Could we speculate that VW might extend factory warranty to 5 years?

You mean like battery recycling and power generation emissions, I guess?

Yep - electric is fine in principal provided things like the above are also taken into consideration in whole life impacts etc.

Apparently battery recycling is very successful and the way solar and home battery storage are going, it looks almost inevitable as a sustainable transport solution.

All except Toyota now seem to think so.

If cars have been mapped would that have got rid of the cheat software??

Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk

Mappers purely tweak what is already there, so I'd be amazed if there are any tuners who don't have the cheat in their software.

So if once VAG have done their update you get your map reapplied, you'll have put the cheat back on.

I'm guessing VAG will be checking for mapped cars as they come in

Volkswagen says it is looking into more of its diesel engines to see whether they also contain software used to manipulate emissions test data.

Should the engines contain a so-called "defeat device", this could substantially widen the number of vehicles affected.

VW has been embroiled in a scandal over emissions test rigging on its EA 189 engines.

It said it was now looking into older versions of EA 288 engines.

In September, Volkswagen said that 11 million diesel vehicles were affected by the scandal, first uncovered by the US regulator, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA discovered that certain engines were fitted with a cheat-device that could detect when the car was being tested and reduced emissions to improve results.

VW had previously said that the software was installed on cars with variants of the EA 189 diesel engine built to the "Euro 5" emissions standard.

The company is now checking whether models with the EA 288 diesel motor built to the same emissions standard may also have the software.

Newer EA 288 cars built to the "Euro 6" standard are said not to be affected.

They have been naughty,

but also the with the Marine Engine Division, so the VWG's court cases look like they are going to be getting very very costly.

Not so sure how well the 'Building back up trust' is going, other than with Germans.

I wonder who is behind the 'polls' done in Germany.

the 1.6 engines WILL need more than software changes. See above article.

My 2 ltr Superb went in for M O T this morning to a garage I have known for many years, well respected locally in Southampton and who repair all vehicles ( except French which they steer clear of ) including Rolls/Bentley. They are very competent and when I went to collect my M O T passed vehicle I told the proprietor it has the bad software and asked him his opinion of VW engines , including the 1.4 petrol, and he said VW engines very good, the 1.4 petrol had problem in it's early days but OK now. He gave me back a certain faith in V A G engineering, shame about the proneness to deceit.

Did he say anything about the 1.2 also and the 7 Spd DSG ?.

You can all relax if your worried about reduced power or less MPG or having your mapped car flashed with a new map

UK recall 'won't be mandatory'

The UK's Department for Transport has confirmed that it won't be issuing a mandatory recall for cars affected by Volkswagen's emissions scandal in this country.

I'd be surprised if a law suite didn't break out initiated by any number of parties, not just political.

Is the UK EPA politically independent?

If so, might IT not be sued for failing to protect those in major cities from the consequences of continued, high level, NOx emissions, or do conservatives have the power to play god on fundamental health issues?

Is the Health Minister on board with the "Department of Transport's" 'convenient' solution to VW's problems?.

Does the NHS agree let alone all the peak bodies representing the medical profession?

Don't shoot the messenger.......I'm just putting forward a fairly logical response that might result from one Department's simple solution.

I'd be amazed if the Germans followed this path, whether you like it or not, 'greens' seem to be on the rise everywhere, supported by a raft of other pressure groups.

Living in the country I'm not worried about the effect my vehicle has, but thousands in the cities are another matter I'm thinking.

It won't resolve second hand market values however, as the report concedes.

A VAG trade up is a tempting proposition as a form of compensation.

More waiting it seems to me.

Quoted from the above autocar article

"While details on the technical fix Volkswagen will use to correct the affected cars remain limited, Willis said that customers should notice no difference in fuel economy once the fix has been applied"

This seems to have been VW's response all along but what about power? There has never been any mention anywhere as far as I have seen about whether there will be any changes to the power of the engines. Are they keeping quiet about that because there could be an adverse effect?

It's called Public Relations

Ie

Only talk about what YOU want to talk about......eg lower emissions AND same economy .....aren't we just so happy.

Today's Green Car Reports

Neither the U.S. EPA

NOR

The automaker has the power to enforce owners to comply with a recall request.

That was my point they are pulling the PR card on what WE want to hear but are they being quiet about things we may not want to hear due to there being an adverse effect?

You're right - it's what they DON'T say.

Got the confirming email a few mins age with a link to 'dieselinfo'

VW refers to voluntary recall

Voluntary for all concerned?

Volkswagen Group spin.

'2 Rogue Software Engineers'.

'More than 2 but much fewer than ten involved'.

10 Seniors Suspended.

An Engine Development team might have been involved.

100's in a Engine development team might have known.

1000's in Factories might have known.

Martin Winterkorn the VW CEO never knew.

The new VWG CEO that was the CEO of Porsche never knew.

The Board members of the Volkswagen Group never knew.

So the 3 Monkeys is alive and well at VWG.

& whoever advised them not to come clean right from the start maybe needs sacked.

"We know nothing, we see nothing, we hear nothing,

we are going to be the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world."

Maybe just not the wealthiest or most profitable.

We all knowthe recall prob wouldnt be mandatory in the uk. But as ive mentioned before. What could be the repocussions in the long term and short term if owners didnt go ahead with it

The trade will know it hasn't been completed in any case, and will probably have it done.

The only ones who'll fight over your car will be enthusiasts I'm thinking

in 2017/18 some crappy 7 or 8 year old or older Euro 5 / 5.5 VW Engine Diesel car that was already out of manufacturers warranty in 2015 will sell to someone much as usual.

Or the Diesel scrappage scheme will be in full flow and you can get shot of them that way.

Lots of H20 to flow under the bridge before then,

or just to leak in VW door seals, corrosion, wet carpets etc.

The latest from VW....

Thorough appraisal of the Diesel emissions issue

Wolfsburg, October 23, 2015. Volkswagen confirms today that no software constituting an improper defeat device as defined in law is installed in vehicles with EA288 EU5 as well as EU6-engines in the European Union. Consequently, new vehicles of the Volkswagen Group offered within the European Union with those engines comply with legal requirements and environmental standards.

Volkswagen AG is systematically reviewing this issue worldwide. The group strives for a holistic solution for complying with the respective valid standards.

After thorough examination it is now confirmed that no software constituting an improper defeat device as defined in law is installed in vehicles with EA 288 EU5-engines. Before, Volkswagen Group has confirmed that new EU6-compliant vehicles offered within the European Union fulfil all legal requirements and environmental standards.

Volkswagen customers can visit the corporate websites such as www.volkswagen.de/info, which was set up on October 2, 2015 and enter the chassis number of their vehicle to find out straight away whether their vehicles are affected. Similar customer websites are active in the other EU countries and for the Audi, SEAT and Škoda brands.

Work on the technical solutions detailed in the plan of measures is currently proceeding at full speed. Remedial action on the vehicles will begin in January 2016 – at no cost to customers. The measures are currently being developed for each affected series and each affected model year and will first be presented to the responsible authorities.

Volkswagen will subsequently inform the owners of these vehicles over the next weeks and months.

When they do press releases and announcements from 'The Volkswagen Group'.  and using the Engine Codes,

it keeps being 'VW'.

they really should say.

The Volkswagen Auto Group confirms 'Customer of VW, Audi, Seat & Skoda with engine......  in the European Union etc.

They , the Volkswagen Group really keep trying to have 'AUDI' not appear in headlines,

and that means that Skoda & Seat also pretty much looks like they are brands, and brands involved,

but not really that important,

VW Spin even in releases.

Oh No, another dig at VW in general!
