And you are really shocked??

Before the Superb was acquired multiple threads (in the Superb forum...) every day were being derailed by telling to all the people that never asked or gave a damn  that a modified Octavia was probably the best car on earth, relieved from all that un-necessary AWD weight among other things   😆

Turns out all that was accumulated suppressed envy as when he finally got his hands on the cheapest Sportline he could get, this car suddenly became the new king of the road, with Diesel comparable mpg and hot-hatch beating performance 😆

It's a case to study for sure... But as long as he amuses an entire forum (when he can contain himself to not insult other nationalities) why not keep these posts going?

Didn't realise a £39,000 Sportline Plus with the most powerful engine Skoda produce was a cheap car. As you bought yours new you will have lost over 15,000 Euro's in the first 12 months so I'm not exactly jealous at your financial loss. I made a mistake in 2017 buying the Octavia and spending a further £3,500 modifying it which I rectified by buying a used Superb so the same mistake wouldn't happen again. The more options on a new car will lead to even more depreciation on the second hand market and many of these toys don't enhance the driving enjoyment. I expected the Superb to average 34mpg given my commute so the near 39mpg it is actually achieving is a nice bonus. No point spending £100 extra every month on fuel if you keep the the motorway speed limit. Keeps points and fines off your licence to.

****ing contests online are so ridiculous but still far more exciting than all the mpg posts in this thread so I'll tag along. So yeah, £39,000 is not very cheap, it's just not what you paid or what it's worth now so it can't boost your financial ability which is set closer to that 25K limit, is that really your understanding of assets' values? To be clear, I'm fine with that limit or with any other budget for that matter, but it seems you aren't, trying to refer to your imaginary 39K car to get your confidence boost once again - In fact did it ever cost that much?? It doesn't even have a digital dash  😗

Now since you asked, 15K eur loss?! How'd you come up with that? In fact mine was bought during a pretty attractive campaign with almost every extra option included for 390K SEK. Due to that, similar cars with similar mileage to mine (up to 20K km) 16 months later are being sold for 360-370K SEK I kid you not, here's Sweden largest car sale website as I always like to talk with facts:
 https://www.blocket.se/annonser/hela_sverige/fordon/bilar?cb=34&cbl1=6&cg=1020&cxpf=12&fu=1&me=4&mys=2019

Less than 3K EUR over this time is actually the least depreciation I've seen in any car I've got.  and I didn't have to find out how the original owner's farts smell 😄   Again, I don't judge you for that, people like all sorts of weird things today.

£32,170 is the current exchange rate for 390,000 Swedish Krona. The UK market is not like the Swedish market so no point comparing.

I'd be interested in seeing a long-term pic, be cool to see how the average speed relates to the mpg.

My computer actually under reads but will post one for comparison. Actual fuel used in 4,251 miles 500.08 litres for actual 38.65mpg.

Doesn't even have Digital Dash lol... Poor mans Superb lol

Equipment wise it has all the useful stuff I need, spare wheel, electric boot, blind spot monitoring and ambient lighting. Not a fan of the 9.2" Columbus which is standard on the Plus model as is the electric drivers seat. Never use the standard heated front seats or the ACC. Some high spec Sportlines were £8,000 more than my car with under 5,000 miles on the clock back in December 2019 which is just nuts IMHO. I prefer the 8" Amundsen which I had in the Vrs245 and which is standard in the wife's Karoq SEL.

Confused again? I didn't care to compare actual figures, it was you who out of the blue claimed I lost 15.000 EUR in one year remember? Just scroll up the page...  I only said your Superb was really cheap for a 272, which is true. As we're slowly finding out it lacks more and more "must-have" equipment, no digital dash, no proper infotainment (can you even read the road names on that tiny 8" 😄)  so even in the first place it couldn't have been the £39,000 car you claimed.

Of-course,  doesn't everybody prefer their "lesser" variant over the top-spec models they can't afford be it a phone, car, computer? If only I had a penny for all the times I've heard that! 😂

My car has the 9.2" Columbus because it was the most expensive Sportline available in the UK so you don't understand UK spec levels either. Asked the wife what her 2 favourite features on her Karoq and thought she might say the high seating position, the reversing camera or even the Moon White metallic colour but no she likes the KESSY and electric handbrake the most (both also standard on my basic Superb). My long term maxidot over 80 hours and 3,200 miles is showing 38.6mpg which is quite close to the actual.

Well by browsing Briskoda I had learned that (although indifferent to me really) the Plus should come with the Columbus but when talking to you facts are irrelevant, you could have claimed it was a Plus even if it wasn't, for extra boasting... Would that surprise anyone here really?

