All this discussion on rumours, beliefs, hearsay, etc just goes to show that Skoda (VW group) have badly let down their customers by an astounding lack of formal, detailed information. Most modern mul

OK,thx for fast replay :-)

Already has radio text on 4120 so no need to upgrade for that and risk bricking the thing. In reality there's very little difference between the firmwares that I often wonder why people upgrade with butchered firmwares downloaded from the web because newer is better.

+1, there is a step change in functionality when moving to from very early firmware to 3 series or beyond, but nothing much in it after that. Also there are some older units that shouldn't be updated beyond 4020 for fear of radio board damage (not that I am saying that is the case in the particular example above).

Thats why Im also looking only to update maps to the latest V12...

Yep in your case definitely just stick to map upgrades.

Quick one, just helped put a columbus in another members car and have a question about the best firmware for it. Can't remember the exact details but I know it had no letter suffix on the unit and it's from 2008/2009.

VCDS says the following:

Part No SW: 3T0 035 680 A    HW: 3T0 035 680
Component: RNS-MID       H11 2854
Coding: 020004000001000200

I believe this is already a modified firmware and has 7 digit postcodes. To avoid any battery drain issues I've also swapped the can gateway from a 1K0 907 530 F to 7N0 907 530 H as I had one laying about.

There are three issues we have encountered so far:
- MFSW buttons don't work
- CD playback from the 6 CD changer is distorted
- No GPS lock yet

This is in a 55 plate L&K so there is a factory fit maxidot and MFSW we would like to get it to work with, I have a full autoscan if we need other part numbers.

So whats the highest firmware version it can take with the MFSW buttons working and ideally output to the maxidot? I've read somewhere about needing to switch a couple of files on the CD to fix the MFSW?

Thanks,

4020 for early European units on www.rnsfirmware.com.

And then if mfsw or maxidot is a bit iffy there is a fix here on my-gti.com for that but the site seems down at moment, so can't post a link. Its called sk-4020-fix or similar.

Perfect, I'll download those now and give it a bash tomorrow with any luck. Found the sk_4020_fix.rar too...

Do I need to jump to a 3xxx firmware or should I be able to go from 2xxx to 4020 directly?

Finally, I know the maps will be lost during the update, what are the latest one the 4020 firmware will accept. V9 look a good option but there are mentions of V10 assuming it's flashed with the partitions correctly sized.

Coding: 020004000001000200

Does it have Sound System installed, as L&K usually does?

Here is mine coding with sound system:

04060042000000811000

I don't believe it does, as the sound is working perfectly (apart from the cd changer).

I ended up in this thread after a search and hadn't released I was in the superb subforum, so it's actually fitted in a octavia.

Why would anyone spend £600 on a Skoda unit when £600 buy's aftermarket units that are ten times better and now look OEM as well to varying degrees, Sony units are fantastic.

Each to their own, and I can understand both viewpoints, but there is certainly something to be said for full OEM integration of the SKoda units and the knowledge you get regarding the potential issues from this forum.  Plus its probably easier with some insurance companies given many won't cover much more than £250-£500 of aftermarket equipment.

Thanks adamal, 4020 happily flashed and all three issues are now understood or fixed.

Turns out the CD changer distortion is partly due to pins changing (CD ground moved from 2 to 3) and the rear right speaker being knacked.

Second flash (4020_sk_fix) sorted the MFSW.

GPS figured itself out after spinning the car round.

Happy days.

That's correct have read that about older CD changers. The pins can be swapped around I believe to improve things.

Yeah we've done that and I think it would be fine apart from the duff speaker!

New owner of a Columbus, It was in my new superb elegance. The dealer had to fit a brand new unit yesterday as the original unit failed completely.

When I set a destination I can only use 4 digit postcodes. How do I access the 'secret' menu I have read about? Also how do I find which version of firmware and maps I have.

Cheers

Ray

That doesn't sound right - a new Columbus would have later firmware with 7 digit sesrching. Secret menu is press and hold setup for 20 secs, beyond the AM FM etc menu to a fuller list of selections.

Thanks, i'll check it out tomorrow

Under the secret menu there should be four digit sw and map codes. The map code begins with a 7 or 8.

You might not need to go as far as the secret menu as the newer Columbus' have the firmware & map version alongside the radio test menu.

Hopefully I found the correct information.

the Part Number is 3T0 035 686 N,

HW version is H27

SW version is 6276

Map supplier Navteq

Map Version HDD 8195

Can anyone please tell me what I have and what I need to be getting the dealer to do please?

Cheers

Ray
