  1. You have a well designed system functioning perfectly, the thermostat has never even fully opened and yet you wish to add more cooling! A solution looking for a problem. Adding an additional fan and/or fitting a larger more efficient radiator will achieve nothing other than perhaps your fan(s) running less or not running at all and then you risk seizure and the day you do need the fan to work, a coolant leak etc it wont!
  2. No button presses, most people would know their way home from work and not need a shatnav or a mobile phone to navigate for them, you know, the sort of people that keep their eyes on the road and look (and know) where they are going. A dying breed I fear, more and more people spend 5 minutes at their destination staring into their mobile phones, probably did the same after getting in their car because they had to look where they were walking to get to their vehicle and judging by the amount of people that stop and block my driveway do the same several times during the journey. Still better that then them doing the same while driving staring at and pressing buttons on the glass tea tray taking up the middle of the dashboard.
  3. So VW/Toyota end up like Nokia is all okay? Millions of jobs at risk due to changes of owners, all for it to end up making ultra-low end products. Or be supplier to a software company. I find the comparison apt. This change to power train is indeed evolve or die. From company culture at the top, right down to production line and to the way software integrates with user experience. Not much different to smart phones vs Blackberry. GPS doesn't work the same way as mobile signals. Only short sections of road with no GPS, eg tunnels, which vehicles are able to account for using wheel measurements.
  4. As I was mentioning, I did try to see if the random reboots go away if I'm using AA with wifi & BTB off. (Just a reminder: in my case, the MiB reboot would occur immediately after the engine start - within the first 1-2 minutes) So as @Combi_NX5 mentioned, I turned off wifi and BT before approaching the car, started the engine and after that connected the phone via cable. The infotainment DIDN'T reboot in about 10 such tests over the weekend. Since I had several long trips, I took one step further and enabled the wifi on the phone while already being in AA for several minutes - an there was no restart! However, for each new trip I was approaching the car with wifi&BT off on the phone. Encouraged by the lack of MiB reboot, I also tried starting the car with phone wifi & BT ON - epic fail!!! In 2 out of 2 attempts the infotainment restarted... As @Combi_NX5 already indicated, the BT on the phone will be turned on after the cable is connected, and phone's BT will also connect to the car; but wifi stayed OFF on the phone, unless I decided to turn it ON during the trip. During all those tests I didn't touch the car's wifi and hotspot - it was always ON. To conclude, as Penguins of Madagascar were saying: "There's good news and bad news: the good news is we're landing! The bad news is we're crash-landing!" (scene at 1:20 in the link bellow for the original citation) And since the link is here - if any of you wants to know how I'm imagining the Skoda technicians are dealing with all the errors in MK4 - please have a look at the video between 0:45 and 1:20... ☹️ Later edit: King Julian seems to behave like the Skoda CEO 😉

Got an email from the dealer. My 1.5 TSI e-TEC with a lot of extras, ordered 12/21 is in destination harbor waiting to be transported to dealer. So pickup will be maybe friday, saturday.
  6. I hadn't been to Scotland for a while, so decided to get up there this weekend to try to escape the heat a little bit. The plan worked, it was 30C at home, and 17C, with a nice breeze (as you can see from the tent flapping a bit) up here. It is a damn good looking car!
  7. Not on a 16 plate but can beat it on a 17 plate. 2017 2.0 TDi 190BHP DSG and currently on 396700km. Still drives great.

Prices have gone mad. Skodas used to be seen as a brand for cheaper reliable cars. When I bought my MkII Octavia VRS at 6 month old in 2008 for £15K it was a fairly rare , solidly built and fantastic value for the money. I saw a 1.4 Hybrid Superb L& K online with 1000 miles for £53K ! That's twice the price I paid for my 6 month old 272 L&K with 2500 miles in Feb 2020. How can people afford to actually buy cars

Picking up my petrol 2.0 VRS next Monday! Ordered in January 2023 (I know, pretty fast).
  10. Race blue on race blue looks fantastic.
  11. I get that feeling everytime I look through the active topics section of this forum seeing threads running to hundreds of pages on subjects like TMC Traffic Events, Android Auto, Carplay, Adaptive Cruise Control, Skoda Connect, Road Sign Recognition, Auto-parking, Bluetooth and loads of others I can't recall, all the gimmicks totally unnecesary for the reliable functioning of a motor vehicle collectively called "tech" which it seems seduces people into selling or trading in perfectly serviceable vehicles to buy a new unreliable and flaky one. It pretty much dominates this forum now compared to the mechanical, electrical and latterly electronic problems which were the majority when I first joined, electronic problems relating to the primary functions, engine, brakes, door locking etc and not superflouos systems. It's not a complaint, simply an observation of the changing times, it would be interesting to see what were the typical subjects when the forum first started.
