  1. Managed to catch it just before it disappeared.................
  2. First is Heavy Good vehicles working to and from ports / harbours, Free Ports where there is hydrogen being produced and vehicles doing shorter runs that are using hydrogen and in forests and estates there are logging lorries being trialled, then there are the bus fleets already running on hydrogen like in Aberdeen. (Or not running as issues arise). Commercial vehicles are operating in Fife running on hydrogen, but then in Dundee the Council fleet is going Electric. The mix is needed, location location location and horses for courses.

Of course not, it's rampant speculation from a master of magical thinking. The oil consumption issue was down to the use of mismatched piston rings and bore liners which meant the engine was almost impossible to run-in properly resulting in bore glazing, this same problem existed on the earlier 1.4 16V engines like the AUB as well, elderly buyers simply didn't drive the engines hard enough to get the rings sealing properly. It took a few months of brutal thrashing to get mine to seal up, I bought it on 49k and gave it to a family member at 110k. Modern synthetic oils are fantastic, you can't buy a bad one, brands have become completely irrelevant since the base stock is available wholesale for individual formulation using custom additive packs.
  4. Tiny hit tbh for AC or heating probably in the region of 5% or 10% on a crazy cold/hot day way outside what you’ll find here. Speed/driving style would have a far bigger effect. Talking of AC, car on an AC charger, set meeting end time plus 15 minutes, got into a car at 20 degrees with full range rather than hot hot hot. Much harder to do that in an ICE car and the EV can pre heat/cool from battery if really needed.
  5. Because they are 6 speed. & see my edit on the EV cost. He says 34.5 kWh home charge, but has set off with a full battery which is 64 kWh. AS SAID IN THE VIDEO, "Completely topped up. Full tanks, full batteries". 34.5 kWh would have been just about 110 miles before he needed a charge, maybe sooner. These guys can not do basic man maths let alone EV man maths. Doh! 86 kWh for 278 miles. 3.2 miles per kWh 64 kWh @ 30 pence £19.20 22 kWh @ 75 pence £16.50 = £35.70. Then it happens that the electricity left in the car cost 75 pence a kWh. & When he did the town run he only got 2.88 mile a kWh. *It was £7.88 if it was the following day because he had paid 75 pence a kWh on the previous trip.*
  6. Hello to all my fellow Skoda Superb aficionados! As the title suggests, I'm about to venture into the mysterious realm of window tinting. I've scheduled an appointment for tomorrow, and the butterflies—or maybe they're just floating dust particles from the old Columbus head unit—are buzzing. The Tint Plan: I'm leaning towards a 5% limo tint on the rear side windows and something a bit less intense on the rear boot window. Because let's be honest, as much as we adore the mysterious aura that the limo tint provides, seeing out of the back window at night became its own sort of adventure last time. Plus it sure makes ad hoc dogging less dangerous. Been There, Done That: I've actually gone full limo tint on a previous Superb I owned, and let me tell you, it was great but with one glaring issue, at night when the rear-view turned into a black hole. I just couldn't really see out the back window at night. Honestly, during the day was only just bearable, but at night I couldn't see ****, thank goodness for parking sensors. Style vs. Practicality: My Superb is a black estate, and I must confess, there’s a small, nagging worry in the back of my head. Will the limo tint elevate the car's cool factor, or will it make it look like I'm chauffeuring spirits to the afterlife amping up the hearse-vibe? Perhaps I’m just reliving my Goth phase, but I’d love to hear what you all think. Questions for the Hive Mind: Have any of you taken the plunge and tinted your windows? How did you balance style and practicality, particularly for night driving? For those of you with black estates, did the tint push your car’s aesthetic into 'funeral director chic'? Any suggestions for tint percentages that have worked well for you? Your collective wisdom and shared experience would be greatly appreciated! If you've tinted your windows and your Superb still looks more like a luxury liner than a hearse, I'd love to hear about it. Cheers to tinting, but hopefully not too much squinting! 🥂🚗
  7. Be brave, go for it. It might well look like a private ambulance / funeral directors car but fill your boots. Night vision is no worse than driving a van and there are lots of van drivers. What is the worst that can happen, maybe a hard stop by Police Scotland officers and they shoot you dead.
  8. If you have a drive, then an EV charger is possible and an EV can be charged at 2-3p per mile. if you don’t have a drive, then either keep what you have or go for a range extender hybrid (electric drivetrain, engine is a generator only). I think freight will be hydrogen and just like high mileage drivers used to use diesel but everyone normal was petrol, the long range/short stop time drivers might have hydrogen fuel cells.

I would not let Halfords service or blow up tyres on a push bike, let alone fit wiper blades. Go where there are people not just with the gear and ideas, but nothing between the ears.
  10. Just want to say thanks for sharing all the good info on this thread! Like the very first post on the thread we were in France on holiday a couple of weeks ago and 1896 put us in the SOS + sensors + drive assist failure and rapid 4x reboot followed by blank screen with no access to climate settings, satnav, and music. Managed to get up and running with the tip from earlier in the thread to change the privacy setting from default “share location” 👍 Booked in for software update in a few weeks time 🤞

Welcome. Not very high then above the normal indicated 92 *oC or so. 110*oC indicated must mean you have good oil, a good oil level and the weather was not too hot, or you were not going that quick or the car loaded, as in it was about where it should be, and if it goes higher it should come back down to there, and as you slow and the fans do their job it drops again to near the 92*oC indicated.
  12. Better not get a car park full of automatic SUV or those daft oversized pickup trucks… who know what could happen, they might cause car parks to collapse 😂😂😋 Im glad the typical space size is increasing, although I’d still like a little more width due to above mentioned cars and an amazing inability to get near the centre of a bay.
  13. This MOST EV drivers, is the issue. MOST EV Drivers might not be charging at home, have a smart meter or wall box, and if they are charging at home might need to use a 3 pin charger. Even if just for weeks or months because getting chargers can be a fiasco not explained at Car Dealerships. It is good for the basics, and to give people the general idea. But to stress the Full tanks and batteries, then show the 34.5 kWh @ 30 pence a kWh. The 64 kWh was going to be OK for 205 miles, but you would want on to a charger by 190 miles at the latest if doing such poor efficiency. So if you were to want not just 100 mile of a charge as in 31 kWh but 150 miles so 45 kWh it is going to cost you. As it is, not their money, paid to do it, not that far off being correct, but then if you do the same trip, week in week out, or a few times a week you will be doing it cheaper than that and not paying 75 pence a kWh at InstaVolt. Maybe not driving in ECO either when you know how to drive efficiently. 3.2 miles a kWh might be expected with passengers and stuff in a Niro EV.
  14. Just so fundamentally flawed. Most EV owners will be charging at home at below 10p per kWh and of course use the full battery to around 80% of it and just top up 10, 15 or 20 kWh in a 278 mile journey in any of the longer distance EVs and I include the Zoe in that as a small but longer distance EV, even if I was only getting 3 miles per kWh at UK national speed limits. 42 kwh of home charge used minimum and 42 kw of public charging, at worse cost £4 plus £30 at worst for public charging for a non TESLA but that is still high as most EV drivers who distance have some sort of deal with one or more of the charging network, Electroverse in my case ie 5% or more discount and do not even see the bill until month end. If one has a TESLA and as DAVE TAKES IT ON is ift saying TESLA drivers are paying about half that non TESLA pays. It will be great to see the rapid expansion over the up coming months as the V4 charge station can be used by non-TESLAs. As usual a very unreal comparison done the uninitiated may see and view as a proper set of data when it is actually very far from that. Also an 8 mile diversion to get a charge, a mile or so would be more normal Banbury, Braintree, Cambridge, Norwich, Oxford, Reading, Rugby and each hundreds of metres of the main road not 4 miles.
  15. Probably not that worrying as it'll probably be a factor of safety applied to a worst case loading scenario where the loadings are well above typical ones. Eg in the UK for a building roof you'd design for heavy vertical snow loading but also do separate calcs for wind loading with side walls open or closed to give variations on roof load and uplift etc. All of these loading change depending upon location in the UK to reflect varying weather etc. but are intended to simulate worst case scenarios that you then design the structure for with factors applied to each element on top. I'd imagine aircraft design is similar (to be honest I can't remember exactly from my time working at a company that made aircraft propellors, fuel systems and landing gear).

So, last weekend, I had the misfortune of meeting a Muntjac deer whilst on my way home from King's Lynn... Damage was (on first inspection) fairly light, and - importantly - didn't seem to need a replacement bumper. So I drove down to Wings Škoda in King's Lynn early this week and had a chat with Andy, the very helpful parts chap. I ordered three new parts - the lower grill, the chrome strip for the lower grill*, and the expanded polystyrene bolster that sits between the front crash bar and the front bumper. Total cost £180ish... My mate Dave and I started work this morning... With the front bumper removed, the damage looked awful...
  17. Guys, I'm getting the dreaded rattle on cold startup. 1.8Tsi Cdaa engine. It lasts approx 1 second before quieting down. There's no other rattles, chain is very quiet the rest of the time. I'm thinking it needs a replacement tensioner. Am I correct in saying the tensioner runs off oil pressure and weakens over time hence the initial rattle? Can any Skoda/VW techs help with a part number please? Autodoc are saying this is the part but they are very vague and gave me 3 different options...all different. 🤷 VIN is TMBBB73TXA9017287 Miles are 79k TIA Andy

Recently my air con became ineffective in my Rapid. (65 plate) It no longer blows cold air. Earlier this year I changed the air filter and pollen filters so they aren't clogged. I had a health check done at Halfords which showed no leaks, pressure is stable. They said it doesn't need a regas. What other issues is likely to cause this? Compressor problem or something else? Thanks in advance.
  19. As the topic suggests hopefully act as bit of a dumping ground for all the random accessories or favourites people have added to their superb. Mine at the minute has to be my detachable towbar. Still keeps the good looks of the car but I can stick it on when I need to put the bike or trailer on. What's your faboirutie?
  20. No they don't. Driver / passenger front and windscreen only. Now there is the impossible to see into front screens about though. Just horrible IMO and i have no style or taste.

Don't be sorry, you're absolutely right to call this nonsense out if it doesn't pass the sniff test. It's called putting the cart in front of the horse, it's like a doctor giving someone with a brain tumour some paracetamol for their headache. Ridiculous.
  22. @numskullwhere do you get the 3 year thing? Only ever known it to be 40k.
  23. 1 point
Seriously? This isn't about attitude, opinions or your limited experience as an owner/driver. It's a technical matter based upon the existence of facts, I've seen every kind of engine failure you can imagine, believe me there really aren't that many reasons why an engine goes pop and the reason for this is that engines all work the same way, are made of the same stuff and get driven by the same idiots.
  24. 1 point
I thought Halfords were perhaps trying to get more money out of me than required. They were saying around £93 for an air con service. I still suspect it just needs a regas but I'm not an expert on air con.
  25. I think you might be right, I looked at the spare parts diagram and the valve assembly is shown as an individual part so it can probably be replaced if you can get the old one undone without breaking anything, although alloy into alloy is notorious for corroding permanently into place.
  26. Yes, leads only last a couple of plug changes, they're consumables as well. I reckon you've fixed it.
  27. 64000 km sounds a bit early for bearings. 🤔 Unless roads are in poor conditions in the neighborhood ?…
  28. 280 miles 200 miles from home charging in depth of winter, let’s be pessimistic and say 3p/mile. £6 Again, be pessimistic and add 100 miles, 25kwh at supercharger, typical price at 35p/kWh = £ 8.75 Total < £15 Of course, home charging is a luxury and pretty much a requirement for cheap EV ownership. But single charging driveway space can charge 3 cars with some planning, for multi car households. Go up to EV sun forum and see my thread on EV tariff for 2.5p/mile motoring.
  29. It wasn`t the nicest job I`ve ever done, but the Febi loom was from ebay at £42.99 and I found it wasn`t exactly the same and had 3 wires left over. I found it best to take some photos of the layout, so that you always have a ref to go back to as the wires vary in size, just make a note in a pad as you do it and it should be fine. I used inline connectors and shrink wrap on each connection and then grouped them together in the door, just be careful of the window guide. The new wires are certainly more flexible, but assume they harden over time. Hope this helps and best of luck.
  30. That's an abbreviation of the full part number, 971 cut out of the middle. Full number is 5J0971120GP. That was superseded in 2014 by 5J0971120HH, currently £135.72 Inc VAT retail at Skoda. LLL parts, linked in posts above, may well be cheaper even after postage costs.

