Wow, not too complicated then........

From a 280 Superb, to an R estate, that's unusual. A tad quicker of course, but noticeably smaller than the Skoda, at least from the B pillar back.

Nice car though, I'd have one for myself, but since SWMBO is keeping hers & I'm allowed to drive it (getting it serviced, refuelling, shopping....) I need to find a suitable alternative.

A Leon Cupra ST might be an obvious choice but it's bit cramped inside, used Cupra Ateca are too expensive, + they often lack the desirable comfort & sound pack.

I can't find a Superb 272 / 280 with my desired options that cost less than £40K new, same with the Passat 272 R-line Edition, not so well equipped as the equivalent Superb but quite cheap, £30-£32K for low-milage pre-registered cars on "K" plates.

Unless you’re set on a dragon green (lovely colour) Sportline, My 19 reg L&K was just under 40K new. I don’t think it’s missing any useful options.

I'd be happy with an L&K, but the paddles are an option & very, very scarce on a used car. (So far we've owned 5 dsg cars, all with paddles & we would really miss them............)

I used the paddles very rarely  on my nimble GTI. I don’t know why I would want to use them on the Superb, which has the usual DSG manual shift lever. I just pull it backwards into sport mode if I want to leave a junction quickly with oncoming traffic or overtake.

@Redboy I'm the same with the paddles in 7 months and over 6,000 miles I haven't ever needed to use the paddles to change gear and I've probably used Sport mode twice because even in Eco it's very fast since the remap in early Feb 2020. I'm also a sucker for the coasting function in Eco and like lifting off as I approach the 14 roundabouts on my commute and like seeing the revs drop to 800rpm and the fuel savings by simply doing nothing than the DSG putting itself into neutral effectively. We have decided to leave earlier tomorrow morning for our short break in Cumbria and this will be the longest trip the Superb has done this year with around 210 miles to our Hotel. Might take a photo of the range left when we get there and it should be in the 470-490 range judging by the only other time it left the County back when I went to AmD in Essex for the remap.

If you have the performance gauges in your 272 you might have noticed that when coasting in Eco, the is still idling & burning fuel. If you stay in drive, especially in a high gear the power meter drops to 0 Kw, rather than the 3 Kw when idling. As for paddles, we still like to be "in command" when we still see fit (twiddly roads with corners + up / downs do exist, even in Essex +  selecting S rather than D = unseemly pops & bangs, which are just too much for us oldies...) Much easier to make your own decisions re. when / where to shift gears, just like we used to in the old days, but with finger-tips rather than pumping the clutch pedal & stirring a gear lever.......

Mostly we leave our cars in "D" 'cos it's a calm & relaxing way to drive, especially in our dotage years, but we really like the finger-tip option, much safer than shifting manually with the stick (which is not available with the selector switch on the new generation Golf, Octavia, etc.) .

FWIW I've driven circa 300K miles in manuals & 270+K in automatics, (& back in the olden days they weren't much fun at all...), the 50K miles in various DSG's have been the best, so far.

As for longest trips in DSG cars, the ancient Superb has taken us to Austria, SWMBO's R wagon to Germany last year, my Eos also to Germany, & a few trips "oop North" as far as the Scottish Central Belt.

Hopefully the M6 from J16 to J40 northbound will be free of idiots and vehicles that catch fire tomorrow morning. Check in again Sunday evening or Monday morning with my nearly new tyres from @penguin17.

We do &/or did use the paddles on the lumbering barge, the overweight but still quite fun Eos, madam's Mk.2 FL Octy vRS + the reasonably nippy R hatch & Estate.

Dropping the shifter back into "S" mode is great for a rapid getaway, but we prefer a quieter life, (great age etc...) so we both use the paddles when we see fit, including slowing down. Nothing beats being in the correct gear for a corner or gradient change, without using the brakes....

Enjoy your trip, but there will always be idiots on the M6!

After a near 4 hour drive the wife decided we needed a short walk so nearly 6 hours and 13.5 miles later (21.6km) we returned to our hotel. It was only 28C in the Lake District.

Went to Gretna Gateway shopping centre on Saturday for some retail therapy bought wife some clothes and shoes and treated myself also and must have spent just over £200 but saved about £300 due to some cracking bargains in Nike, Next and Trespass shops. Collected the 4 Michelin lightly used tyres from @penguin17 and saw his stage 1 Golf R estate in white and his Revo map gave a strong 383bhp and over 500nm of torque. What a fantastic guy he is and very punctual arriving seconds after us as we parked at Penrith B & Q. He even threw in 3 freebies from his 280 hatch which would have cost me over £100 from a Skoda dealer to help protect the interior of my car. A true gent and I got that impression chatting to him on Briskoda and he will be a credit to the Golf R forums going forward. Came home a slightly different route so ended up clocking up 507 miles in just over 10 hours driving including the day trip into Scotland at an average of 50mph for the whole trip and filled with Tesco Momentum like on Friday before we left for an overall 44.55mpg and after 6,771 miles the car has now averaged 39.45mpg. Even my wife complemented the car on how comfortable the seats, ride and low noise from the Michelin Pilot Sport tyres on the whole journey saying it was much more comfortable than my previous car the Octavia Vrs245 on trips to Cardiff and The Isle of Wight and just as economical.

