
  16. The compressor is permanently engaged and spins all the time so your mechanic might be a bit mental. If it's blowing hot air it sounds like the temperature flap is stuck, try cycling from full hot to full cold whilst running the fan full blast, you should be able to tell if the flaps moving or not.
  17. Yes there are no issues with brand really, it's more magical thinking than anything else, I would always use Iridium and keep an eye on the coil packs, at the first sign of a misfire you should just change the offending coil pack right away.
  18. 2Nm extra is irrelevant, most cheap torque wrenches aren't even that accurate so forget about it. Also the gap is fine, well within tolerance of +/- 0.1mm. Try and ignore all the pomposity and self-importance on here to cut through to what's actually important; which is regular plug checks and changing at the first signs of wear.
  19. No, the disc fits onto the hub using dimension G, not dimension H.
  20. Tons of VAG group cars with 288 and 312 mm front discs, the scrapyards are full of them, they are handed tho' and if you've stripped one of the caliper carrier threads it's easier and cheaper to simply helicoil it, you don't even have to take it off the car.
  21. Most of them are still in service so it's more down to scarcity I reckon. £210 including shipping seems reasonable, I'm assuming delivery to your house is possible with a wagon, you should be able to take it off the pallet kerbside and chuck it in a wheelbarrow.

  23. Ok, I read your post to mean you didn't know which light it was, if you do know then just look at the bulb that's in it at the moment.
  24. I bought a Chinese no-name starter for £55 delivered and it works beautifully, a Bosch one was £200 from GSF!
