First time I'll ever sit in it will be for the qualifying session on Sunday morning at 9am.

 

Looked at last years results and best 1700cc Puma time was 2.26 at Snetterton.  23rd in qualifying.

So I'd like to do a fair bit better than that as it's about 10 seconds off Danny's test time in the Focus!

Although to be fair that is well set up and has about 70bhp more.

On first look I'm thinking, "Christ he needs to sort that arch gap!", then I spotted the obvious. Sometimes my own stupidity knows no bounds.

Snetterton Report.

Saturday 9th April.

Swinging 60s CSCC race.

Lotus Elan.

 

 

An interesting day.

Came out with a car very well set up, weather was damp and raining and track conditions were very slippery.

Managed to put two decent laps in, both in 2.45 area.  Rest were several seconds slower..

Surprisingly, this put me on pole position for the race.  But a lot of people were struggling so feeling they couldn't improve and so didn't drive the full 30 minute session.

 

A rather daunting thing as it was my first race start and meant I would have to control the pace on in the rolling start.

 

Qualifying times.

 

 

So on to the main race.

Me and the 3.0 Capri on the front row, he kept edging forwards despite the fact I thought I was supposed to be setting the pace and was told not to go over 60kph...

Anyway we did go over a little bit as I was trying to keep up with him.

 

Lights out and off we went!

I managed to stay alongside him to the first corner where I was on the inside and there was a fair amount of standing water.

Then I completely binned it, tried to hold the Capri off the apex I went in a bit too fast for the conditions, back end came round and I went off pretty quickly across the grass, ending up about 1m from where they'd stopped cutting it.

Looked like a field of cabbages beyond that, felt like I was around 30-40m from the track.

First race start, binned it on the first corner...

 

Edged gently back to the track in order not to dig the wheels in and get stuck, as I returned to the black stuff everyone else had cleared the next two corners so I was last.

Quite simply nothing to lose now, so off I went.

Started to catch the back markers quite quickly, overtaking several.

Rain started to come down harder, quite a few cars started going off.

Then I ended up backwards just past the bridge, slid over the grass and back onto the track pointing the right way so just carried on.

Passed about four cars on the same corner, over a few laps.

 

Then saw the pit board and came in.

As I came out the Safety Car boards were out, but it wasn't in sight, so I went round and after about three quarters of a lap got onto the back of the queue.

Looked like I was about 12 cars back but I suspect some of those had not pitted.

 

Race continued, conditions getting worse and the track very treacherous.

Even a few of the front running cars were starting to come off now, I saw the Capri have a moment in front of me resulting in a detour on the grass for him.

By this time I had no idea what lap we were on, so just kept trying to be as smooth as possible.

Overtook another two cars and then saw the checkered flag, and the pit team holding up the board with 2nd on it .  I was pretty pleased after my major off at the start.

Came in parked up, got interviewed by the announcer and headed off back to the team.

 

 

At the awards later on I got a little something for first in class, that being the Lotus class.

I'm in a Ford Puma I bought on eBay and haven't actually sat in yet...  first time I do will be to start qualifying.

It's in a lower class due to the smaller engine, it can't really compete against the 2.0 cars but hoping to get into the top half of the field.

If the eBay special lasts the day.

 

Danny is in the Focus for his first ever qualifying.

Few of us going up there so will be a nice day.

 

Got some serious editing with the Elan video as when I came off there was quite a bit of swearing.

In fact I think the those were the only words I used...

Will pop it up in a few days.

Well done fella. I'll be honest I completely forgot about the elan, looked at the races and thought no one was racing till Sunday and I am working so never thought to have a gander. The track pushes the events quite well through Facebook and the like too. Shame they don't have webcam feeds from around the track on these days.

Sunday 10th APril.

Great to head up to the track today and see that the weather looked good after yesterday's challenging conditions.

Plus I had no wets for the Puma...

Cool, but dry and sunny.

Damp, but drying quickly.  Just wet in the pits from yesterday.

 

 

A bit of last minute action to get the car past scruitineering, two missing stickers on one and a missing securing bolt on a battery box on another.

Then off to qualifying!

 

Having not been in the Puma before I set off and started to build up the pace.

Was no point going nuts right away as we were the first session and a few damp patches were quickly clearing.

My goal was to get the Puma into the top 16, which is usually the top half of the grid.  Being a 1700cc engine car it's in a lower class than most of the top ten cars, and a fair number of others all down the grid that are 2000cc.

 

Got about half way through the session, had it in 11th and then all the electrics just went.  Dead as a dodo.

Coasted to a save place off line, parked on the grass and awaiting recovery when the session finished.

With people going quicker I ended up in 17th, a little lower down than I'd have liked ideally.