Are seems ok then I’ll just keep an eye on it. It’s done around 91000. the heldex got done on the last service just over a week ago

If you cross the channel and the roads are good and you are fully loaded and up above 100 mph and it is around 125-130*oC you will still be fine. If you are towing a caravan in the UK in this weather and it is up about that you are still fine. Just out of interest & unrelated but how many miles has your car done, and has the Haldex been serviced correctly every 3 years / 30,000 miles? So at least twice.
  33. @lol-lolNot much from using AC, but it does depend how many degrees you are asking it to reduce the interior temp, is it bringing 26 *oC down to 16*oC or maybe not 10 degrees just 5 degrees. But that is as it has been with many vehicles, ICE or EV. The thing is if you have 200 miles range showing and put on AC & it then shows 194 miles, no big deal. If you have a small battery and maybe not a EV only model car but something built from an ICE model the 5 miles or even 10 miles drop in range can happen. As it is in warm weather no big deal. If you need AC just to keep the windscreen clear then it is about poor design / engineering. @cheeZeygrinI have been sitting this week charging with windows open AC on as no breeze. I sit charging heater on and windows a bit often in lots of weather including winter conditions. But that is where wind deflectors are important when it is peeing down or snowing. I am seriously going to miss Wind Deflectors & regret having a car that as the windows drop as the frameless door opens water pours in if it is raining.
  34. Many us with EVs have heat pumps so using air con is not much of a hit on energy usage ie range.
  35. It has been reported, but the only person I could see who did was Derek Conway. If you have your AC on at 19C, that makes your consumption worse as you're drawing power to drive the AC. I normally have mine set at 21 or 22C to use it as little as possible. But as these mk3s are not built to the same standard as the mk2s, I find that when I get in the car is like a bloody sauna, so turn the AC down 16 or 17C to rapidly take the temperature down and then I gradually turn it up again as the car cools down. If I don't I find, like I'm cooked, as I get older I find I don't like heat so much, 21/22 is fine if your not doing anything, attempt to do anything at those temperatures and I become a walking puddle of sweat. I like you, coast down hill, even if it is a slight incline downwards, I always try and take advantage of it.
  36. If you go into the settings section and under adaptive cruise control there will be certain settings to turn off the adjust to road and adjust to signs
  37. Kia website says 6 speed.
  38. EDIT. Strange. 280 mile round trip and he must have done 200 miles from the home charge which he says was 34.5 kWh. Well he got the car with charge in it. It is a 64 kWh usable battery. 64 x 3 miles a kWh = 192 miles. so he was getting better than that. Because he pays for 51.5 kWh @ Instavolt for the 80 miles, to have 150 miles for safety. 51.5 if you was getting just 3 miles a kWh is the 154.5 miles. (64 kWh @ 30 pence was / is £19.20 before ever going on a public charger, someone pays to charge it, even if it was KIA that supplied the car. ......................... That is the cost for you, me and another makes 3 who pays for their private vehicles and travel. For the business driver it is can be a very different mater of cash money from their or the companies pockets.

