  1. .. and fixed, looks like someone cracked the oil filter housing by overtightening at the last service or something along those lines. Anyways, fixed for now, car will be swapped tomorrow. Replacement is a business grey Kodiaq from 2018, 110kW 4x4, 5 seater, leather, DSG, nav, LEDs, heated front and rear seats. Should be an interesting swap.
  2. I wasn't saying the fact it was a VAG wide issue excused the problems customers faced..... I was correcting your statement that "SKODA" had damaged customers trust by taking so long to remedy the issues when in fact it wasn't Skoda at all but VAG. In the same way it wasn't Cupra, Seat, VW or Audi taking too long to remedy the issues with the same Infotainment units in their vehicles around the world. There's a hell of a lot more models than just the Skoda Octavia around the world that have had their reputations damaged by the whole issue.
  3. The fact that it was a VAG-wide issue still doesn't excuse the problems people faced. When someone pays £25,000+ for a new car and feels that they are Beta testers for badly implemented software, which is the centre of modern cars, that has multiple issues an apology, after the event, doesn't mean that much? Reading through the forums the frustration experienced by people going back to dealers time after time seeking a fix and none being available due to the inordinate amount of time it took VAG to get a stable version released leads to a very poor customer experience. It undoubtedly damages customer confidence and hurts brand reputation. It's all pretty stable now and luckily I bought my Octavia last year so escaped the worst of it, although I had to actively get the software and firmware updated to get a stable system. I love my Octavia but the damage to the Mk4 Ocvtavia reputation had already been done for many long-term Skoda customers.
  4. Just a little update. Bought one of the steel wheels that Carlston put me onto (links above).. Was a little unsure about what size tyre to put on after reading that space is a bit limited in the wheel well, But went with a 205/60R16 tyre and it fits perfectly. Thanks to everyone who helped me out..
  5. You can buy brake fluid testers for 4 or 5 quid these days so easy to do yourself
  6. Sold my MK3 a few months back, will most probably be my last Skoda, nothing in the current range makes me think oooh I want of them. Originally had a 2002 MK1 VRS which I had for 12 years. My 2019 MK3.5 I kept for 18 months. On comparing the two variants to me they both have their good and bad points. I kept my MK1 standard for around 3 years, then found this site and the mods started, MK3 was left standard, mods were planned but the itch to get a V8 won so the VRS went and in came Jag XFR. So on to comparing the VRS's. MK3 has the better chassis handles better than MK1, ride quality the same. MK3 definitely has the better seats, much more support and a lot easier to keep clean along with the carpets, who thought white/silver seats and carpet in a family car was a good idea I'll never know. MK1 has the better steering wheel to the touch, MK3 feels to plasticky, design is on a par. Some of the interior plastics on the MK3 seemed a bit more scratchy and hard compared to the MK1. MK3 has the better spec all round. MK3 why are the front window switches hidden behind the door handle?? I opened the rears nearly as much as the fronts. MK1 opening the boot in the rain resulted in water in the boot, nice to see they cured it for the MK3. Both have great boot space. The engines, 2.0TSi and 1.8T 20V, newer engine the better performance wise, both very tunable, and both have decent reliability if properly maintained. Think my biggest gripe with the 2.0 TSi is how many parts under the bonnet are now plastic, and we all know how plastic copes with numerous heat cycles, think I'd of been waiting for something to split once things get hot after a few years of use. MK3 headlamps loads better than the candles on the MK1. Fuel economy on a run was good on both models, I regularly got mid 40's, and insurance was was good compered to some of it's rivals. Both good looking cars, MK1 wins this one for me just looked better compared to lower spec models, where as the MK3 doesn't look different enough to the rest of the range. never bothered with the MK2 or MK2 FL, didn't like the back end and the Dame Edna glasses on the FL. The MK4 leaves me cold, looks like a bad copy BMW 3 series. So which do I think is the better of the two? For me it's the MK1, it's a close call, the MK1 just seems to have a character to it where the the MK3 feels a little to clinical. Both cars based on Golf GTi, the MK1 to me felt on a par to the MK4 GTi, where as the MK3 feels cheaper than GTi's now, VAG management definitely put a gap between Audi, VW, and Skoda, Seat taking up the cheap end. Another to way to look at it also is when you park your car, do you look back at your car and think that's mine, I did with the MK1 all the time, the MK3 not so much. Anyway that's my thoughts and opinion, let the agreements and disagreements start🤣🤣

Yeah, but it’s a Frankinperb, Colin, so it don’t count…😂
  9. I have just had a character building experience with my Polo 1.4 16V Auto with a petrol BKY engine, I know it is not a Skoda but is a close cousin and I’ve found this forum handy in the past. (So I write Seat / Skoda / VW in the text to enable a search to catch this). I am posting it as it may help someone else and to make it searchable so others may be helped. Situation is that it was being used and just would not start, not a specially cold day. It has done this twice before and mysteriously springs back into life. This time it took 2.5 weeks to get going this time. This is what happened. I know that to get an engine going you need : spark + fuel + cam timing + etc. 1. When I sprayed Easy Start down the throttle body it did not start. As Easy Start replaces the petrol this ruled out a fuel issue. 2. The cam timing was easily checked by pulling off the cam cover and observing the movement of the cams and their markings whilst a long screwdriver was being pushed up and down by poking it down a spark plug hole (which on this engine is vertically above and inline with the piston stroke). I used a spanner on the big cam wheel nut to turn the engine gently. 3. I pulled a coil out and put a spark plug in the end, then using a large crocodile clip grounded the thread of the spark plug. When I cranked the engine there was a yellow/orange spark. An internet evening told me that yellow/orange is a weak spark which can be quenched by fuel and a blue spark is required. So I’m loosing voltage somewhere. 4. I got 4 second hand coils. Put them in – no difference. 5. Cleaned all the earthing points that I could find, there are a few. – no difference. 6. I tested a coil on the engine as before – no spark at all. 7. I figured out the coil wiring on the car (which is not like I found on the internet) There are 4 wires. Starting at the square end of the connector a. Brown – Ground b. Brown / Yellow – Gound locally on the cam cover. c. Purple – Ignition permanent positive. d. Thin coloured wire – Pulse from the ECU to trigger the coil and hence the spark. 8. I tested a coil pack on the bench by connecting the first 3 wires to a battery, grounding the spark plug using the croc clip. When I dabbed the pulse wire onto the battery a nice blue spark. So at least one coil is good. 9. Then I changed all sorts thinking the ECU was not working or getting a signal from a sensor. 10. I had observed on VCDS that the crank speed was about 200 RPM using the crank sensor. 11. Finally the battery was charged for many hours and after cranking and then full throttle and cranking (which stops fuel injection and thus dries the engine a little) it spluttered into life and has not looked back. 12. CONCLUSION – THE BATTERY WAS LOW. It now cranks a lot quicker and starts easily. I hope that this helps someone as there are a lot of cranking and no start posts out there. RRegards, John
  10. Yes the Brake Fluid heats and cools and H2o might well be absorbed at the calipers, brake hoses, but since the brake fluid is hygroscopic you are as well seeing what H2o content there is at the reservoir. Funnily till 2010 or so it was Brake Fluid first @ 2 years then each 2 years. Then that became @ 3 years then each 2, now we are back to @ 2 years and each 2. All about playing safe with VW Group, or is it easy money / income for dealerships. It is at least bit more towards Servicing & Maintenance than those that say ' have never changed brake fluid ever on any car'. Probably never killed them selves going off a coastal road either or had brake fade doing track days or anything like that.
  11. New Download Links: I have uploaded the file to a couple of my cloud services, and no password is required. Give them a try and let me know if they are working okay for you. The first link will likely become unavailable when it hits a bandwidth limit so best to download ASAP. https://e.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZVfN9Zh62r0cJ7y4YQMaldlQMJxbP78tTV Hopefully this link should work okay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rT0eItntrx6zeUz0dMAnzpBKL5Ktswg7/view?usp=share_link If requests become to much I will likely have to restrict downloads but for the time being I'll keep them live and un-restricted.
  12. I take it they are XL,s. Well the Low Profile tyres and the pressure you run is what it is. As it is buying only 3 tyres and keeping 1 does not make sense. You might get a deal on 4 anyway, better than a pair and a single. The Dunlops are not as hard as Pirelli Zero,s. ? Why not get 4 All Season tyres fitted. Maybe now as winter is almost over the prices might be sensible. (Winter conditions not over here though at near freezing and potential of snow on high routes.)
  13. If it's glazed patches, which you should be able to spot after taking the wheel off, I've had that in the past and have been able to clear it by sanding them slightly with some rough wet and dry on a sanding block. Out of gear you can put a wheel stud back in and spin the disk using the wheel brace while holding the sanding block against the disc.

I add myself also here ... car is brilliant. Made a round-trip of south east europe of 3200km only two days after getting the car delivered and I actually started learning the ropes as I went 🙂 And fairly economical as well, returned an average of 12/13 km/lt (say, 7 to 8 l/100km), considering not exactly economy run speeds ... There is still loads more to go .. but so far all good. I was shocked and horrified to learn it had its first 'service' done at 30K km ... modern engines oh well. I booked it for a check regardless, while I need to select a 'new' VCDS from Gendan, mine which I got from them 10 years ago became outdated (like most things, alas, I am still struggling without CDs 🤪). Will continue reading and reading ....
  16. After seeing so many people doing it the wrong way, I decided to make my own video
  17. Well, the dog will only do it the once.
  18. Is it dedication or just plain stubbornness at this point? 🤪
  19. Nice review! I have also noticed, as numbskull correctly mentioned, that tires make a dramatic difference in the noise level, especially in cars where other aspects are well "covered". Being used to 'louder' cars, I seldom noticed this ... now I am almost obsessed 🤭 Mine came with Bridgestones which, besides being huge 19s, seem also at the end of their life with almost 40k km and ~3yrs., and they are quite present at speed. For now they will do, but for their replacement will look carefully at the noise level. I am actually inclined to 'downsize' as well.
  20. I'm happy with the general volume level in the Superb. Could summarize, maybe.....bear in mind that nowadays, I do 400km at a time, 1 way, to the office. Same day return, mostly empty roads. Minimal town work, mostly 80/100/120km/h limits, 80/100 in winter. Summer tyres are Bridgestone Turanza 005s, Winter Hakkapellitta 8s. Both in 215/55R17. Car spec includes heated seats and wheel, Bi-Xenon, Amundsen, Webasto. I've done a tick over 73500kms in 2.5 years. Average according to Spritmonitor is around 6l/100. Average speeds tend to be high with summer limits, like 100km/h high. Plus: - like the ride. Very comfy. But this car also has the rough road pack (+15mm) - noise-wise, pleasantly quiet, even with winter spikes - manual change not too shabby - winter tyres still have 6mm left; summers still have >5mm left. Both sets were new at the time of buying. - it powerslides beautifully in ESC Sport mode without allowing rotations... but you can still eat snow - the range is lovely, with 1200km no issue and 800 in a day absolutely standard with a 1/3 tank left. Dislikes: - used the heated screen so little it's weird. Webasto very effective, so that got used instead. - bit floaty over the bumpy stuff, would have fixed that with B6s all round - sound system is pants, but I fixed that --> DSP + Amps + Sub. Took some boot space, excellent sound as a result. - Bi-Xenon underwhelming, I fixed that too --> Lazer 18 Elite will also be added to the Kodiaq - Range on the Webasto remote was small. Can't stand on the runway at my local airport and turn the Webasto on reliably. But this is a standard feature of these remotes, so... What broke / was replaced? 1 wheel bearing. 1 lower control arm ball joint 1 set of front disks + pads oil, 3 times Haldex oil, once Adblue system bits, once Battery, once Kessy start button, once Overall: solid 8/10. Can't argue with the tyre wear; it's done a very good job of keeping costs down and eating the miles. Haldex is very nice now the fluid is changed - previously you could tell when power was going to the back, now it's just sliiiiiiide and no apparent movement of power.
  21. VAG Speedos haven't been linear for years. Every VAG i've had since a 2001 Polo GTi (followed by 2xMk1 Fabia vRSs, a Superb II, a Citigo, a Mk3 Fabia and this Mk4 Octy) They've all been physical dials previously and have usually change at the 80mph or 100mph mark though. The only image I have to hand is from the Superb I’ve just got rid of for the Octy…….
  22. Found an even better one. 720bhp 2.5litre 5 cylinder Superb. Have to admit this one is not as subtle but impressive none the less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN7T2_ERG9Y
  23. I wouldn't call my SUperb loud although there is some wind noise noticeable (slightly more so on the front passenger side) but its not that bad
  24. Yes, you have the issue likely that is pinned at the top of the section. Just an other 1.8 TSI worn out. Was that oil changes at every 5,000 km? A bit much.
  25. You could just temporarily disable WiFi on the car or your phone. You should then be able to connect via a USB cable.
  26. Have you tried connecting with a cable in the Octavia? What the car displays within CarPlay is determined by the software in the car infotainment system. It could be that some of the apps are no longer permitted (perhaps something like YouTube video) hence the Octavia doesn't show them whereas the older Fabia does. If all else fails, try posting on the Apple support community pages - https://discussions.apple.com/welcome You'll probably need to sign in with your Apple ID.
  27. I've just ordered a brake fluid tester from Amazon which will be here tomorrow. I'll have a look at the size of the flap in the tyre and then decide on what to do.
  28. If a flap of tyre was to get glued down then Black Bostik has been the Kerb Side Auto way, or vulcanising glue. Puncture repair glue. both surfaces left to dry almost. then put together. Bodging R'us!
  29. Good that some what they see. There needs to be more professionals keeping the rest of us safe. Lots have cars and if the Tech / Fitter servicing does not tell the driver stuff then who will? Plenty owners have Used cars and no idea what was done and when like Brake Fluid changed.
  30. New one order and the socket for it thanks for the help

@Spike21 click on link in my signature, most popular questions already have been answered @Penpusher each "new" release contains at least half year old files in it 😞 personally me prefer Waze for daily routes and Google Maps for abroad trips

Yeah... I think it's Amazon's silly pricing algorithms gone mad - probably lack of supply pushing the price up as there is a new version: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-BoostCharge-Wireless-Charging-Compatible-Black-dp-B09F8RLBQY/dp/B09GRJ2S8X/ref=dp_ob_title_ce?th=1 Edit: or the non-powered version: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-MagSafe-Magnetic-Holder-iPhone/dp/B095Y6M8J2
  33. If you want wind deflectors then that is easy. Taking the decals off the side would be the first thing i would do. & change the wheel colour to a Dark Grey Metallic.
  34. Welcome. The car looks good already. Is the engine and suspension standard now as it stands, not remapped, upgraded or modded air intake, suspension or anything else?
  35. I'll scan mine and check in the next day or two.
  36. I would be surprised if bleeding the brakes would cure the problem, usually brakes need bleeding because the brake pedal is spongey .
  37. What guide are you following? Pretty sure in a MK2 cornering fogs are part of the lcode and not an adaptation channel... Can you post an auto scan and adaption map from 09?
  38. Finally fitted the rears! Undoing the Triplesquare bolts holding the caliper bracket on was not going to happen without removing the shock absorber, which was easy enough to remove and allowed a decent breaker bar or similar to then fit under the arch and be used without spatial issues. It was very easy to replace them both and all fitted very well.
  39. If it has a DSG gearbox, ignore the Skoda service schedule which states that neither the transmission or the Mechatronic oils need never to be changed, it most certainly does!! My transmission & Mech oils were changed for the first time @ 175,000 miles. The transmission oil looked surprisingly good however the mech oil looked like rancid brown sludge rather than bright green which it should be.
  40. My impression is that the options list is overall a bit thinner than it was at the end of the non-FL Mk4 versions. Maybe more options will reappear once they have been in production for a while?
  41. 1 point
True enough, but Skoda have not redressed the issue properly and many of us have been fobbed off. I know this forum is dedicated to Skoda, but my membership will cease when I get rid of the Karoq and get a Sportage (Highly recommended by a friend) or a Duster with rather less sophisticated electronics.
  42. Happy to report that the door sealing worked flawlessly, replaced all the fixings with new ones, going to do the other side while the weather is nice, a bit of preventative maintenance. My daughter sent me an early (2 years in fact) 50th birthday present, it matches her number plate and my sons too… 😍 I would never buy a personal number plate, so it was a nice surprise, I put some LED number plate lights in at the same time. 43. I'm inclined to say that the owner was partly at fault, tor taking a decent car to Halfrauds for service!
  44. I thought I'd share my experience with an Australian/RoW MIB3/MOI3 unit. From factory the radio station logos are disabled and I don't believe Australia is included in the database or ever has been. By default, radio database just displays as blank, but changing function_configuration_radio-Station_Logo_DB_Mode setting in 5F gets the radio database version to display and allows you to apply the update via USB as described in the original post. This can be done using OBDeleven or similar. You can find more information on this setting in this Ross Tech forum thread. My hope was that this file might also contain Gracenote information which could provide cover art for music played on radio stations. 5F has options for local and online Gracenote cover art. However, as I'm in a region without Skoda Connect (nor the hardware) I'd need a local Gracenotes database update - although I'm not sure one exists. Does anyone know if there is a Gracenote database update package? They existed for Audi models previously.
  45. This is in km/h. Never bothered me. Why would this be an issue?

Just thought I would share my opinions, after the first month, of my Fabia MkIV SE Comfort 1.0 TSI 110PS DSG. The main reason for a share is having just returned from its first real test, a weekend trip to Scotland and back visiting family. My first few weeks have been just tootling around town with only a couple of slightly longer journeys but never enough to properly get things tested out. It has been more like a period of feeling my way around the car and getting used to the different elements. This weekend, however, has been a really good test. 260 mile round trip between home (just south of Newcastle) and Edinburgh. Tyne Tunnel / A19 / A1 all the way giving a decent combination of 60 and 70 mph roads under varying conditions. Outward journey early Saturday morning saw pretty uncomfortable rainy weather the majority of the way there with not too bad traffic conditions and a full load. Quite impressed by 52 MPG on the trip computer. I know there is always comment about the inaccuracies of these things but, to my mind, it gives a general guide and if that is all that is used it is always compared to its own previous readings, so suits me. The return journey early this morning had a slightly lighter load and not so much bad weather but had a couple of lengthy sections stuck at 50 behind HGV traffic. This really seemed to push the economy giving me a very healthy 57.6 MPG. I also noticed quite a number of decent stretches of 'coasting' which would have helped this figure, I guess. The real bonus features I found were with the actual drive quality. That wee 1.0 engine just purred along and never felt under-powered. Combined with the silky smoothness of the DSG gearbox and the general suspension, road noise level and overall comfort of the ride made this car a joy to drive. Even my good lady wife was happy and she hates travelling. She has always been extremely prone to travel sickness, which was one of the reasons for going to the DSG box, but this trip had her rather happy we had made this choice! Overall I felt that this small car felt like it was bigger, more powerful and more 'upmarket' than it should. One month and 600 miles in and I'm a happy Fabia-ist.
  47. The sensor lead is a small plug-in tag attached to the negative battery terminal.
  48. Wow. Mine had a software update last month, but has always been good. Here's today Bristol to Leeds 197 miles 4.3 mi/kWh.