 

Danny was going well, putting in some good times and upping the pace over the session, then about 10 minutes before the end started to get a misfire so brought the car in.

Placed 7th.  Great job first race ever.

 

Issue with the Puma was cable to altenator coming off as it had been soldered rather than crimped, touching something and shorting the whole car out.

Fortunately found and fixed within an hour or so.

 

 

So rolling start for the race, Danny in 7th and me in 17th.

Was expecting the first two corners to be fun, surrounded by other cars.

 

Danny went off like the clappers, passed two cars in the first few corners and then moved to 4th overall.

Had a battle with another car, swapping places and fighting for 3rd.  Then unfortunately suffered a fuel pressure issue on lap 6 and was forced to retire, leaving it parked off the line in a safe place.

A real shame as he was going well, but showed a lot of pace!

 

Meanwhile the Puma I got on eBay was outclassed by the 2000cc cars around it.

On the rolling start I lost two places on the straight into the first corner despite going as quickly as I could, putting me in 19th.

With the cars bunched up I couldn't use the Puma's lighter weight to late brake into the corners as there was nowhere to go meaning I was having to brake a bit early rather than ram someone up the rear end.

 

By the end of the first lap the traffic was spreading out.  I started to use the Puma's good late braking and balance to make ground on the cars directly ahead.

Caught and passed three or four by overtaking into and during corners, then tried to hold them off on the following straights.

Then headed in for my pitstop.

 

Good quick pitstop by the team and back out.  Passed a few cars on the stop.

We pitted early so I was back a little further down the grid, I overtook a few more cars and watched others peel off into the pits.

By half way through the session I was up to 9th.  Amazed the Puma hadn't had a moment and was doing so well.

 

Then the 2000cc cars started to catch up that we passed in the pits.

I had a fight over several laps with a Pug 206 and a Fiesta ST, the latter of which I was within a car length of for about two whole laps or more.

They both managed to get past, while I could get them under braking and through the corners the two long straights at Snetterton were ideal for the bigger engine cars to pass slower ones.

I'd hold them off, outbrake them to open up a gap, only to see them make back that and more on the following long straight.

Then someone came off, leaving me running 10th about a lap and half before the end.

 

Then I had a moment, a huge slide followed by a spin onto the grass, but I got it facing the right way and back on track as quickly as I could.

There was just over a lap to go.  I hadn't lost any places in the off.

 

On the last lap a familiar looking Puma started to gain on me, one that runs in a different class with a hightly tuned 1.6 Duratec making  suspected 200bhp+ that regularly finishes in the top 10.

It was catching me bit by bit.

Just tried to get my lines spot on and late brake for every corner, just managed to hold it off and went past the finish flag in 10th with the other Puma about 3m off my back bumper.

 

 

Very hard work but pleased I got the Puma into the top 10.  I don't think it had anymore to give.

 

Definitely one of my better eBay purchases.

Fantastic chaps, well done. Unlucky for Danny though, but these things are to be expected I suppose. Everyone will breakdown with something during the season. Hope he enjoyed it otherwise though. Go Puma!

Those were the best 6 laps of my life!

Started the day with no power steering. Made the car a bit harder to drive but still no less fun. You had to work harder for it.

Rolling start, 5k RPM 2nd gear and waiting for the lights to go out. Pin the pedal to the floor, up into 3rd and the first corner is approaching. Turn hard (with no power steering and a properly aggressive diff) and give it the beans!

Now this is racing!!!!

I gave one of the Peugeots Hondas and a BMW a good run, although I kept swapping places with the BMW as he could just out brake me in every corner, but I had more speed on the exit and a bit more grunt.

Then comes the fuel pressure issue. Screen said 38psi then dropped to 20psi and at that point it wouldn't run, so I pulled off the track and stopped at a marshalls post. Yes it's a bit gutting but that's racing. Unpredictable, expensive, thrilling and addictive sport that we all love.

I can't wait to get out there again.

I did say to Richard the Puma needs a 'Brisky Racing eBay special' sticker on it. The eBay special was going very well for a unknown car, sounds good too from the marshalls post...

Bring on Silverstone!

Bit gutted for the guys on the team, Gee and Rob. They was looking forward to the pit stop. Fastest time for that in a practice run was 31 seconds. Anything under 45 is a good stop.

It was a great day. Danny was unfortunate to develop a problem during the race that caused a DNF but as said above that is racing. When you want to be top every last bit of power and reliability has to be wrestled from the car sometimes things will go wrong. The misfire was cured and a cramped refuelling acheived, LOL Gee and Rob. Let alone the comical nature of Danny trying to get out and Rob and Gee copping a feel as they were trying to get him back in and away again.

 

Richard and the Puma did really well and getting a second in class against a awesome BMW that was going very well is amazing.

 

So kudos all round gentleman and onto Silverstone next.
