I attatched the negative wire to the brown (pin 1) of the rear wiper. No other ground on my install. Don’t know if the advice I gave you will work, but it’s worth a shot I suppose!

Ah, that 'by the way' question did it! I'd got the power wiring completely wrong and assumed the brown was positive. Brown negative and black/lilac positive (pins 1 and 4), so it wasn't a coding issue after all.  All working now - thanks a lot! And not bad for about £30.

Glad it’s sorted for you.

I’ve just had the call back from the powder coating place to say I can now bring my wheels in 4 weeks time rather than 8 weeks as a cancellation has appeared so now I need to choose a colour. I am losing the diamond rim, far to expensive to have that redone and as I know the guy who owns the powder coating facility I can get them done very cheaply. I am torn at this point between having them the same shade of grey all over or having them done in black or silver. I am less keen on the black as it looses the definition of the rim IMO, but still a contender as there are plenty of black accents on the car. The grey I like but still, not really sure. The colour that’s really grabbed my eye is the silver as I could never see my dark car with silver wheels but the more I see them, the more I like them and I think the silver Gemini’s and Xtreme’s are underrated. I am thinking of going for the silver because it’s an OEM finish for them and if I find it doesn’t suit the car I will at the very least have an immaculate, as new set of OEM Xtreme’s to sell on. I have 4 weeks to decide. Answers on a postcard I suppose!!

I'd go for a very bright Silver. I've seen some Extremes in Silver and they look epic.

The silver variety are still diamond cut from factory, so they wouldn't be an OEM finish strictly speaking. I don't think any Xtrems come non diamond cut.

I'd go grey.

Black works when diamond cut as there is still a pattern, solid black looks like you're running steel wheels most of the time, no shape or definition at all.

Edit - to add to that, the Geminis are different and came in diamond cut grey or non cut black and non cut silver.

I know the silver strictly has the diamond cut bits but having them silver all over it still keeps the definition of them IMO. So does the grey though, to a degree. Need to see the finishes I think before making a decision 100%.

Whatever you decide please could we have photos?  I'm currently pondering on getting my wheels done.

Something tells me the car will never be 'done' B)

  • Author

It will be ‘done’ the day it gets sold haha

Err.. possibly not.  With all the stuff you've done to it I'd guess the most likely buyer when you come to finally get rid of it will be another vRS enthusiast.  Which means someone else will be doing their own thing with it for years after you move it on.

  • Author

I suppose. It’ll be done for me anyway haha. I’m not thinking about getting rid for at least another couple of years yet though.

Finally!!! The sub £20 reverse camera install is complete. Shout out to my Dad who did the cable routing through the passenger side of the car for me today because he felt sorry for me with my broken thumb, all these mods, but only 9 working digits to do them with. This is quite an easy install and something that all UK spec cars at least are capable of running. You need a Bolero with BT or above (MIB1 or 2, doesn’t matter), some of these to connect the video feed to the radio quadlock after you’ve chopped the RCA plug end off https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F171641862721 and a camera which is NTSC, not a PAL one! That detail has held me up by 7 weeks on this install. If your car is Pre MY16, it should be a 92x35mm boot handle like mine so you’ll need a camera like mine if you don’t want to cut. It’s bigger than I wanted, but on my dark coloured car it’s still neat. I’ll link some cameras below. Pretty sure MY16 onward is 112x48mm so I’ll link one of them in too. Coding is simple, just 5F Infotainment > Long Coding > Byte 19 Enable Bit 4. I also found in 76 Park Pilot > Long Coding there is a setting to add a lowline reverse camera which I did and as you can see it all works really well  The parking sensor display is usually on the left of the screen, and it all works like an OEM camera, except the camera I’ve ended up with (not the test camera from my Dad’s car) has no lines, but I don’t mind. I tapped into the rear wiper motor to power the camera, which is much easier than trying to power it from the rear lights. I’m very impressed with it so far. Here is a link to the type of camera I have https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/bGNgICLB And here is a link to an MY16 sized camera :) https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/sPzYJSt

Just for the record after failed attempts with an OEM camera which had no end of line programming  from https://www.cars-equipment.com/. On another point dont use them i spent months trying to get a response until my credit card company refunded me then they were all over me hence i had a refund and their camera is still in fitted to the car. I am looking at this as an alternative but the camera you mention for the MY 16 is not correct in the link . The size and everything is right but it has no side or top clips to keep it in place unless you find a suitable adhesive.  This is the correct one https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?spm=a2g0s.9042647.6.2.7eda4c4dkdCzxz&orderId=508341794444648&productId=32964548434 i only realised as my original handle is out of the car and identical without those silly threaded bolt fixings . Just to save anyone wasting money .

Before you go getting another camera, see if you can find someone local to you with VCP (Vag Can Pro). I had exactly the same problem regarding the programming having bought from cars-equipment. VCP is able to load the programming to the camera.

Re wheel colours I enquired about this but ended up buying 2 replacement wheels.

Theres a thread on here too, someone had them done grey and they looked very good.

Eventually i I will have to get them done but not for a couple of years at least.

The diamond finish doesn’t seem the most durable long term - especially in the UK

I did think about that but it needs calibrating as well and by the time I mess about I might as well spend 20 quid and use the original wiring. The camera I have at the moment didn't cost anything in the end. Cars equipment didn't even respond to my credit card provider within 60 days so it was refunded and I had a letter from Nationwide saying I can dispose of the faulty goods.

I didn’t bother with the calibration and it works perfectly, with moving lines, etc. You’ll get a lot more functionality out of the OEM camera if you can get it working.

Looks good Was it easy to do with vcp I've seen a lot on eBay etc but never used it as I have vcds. There was quite a few comments on Ross techs site when I posted about the end of line programming and someone mentioned that no coincidence that car equipment and skoda both being in Prague possibly coming from source hence no programming .

I really need to get to writing my how-to guide!

The guy I found with VCP had done a bit of research into what had to be done. The process was actually quite simple. Once the initial programming is loaded, the coding can be done.

Ive had the camera installed for over a year now and not working as id lost all interest . I had seen so many people with the same issue its just finding someone with VCP and the know how . Its all correctly wired up just needs the camera flashing . Did you end up getting yours refunded .
