Today's press release from VW...

  • New vehicles with EU6 engines currently available not affected
  • All petrol models, as well as V6 TDI and V8 TDI models, unaffected
  • Technical solutions being developed andwill be presented to responsible authorities before end of October

Milton Keynes, September 30,2015 – Volkswagen  Group UK is announcing its action plan to correct the emissions characteristics of certain diesel vehicles.

In the coming days, the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) details of affected cars will be released to retailers. In addition, a self-serve process for customers to check if their vehicle is affected will be set up.

Step by step, affected customers will be contacted, with details of a process to get their vehicles corrected in the near future. In the meantime, all vehicles are technically safe and roadworthy.

Under the action plan, the Volkswagen Group brands whose vehicles are affected will present the technical solutions and measures to relevant responsible authorities in October.

Customers with these vehicles will be kept informed over the coming weeks and months. All of the Group brands affected will set up national websites to update customers on developments.

The specific numbers of vehicles in the UK affected per brand are as follows:
Volkswagen Passenger Cars – 508,276
Audi – 393,450
SEAT – 76,773
ŠKODA – 131,569
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles – 79,838

Volkswagen Group UK is committed to supporting its customers and its retailers through the coming weeks.

Well, including NI and the Channel Islands there are 110 Skoda dealers in the UK.

That gives them on average (in round figures) 1,200 affected cars each to be "corrected"

Busy times ahead

Is there a thread yet for the first Briskodian to get the recall notice?

Hopefully if an Owner opts to have the Volkswagen Groups Fix once they know what they are,

that owner will be allowed to use the Volkswagen UK Official Dealership Network and get conformation

a Trained & Qualified Technician will carry out the work and any tests.

ie, a Skoda can go to a VW, Audi, Seat or Porsche Dealership.

Simply because as it is, some Dealerships number of Qualified Technicians, or even competent to do ECU Alterations are limited.

Some can not Reset a Service Indicator, or the One Press to open doors.

VW UK & the VW Group need to get a Recrutement & Training Scheme underway.

& sub Contract work to Independents with Qualified Technicians and Mechanics.

...................

Maybe someone forgot to tell the Volkswagen Board and Senior Executives the poor standard of Workshops

for doing the most basic of jobs, and poor customer satisfaction even though they are always winning awards.

That is just some of the Franchised Dealerships in the UK obviously that are incompetent.

...............................

& No Surcharging by Dealerships for Courtesy Car insurance etc either.

VW best get those cars sitting in Compounds Unsold Registered and available to get out to Customers

that may be inconvenienced while the VWG are sorting out their cheating and dishonesty.

... He repeatedly said I shouldn't believe everything I read it the Daily Mail (dear!) ...

Please complain in writing to the Dealership and/or Skoda UK, that bit in brackets isn't OK, you are rightfully indignant. He needs re-training.

If/when I receive the recall notice and I decide to let them do it I assume that I would needs my hids recoded?

Seems we are getting closer to what will actually happen. Some cars will have the cheat software and it will be 'active'. Some cars will have the cheat software but it will be dormant.

The main point here is this. What effect will the new software have on MPG and Performance? It is a known fact, that the cheat software makes the car meet emission regulations while under test. That means aggressive EGR use and increased Adblue use (if Adblue used.)

If the new software were simply the test mode switched on all the time, performance is going to take a big hit, MPG will be worse, and the emission equipment is going to clog up quicker (simple physics) The more stuff you capture in CATS the harder the CAT has to work.

On a more technical note, I cannot see how VW can rectify this with a new style map that still gives quoted performance and MPG and also meet emissions. If that was possible, there would have been no need to add the cheat code in the first place.

My Octavia Mk 3 VRS used EA288 CUDA engine, which as far as I can tell is not affected. If it is, and if the performance is down and MPG worse, I know what I am going to say to my dealer. "Get me the petrol version of this car, in same spec, and we will do a simple vehicle swap. Or take my old car back , and give me a full price refund, as the car was sold under false pretences.

Very accurate analysis there, I think, MoggyTech. Which is why it's going to have to be more than just software revision, IMHO.

VW need to move things as quick as humanly possible, as Glass's apparently say the value of secondhand VW diesels has effectively taken a 2.8% drop this month compared to the market as a whole.

Suzuki reacted pretty quickly when 2 test cars suffered complete brake failure testing by magazines (a much smaller number of cars of course), Ford sold a Pinto for several years knowing it had a design defect that could cause the passengers to be sprayed with petrol and burnt alive in a rear-end accident. They figured the cost of re-engineering was greater than paying out to the occasional victim. They had to re-engineer 1.5 million cars in the end and yet people still trust Ford. Toyota and Nissan recalled around 6.5 million cars over airbag issues and yet that seems to be forgotten about already.

