Back in the what??  Shy I confess this is the first time I envy you about something! finding a stage 1 272 a beast  :D:D    you are a blessed man!

Personally, I don't think I will ever be able to call this car fast with anything less than 500bhp or thereabouts, and after last week's modifications I'm probably closer to 380bhp as times suggest. Still...

Interesting thinking, since Swedish speed limits seem to be similar to the UK's, why would you want / where could you really need 380 bhp?

Serious question. 'cos I find it difficult to find any road the UK (South East) to stretch my ancient Superb, never mind a 280 or a Golf R.

Cheers, DC.

Bit done to death these "questions" but if you absolutely need an answer to sleep at night: To accelerate to speed limits as fast as possible, for Autobahn trips, the track, driving in closed airfields, dyno calibration, and many more that I could think of probably.

On a serious note, the fact that I personally find it to be merely ok in terms of speed has nothing to do with what I "need" or the frequency of exploiting the power as you put it, but simply with my past ownerships and experiences. I could do without several luxuries in my life if I had to, a powerful car being one of them, but as long as I'm able to afford them comparisons are nautrally being made against each other.

As far as I'm concerned, the quicker I can overtake someone on a single lane road, the more safe I am as the added power means that I am in the oncoming lane for less time.

Plus, the more power (in a modern car) the less you have to work it. It makes for a more comfortable drive.

Two very good points which people don't think about until they are stuck behind a tractor and need the quick acceleration to get past SAFELY. My car developed maximum torque at 4,500rpm when it left the factory which the dyno map proves but after the remap maximum torque is much stronger yet is developed much lower at 2,600rpm which aids acceleration at lower rpm and benefits econonmy which some people forget just concentrating on the headline power figure developed up at almost 6,000rpm.

Wow!................zzzzzzzzzz

And there I thought he slipstreamed tractors to boost his mpg......silly me.....so many tractors on the M1 too....

Interesting torque figures, when AMD tweaked my Superb, the before & after max torque engine speeds were 3119 rpm (291 Nm) & 3912rpm (361 Nm).

To be fair, both torque curves are reasonably flat, & after the stage 1 map there was more torque & power at any engine speed.

Max power went from 214.9 ps @ 5464 rpm to 252.6 ps @ 5844 rpm.

We had better results from SWMBO's 2011 vRS Octy, but that had covered 30k miles when maped,  whereas my Superb only had  covered  6k miles.

More important, (to me.....) power at 4K rpm went from 160 ps to 205 ps, which is more than the official (but a tad conservative...) 200 ps @ 5100-600 rpm.

As for overtaking , the only tractors we see around here are the 40 mph beasties towing large trailers on a 50 mph road.

For me it's only 2 miles until the exit so I'm quite happy to leave it in D & cruise for 2/3 minutes.

On motorways or other divided highways flicking the L/H paddle down to 4th  is usually enough for a safe overtake.

It's the same in the Golf, very similar gearing (6-speed DSG) but with less weight, 300 ps & 380 Nm + 4WD it's a bit nippier, & quick enough for me.

I'm sure that a tweaked Superb or Arteon would feel much the same, but they are both too big for my garage, which is why I really would like a 4WD vRS Octy Mk. 4............

Only a Fabia will fit in my pathetic modern garage LOL.

Torque at x rpm is basically power.

Therefore more torque at lower rpm means more power simply. Generally lower rpm will benefit economy as friction and losses is less. However it doesn't automatically mean better economy because to make the power, fuel is still required. It will come down to other factors as how thermodynamically efficient that power is made at the lower rpm compared to the previous power at a higher rpm.

At the peak power, if more power is made (compared to before remap) and one is using it, it will use more fuel as there is no getting away from physics.

That was helpful post , why bother reading it or commenting unless your life is exciting...probably not though

One is not using it if just trucking around and near or above UK NSL's with the odd booting it to pass a tractor or race people that do not know they are being raced.

115 ps of a 1.0 TSI can get a biggish motor about, and a few more ps or Nm will make them accelerate a bit quicker.

230 ps might be double again, 460 ps again double, but the UK NSL stays the same and when going someplace quick the 1.0 tsi might arrive not far behind you.

Like many over this weekend's fine weather finally met our best friends for surf and turf BBQ in their back garden with a Banana Banoffee dessert and took the Superb so I've left myself with a tough challenge for the Monday commute. The computer says I have 55 miles of fuel left and it's 52 miles to work and back to the local Shell garage so need to put on my Miss Daisy driving gloves because I really want to hit 1,000km on this tank to prove to myself it can be done in something as big, heavy and powerful as a Superb with a petrol engine.

A 66 litres (14 1/2 gallons) tank and petrol up the pipe should be good for 621 miles.

43 mpg or so from 66 litres.

Nasty! My house was built in '65 & I reckon the garage was designed to be able to store & maintain a Mk. 1 Cortina.

It's 16' 6" x 8' 6", but with a reinforcing brick buttress 1/2 way along each side, reducing the effective width to 7' 9", & making it impossible

to open the front door on a Superb 3.

Which is why I probably want a new vRS....................

Do you have a spare jerry-can, just in case? Or, do you have a Tesco garage en-route? If all else fails, adding a few litres of 95 octane would .be a good idea.

(Madams R was delivered with a full tank of 95 octane & it's still running........)

You have read my mind. Once before I was down to 15 miles and decided to do a Formula 1 pitstop for £10 of 95 octane unleaded from Sainsbury's which is halfway along my journey. It's my get out of jail free card for emergency occasions.

What is your 'average mpg (UK)'  showing at the time it shows you as having 55 miles range.

New PB this morning should make it back to the Shell garage now.

Just did it 1,008km or 626 miles and put 67.51 litres in (14.85 litres) for a tank average of 42.22mpg. Now after 4,878 miles and 567.59 litres (124.85 gallons) at a total cost of £710.40 the overall average is now 39.07mpg. According to the computer there was 8km of fuel left in the tank.

Day 157 update and the main reason for buying this car was Performance followed by Practicality. Two other aspects of ownership have really surprised me though recently. Last weekend when returning home from visiting our best friends after a BBQ there is a long climb on a dual carriageway but it is only a 40mph limit and there are fixed speed cameras. Going uphill the car is flexible enough to stay in 7th gear at indicated 42mph at just 1,200rpm which is almost diesel like without the associated clatter of course. The last 3 commutes of 27.3 miles have shown how fuel efficient it is even compared to my previous much lighter stage 2 Vrs245 giving amazing figures of 45, 47 and 49mpg.

Had a spirited drive home yesterday which can only be reflected by saying when I left work I had 620 miles left in the tank. Very sad that we can’t celebrate the wife’s 21st Birthday again because of this Pandemic so no nice holiday or even a meal at our local favourite restaurant so just going to post a couple of my favourite photo’s from the last 6 months.