Some photo’s from our short break. The Coledale Inn was built in 1898 and has been refurbished since then. 2 Nights B & B is usually £199 and we paid for 2 nights dinner and evening drinks a total of £295.

Should have mentioned I used the ACC much more than usual on this trip (mainly on M6) and was surprised by how much I liked it and it had very little effect on economy having set it at 61mph (about 100kph) and car showing 1,750rpm in 7th gear.

Last 3 commutes giving a solid 41/42/39mpg which is reflected in the Long Term maxidot which was showing 1,501 miles covered at 45mph average in 33 hours 31 minutes today. Still faultless after more than 7 months and a Mk7 Golf GTi owner (either 227 or 242bhp) was shown the rear 4 x 4 badge going up the motorway slip road earlier causing much confusion no doubt.:mmm:Long Term maxidot average showing 40.3mpg.:)

You're leaving? Selling all your Skoda's & moving to a rival brand?, Or, is there a limit (annual or otherwise) to the quantity of posts per member?

Keeping both Skoda’s in fact I spent a couple of hours removing the 18” Braga alloys from the Karoq and putting my 19” Vega alloys from the Superb and then cleaning the Braga’s before storing them in the garage.

The 200 posts reference was made two days ago so has probably been exceeded already!

Superb having a rest for the next week while I do the 3 nights in the Karoq now with more grip and it even managed 54.1mpg on tonight's commute which is excellent. It will need fuel by Sunday morning as just passed 300 miles on this tank. Just for JB who can't count 23 posts to go until decision time.:whew:

Just as a reference and to avoid any other confusion then!

The magic number appears to be 13,013.

Well it's time for the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT some have been waiting for with baited (no worms thank you) breath and the first thing your thinking is this is post 13,014 and the shyster is still typing. Well I still enjoy the First Word so will continue contributing on there with my buddies and since January 3rd 2020 this thread has attracted no less than 26,505 views so someone on here must enjoy reading our journey with the Superb Sportline and it's baby brother the Sportline Vega shod Karoq SEL to give it the new catchy title. So if the good folks lined up along way behind me in 3rd, 4th and 5th in the popularity league table (and they don't care about how many points they accrue apparently) may have to put up with me but only now on 2 tiny sections of Briskoda and the Boss Colin D can enjoy poking fun at my near 40mpg economy in the Black Magic Beast of the Midlands.:hi:

Wonderful commute tonight must have to give it Triple Whammy Status because first the main road into our town about 400 metres from our house has been closed for the last couple of days leading to a lengthy diversion. That was step one and after 6 minutes driving I get held up for 5 minutes by the quarry train leaving the quarry at about 1mph. That is stage 2 and finally I get to the motorway sliproad and as I join the M1 southbound the radio/sat nav announces ACCIDENT on the M1 which becomes stage 3. When I stop I have been driving for 15 minutes and covered 8 miles so I'm still 19 miles from work. Various phone calls made whilst sat in the car without the engine running for 80 minutes due to the carnage ahead in 28C heat and I'm told on the radio (which I have to switch back on 3 times while I wait) that it is the hottest August day since 2003 (no **** Sherlock) and finally get to work 2hours 15 minutes after leaving my home for a normal 38 minute journey. Good thing I have plenty of patience-honestly I have despite the mini rant.:emoticon-0157-sun:

John I have a special feature just for you to criticise in 3 days time because you like to count. To keep you entertained in the meantime a good watch is the 4th August 2020 episode of Harry's Garage featuring Gordon Murray revealing the secrets of his new T50 Supercar which demonstrates all the good stuff he has learned being a vehicle designer in F1 and performance road cars over 5 decades. The normally aspirated Cosworth V12 engine revs to 12,000rpm and produces 663PS which is plenty in something that weighs just 986kg because Gordon has always been fascinated by saving weight. The alloy wheels are just big enough to cover the brake discs (composite carbon) and calipers so 20" rears with 295mm wide Michelin tyres and 19" front alloys with modest 235mm tyres. Amusingly that is the same size front alloys that both my wife's Karoq SEL and my Superb 272 hatch share with the same 235mm tyre width. Gordon's supercar will be limited to £2.5 million plus taxes for the lucky few able to afford and enjoy them.:hi:
