TMC traffic events no longer being received...firmware update required?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm new to the forums and like most people, I'm here because I've come up against something that has me stumped!

I have a 2018 Karoq, with a MIB2 Amundsen head unit. Currently using the latest official maps available on an original 16GB SD Card. At some point (not sure when but let's say over the past 2-3 months), the car has stopped receiving RDS-TMC traffic events. There is also a red diagonal line running through 'TMC', which suggests there is some problem with the feed of TMC traffic events to the car.

After various reading around the topic I have played with things like tuning in to local FM radio stations, turning dynamic routing off and on again, rescanning DAB and FM bands, etc. and nothing seems to have kicked it into action again. Checked in another car parked up next to mine, and it pulled scores of traffic events via RDS-TMC within a few seconds of being turned on, so I know it's not a problem with the TMC system itself. I've also wiped my SD card and reinstalled the maps again from scratch, but that had no effect.

I am beginning to think that this might be resolved with a firmware update, but happy to hear any alternative suggestions...?

Will post firmware version in a follow-up post.

Thanks in advance

I’m just letting any VW owners that may be lurking here know that I successfully reactivated the TMC on my mib 2 high using 32782 in the 5F module using OBD11 pro.

  • if YOU had contracted the third party, then yes, BUT it was Audi who contracted a third party to provide the service to YOU. Therefore it IS to do with them.

  • I think the vehicle age thing is a red herring. The dealer is spoke to checked his (newer) Golf which had the same problem.  He had checked their “hub” for any information and nothing was forthcoming

I have a 2016 Rapid with the same problem,  TMC stopped working about 1 month ago. Main dealer updated the firmware as it was the original , charged £99. TMC still has the red line through. Any suggestions?

Does it need you to have a valid Connect licence perhaps? And if so have you renewed it?

I believe Connect is the new system. It may be that the older system is now obsolete . Hoping someone can help?

I believe there are two separate ways to obtain traffic data, one is the more basic and free method of RDS-TMC traffic events, and the other is a paid for service where traffic information is provided via a data connection, e.g. via a SIM card or mobile hotspot tether. I'm trying to do the former.

Can't see TMC being turned off anytime soon, millions of drivers use it around the world. It has the advantage of not requiring a data connection as the information is transmitted via radio.

And as I noted in my OP, the system is clearly still on as I observed it working just yesterday in another vehicle, albeit not a VW group vehicle.

Just out of interest, since this didn't fix the problem, have they essentially given up and said they can't fix it?

and free method of RDS-TMC traffic

RDS-TMC is not free in the UK. The supplier of the maps needs to have included (and paid for) a TMC licence.

I remember a problem with a map update on the Ford sync system where Ford hadnt bothered to renew the licence and TMC stopped working if the maps were updated

What I meant was that it is free from the end user POV, unlike Skoda Connect.

I see there is another rather long thread on updating firmware - will post my firmware info there and see if a firmware upgrade is a) possible and b) resolves the issue.

I had this problem yesterday. Unticked the box in radio settings then ticked it again, and notifications came back.

Good to hear. Specifically what box did you untick and tick again, though? As far as I know, there is no way to turn TMC reception off or on.

Noticed the lack of traffic information recently on my 2018 SeL.  I don't hit traffic problems that often however I ventured into Essex, near Southend on Sunday and ended up with delays and roadworks on the A12.  Nothing showed on the Nav screen.

Just checked the car and...

Radio>Advanced Settings>Dab Traffic Announcements is greyed out

Nav>Map> Traffic Flow Setting is greyed out.

I'll raise at at the next service that is due now.

After checking I currently have exactly the same. Interestingly, the greyed out options are both ticked, which I previously assumed would mean these are settings that are enabled with no option to disable, but you could also link it to the TMC problem and assume they're in fact greyed out because TMC updates are not being received.

Further update, I have completed a firmware update thanks to another forum member, but unfortunately this appears to have made zero difference the problem. TMC still has a red diagonal line through it and the vehicle is receiving no traffic incident information.

Looks like I am lurching towards taking it to a dealer, unless anyone has any other suggestions? I will probably give it at least a week or so just in case this is a temporary problem as others have reported in the past.

A very small amount of progress was achieved after factory resetting all settings - the DAB traffic announcements is now no longer greyed out. I think the traffic flow setting was also not greyed out initially, but has since become greyed out again. Still no traffic events being pulled through via TMC.

I am going to try a general query to Skoda about whether they expect TMC to function for the lifetime of the vehicle, or if there are any problems with their own renewal of the TMC service. Will report back in due course.

I’m running a 2016 Superb with the same issue,  it definitely has worked in the past but noticed in the last week TMC has a red line through it.  I’ve not update maps or firmware so suspect something else is going on

The TMC stopped working just over a month ago after a Skoda annual service on my 2017 Rapid, TMC has a red line through it. I wondered if it was geographical as I understand it is transmitted on a FM radio signal but having been in the NW and Worcestershire it didn't start working.

It would be interesting to know if it is still being transmitted for Skoda's of this vintage.

Initial response from Skoda is to advise me to call Skoda Connect. I think this may be erroneous as the TMC service is not part of Skoda Connect, but will try it first anyway.

It would be interesting to know if anyone with a relatively new Skoda is experiencing this problem too. That would rule out something along the lines of the TMC reception being intentionally disabled by Skoda after a specified amount of time (e.g. vehicles over 5 years old, etc.).

I still doubt this is what has happened, as that would need to have been made clear to buyers at the point of purchase, i.e. TMC traffic report functionality included at the point of sale would be disabled after X years. My understanding is that this is how Skoda Connect works, where you get a certain amount of time included, and then it becomes at your own expense to keep it going beyond the original expiry date.

The dealership I spoke to went and checked. It’s affecting VW cars as well (the guy I spoke to has a golf and said his TMC function wasn’t working either). I would say this is a VAG wide issue (so possibly Audi, Seat and even Porsche are affected)

Good to know; if so many cars are affected it should hopefully mean that VAG will sort the issue quickly. As others have suggested, this could be down to VAG forgetting to renew their access to the TMC system. A bit of a shambles, really.

My previous car wasn't VAG and the TMC function worked fine for years, never noticed any break in service like this.

? ?  that VAG will sort the issue quickly ? ?  They don't seem to be in any hurry to correct/improve the current crop of  infotainment systems fitted to various models in various marques in their portfolio. Auto Express pointed out approx. two years ago that while they thought the cars themselves were good, the infotainment systems (various types) were not fit for purpose.

But then they've got our money, so why should they care ?.........................

Same issue on both our Superb & Octavia

Just spent a frustrating evening trying to get my recently failed TMC to work and glad it doesn't seem to be just me!

Just tried the wife's Seat Leon and her TMC has also packed up.

Both vehicles have been working flawlessly until this week. Looks more like a central issue with VAG than individual vehicles/age etc.

Thanks chriset.

There was me thinking it was just a problem with my, now old 2016 Superb 3, but I'm happy? Disappointed?  to hear that its a widespread problem.

I have begun to rely on this function for my long daily commutes, so I do hope that it is reinstated as soon as possible.

I'll keep watching this space.