  12. If his vehicle has only ever registered 92°c in traffic in a Greek summer then I would say it is a well designed fit for the purpose cooling system for that is the temperature that the thermostat regulates the engine coolant to. If it were frequently going above 100°c meaning the thermostat is no longer regulating leaving only the cooling fan & thermoswitch then there is some argument to increasing the cooling efficiency as a precautionary measure. Ditto if you are tuning the engine or racing on a short twisty circuit.
  13. How well designed or not it is coping well according to what D.FYLAKTOS has put.
  14. How much of that success is just people wanting the latest trending thing, though, especially in light of the various safety concerns over touchscreens? Millions of people adapt to all sorts of new technology, but that doesn't mean it's the best technology... It often only proves that marketing strategies work. I get a lot of fanboyism from the guys at work with EVs, but when I look at what they have to go through and spend all their time doing just in order to drive a car... A pushbike starts to look surprsingly attractive!
  15. Can you post a picture of the build codes sticker near/in the spare wheel well please?
  16. Might sound daft but have you checked that the brake servo hose hasn't become detached and open to atmosphere following the cattle grid? Think another ECU might throw immo system, but it might start and run for a few seconds before cutting out due to that. Could be informative?
  17. Pics of the damage. Intercoolers bust through the splitter, not sitting right on the bar either but it's not bust. Happily the new genuine undertray seems to have held up, impressed. See the exhaust has flattened at the bottom, again, cosmetic and not a big deal. Pretty impressed it stuck so much abuse especially with my apparent skill issue. Made it back to the ferry safe And home from there Just over 1000 miles on the trip meter. Definitely wants a good going over now. And it turns out I have a spare foglight to throw in for now too. Gonna respray the lip soon, it needed doing anyway so not a big deal. 145k on it now and somehow still going. I'll upload any more pics I get of mine here If the ferry was any cheaper I'd be over every weekend.
  18. So, Invading England: Around the penines again. Roads rough as ever. Intercooler and sprayer helped massively with heat soak. It ran a LOT better this year. The K brace and the caster increase bushes helped a lot, as did the new brakes, they were needed. Did an awful lot of brisk driving, got caught in standstill traffic in Penrith and the car starting ticking really bad. Figure it was running very hot. Thankfully as soon as I got out of gridlock the ticking went away and hasn't come back. Some beautiful views. Did hartside pass quite a few times, busy spot. Saw an RS3 on its roof near the end just before Alston. Thing behaved very well for what it is. On the last big drive last night I sent it a bit hard and did some damage. Hit a very rough cattle grid at a brisk pace and made ****e of the backbox, bottomed out hard. Thankfully it just slipped off the hangar but it was only when it was sparking off the road that I noticed. Oops. Then pulled into a lay by with a big ass hole and destroyed the splitter and broke the tab on the drivers foglamp. Minor damage and not a big deal to me since the fogs were rough and the splitter was needing paint anyway.
  19. Just back from my big trip. Just over 1000 miles done in 5 days. Gonna start with stuff that I did before going away. So I wanted to hook up a cb that was lying about for this trip. Wired up temporarily with a fuse tap and mounted into the cubby beside the headlight switch. Used a mag mount and strapped it to the roof. Then set about giving the car a full detail before setting off. So wheels off, checked all the brakes suspension etc. Washed and detarred the arches, painted the brakes again. Washed, decontaminated, polished and sealed the alloys. Photos are a bit out of order here but anyhow, original grille was flaking so sprayed a spare one and swapped it out. Came out fantastic for a rattle can job. Grilles out, cleaned the spots, polished the intercooler. Also took the fogs out as the tints were flakey, got some tint spray paint and tried it. Did not end well These fogs are pretty beat and cracked, recently got new ones for another monte for £35 a side, so will buy some new ones and tint them again, eventually. Very fine machine polish, then a few coats of glaze, then waxed. Lucky I have the justy on the road so can actually have this sitting for more than a few hours now. Can see the painted fogs now, looks alright from a few feet but not happy with it. As I say they needed changed anyway.
  20. You already have an electric fan which has enough mass airflow capability to cool a hot but idling engine in city traffic. Been there, done that...
  21. Few pics of this turned up. Also found the government's e10 checklist says any subaru after Jan 31st 1991 is good for it. Then found another which states the same, except all vivios and justys before April 1994. Nice. Closest station to me is a fair drive but looks like I've no other options as all fuel stations near me use e10.
  22. As always, give me a shout if you're across here again! Aye, documented it just now on my own thread. About the guts of 13 hours driving from Ayr down to Newport via Largs, Castle Douglas, and Stoke-on-Trent.
  23. Still not been up your way to meet you. Did you do skodafest? Must do it next year if it's on. More photos from the weekend Good meet (impreza is a complete stranger, very cool car though) Noticed a guy next to a red celica taking photos as we went down, must try hunt down them photos. Halfways hiding regs, don't care about mine but don't know if anyone else does so. Fitted the spare lamp. Cars beaten and smokes even more when it's cold now. Definitely deserves a some downtime for repairs. If it gets it though, I doubt it.
  24. Please spare a thought for us Pentium 4 users in this heat. Please. Speaking of, I fitted the NetBurst Celeron @@Lee sent me. I haven't started the system yet, but most likely will do tomorrow as it'll be my first day off after six shifts on!
  25. Can’t compare to a vRS, but in my 1.5tsi the red light will come on with a range between 55 and 85 miles. It’s usually in the range 65 - 75 miles though. As @toot say, depends on recent average mpg.
  26. I have been following this with interest, and quite a bit of frustration as it appears that those of us with older cars may be out of luck. But there may be some hope! I have an early 2014 petrol 220 VRS with perhaps unusually a winter pack and MIB1 Amundsen head unit. Sorry not sure if this was standard for that 1st half of year 2014. I found TMC quite useful, as although I have a Garmin satnav, that predates my purchase of the car, the satnav does not have TMC, and it is so old now live traffic though Garmin’s smartphone link is not supported, and from the reviews I have seen live traffic may have data size and power drain isue on phones anyway. MIB 1 maps updates ended in 2020/2021 so when I noted some posts about older maps having the INRIX data and one from Tell with the settings to adjust “15 is no online traffic, Trafficmaster RDS TMC 14 is no online traffic, ITIS/INRIX RDS TMC “ I thought lets have a look as I have Obdeleven Pro My unit was coded with 15 So I tried setting it to 14. I then turned off the ignition, removed the key, removed the Obdeleven Pro dongle. Turned car back on and then reset the Head unit by pressing the power button for about 10 seconds. Once the satnav got going (takes a minute or two) I waited a couple of extra minutes and when I pressed TRAFFIC button I have TMC back! Given that there are no newer maps for MIB1 This may mean some inaccuracies on the TMC reports, but from what saw all looks as good. I still use the Garmin sat nav which still gets map updates for actual driving, but having TMC back is good as in the past it has saved me from some holdups. The most recent maps file I downloaded was STD1_P94_EU_202022.zip but looking in the zip it is described as SystemName=" ECE 2020/21 " I hope this is of some use to people with MIB1 Amundsen units.
  27. I was, of course, referring to what we the users user rather than any background or alternate business they move in to. Several car manufacturers have partially moved away from making cars and now use Toll manufacturers but it is still their badged product. TVs the same, mainly Toll manufactured. That is my point. Unless German (excluding TESLA's Gigafactory) and Japanese manufacturers involve, ie they take the cue from the tanking sales figures and loss of positions in the best sellers chart, then they better look to peripheral areas to work in ie car software, no wait VW have proved to be not too good at that, or something else as China and TESLA are topping the charts in the world's best selling model and country doing the most exporting. I hope the ID2 is a really winner else VAG is probably toast.
  28. Not having home charger seems to be the biggest source of problem. There's a lot less mucking about when driving EV's and recharge at home. I've visited public infrastructure probably around 5 times over last 8 months. All other times re-energising the car is not a consideration and no time is wasted on it. This push-back against "tech" is sad to see. Cars are driven by emotional beings that are often distracted. Yes, touchscreen have the potential to distract. But I'd take driving past a car with a good touch screen and assistive tech over a 1990's style basic car. The driver is usually the source of problem, having the assistive tech could potentially makes it safer. I think problem is often bad touch screens and bad UI. I try not to operate touch screen in my previous Octavia or Leaf while driving, the UI is bad and it's slow. Whereas I've no problem with quick presses on the Tesla. It's very responsive and most-used items are on the screen ready to be pressed, at worst it's 2 presses using muscle memory. Put it this way, how quick can you get in your car and start driving home after work, with sat-nav set to home. How many button presses? My previous Octavia is 2 press to set sat-nav, turn the key and change gear. My Leaf is 3 presses to set sat-nav, press ON and change gear. My Tesla is change gear. It integrates with my calendar and pattern, otherwise it's a single swipe of address field to navigate home. Point is, not all touch screen are created equal. I have more faith in Volvo's Google UI (I think?) than VAG or far-east car brands' attempt at writing software.
  29. Audi’s RNSE platform has this option also. The system is just displaying the radio stations that are advertising a service via the TMC flag. It doesn’t mean it can correctly decode the messages from them all though. RNSE for example is missing the necessary TMC Location Tables for INRIX (confirmed by examining the database). Only Trafficmaster locations are present. So while RNSE displays a selection of “Heart”, “Capital” and “Classic” in the TMC selection menu (along with an “auto” option) trying to force the TMC function to use “Classic” doesn’t switch to INRIX because it’s missing the required database. Of course MMI3G may be different, but regardless it should be necessary to force using the correct FM network. The system will use any network (in the default “auto” mode) for which it holds a suitable location table.
