Columbus firmware upgrade

Featured Replies

The absolute latest possible by the looks of it, so it is a brand new Columbus (and DAB enabled, so result there).  It should allow seven digit searching - are you sure you are typing it in correctly as I have never heard of a four digit only searching issue you referred to (just a five digit issue).

Ever since I did the 4020 update on my early Columbus , its been randomly rebooting , some times it goes for weeks between reboots , other times it does it two or three times a day

If all else fails then read the instructions :D Thankk you to everyone who has commented and helped me out big style. You were spot on Adam, it does do 7 digit postcodes

How early?

If there's no letter suffix to the part number, did you use the firmware that was modified for older units?

Yes I used the right firmware, not too bothered about it though as it reboots automatically and the car is being traded soon anyhow

  • 4 weeks later...

I have columbus

3T0 035 680

HW H11

SW 1164

i have done firmware update (i think was 4020) every thing working fine but POI are gone

how i can get POI back?

Edited by majkelo

SW1164 utilised 2 partitions (maps & POI's was one, music the other).

Newer firmware used three partitions (POI's, maps, music) and a different format of POI.

Upgrading has wiped them with no way of recovering them. Sorry.

An excellent and useful thread.

Gents and ladies - I have searched for this but still not too sure...bear with little brain me.

I want to check my Columbus stats and see what firmware/maps/version I have. To access my setup menu on my Columbus (March 2010 with power amp upgrade, cd changer in boot and TV tuner all fitted from new) I can either:

Hold setup to bypass the radio setup screen (does not work - gets stuck at AM/FM screen)

Hold simultaneously the arrow and mic buttons (does not work)

Remove facia surround, 4 screws and slide out unit to check (simple enough but a last resort).

There is coding on my amp under the passenger seat...does that have relevance to the Columbus unit?

Is that about it? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Dave

You will need to enable the hidden menu via VCDS if holding the setup button doesn't work. Once enabled just hold the setup button and it'll appear after the am/fm menu. ;)

Thank you WD - will try to find a friendly VAG dealer or get a cable off Fleabay.

So there is no any option to new firmware(4120) or maybe new map?

There is an option for both.

You'll first need a modified firmware for older units: either 3810 or 4020 (there's not much in it).

Search this forum or Google for links.

Then a newer map disc. v.12 is the latest available from VW, Skoda are stuck on v.11.

Map 8195 is the V12, isn't it?

Thats what i have installed, last week.

Correct

I have V12 maps that I want to install.  Can this be done via SD or do I have to burn to a DL DVD?

Thanks,

It can be done from SD but still requires burning a disc but the maps are actually copied from the SD and not the disc.

This was the only way I could get them to copy in the end.

Thanks for all the great advice on here!

I do not know what firmware I currently have (hidden menu remains hidden and I dont have access to VCDS in Northern Ireland) however my system is currently running V10 with 7 digit postcode. The car is 2011.

From this information is it possible to advise:

a)  Am I likely to have to update the firmware to run V12 maps?

and

B) If so, am I likely to need firmware (eg 4020) for an earlier version - which I have seen reference to further up-thread?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

V12 maps will go onto any firmware so whatever you have will not need updating. Your firmware will be above 2*** if you have 7 digit postcode search.

Thanks very much for such a fast and helpful reply Rusty!

One further question then - will I be able to install POIs if I dont upgrade the firmware?  I had read that the newer maps needed a 3-partition hard drive and I assume mine will still be 2-partition?

Thanks, Hashi

If you are on V.10 maps your firmware already supports 3 partitions and will retain POI functionality (although you may lose any current ones.

If you can get v.12 maps, just stick the disc in.

Not strictly true. If someone has updated the maps but not the firmware then it could still be on 2 partitions.

But would that mean that they don't have POI's as they are located in the wrong place and in the wrong format?

POI's are not available due to the hard drive partitions, but the maps themselves will be okay.

I upgraded to a Columbus from a Bolereo which came with the lastest firmware and V11 maps, but also a lot of POIs loaded into it which I'd rather not loose.

Is there anyway to backup POIs already installed on a Columbus, or would I just have to take the chance that a v12 upgrade wipes the POIs?

If you just upgrade the maps you won't lose the POI's as they're on a different hard drive partition. However, there's no way to back them up in any event I'm afraid.
