Error service: leave vehicle only when selector in position p

👍Briliant, thank you.  I did discuss with the dealer as to what happens if the new part goes wrong, hopefully as you say, it won't! 🙂

  • Here is how i changed my switch on Skoda Superb 3 2016.

  • Problem solved only £40, I bought the switch from a friend "mechanic" and it tog me a half hour to mount on top of the DSG gear shift very easy so the only thing you need is 5Q0-713-128-A, some tools

  • As you were "diving" I'm not surprised there was an error

I guess you are saying that Skoda have issued a Technical Product Information. It is good news, as it seems to mean that this fault is now cheaper to fix, and my car is well out of warranty.

Until recently the fix for this problem was to replace the gear selector. The latest information on here is that it can be fixed by replacing a micro switch at a cost of around £300 which is around EUR 360. This is good news as replacing the selector would cost around EUR 1200. It is not a big problem in my car, as the warning message appears very infrequently, sometimes weeks apart, and it does not seem to be getting any worse. Other people have had a bigger problem with this.

Hi all, new here, as you can guess I am having the same issue!

I bought my Skoda Fabia SEL DSG new in 2015 from Wakefield and have had all services and MOT's done with Leeds Skoda since.

For the past year I've had this issue intermittently and for the first six months it flashed off as quick as it flashed on so I couldn't make out the error. The past six months it has become more frequent so I've managed to peice the error together and it's this one mentioned. In one recent 20 min journey it appeared three times.

My car went in on the 4th Feb for its 5th service and I told them about this issue. There response was that i needed to get it diagnosed which would cost £90. The next time I drove the car after the service it was dark and my auto lights were not working. I called the garage and they booked me in to look at that for yesterday (13.02.20). When I booked it in I said do diagnostic for p error too even though I wasn't happy paying the diagnostic when it's a wide known problem. They called me yesterday to say they have 'fixed' the p error by doing a software update. I am very skeptical and am convinced this will not resolve the issue as other comments have said it doesn't also. That will just be a waiting game now as to if/when it comes back and I'm sure it will and pretty soon too!

They said they couldn't find any issue with the lights. I said I didn't want the car back until it's fixed as it's not not worked for a week and then started working for them so they need to check again. They came back and said yes they don't work, well I told you that!

Anyway turns out the recent service they have done in February 2020 is causing the auto lights to stop working. They have another car in with the same thing. So they have emailed Skoda for a resolution.

In the end I didn't have to pay the £90 as I said if Skoda are aware of something being wrong by bringing a update out then why should I. She too easily agreed not to charge me and I'm pretty sure it's because they are aware the error will come back as she said we will 'see how it goes and may need further investigation if error comes back!

Pft. Not happy. But just a waiting game for now. They tried to fob me off saying there no related issues and all the rest of it before I booked it in.

Will keep you updated on the situation and would love to know if anyone local is having a similar experience at the moment.

Thanks

The car I bought Wednesday just threw this error at me this morning. Switching car off and on seemed to make it go away and it didn't return. I didn't buy the car from a Skoda dealer so I think there will be 3 month warranty and that's it. I'm considering buying a year long Skoda warranty and will get it sorted under that. <derp - not software fix, needs hardware>. Will see how it goes over the coming weeks.

If it's simply a software fix to a well known problem

It's not a software fix, it needs a hardware fix - a microswitch in the selector needs replacing.

Ah, understood. OK - so what is the best way forward for me? I'm not sure the garage I bought it from will truly understand the fault (or will plead ignorance/never seen it)

A Skoda warranty is going to be around £520, warrantydirect ~£300

I'm happy to buy a warranty as I factored this in anyway - anyone using a 3rd party warranty without issue here?

OK - I'm not leaving this to chance, bought Skoda Used Warranty - I know I'm covered now.

As mentioned above I had the software update on Thursday and today the message came back. Will be ringing garage Monday.

Mine was covered by Warranty Direct...a microswitch replaced...

Good to know, the Skoda warranty was more expensive than warranty direct...

As you guys have seen, the problem is entirely mechanical and not software related, don't be fobbed off by the dealers.

Mine had the new micro-switch fitted and has been fine since so at least you can go to them and reference this forum to prove its not a 'one off'.

Will do - I need to wait for the Skoda Warranty to kick in and I'll get it booked in. It's totally intermittent for me - one journey nothing will happen, others the light will flash and be present for a short while and then go away again.

Hi Guys,

I also have this error coming up and MOT is due. Has anyone had this come up during MOT? As it is intermittent I'm wondering if it comes up for 1-2 seconds during MOT, will this be classed as fail?

For warranty direct is this covered under Transmission?

Thanks

I can answer your final, question, yes i believe it was covered under Transmission - although i have the comprehensive cover with extras added.....

IMHO I don't think it will cause an MOT failure, after all no dashboard warnings are displayed and there's nothing mechanical broken etc.

Thanks, will chance the MOT. If it fails then be tempted to payout for Warranty Direct.

I agree with comments above. I believe the warning would have to remain on to be an MOT failure. If you get the MOT at a Skoda dealer they may be reluctant to admit it is a real problem.

Just had the MOT, it passed! Although when I did a scan on OBDEleven the error never popped up, so I guess I can't confirm if it would have passed or failed with the warning on or intermittent.

Hi

Anyone with a wiring diagram of the wires to the gearshift module. I can finde a manual on the internet but there is no wiring. It must be possible to solve this problem in another way then paing £1000 for getting a £5 switch changed, this is realy bad service from VW.

It must be possible to bypass the faulty switch with a good one on top of the shifter. If it is possible to get the right wires this problem could be solved for £10 max.

The £1,000+ was for changing the gear selector. Recently they have come up with a new fix where just the micro switch is changed. According to recent posts on here the cost is nearer £300, but still a lot of money for changing a switch. Best to get it done under warranty if possible, or insist on a contribution from VW/Skoda, as it is a known and well -documented problem.

Hi

Here in DK you can't get VW/Skoda to contribute with anything it very expencive and bad service I'm afrade, my car is 4,5 years old so I have to find a way to get it fixed. I have 1,5 year to get it fixed before MOT, lol..
If anyone has the information about this switch or an exploded view of the gearshift it would be great, just knowing where the bugger is placed would be great.

How often are you seeing the warning message? If it is infrequent, it is unlikely to result in a MOT failure. My car and others on here have passed MOT despite this problem. (I note you are not in UK, but expect your MOT test would be similar in this regard.)

Recently i had the same error on the maxidot. Went to the dealership, and they changed the switch for around 200 Euros, and indeed, they only change the switch and not the whole gear selector.
