Error service: leave vehicle only when selector in position p

Hi, I have just picked the car up from the dealer, it went there for a check up regarding the fault, unfortunately they couldn't find the fault, I had to pay £96 for a diagnostics and the problem isn't fixed. I thought the fault would be stored in the history but they said it wasn't and couldn't see an issue. If I knew the fault isn't stored in the history I wouldn't even start the case because basically I have paid £96 for car being there and nothing being done, car is still under the warranty anyway. What are your thoughts??

My thoughts are that if the car is under warranty they should not have charged you to simply plug in a code reader, move the selector back and forth. I would take it up with the dealer principal. Also if the fault happens again try and get a photo of what message appears on the dash.

So basically they know about that fault and it would be replaced under the warranty but they can't do it because there is no fault in the history. Is there anything I can do to store that fault in the history of it come up again on the dash board??

In my case, ( Fabia, not an Octavia), a fault was not always stored to be read by diagnostics. On occasion it would clear itself after a period of time. I've also been advised that codes sometimes clear themselves after a certain amount of ignition off/on cycles. I provided photographic evidence of the fault displayed on the maxidot screen to the dealer as proof that the problem existed. Skoda then ran whatever diagnostic/s they do . If a relevant code existed, Skoda would follow it up with a plan of action to remedy the problem. When there was no relevant code, I wasn't charged ( the car's had several attempts to fix the issue). I would suggest that you ask for your money to be refunded because; you provided photographic evidence of the error message or, if you didn't, why would you have taken the trouble to take the car in in the first place if there wasn't an issue. If the dealer won't oblige, raise a complaint with Skoda UK. If they won't help, ask that the money be retrospectively refunded next time the message appears - it will. Secondly, take a photo of the error message every time it happens if possible, along with the mileage. Armed with evidence, take the car to the dealer asap to be looked at (ignition cycles mentioned above).

That is strange, thought all VAG cars would store this fault as I saw on my partners golf mk7 with it.

I plugged in my OBDEleven and can even see the number of times it has occurred.

I guess its either buy a OBDEleven (or similar) to scan yourself (think it was about £30-£40 direct), or wait for the error and get a photo as evidence (ofcourse be careful as you are driving).

Edit: oops sorry misread your post completely. Ignore my comments haha

Since then there was no issue, there was no fault on the dash so unfortunately I can't do much at the moment. The worst bit is that the warranty runs out in February and that is probably when the fault might come out and then I will have to pay for the fix because it won't be covered by the warranty anymore.

Yes I think you can almost guarantee that will happen! On my Skoda the problem goes away for weeks and then randomly re-appears.

The problem in Skoda in UK/Europe are putting their head in the sand and pretending there is not a problem.  I suspect with my next car I will vote with my feet and avoid VAG.  Not definite but a possibility.

My Vrs didn't store the error but I was lucky enough to have it show up when stationary and my passenger took a photo of it. Car had about 3 months warranty left and the dealer replaced the parts no question. Once it started to show up it gradually got more frequent. If you can't get a photo you could always aquire a copy......

I have had this problem for about a year now and it was driving me mental as it just gets more frequent and i was not happy about spending so much to fix the issue.

I have seen this thread before but never went through every comment, but the other day i skipped through and spotted that some of you have fitted the connectors that piggy back the gear selector and thought why not its only £50.

2 days later it arrived from eastern europe and wow 👏 so far so good no bloody annoying warnings on the way to work this morning,

Only bloody problem is i think im having the poxy water pump issue now and my car has only done 45000 miles 🙃

At the moment (touch wood!)  the error message has stopped, but I'm sure it will start again!  It seemes completely random when it occurs.

Just had my leaking water pump replaced on my 1.4TSI Octavia at 72,000 miles and 6 years old.  Not at all pleased.about this as cost 450 quid.  Are there any water pump threads you can point me at?

Hi guys, has anybody here put that microswitch set (5Q0 713 128 A) to a MY13-MY15 car? Mine is MY15 and error appears intermittently, so I am wondering if it depends on the MY or maybe part number of gear selector. Thanks!

Did you have the timing belt replaced at the same time?

No that had been replaced about a year earlier.  On Petrol engines like the 1.4 TSI the water pump is at the other end of the engine so the Skoda Main Dealer did not replace it when the timing belt was done.  So over the course of 2 years I'm nearly a £1,000 out of pocket for work that should have been engineered out of the engine design.  I can't help feeling if I had bought a Japanese or Korean car (or most other cars) I would not have needed to spend this extra money.  It's bad enough that all VW engined cars need new timing belts at great expense every 5 years, but then have to fork out a similar amnount for a new water pump is crazy,  Certainly will make me think twice about getting another Skoda/VW car.

Ok, I didn't know that.  I'm looking at £380 to get my timing belt & pump done which should have been done 3 years ago going by Skoda's recommendation. If I'd had the well know pump problem both would have been replaced sooner.

Hi ORDS.  I can see yopu have Diesel car.  Apparantly the pump and timing belt are next to each other and so get replaced at the same time.  With Petrol cars unfortuantly this is not the case.  Hence my additional costs.

NB £380 sounds a very good price for timing belt & pump.  Is that a main dealer or an independant specialist?

It's from one of those trusted traders sites. It's a mobile fitting service. I get a years warranty. I haven't got a price from Skoda but no harm in phoning  I guess.

That's an interesting one.  Hopefully an obvious cause will be found. I would have a diagnostic check done asap if you haven't done so already, as Skoda may not proceed without tangible evidence of it having occurred. My Fabia does it intermittently when the car is unlocked. Been going on for 2 years.

Maybe once a month or even longer. It's random, but only happens when the car is unlocked, (no key in ignition). Open any door (including the tailgate), and the message appears. After driving 25 metres, the message clears. It's very odd, but then so are the other electronic issues I have.

Hi all,

Does any one know 100% whether the switch would fit a 2015 fabia dsg? The retailer quoted me for the switch at around £300 and now I've come to book it in they claim that part isn't available on my car and it needs the full gear selector replacement nearer £1k...

Hi all,

Can anybody tell me if this switch can be changed on Superb MKIII (2016)?
Or do I need to change the complete gear selector assembly?

Thank you in advance.

Just had my Superb Mk III (2016) into my dealer who tells me the complete gear selector needs to be changed at a total cost of £758.40.

I think I will leave it for the moment and see how it goes as it has only happened twice and cleared within 10 minutes.
