VW UK Action plan for EA 189 EU5 engines

Featured Replies

Whatever they offer I expect it will require a signature from owners agreeing that it is a 'full and final settlement' which would preclude participation in any other legal action eg class action suits for loss of value. It may be a matter of owners choosing which way to go. On a slightly related topic one of my friends is giving up on Shoda "in disgust because of the cheating" and is selling her Octavia 1,6 TDi to  her son at a knockdown price. She is buying a new Dacia! I suggested hanging on to see if there is any compo but it fell on deaf ears!

I went from BMW to VW to Skoda, but a Dacia would definitely be a step to far! Now thinking/dreaming about an Octavis VRS 230. Should get a decent discount and trade in possibly. Who knows!

Got a letter from Skoda today, can't seem to upload the photo I took of the letter. The image icon on the toolbar doesn't work?

I got mine too. Just explanation what they are going to do to improve nox emissions.

I have only just bought my Octavia and I'm not very happy about just receiving a letter from Skoda regarding a recall for my car!

While I was in the showroom I asked about this recall and nothing was said!

Where do I stand in terms of the purchase of my vehicle and a possible change in tax cost?

Also what are the compensation possibilities with this?

Sorry, but I am sure no one knows the answer to any of those questions.

See what transpires in the New Year when the recalls start to happen. It's going to be very interesting!

Thanks Pip, I will be sure to follow this closely and I'm going to hold off on modifications until I know what's happening!

Problem is I've got my next service coming up in about February which is when the remaps

for the 2.0 tdi engines will be in full swing according to my latest letter from Skoda. Hopefully

by then some others will have reported back what their experiences have been.

Hi Guys, reading all of this helps.  So if the software, either way round it is simply a "cheat", then why didn't VW et al simply do this as a standard service software blow and stop all this fuss?

No I suspect (wait and see!!) that there is more to this.

How can a simple software update on 2l CR fix this issue?

Where is the Adblue solution in all of this.  Other makers Ford and BMW plus Mercedes all use an AdBlue I think.  So if they do why not VW et al?????

I still think(?) that my power or CO2 will be effected if it that easy(?)

Agreed.

What was the point to cheat if solution is so easy. There must be some catch. I believe that software change is going to effect engines somehow and they knew about it.

There is the possibility that the ECU software update will simply remove the cheat mode. So if it were to be tested in line with Euro V testing procedure, it would emit the 'real world' level of Co2 and NoX.

It's down to individual owners, for whether they want to put this to the test or not, when the 'fix' is made available to the dealership network.

Well. The cheat mode is activated by plugging obd while testing emissions. So I believe they already know real levels of nox and co2 by testing without plugging obd.

They have to change it other wise road tax will go up...

Hi thomasbham, yes seems to be something else?  If the s/w fix removes the cheat and then the engine operates at a higher CO2 what will happen re a private person on car tax?  I know company cars will not be effected, but no mention (or have I missed it) re private car's, let alone what happens to NOX?

The vehicles tax band will not be changed but VW will be fined taking into account tax liabilities lost by HM customs

Hi seboni121, thanks for this - just retaxed my car from 1/1/16!  Will now wait and see what the effect will be.  A friend has 2 affected cars and he is very sceptical about all of this - I said wait and see.

Tonight's news is that VW is being sued by the US Justice Department. Going to get very

very expensive for VW me thinks!

Litigation in America.... who'd have thought it!

VW have just changed tact for their vans offerings in the UK and now offer the TSI versions they did not previously ie only TDIs offered to buyers.

VW should offer TSI cars for all TDI cars and introduce, or even create, TSI models, (or TDIs with SCR fitted), to replace any diesels supplied over the last few years that cannot meet the NOX and PMs to drastically reduce vehicle emissions in these areas or, as Zac Goldsmith will do in London, he will ban such vehicles from London he plans with his ULEZ and other cities likely to follow.

Blimey, now it is 61 billion!   :-

61 Billion in the US and a 50p bit of metal gauze in the UK. Worlds apart eh?

So I see that in Auto Express they report:

"However, it has now been confirmed that UK owners will not be compensated. A spokesman told Auto Express: “There won’t be compensation. All the indications are that residual values are unaffected.” And he claimed that the confusion had been caused by “a slight mistranslation”."

"Speaking before the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, Paul Willis, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group UK, said: “To pay compensation there has to be a loss, and at this stage I see no reason for there to be a loss. Our engineers tell us there will be no difference in fuel consumption or driveability."

So what is happening with the car then? No loss in BHP, Torque, MPG or CO2 then?  Pull the other one then!!!!!!

And ALL that at the same time as substantially reducing the on test omissions, pretty good!. I don't believe it for one moment. We have seen what the Americans are proposing to sue V A G for ( up to $61 BILLION ) and that on the few cars  sold or proposed there, so with the 11 million sold in Europe we can see why VAG are hoping not to have to pay but that is not up to them. Hopefully the lawyers, some of us have already " enrolled " with do not throw the towel in and fight for various aspects of compensation.