People like VW and consumerism always wins these days, so I suspect this is nothing more than a very expensive blip on the VW onslaught to world domination. Give it a couple of years...........

132,000 skoda vehicles involved ! And 500,000 vw , 80,000seats and Audi is 400,000

I agree entirely.

If it was as simple as a software change that has no effect on driving performance then there would have been no need to cheat in the first place.

I note that their official announcement says that it's just the EA189 types and not the EA288. While some people can be pretty sure they'll have a "problem" to deal with there's quite a few of us with Euro 5 TDI engines in Mk3 Octavias that may or may not be included.

If it is, and if the performance is down and MPG worse, I know what I am going to say to my dealer. "Get me the petrol version of this car, in same spec, and we will do a simple vehicle swap. This seems a fair and reasonable reaction. I was hoping to sell my car ('12 DSG VRS Octavia) in the coming months as I'm getting a BMW via a car lease scheme, but this now appears as if it will be quite the task, especially if MPG/performance take a hit. What's the point in a VRS if its performance is dented to meet the emissions requirement - could honestly see the value of it dropping like a stone. I doubt VAG would let me fall into negative equity but that then ties me in to taking the car back to them at the end of the PCP and not selling privately in a couple of months and clearning the finance myself.

The more I think about the implications, more so in terms of finance, the more I'm bugged by the whole thing.

Software potentially or worse case scenario is adblue technology, I for one will not keep this vw if it's the adblue

I know this may have been asked but how can I tell if I have an EA189 engine in my octavia vrs?

& Suzuki and 2 Cars Brakes.

?

Was that the new car this year about to be delivered to customers in the UK in Right Hand Drive form,

that Motoring Journal roadtesters discovered had a fault, so delivery was halted.?

That gives an idea of how after extensive testing of Left Hand Drive cars, often driven abroad by testers,

they arrive in the UK as Right Hand Drive and turn out the Engineering as a Left Hand Drive has problems as a Right Hand Drive.

Weirder still is the car was built by a right hand drive manufacturer.

Maybe it is possible to do something simply with other software version.Take a look at those performance mappers that manage to increase power and torque with the same fuel consumption. I assume that factory settings have some safety factor included. For example, engine is capable of doing 150 hp but it's limited to 140 hp just to be sure it's working under max. load and it should be fine for a long time.  So, playing with various settings might give the desired result. As EU regulations aren't as strict as US regulations, maybe they can go on with this only.

Maybe not... who knows :)

Long term I think (only my opinion of course) that VW will come out of this OK. They will need to pamper customers, and really bend over backwards to regain trust and move on.

At least no one was killed (directly at least) and loads of manufacturers have had urgent safety recalls that cost lives.

A few years back I was a VW customer, but the dealers attitude drove me away. I love Skoda cars, and my dealer is brilliant, hopefully I can stay with them.

Well if they take my car and just do a cool more power more MPG less emissions re-map, I am going to be one happy bunny  :D

Check the first four letters of your engine code, and check that against the list of engines further up this thread. Pretty sure your car will be EA288 but not 100% If the engine starts CUDA you should be fine.

Qatar Holdings own a big enough share of VW.

(Pity their finances & real wealth are in doubt.)

So maybe VW can just hand out Fuel Cards to the owners of affected cars as a Goodwill Gesture to use while they own the vehicles.

£500 annual spending allowance on fuel for that car should do it.  (Diesel Obviously)

Other Vouchers for some of the many Companies they own and run in the UK so customers can get Discounts.

Bung a few more Billion to the UK Government to pay for NHS Hospitals etc,

& building Jails in Jamaica.  (also to Compensate for the British Empire involvement in Slavery.)

VWG can also Bung some of the Billions towards the HMRC for losses in VED that any Emission Cheating has meant that Treasury Income was

less that the True Emissions should have had the VED bringing in.

Save messing about sorting the Diesels that the EU Governments supposedly wanted off the roads anyway.

George Osborne must be organising the Diesel Scrapage Scheme ready for the Autumn Budget Announcements.

Hi everyone

Apologies if there's already a thread I've missed but I thought this link might be useful to anyone who fears their car will be one of the ones affected by the use of illegal "defeat devices".

Solicitors Leigh Day have a helpful FAQs which I imagine they will keep updated as the picture becomes clearer.

I will certainly be watching with keen interest!

EDIT: Thanks moderator for moving this.
