Living With A Sportline Plus 272 Hatch

Superb has 9,890 miles under its tyres and is resting for the next week as I do my alternating routine in the Birthday girl's Karoq for the next 3 shifts. It should finally reach 10,000 miles in 8 days time.

Noticed that the new RRP for the Superb Sportline Plus 272 hatch in the UK is now £39,920 which means unless Skoda dealers are offering free Metallic paint then any options such as a spare wheel for £150 will take you over the £40,000 VED tax break and lead to five years of £455 road tax. Not nice of Skoda UK, simply not clever. Karoq managed a solid 60mpg on tonight's commute with ambient temp of just 13.5C and at an average speed of 40mph (64kph).:whew:

I made the same mistake when specifying my Superb L&K Est 272 last year - kept the total price below the £40K limit only to find I could have safely gone well over. I can't remember the reason immediately but something like the 40K limit doesn't include VAT.  I think it was captured on the 280 thread. Didnt make much difference in the end as I when I placed the order the factory was shut down for the summer for refit so I ending up ordering one on the already built list.

40k for a skoda is bang out of order, I don't care how many options it's got

If you take registration fee and first year’s tax off the list price and then you are below £40k, then you do not qualify for the luxury car tax.

This example may help. It is for a Kia Stinger 3.3GTS which doesn’t qualify and is only £145 to tax even though it is over £40k OTR:

What’s not included in 'List Price'
Warranty/Insurance and service packages etc
Any non-standard option fitted by the dealer
Modifications such as ‘police packs’, ambulance/fire engine modifications
Modifications for disabled users
First registration fee and cost of first licence

For the Stinger GTS the only option is Premium Paint. That list price still falls below £40K at £39,905 so ALL Stingers fall below the 40K threshold and will only cost £145 a year to tax.
Retail Price £38,645
Premium Paint £665
Delivery £595
List Price £39,905

First Registration Fee £55
First year tax £1,850
On the Road Price £41,810

Probably true but that is the RRP not the actual buying price which is typically 20%+ lower after discounts etc. Final price makes it quite a bargain for what you actually get. I say bargain in inverted brackets as buying new is probably never the best option when buying a car.

Agree that's why I bought a 9 month old one with less than 5,000 miles on it and saved £15,000.☺️

Took me 1 minute longer to get to work tonight but improved from yesterday’s 60mpg.

Before the lockdown kicked in back in March my wife could walk to work in 10 minutes so she is covering a lot less miles than she did in the first year owning our Karoq SEL when she covered 12,334 miles at an average of 45.30mpg. Having recently passed 25,000 miles I thought I would update the fuel bought since new for her 1.5TSi petrol SUV. In total we have bought 548.63 gallons of 95 octane unleaded (2,494.05 litres) over 25,082 miles that works out to an overall average of 45.72mpg. It came with 2 free services and the 2nd (Inspection) one is due in 13,500 miles or 491 days. Apart from insurance at £210 per year and road tax last year at £145 (probably £150 next time) it has been very cheap to run. The purchase price of £23,500 new I calculate over 10 years so £2,350 per year in depreciation. It is still on the original Michelin tyres and original windscreen and rear wiper blades also. The brake fluid is original as are all the brake discs and pads. The 50 litre tank gives on average 500 mile range (10 miles per litre) and is just being filled once a month now she is working from home and I am using it 10 times per month for my commute. Last year my monthly fuel bill for both vehicles would have been £270 which has halved to around £135 and the quiet roads has seen both cars achieve personal bests recently of 49.3mpg for the Superb and 66.2mpg for the Karoq.:)It is nearly 30 months since we bought the Karoq.

Bigeater did you fit Koni dampers and lowering springs as well as your H & R rear ARB at CLP and what was the total fitted cost as I might try them later in the year for the same mods, thanks shy.

Only dampers and arb shy - They supplied and fitted both for a grand.

Got it guess you didn't want to lower it anymore. Are the dampers the Active ones?

I occasionally carry a lot of weight so unfortunately I cant afford to lower it. And yes to the active dampers 👍

My son took me back to collect my car from clp on Thursday evening.

Whilst we were sat outside in his car having a vape, I heard a car come speeding up the cul de sac and I thought that sounds nice I wonder what is?

I looked round and it was mine lol

Think they sound better when the loud pedal is mashed into the carpet. 7,000rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd are always a giggle considering how big the beastie is LOL.;)

No wonder this thread is 26 pages long with postings such as that. And it's preceeded by two pictures of meaningless fuel consumption from a Karoq !!!

Shy - Whatever part of your mindset thinks that another boring story about the fuel economy of your wifes Karoq followed by a boring out of focus photo of a boring white car in a boring near empty car park would be of any interest to those who've come to the Superb section to read a thread about living with a Superb SportLine 272?

If I were a moderator I think I'd be having a word in your ear because you're making threads in this forum very difficult to read. It's not fair on the rest of us.

Shy wouldn't have a clue what 7000 revs sounds like, spends 99% of his time at 700!  His won't rev anymore, inlet will be riddled with carbon.

Here is what happens to a E888 when you over rev it...  and how VAG catch the modifiers.... enjoy!

I did try to warn people of what to expect here near the start of this thread....

This thread was never going to be about 280ps Superb sportlines in general, it was dedicated from the outset as somewhere for shy to blog about himself, his lifestyle and decisions, and how he is some kind of driving god, which includes occasionally breaking the law (by quite a wide margin - 138mph on a UK public road is just one example), posting here about it and boring people to death with his mpg figures.

The videos from humble mechanic were excellent (as all his videos are). Interesting bit about the warranty voiding due to automatic modification detection.

I have to agree the karoq stuff is off topic .

likewise the videos were interesting.

they deserve a place of their own. So I’ll split them out shortly, before more karoq facts.

i did mean to post the other day that I was always advised not to run the car to empty too often for the fuel pump picking up sludge.

maybe not an issue in the age of plastic, but none the less, just a thought.

each persons car is there’s to do with as they see fit. They can share too, although be mindful of the audience. noting that always being in transmit mode has an effect of deafening and stifling discussion.

I took mine out the other day, seems the suspension(DCC) is a bit creaky. Quick check of the system, changed it a few times... sport mode and some B roads for thirty mins seems to have sorted it out. Also sorted the brakes and used up a considerable amount of fuel. Happy days.