Thanks Chris. Actually, sorted by a neighbour’s kid, who was looking at the car as “my dad’s got a white one”, and I was going to ask his dad, when the kid knew all about everything. Don’t they all!😂
  40. Today I decided to finally look at properly addressing my smelly aircon. The problem is common. When you turn off your aircon, an awfull smell fills the cabin a few minutes later, particularly noticeable for the front passenger. This is because water condensed on the evaporator surface warms up allows a resident bacteria soup to become active and start farting as they multiply. I have a RHD car with climate control so they may be slight differences. I used a cheap aircon cleaner (bomb) about £4 from the usual places. Some may disagree with step 3 but this is what I did. Step 1. Remove the expanded polystyrene cover (stiff fibre cover on later models) in the passenger footwell. Pulling down carefully to avoid breaking it, if it isn't broken already. Step 2. Remove the pollen filter, pictures and instructions to do this are elsewhere on the forum. Maybe some kind soul will post a link. Clean out debris inside the housing, mainly tree/plant seeds in my case. Wet strong kitchen roll paper is what I used with some disinfectant. Only limited access is possible but removed/cleaned what I could. Step 3. Refit the bottom filter support bracket/seal but without the pollen filter. Step 4. Ignition on, turn on recirc, switch to Econ (no A/C). Check the recirc flap is open. This is the hatched flap in the pic below, under the housing in the top of the passenser footwell towards the door side Locate the aircon bomb using best Heath Robinson skills so it points directly at the recir opening. Step 5. Start engine, re-check recirc on, fan on medium, econ mode (a/c off), temperature to low. Set the bomb off spraying directly at the recirc intake and close all doors/windows. Leave for 5-10 minutes, turn off the engine and leave for a further 5-10 minutes. Step 6. Refit the pollen filter. In my case as it was relatively new I just cleaned it up with a vacuum cleaner. Step 7. Refit the polystyrene/fibe cover The reason I posted this is I never knew for sure where the recirc air intake was and previous attempts at using an aircon bomb without removing the footwell cover had not been that great at reducing the pong for very long. Only time will tell if this attempt is better.
  41. You can ask nicely & politely if they can have the person responsible for warranty claims and inspections to check what your issue with the car / component is and if it is a Warranty issue have it repaired. If you want to tell them to fix it and it is not a warranty item then be prepared to have to pay to have them do it if Skoda / Warranty provider is not. Fixing it yourself might be cheaper though.

I can't believe how stupid this sounds, it's like a quote from some sort of demented Bill Bailey gig. Why can't you just make the sounds with your mouth? Brrrrm, psssh! Brrrrm, psssht! Too-wit-too-woo... Etc.
  43. No, petrols have it as well - both my previous 1.4TSI and my current 1.8TSI have them.
  44. Before & after again. 12mm spacers fill the arches just right, with no rubbing. I probably could have done 15mm but I use the car for towing and disn't want to risk it.
  45. Before & after pictures. Barely noticeable drop which is exactly what I hoped for.
  46. Took it back up to crail last weekend. New fastest time and trapping a lot faster than it did on the old engine. Vs 500whp corsa c Fn2 civic Astra VXR 2jz s13 Next one was the fun one Vs b204 Astra As you can hear shifting from 2nd to 3rd and didn’t have a 3rd gear. On my mounts they are solid mounts which have spacers on them like this the nut had came off and the spacer came out and lodged itself in the cable engine pulling the linkage out when I changed gear 😂 thankfully an easy fix. Darkside wanted the car at a show down their way so it went down at the weekend. when the car originally went on this engine it was given a base map then every since then it was remapped remotely on the road so never knew how much power it made. It’s also got some new experimental cams as well and thought why not see how much power it has. Certainly surprised us and explains why it’s faster than it was before! Now on 172 dyno pulls on darksides dyno 😂 Some from the show

Soon, the old girl as looking as good as new... 😎 *footnote from first post - the chrome strip is made from purest unobtainium, fashioned by blind nuns in the Carpathian Mountains. Hence, the retail price of £104...🤦‍♂️
  48. Pretty sure they don't run a clutch. Haven't done so for 10 years maybe more. It's a variable displacement air con pump isn't it?
