Living With A Sportline Plus 272 Hatch

Yeah I was just about to explain why my fuel economy has continued to improve to the overall average after 9,000 miles of 39.90mpg for those that are considering taking the next step. You may see from the graph that when standard at 2,400rpm there is about 120bhp available and about 360nm of torque. Compare that same 2,400rpm after the map and the figures rise to 160bhp and 480nm. This means you really don't have to mash the throttle at low revs when driving normally keeping up with traffic. Even at 3,000rpm there is a marked increase in power up from 150bhp to 215bhp.

Did a brim to brim test this week. 398.8km as I pulled in to fill back to brim. 33.41L went in. I make that 33.83mpg. I’m quite happy with that considering I’ve had the car only a couple of weeks so my driving is quite “spirited” and that also includes 5 or 6 Launch Control tests.

Doing some napkin maths - over the last 4 years I only put 54,000KM on my Diesel VRs.
That was getting me high 40’s per gallon. Let’s say 50mpg. 5.65l per 100KM

Fuel for 4 years cost 3051L @ let’s say 1.15 per L. = 3508€

At 34mpg 8.3L per 100km = 4582L @ let’s say 1.25 per L = 5602€

Difference of 2094€ - sounds a lot. But the petrol engine was cheaper to buy than the Diesel by about 2k to 2.5k - so actually break even given my mileage.
And even if the engines cost the same and there was no saving in buying a petrol - over 4 years 2094€ is about 10€ per week extra. Totally worth it for the smile it puts on your face.
The VRs was a great car, loved it. But this is another level of enjoyment while driving.

Know what you mean saved £15,000 buying a 9 month old ex-Skoda HQ car with 4,901 miles on the clock (8,000km) which pays for a lot of Tesco Momentum also known as big fun.

Finally after 11 months without leaving the UK we booked 2 weeks in Cyprus last night........and no it's not Aiya Napa, bit old for that place. Looks a nice Hotel right on the beach and it has a car related name if anyone wants to have a guess. Cherry on the cake was the price with an extra discount from TUI. Just need to get Covid tested the week we fly.

I've no idea where you're staying but from past experience October in Cyprus can be quite warm, unless you venture up to the mountains. Frozen hail-stones &  4 degrees in Troodos (when compared with 20 degrees in Pafos) was a surprise, especially 'cos we weren't properly dressed....

Ayia Napa is OK in the off-season, Cape Greko & Protaras probably worth a visit too.

If you are going to rent a car, (I always do if only to get to / from our digs.) you'll find Cyprus is a fun place for drivers, a really useful motorway network, entertaining main roads & some twiddly routes through the mountains. It's a country of many contrasts, from posh shopping centres, supermarkets  & upscale beach resorts to derelict villages (remnants of the Turkish / Greek conflicts) in the hills.

The EU has funded much improved public transport too (no trains though...), cheap local buses + long distance coaches too.

If you do want to visit the Turkish occupied zone, it's best done in Nicosia, just walk north on Ledra Street (pedestrian only road) there are Customs Posts either side of the Nato no-mans land. (Bring passport, of course.) There are other border crossings that would require a car to reach them, but rental cars can't visit the Turkish zone, 'cos they wouldn't be insured.

I've visited Cyprus 6 times, so I've learned a little about the island & since I'm not a beach person, I'd really recommend some exploring.

Makes sense, I saved approx. £8.5K by buying my ex-Skoda Superb. Not such a good deal as yours, but it was only approx, £27.5 K new back in 2012............

Tres posh...

We've used a hotel once in Coral Bay, (really cheap deal in November), usually we stay in Tala, about 5 miles inland & 1000 ft up from Paphos.

Cooler up there, albeit windy, not many tourists + good local shops etc. Very much expat country.....

We only paid £879 PP for 14 nights all inclusive when you will pay more to book direct with the hotel for room/food plus cost of flights and transfers. 4 Star rated.

Thanks to @Tim1631 with his Revo blog post on the Bosch Direct Injection and GPF equipped cars such as my Superb 272. A must read for any 272 owner it explains how they were surprised on their test FWD Cupra GPF with stock 286bhp and 380nm engine they were surprised the GPF wasn't as restrictive as they expected. Indeed after 5,000 miles of testing (8,000km) in road conditions it was allowing 515nm of reliable torque and 370bhp. They decided to dial back the launch torque figure to 500nm to protect the clutch packs so we will see how my 514nm AmD map copes long term. They also commented that the 7speed DQ381 is an excellent gearbox and easily adapts to more than stock power and torque and doesn't need a TCU upgrade until you reach stage 2 levels which is good to hear. Another interesting comment was that FWD cars such as the Cupra and Vrs245 have one larger GPF but 4WD cars such as the Golf R and Superb 272 have two smaller GPF's. The FWD development Cupra dropped from 0-60mph in stock form from 5.67seconds to 5.18seconds and the 0-100mph time dropped from 12.04seconds to 10.44seconds which is almost identical to my heavier 4WD Superb. The stage 1 Cupra gets to 60mph 7/8 metres faster than the stock car and 15 metres faster to 100mph compared to stock to demonstrate the performance gains over stock. My Superb with the 2 smaller GPF's for reference compared to the Cupra produced 283bhp and 369nm as standard. They also state they would not recommend a GPF delete by any owner because that would make it illegal under European vehicle legislation.

Back in the Superb this morning after it was parked in the drive for a week and delivered an impressive 42.7mpg on the commute but the average speed was quite low at 42mph due to roadworks and traffic. 204 miles driven and 420 miles left in the tank.

Monday evening's commute involved pressing the go faster pedal a few times (it can be quite addictive) resulting in a poor for me journey average of 32.9mpg but last night was a better 39.0mpg. This tank which will last another month because it will sit in the drive feeling unloved for 24 days when I'm on holiday in 2 weeks time. By end of play today mileage will be 14,093 and this tank driven 315 miles so far with indicated 285 miles range left at an average of 37.9mpg.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything useful in it as the last few pages seems to be full of someones holiday pics and people obsessing about mpg in a 272ps car?

Thanks

Well it is much faster than an Octavia judging by the Meteor Grey Mk3 Vrs I went past on the sliproad before joining the motorway but if I say I went over 70mph there are some sad people on this forum that report me and I get banned unlike my clean driving licence. Living with a trouble free car is probably boring but I'm glad I bought a good one with a good engine that delivers stunning performance and surprisingly good economy given it's size and weight. If you're ever in the Midlands you can take it for a spin and it may surprise you too.

It's all automatic and I suppose this is a time where you'd rather have less points than more isn't it! ;)

As for spamming - this pretty much covers it:-

Back in the wife's Karoq for my 3 nights and it has half a tank left after 237 miles driven with 240 miles range left so probably fill up Sunday.

Mods can this be moved to one of the lifestyle chains?

Someone covering his holiday plans, daily updates on driving his other cars and plans on filling up doesn't deserve to be spammed to the top of the forum daily.

Congratulations you have won a prize. You have made it onto my exclusive ignore list numbering less than 20 out of 175,000 forum members.:hi:

It can stay here but I agree there does appear to be a lot of extraneous input!

Over 31,000 views since January 3rd suggest people are curious about the Superb performance range topper and only half a dozen moaners.;) In 11 days I will be taking a 3 week break from Briskoda as I enjoy my holiday with no distractions. Feel free to arrange parties to celebrate ensuring numbers are 6 or less of course.

Well at my Grammar School I was always chosen to play for the Football, Cricket and Rugby teams (1,000 students from 14 to 18 years old) which made me popular with the Girls but unpopular with the Boys who seemed to be jealous of my sporting prowess and my other exploits.:tongueout:
