Thanks from me too @ahenners, just installed after following  your "shopping list" , what a difference ! Makes the car feel better quality!

Great stuff! I think I should be earning some commission from the retailer if everyone is buying from the place I suggested! 😆

I’d like to thank the contributors to this thread, as a newbie to the site, I’ve found all the info necessary to order up the parts, which I’ve just done, and can’t wait to fit to my vRS!

Thanks @ahenners for the parts guide.

Just fitted to my mk3 fl with ease.

Took 10mins max.

👍👍👍👍

Oooo, this looks very interesting!

I'll be installing this upgrade, as others have said, should have been standard

Have you done the, open and close bonnet ten times yet ? 😆

Just ordered the bits, looks like will be a next weekend job. 😀

Thanks everyone. I bought the parts as suggested earlier in the thread and fitted today, all works perfectly 👌

No idea why the car didn't come as standard this way.

I colour coded my bolts with some touch up paint. Finishes it nicely.

All fitted, quick and easy as everyone's said.

Nice mod!

Anyone know how to remove the little yellow clip that holds the bonnet arm in place given that it's now surplus to requirements?

From the top, there's a circular pin in the middle, push this down with a suitable tool, then pull the whole clip up.

Back from my holidays and now fitted the new bonnet dampers on . I made a small cut in the foam so that the dampers sit without any pressure on them when the bonnet is closed. Very pleased with the result. Thanks again for all the info. Really pleased with the result.FCA31816-04DD-4E10-9515-89B85B23329E.thumb.jpeg.760787a2a001f28ac35bcbaabe675bf3.jpeg126962F7-C34B-467A-803A-921832E1FADC.thumb.jpeg.efddf6902a58930fc8db315ed46fc370.jpeg

Without the cut how much does it run against? I hadn't even thought of that ay but might follow suit.

The sponge, which is quite dense, does compress when the damper sits on top of it. My fear was that overtime it might distort the damper. Lowering the bonnet to offer up the damper to the sponge meant it was easy to see just how much I needed to remove. Two secs with a sharp knife, job done. The area I removed is clearly visible on the photo.

I have yet to see a pipe bender made from sponge :)

I did however make the same cut on mine but for my own reason, the sponge profile is to seal against, or at the very least minimise, water infiltration, if its compressed against the gas strut body there will be gaps at each side so I made a similar cut to fit as close as possible to the casing.

The Febi struts are perfect in strength, they can lift the bonnet unsupported after initially lifting it. They slow before they come to a stop at maximum extension too.

2x Febi Bilstein 27709 struts. About £14 each from an eBay motorparts seller.

2x M8 ball joints with a 10mm ball head and 25mm thread length: https://www.sgs-engineering.com/x4-ball-extension

2x M6 ball joints with a 10mm ball head and 12mm thread length: https://www.sgs-engineering.com/x2-ball-extension

Above ball joints came to a tenner with delivery.

2x M8 and 2x M6 washers. Bought from an eBay seller for a couple of quid.

You also need an M10 spline bit to undo the bolt on the bonnet which I didn't already have.

Painted the washers and ball joint bolts with a touch up kit I already had to make them blend in and look more OEM.

Total cost probably about £42 but happy with the result.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I've just ordered this kit list and I wanted to shout out to @ahenners as a thank you! Fingers crossed I am up to the install! If anyone looks to order the struts for themselves, I ended up ordering a pair from Amazon as other places were out of stock.

I hope they're the right ones though as they state 'tail gate'! I'm sure they are as they're the same model referenced above (fingers crossed)!

Downside is you'll confuse the hell out of the techs when your car goes into a dealer for servicing!😂

Just teaching them the right way! Lol

Job done. Although toying with the idea of cutting a notch in the foam like others have done. Is this a strong recommendation now?

I have scored it for what it is worth, but thought I'd check it out with you all folks before I start hacking!

It's a shame I don't have any touch up paint for the pin bolts, I missed a trick there. I think I'll do them in the summer as I have left the main arm on for now. Did you spray or paint brush them?

Hi ScottyNS, eBay touch in stick did the business for me. Such a small area that it doesn’t show up any brush strokes. A Stanley blade, or even a ‘borrowed’ kitchen knife will take care of the foam.

Cheers @Dogexplo, that sounds like a plan! One to take my time over so I don't make a hash of it!

I never bothered with touching the foam, indents fine by itself. Still going strong on mine after all this time. Thanks for the shout out, glad it helped 😀
