Upgrading Headunit to Columbus?

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

Hi all,

Sorry to re-ignite this thread, I know this has been mentioned several times previously but I just wanted to double check my understanding is correct before ordering an incompatible screen!

I have what I believe to be a MIB 2 Amundsen 6.5" screen. Please correct me if I am wrong, image attached.

What are my screen upgrade options? Am I correct in thinking I have the choice of the pre FL Columbus (5E0919606) or the FL Amundsen (5E0919605M)?

Car is a MY17 Octavia VRS.

Apart from just removing the existing screen with the standard DIN tools, is there anything else required?

Thanks,

Angelo

I believe that is correct from what I’ve read on here. I have just upgraded my screen to what I think is the FL 8inch version (with soft buttons) and it’s gone straight in no problem. As mentioned in this thread, the only thing that doesn’t work is the App button.

which leads me to a question please - I haven’t unlocked CarPlay at the dealers yet but wondering if there is now a solution to get the app button working (on what I believe is an amundsen mib2)

Unfortunately not if you have a 5Q0035874A Amundsen from 2016 but if you have a 5Q0035874B Amundsen from 2017 you just need a firmware update.

The screen is plug and play on MIB2 units as they all run 480x800 resolution, but the headunit is a bit more complex. The connections are plug and play but there will be component protection and coding to do. Bolero’s do not have nav so it’ll be an Amundsen unless it already has a Columbus. If it’s a MIB1 Amundsen and you can’t be doing with the small screen then a Columbus would be a good way to go or as I have done, a MIB2 Amundsen. If it has a MIB2 Amudsen I would leave as is unless you really want the CD player back as the 8 inch screen is plug and play so you could plug the Columbus screen into the Amundsen and it’ll work with no coding required. I have an Amundsen with a Columbus screen and it’s great :D

Hi, can you help one more?! I have this MIB with navi on it, but my question, is it this Bolero or Amundsen? Possible to update? I add here photo! Aaa en one more, after the activation for reara camera, the navi doesn't work and says that is not suported! Know something about error?!Thx

If you had/have Navi then it's not a Bolero, looks like a MIB1 Amundsen to me in that case.

BTW .heic files need a special app to open them, far better to post .jpg pictures

I'm looking to replace my MIB2 Amundsen screen with a MIB2 Columbus (5E0919606)

I've seen a screen on ebay but the item description states "Only screen, no frame".

Would I need a frame for this replacement, or will I have one from my existing Amundsen?

I also have a MIB1 Amundsen and have been told by the experts that you cannot just change the display with a MIB1 Amundsen - they've tried it and you get multiple images not one better image.

Hello guys, I have a question if you can help. One friend gave me bigger screen for my multimedia and I plugged it in and the result is this in the photo, the only different from mine is the screen inch.

I don’t think you can make it work but I stand to be corrected on that. I’d find out what head unit you have and buy a bigger screen that fits, I’ve done it and it’s well worth doing

Hi all

I hope this is the right thread for this query

I have a 2018 Skoda Octavia 3 TSI L&K - the car was affected by flood and most of its electrical modules were destroyed

The car had the canton sound system with amplifier under the seat. Here are the part numbers of the original parts of the car (all destroyed)

screen - 5E0919605M
radio control unit - 5Q0035864C
amplifier - 81A035223

When replacing the radio, I bought the larger Columbus system. Here are the part numbers of the newly installed items

screen - 5E0919606D
radio control unit - 565035021C
amplifier - 81A035223 (same as original)

all the three replacement items were in used condition

The new radio is working, but I'm unable to get audio output - VCDS cannot communicate to the amplifier (47 sound system).

I checked the coupler to the amplifier (underneath the front passenger seat) and there is no optical light coming.

For reference, I looked at another Octavia 3 (diesel L&K) with canton sound system - looked at the coupler coming to the amplifier and I can see the red light coming through the optical line

For checking, I plugged my own amplifier into this car and it was working fine

Any pointers on how to solve this problem? I'm not sure if the donor car had the canton sound system - so could the coding in 5F be changed to make it recognize the amplifier?

Here are the fault codes in my car

I would suggest that you might first want to get the Component Protection removed first.  The MIB system has in essence gone into lock down and will not start up its individual communication components until this issue is solved.  Fix CP first - you can either get the unit jail-broken or you can go to your Skoda Dealer and get them to fix it (about an hour on ODIS).

Other thoughts - have you connected the optical connection into the correct connection on the back of the MIB system (I think it is the grey connector)?  Other thoughts could be a failed fibre optic connector.

Hi

thank you for the reply!

I believe the radio in my car is a hacked (or jail broken as you mentioned) unit - the guy selling it to me told me that he would make the necessary adjustments so that the radio would be plug and play on my car

And sure enough, the unit did work straight away when I installed it onto the car (without needing to lift the CP) - I'm able to use all the features of the unit - radio, nav, android auto etc

correct me if I'm mistaken - if the unit isn't jailbroken, nothing would work unless the component protection is lifted, right?

I'm a bit new to the MQB infotainment system as my other car is an Octavia II - and all that needed was a simple radio code when the head unit was replaced and everything worked perfectly after that :)

On the connector - I'll double check the connections again - but I seem to remember that there was no optical light shining on the back of my radio unit (the one in the glove box)

I'll remove it and check again

Thanks again & Best Regards

P.S. - I have saved the scan log and adaptation map of the diesel Oct 3 I mentioned earlier- should I compare the adaptation channels (5F) of that car with mine?
