I thought one would have to use the cable? What hardware can you use to make it wireless?

im running wireless android auto on the amundsen rework but im using a master/slave setup with one 'old' phone permanently connected to the car and it acts as a slave.

https://www.xda-developers.com/wireless-android-auto-head-unit-hack/

this worked for me using an old rooted Galaxy 5S as a slave

Any CarPlay version is wireless but it does need appropriate hardware, which none of the OEM Octy headunits have.

Only a few OEM and aftermarket head units support wireless CarPlay, the majority need a cable connection.

The OEM head units in the Octavia are definitely cable CarPlay only.

Yes it’s still wired in the Skoda. BMW offer wireless CarPlay but it still a plug in job in the Skoda. I have plugged phones into cars for years so it’s a non issue for me. I don’t always use CarPlay because the Columbus is so good so the phone is often sat charging on the Qi pad.

Yup. Like I said, it's less about the CarPlay version and all about the head unit.

As I understand it, the head unit and phone do an initial handshake over bluetooth and then hand over the CarPlay connection to Wifi. It's a shame the Amundsen doesn't support it as does have a wifi chipset.

yes the wifi is excellent works well when you have two kids and their own spotify.:)

Except on the Skoda head units they don't hand over to WiFi - which is why you need to use a cable.

That’s the annoying issue. My Columbus radio has 4G WiFi, and theoretically has some/all (Not really 100% sure how BMW and the like manage the wireless CarPlay) of the hardware but I don’t really mind plugging the phone in.

SashaGrace would you say this is a good price for the SKODA Octavia 3 Facelift MIB2 Display Screen Navigation 5E0919605 M - £325

That big screen looks epic with CarPlay. Hate touch buttons in a car though - stupid idea. Much prefer the pre-fl units with physical, tactile buttons.

I assume the maxidot display doesn't show anything useful when CarPlay / Android Auto is plugged in?

  • Author

Yes it still says Apple CarPlay and nothing else, which is annoying. They have also released album art over BT on iOS 13 apparently so that’s another one to test today :)

Ooohhh!!! I'l have to try that tomorrow.

It wasn’t working for me this evening. iOS 13 now supports AVRCP 1.6 for album art streaming over BT. I would think the radio is compatible as Android users have reported that their devices can do it.

I’ve got the FL Amundsen with proper knobs but touch buttons for input selection. I’m not changing inputs much and the volume knob mainly exists to annoy me when it’s not pointing directly upwards, I tend to use the steering wheel for volume more. I do use the the other knob occasionally on the CarPlay home screen but other than that I don’t miss physical controls at all.

I did think originally they’d annoy me.

I’m aware of that also, but thanks!

I’m assuming they also don’t do the initial CarPlay handshake over Bluetooth either. They basically don’t support wireless CarPlay at all, as I said in my first post.

I think its Harman that make at least some of these, including some of the units for BMW so maybe in the fact Mark IV?

Forgive me for putting words in your mouth, but to me what you're saying is you don't mind the touch controls because you don't use them. That's hardly a ringing endorsement. You make it work (and yeah, it's not much of a burden when you have the wheel controls instead) but I'd still call the manufacturers idiots for doing it.

I really don't think touch buttons belong in a car.  The worst offender is Citroen where the HVAC controls have to be operated via a touch screen.  Yeah, so when my windscreen steams up in the winter I'm going to take my eyes off the road, try and change the screen from radio to heating controls (while the car is bumping up and down) and then go through multiple steps to turn the blowers.  Versus pretty much every car made for the last 40+ years where it's twisting a physical rotary dial which doesn't need my eyes taking off the road at any point.

Sorry I'm not ranting at you, it's the car makers and their mis-placed desire to fit ever glossier bigger screens.

Totally know what you mean about the volume knob lining up though... I get so anxious if it's a degree off

No problem, you’ve summarised it well. You are right that it mainly doesn’t bother me as I’m not changing inputs so often, if I was the pre fl was absolutely better.

I guess it’s a balancing act, at one end of the spectrum you have a 90s Lexus with a thousand different buttons sticking out of the dash, at the other end you have a Tesla model 3 with about as much as they can legally get away with on a screen. On the whole I think VAG tend to strike a good balance, the touch buttons on the screen are definitely at or slightly over the tipping point.

The Citroen climate controls sound like they would annoy me no end, I think I saw a Mercedes reviewed that had a second screen for climate which struck me as dumb. I like that VAG have so far stuck with physical knobs and buttons there. I know some people that are happy just setting and forgetting the climate, but not me.

I exported all my music to an SD Card and went through sorting out the names and running order etc. Painful, but great when it's all set.

I thought that all the cover art would carry but there's about 30% without. It's driving me crazy and will ha e to manually sort it in the coming days.

Yeah the whole Citroen thing with the HVAC doesn’t bother me, I leave the climate control in AUTO and set to 17.5 and I rarely ever move it, I never used the soft keys on my old radio even though they were nice to use, I don’t miss them and I hated the volume knob. On the whole I don’t mind touch screens but on luxury cars I like a well dampened premium switch but some are going the whole hog with screens. As my next car will likely be a way off as I’m very happy with the Octy I’m not fussed about what will come next. I would like a Tesla as my fuel cost is heavy but I hope that a European manufacturer can keep up with Tesla and bring an electric car to market that can compete on a hardware and software level and isn’t as badly made as a Tesla or overseen by that God awful Elon Musk.

All my SD and HDD music has cover art, I manually added it all. Sad but satisfying :)

With the Alpine head unit in my other car I found that I had to add the cover art to every track, having it in the folder wasn't sufficient - not sure if the same applies to the Skoda units as I just use the same files.

When I first read about Android Auto a few years back it was described as full voice control for the car systems.  As modern cars are all canbus controlled the theory is there and you should be able to say 'ok google demist the windscreen' and it sorts you out.  Still waiting for this to happen.

Do you get tax benefits when buying electric cars in UK?

Used to be a 5k grant towards the cost, but has dropped to 3.5k for an all electric car. Hybrids no longer qualify.

There are also grants for bikes and vans

As above, it’s getting less and less. The Tesla’s currently available are all over £40k list now so they attract the £310 per year road tax for the first 5 years. I would be looking at either a used Model S about the same age or a bit newer than my Octy or a new base Model 3 if the price comes down. It’ll be a couple of years yet and I’m able to get a business lease as a VAT registered company director so that helps. Had a good deal in my inbox for an M3 not long ago but heavy deposit.

Would you be able to lease a car, knowing you couldn't mod it?

I understand, here in Norway there are no VAT or taxes on electric cars, but Teslas are still pretty expensive. I myself would love an Audi E-tron but not to the price of £80k.