  30. You're right; I forgot to mention - I also unplugged the cable for that part of the test and there was no system reboot. But I was 10 or more minutes into the trip (after the engine start). I was wondering: is this infotainment restart occurring also for those using Apple CarPlay? I don't quite remember seeing such posts on this topic... I remember them having problems with Waze or GMaps displaying with strange colors or lines, even freezing, but no restarts...
  31. What a joy being back in a right hand drive ICE vehicle with no screen in the middle of the car with any setting, or loads of stuff on the steering wheel and just the stuff needed to occasional change with a left hand when right handed like me. Voice activated phone and satvav that functions well is a boon. Via a mobile / smart phone. Waiting your turn occasionally for a few minutes to get to a petrol / diesel pump maybe behind someone towing a caravan is a treat compared to waiting for a EV towing a caravan or just a big battery vehicle wanting to charge to as full as they can get. Why do many in EV's drive just below or well below the NSL much of the time other than when in the vicinity of a charger hub when they are desperate to beat you to it? Is this what all the performance is for with these cars, loads of show and go rather than range efficiency?
  32. The box above pedals is mainly controlling body functions like wipers, rear screen heater, interior lights, horn etc. It does coexist on the same circuitboard with the CAN gateway though.
  33. Thanks for the video link. Already looked at about a dozen of these. It turns out the metal band was a remnant of the dust boot that had come away. I prised it off with a screwdriver and as you can see in the photo and now it is just a regular ol caliper that can be rebuilt . t does seem however that the boot was stuck to the caliper as there is no groove for it to slide into.
  34. No, this is still current.
  35. That wheel is totally repairable by any reputable alloy wheel refurb place. And will be just as strong as a new rim at a fraction of the cost.
  36. Thank you! Apologies! I'm new to this site as I'm sure you can tell!
  37. Be aware this more expensive diesel is not Premium Diesel like their ESSO Synergy Supreme+. http://esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels It is about being green and maybe you get less mpg and paying more to get that. http://esso.co.uk/en-gb/hvo-faqs
  38. Volvo getting it right where nearly all European HQ'd car companies get it wrong, piling up the debt, car sales shrinking and not making EVs at a profit. With Volvo having a premium brand image but with Chinese tech and efficient production, great new models like the EH30 and EH 90 coming out to great plaudits it is looking with Volvo, backed by owners Geely, have the right recipe for keeping and even increasing market share in this time when TESLA sweep almost every other car maker in to oblivion.....

50k = mileage I believe. Oh, and our 280 is definitely a keeper.
  40. Felicia has a big hole under the engine, I could feel hot air coming out of the engine underneath and the car - and that was with the weak motor of the non-ac 1.3. With AC, you have two speed fan, if it's not kicking to second speed, you have plenty of cooling.
  41. Once correctly set, I've used a pencil to put marks on the underside of roof bars to put my roof box at the same position each time I use it. A thin Onyx marker would be Ok too.
  42. Try to find one thats been loved and not thrashed by up and coming F1 drivers 1/ Find out when the timing belt was done last, it should be every 30k miles or sooner. 2/ Engine oil changes, how frequent, should be every year or 12k miles. I use Castrol 5/30 Fully Synthetic always with a new oil filter. 3/ Petrol, they love Shell V Power thats all mine gets. 4/ Look at the welded sill lip, if it has been crushed its because its been jacked on them, they should not be used to jack the car, there are jacking points underneath and you will need a low profile aluminium jack to get underneath, (about £100), or the jack with the car if its still there. 5/ The Y breather pipe on top of engine on right side ( viewed from front) gets soft and can split causing all sorts of running probs. 6/ Try to get a standard map one, at the most a Stage One mapped. 7/ They were sold from new with a full size matching alloy spare wheel. The car will have had parts that wear out ie front and rear supspension bushes. If there is a clonk from the front when you drive off its usually the Dog Bone bushes. They are easy to replace many polyurethane kits available, about half a hour with car on ramps or jacked up on stands. Good Luck with your search Peter NB: Mine is coming up for its 18th birthday, there are older ones on here still flying strong
  43. If it’s the estate then they haven’t got locating holes
  44. Hastily taken through the windscreen shot of a 1975 Porsche, at sunset, Beachy Head last night: Would've got out and taken more/closer snaps, but he drove off the wrong way 🙄 Gaz
  45. I suspect the 'swerved' was an auto-correct from an intended 'answered'?
  46. 110k service, can’t remember the last time I’ve only done 10k in a year!
