What bulbs are fitted to the S3 & upgraded bulb recommendations

Featured Replies

Good idea,

But I fear the location is not the mostoptimized one. Once the boot will be loaded, either the items in the boot will act as a reflector (especially if light colored or glossy) and throw you the light back into your face :whew: ; or... they will hide the lights (lot of work for low gain in this case) :speechless:...

I would suggest to implement the light at the same height as the detachable flashlight on the opposite side, to have something somehow symetric.... It will look as an OEM feature. This should also save some wire length I guess... ;)

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this post but as a newbie I didn't want to start a new topic...

I have a 2018 SE Technology which is fitted with the non led daytime running lights and standard halogen headlight bulbs.  I would like to smarten the appearance by fitting the led drl units as fitted to some mk 3 models. Has anybody any experience  / views on this upgrade?  Are the led units fitted with xenon or are they available with halogens?  Any guidance welcome. Thanks

I fear you have to replace the full front light units (for xenon ones) + electric motors to adjust beam height upon boot loading + electric motor for directional beams...:speechless:

Ah..!  Thanks for that info Bap33.  That's what I was afraid of.  Guess I was hoping that Skoda had produced a version with led drls and halogen headlights.  Oh well, back to the drawing board.  As an alternative approach, has anybody replaced the 'standard' drls with led bulbs? Not sure if this would even be road legal...

It's certainly possible but you're correct it won't be road legal although given it's a DRL/sidelight, you might get away with it....

Sounds like it's a bit of an effort to change the DRL too:

Wow..!  Thanks for that langers2k.  That was a really useful thread.  Think I'll leave the drls alone... Looks far too difficult.  If I get desperate, may have to look at some add on leds - have seen some Phillips and Osram ones which would brighten it up. - or maybe I'll just leave it alone and hope for leds on the next one!  Thanks again.

I think you'd be ok replacing the halogen DRL with an LED lamp. Provided it wasn't too bright of course. I think you'd just need to choose wisely; some LEDs just create a small point source of bright light whereas you'd be after a broader spread of light from the lamp housing 👍

Thanks boydee.  Having looked at the thread describing the process of even accessing the drl bulbs, I've decided to leave well alone... Looks far to complex for the potential gain - after all, it's only to make it look nicer..!  Think I'll look at decent headlight bulbs and led fogs as described in this thread - might even get carried away and do the boot lights too...

I had aliexpress led's for the reversing lights, while they looked nice, light output to actually see anything was dreadful. I splashed out and bought these  Philips X-tremeUltinon gen2 P21W 6000K LED Bulbs (Twin) | PowerBulbs EU I fitted them today and I'm less than impressed tbh, actual light output is still terrible. I'm considering going back to the original tungsten bulbs or getting these Philips Vision Plus P21W (Twin) | PowerBulbs EU   Does anyone have recommendations for bulbs you can actually see with?

I've got Auxito LED reversing bulbs in mine, for a while now.  Very happy with it, and it's useful light.

Thanks for your reply, are these the ones you have? AUXITO 1156 LED Back Up Reverse Light, Turn Signal Light Brake Tail DR

There are two other types on their site but they look to be like the ones I had from Aliexpress with the end lens cap which were dreadful. Unfortunately the ones I linked to are out of stock.

Can someone assist regarding the dreaded fog lights please?

I wanted to replace them with something similarly white to the DRLs/main bean. Only recommendation I've seen was from Gizmo in the first post but a) the link is not working and b) I'd rather buy a known brand and from a shop in the EU as opposed to unknown origin and quality control items from Ali-whatever.

Going by that thinking I purchased this item from what i thought was a swedish shop:

http://se.ledworklight.net/80W-Cree-LED-Billampor-Dimljus-Stralkastare-Bakljus-H4-H8-H11?search=80W Cree LED Billampor Dimljus Strålkastare Bakljus H4 H8 H11

Turned it it was in fact just a "middle man shop" for ordering from China so it took a month or more to receive, and I also paid a "bonus" import tax of 8.5EUR on top... Anyway I received it yesterday, went out to fit and I realize it is not possilbe although it's advertised as H8 compatible, photo of the item in the left and the OEM one in the right:

The diameter of the bulb body is apparently slightly larger than the opening on the headlight so it can't even enter properly, let alone it doesn't feature these 3 alignment-locking metal tabs at the bottom to provide locking (not that I reached that step anyway).

On top of that the bulbs smelled awfully, like burnt electronics, and I feared of potential fire risk (I've read about smt like this with other cheapo chinese bulbs in another post in this thread  i think) so I wasn't even too fond of keeping them.

SO...

Who makes compatible, LEDs for this application and where I can readily order them in the EU? It can't be that the only options are these ultra cheap made ones from the usual Chinese shops??

PS, Anyone knows if this is a different socket type to thhe H8 and if so which one? Trying to sort this with the shop currently

GULP!! 170GBP?!  :worried:  What are these made of???  I said 3x not 10x :D

Was thinking of something up to 50GBP would be justifiable but 100+ for something of purely cosmetic nature and zero use is maybe too steep.

I'll consider the options, I have bought from that shop before, great service.

My question is is it H8 the correct type, or I have ordered the wrong type?

The 'essential' versions are slightly cheaper on eBay at ~£65 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224314963244 the fan might put you off though.

There used to be cloned versions of the Philips X-treme Ultinon which were fanless and cheap. I had a set on my FL MK2 Octavia which were great, think they are sat in the garage somewhere now...

H8, H11 and H16 are basically the same bulb with different wattages. The three tangs are slightly different shapes but with a quick trim can be made to fit in either fitting :)

I see, thanks for the info. Do you have any idea what's the case with the bulb I received in the photo above? How come it doesn't (seem to) fit even though it's supposed to be an H8?

I don't think they sent a H8 ;)

It could be a 9006 (HB4?) based on the listing?

I think the H8/H11 version should look like these:

Cheers, thought so but since bulbs is not exactly my forte i wondered where i was doing some really stupid.

I removed the boot lights from my 2017 estate and split open the light assembly to find a standard W5W bulb inside.

I fitted:

 MCK Auto – T10 W5W 501

 Very happy with the result.

A decent upgrade for £8.99 from amazon.

@newbie69 Varsågod ;)

@newbie69 also b careful of fog bulbs with "big butts" as they won't fit in the space behind, especially if u have a 272/280 Superb, as it will hit the radiator located there.

I got the Lumileds bulbs in mine - been 2 yrs n still happy with it.

They have an adjustable base so u can ensure optimum throw in line with the fog light reflector shield inside.

Also, ideally u don't want light throwing out of the top of the bulb as it will scatter the fog light beam, and **** off oncoming drivers.

U can see the original one has a "cap".

The LED version I got doesn't have light emitting from the top, just the sides.
