The display works without the Columbus, I had it running with my MIB2 Amundsen and it would even work with a MIB1. You just won’t get image transfer or nav. Look back through this thread and you can see the videos and images of when it was first installed with the old radio and that’s the functionality you will be getting.

I wonder if this is the case with the production models being rolled out. If people are paying for Virtual Cockpit and then discover maps don't transfer because they didn't upgrade the stereo I suspect Skoda will have some pretty unhappy customers.

The VC also works with the Amundsen too, just doesn’t have the fancy 3D mapping from the Columbus and it’s not supposed to be able to display the map on the radio screen and the VC simultaneously but I’ve heard from owners that it can. I don’t believe Skoda sell it without a navigation system added.

Skoda sels it with Bolero, so without navigation, at least in my Country :).

As I don't really care about navigation (using AA) I want the fancy new screen :).

If there are no errors, and I have the usual images that  you have with the Maxi Dot I am fine.

@BalageCserne you are already here!! :) I don’t know about UAE mapping sadly as this seems to be much better documented in Europe but it’s certianly doable. Just depends on what you can get in your region and what you want to spend. I’ve done MIB1 Bolero to MIB2 Amundsen and now MIB2 Amundsen to MIB2.5 Columbus. I definitely recommend the MIB2 Amundsen if you just want SmartLink. If you want the WLAN to work and you want to keep the CD drive then you may want to look at a Columbus which also runs an 8 inch screen. The newest Columbus like mine has a 9.2 inch screen with no buttons :D

@SashaGraceMany thanks! Looks like the Amundsen can be a good option. There is a unit in the glove box - does it need to be replaced as well?

Apologies for the rookie questions...

That’s really interesting! Yes it is exactly the same as a Maxidot otherwise.

The unit in the glovebox is the radio. The screen is just a screen. The MIB1 Bolero and Amundsen runs a 240x400 resolution so it’s stuck with a 5.8 inch screen. The MIB2’s have a 480x800 resolution so can run 8 inch screens. You will need a 5Q0035874A Amundsen MIB2 and a 5Q0035726E USB. Screen wise it is up to you with 3 options, original 6.5 inch (5E0919605J), 8 inch PFL Columbus (5E0919606) ot 8 inch glass FL Amundsen (5E0919605M) :) Component Protection must be removed from the radio and then the radio must be coded to work in the car.

That's perfect. I just need to find someone to code it here then :). Don't want to do it myself without any support in case things go south. :D

This is in every Amundsen / Bolero software starting from 02xx. FeC/SWaP code that enables it is factory installed in all vRS and Superb Sportline.

Okay, so does anyone have the adaptation instructions to enable the sport and performance meters in the infotainment unit please?

Gotcha (I think).

To my mind as long as people have the option of displaying it on the radio screen or the VC then that seems reasonable to me.

If I paid for VC and I couldn't display the nav on it I would not be a happy camper!

You’d need ODIS for this, as it requires FeC/SWaP activation. Can’t be done without it I’m afraid. Off road screen can be done with VCDS or similar though :)

On a 18 MY, I was led to believe that FeC/SWaP was already installed????

Only on a 245. If the car doesn’t have it when you go to the Car tab then it’ll need the FeC/SWaP coding added to the radio.

One more question: :)

Were you able to set your miles on the VC?

can it be done or you have to live with what it had?

  • Author

If it’s a new VC like mine was then the mileage can be set, as shown here

101204 miles :D

If it’s used then you’ll have to go with what it says already I’m afraid.

Thanks for the info :)

can you share anything on where you got yours?

Came from Latvia via eBay. I searched Skoda Virtual Cockpit and got lucky with this one, brand new for USD 700. I sent some offers back and forth and we eventually settled on USD 610 plus shipping. All it was GBP 483 with currency conversion through PayPal.

It can be done, however it’ll be a homemade wiring loom to the door interior lights if you don’t upgrade the door controllers to highline ones. Activating puddle lights on the midline door controllers doesn’t achieve anything sadly. I don’t know how to rig them up unfortunately as I got them as a free upgrade with my folding mirrors :)

I have been looking at upgrading my door controllers to Highline ones and have found some with the correct part numbers

5Q0959592B

 5Q0959593A

but they are listed as Mk7 golf parts for a reasonable price but if I search for Skoda ones with the same part numbers the price doubles will the golf ones work in my Octavia or do you think it will have to be Skoda ones. Also as my car is only an SE it doesn't have any of the wiring loom for puddle lights or the lights in the bottom of the door is this part of the loom separate from the rest or is it part of the mirror loom. I wasn't going to go for the power fold mirrors just yes due to the cost of parts but figured upgrading the door controllers would future proof me for when I can get some

I did a lot of work in my past on Construction Equipment Control systems and was involved with Thatcham Security and at a seminar about clocking miles/Km/hours it was recommended that for security that the Odometer count is stored in multiple modules and at Each ignition cycle there is a checksum and value request sent by the Dashboard to ensure it’s using the right value. The highest value with a valid checksum is used.

The Dash, whether it’s a Monochrome or Colour Maxidot or a VC is a display primarily and will do very little processing or control routines.

They are the correct ones. Remember to backup the controller coding from the old door controllers so you know what you’ll need to add or remove coding wise from the new controllers. The new door controllers will support the puddle lights too. When you plug the folding mirrors in, there is no extra wiring but once the puddle lights are coded, they will work :)

Interesting, I have no idea why the VC can’t have the mileage altered once it has done more than 100km but for now it can’t. I guess someone will work it out at some point.

thanks for that when you changed yours did the mirrors come with their own loom then just wondering if I can just get the loom and controllers first then look for the mirrors as I dare say with a bit of coding the lights could be activated and any warnings about the mirrors turned off until I got some

  • Author

You need the whole mirror as it comes with the loom yes. I don’t know if you could make it work without the loom, I know some people have made the puddle lights work by splicing into the door interior lights so they come on, but then they only come on when the door is opened, not like the OEM ones should work.

The 100km max to have the mileage altered doesn't only apply to the VC, VAG have implemented this for many years (over 20 AFAIK) on all replacement instrument clusters, in an attempt to make clocking more difficult.

Over 100km you have to use aftermarket hacking tools.

Indeed, however the aftermarket people have cracked it on the older clusters but nobody has got it down on the VC’s yet. I have my old colour cluster with 99,500 miles showing. Great for someone with a monochrome cluster showing just under that or anyone really because the mileage on that could be altered :)

Can individual volume settings be set for the Radio and Media?, as the audio from my SD card is a fair bit lower than that of the radio i always for get to turn it down when switching to the radio

Check in the media sound tab. The BT and Aux settings can be changed for sure.