People can go through various dramas or traumatic situations in their lives but 38.6mpg over 3200 miles in a Superb 272 is proper misery for any car person, no wonder you're coming out this way in the forum. At least now I know why so I'll be showing more understanding in the future when I read false claims or the usual lack of reasoning in your arguments, I had no idea what you were going through!

Myself and my wife are both lucky to be still working and not affected by less pay (furlough) which is affecting 75% of UK families at the moment due to our Governments failure to get a grip with COVID-19 hence the current 31,500 deaths we have seen here. Back on topic my local Skoda dealer has an almost identical Black Magic hatch 272 Sportline Plus without my spare wheel but with 2 options (no virtual cockpit fitted) Canton and Reversing camera with 7,654 miles recorded for £25,500. My car had 4,901 miles when I bought it last year for £23,840. The difference between the cars is £1,660 which is a lot to pay for those 2 options plus it is missing the £150 spare wheel option. Because this car was specified just under the £40,000 tax break the annual road tax like my car is £145. If you get carried away with options in the UK you end up paying an extra £310 per year for the first 5 years (extra £1,550 in tax).

missing word

Shy, when I read your comments I have learned to be prepared for the odd, irrelevant statement but even like this I can't figure out the relevance of COVID's impact to your family's finances, surely that's as off-topic as it could be? I mean you bought the car before the CV19 situation anyway so?

On the point about the £40,000 tax limit I don't find this particularly upsetting though. For some people, driving the exact car they want is very important, more important than £1,550 spread over 3 years. Similarly in Sweden, the government since a couple of years back decided to punish whoever actually buys new cars and keeps the entire auto business going, by imposing a sort of "new car tax" which for the first 3 years is around 4x times the regular tax that should normally be paid based on the CO2 emission scales. So for my car I have to pay 630 EUR till it's 3 years old, then dropping to 146 EUR per annum... Yet I ordered a brand new Superb because that's what I wanted over an older car exempt from the "new car tax". Also without me and everybody else like me, there would be no nice used Superbs for the Swedish Shy's to buy cheap,  so in a way you owe me (or the British Newbie69's) really... 😄

I must have Scottish ancestors because I'm too tight to spend £455 per year on road tax when my insurance and road tax are only £410. Got 2 free services with the car which is normally only available on new cars here but I have a good relationship with the local dealer having been buying Skoda's new and used from them for more than 15 years. Started with a Mk1 Octavia Vrs then a Mk1 Fabia Vrs which I enjoyed and got hooked on the value of the brand (they were both used). I don't have a problem with anyone buying new and indeed my present car was an ex Skoda HQ Management car and the person that ran it for 6 months looked after it well and from the maxidot I could see they averaged 32mpg and 32mph over 160 hours driving it. A friend of ours bought a nearly new Mercedes in April 2017 after the tax changes that month and because it was just over £40,000 new she has to pay the £455 per year tax until 2022. I told her if she had bought a similar car registered just 1 month earlier on the same 17 plate in March that year she would have paid just £30 per year for road tax as her car has low emissions being a diesel.

Yeah we differ there clearly. Almost every extra I add to my cars (when it's not standard) is a must-have or a deal-breaker for me, just makes the car feel lesser and not right for me what can I say. Which is why I always struggle to find a used car in the spec I like...  But life's really to short to be putting up with compromises all the time. And in the great scheme of things, those little expenses are not what's going to save or break your finances if your overall income-expenses balance is sound. It's more the thought of it (or roots as you say 😄) rather than the actual financial impact that hurts.

Hi Dunc hope you and the family are staying safe. Read a twin test in Auto Express comparing 2017 Kia GTS (365BHP) against 2017 Audi A5 Sportback (349BHP) and your car won as it was more fun and quicker than the heavier German. Hope you're still enjoying it.:wondering:

All good thanks. Still loving the Stinger!

I do remember those VRS posts and they were amusing.

@shyVRS245 do you now also post in the Octavia forums saying how a superb gets similar or better fuel economy ? EVen with AWD and a large heavy chassis?

If you do, I must say, I need to go and check them out when I am bored LOL

Only covered 4,500 miles in the Superb at an average of 38.6mpg. I did 29,000 miles in the lighter, less powerful Octavia and that averaged 40.6mpg. If you read all my posts you will see I neither expected the Superb to use less fuel but more fuel quoting several times that I expected to average 34mpg and get 500 miles per tank based upon 280 owners experiences. It is not my fault that the roads have been empty and free of congestion which kills fuel consumption. It amuses me that people drive slower than me but use more fuel because they have poor commutes driving through towns and cities in a large heavy 4WD car which is not designed for built up areas. Being a longer car the Superb's better aerodynamics compared to the Octavia plus 2 important points the extra 7th gear reduces cruising rpm and the DSG gearbox drops rpm to 800rpm when in Eco mode and you lift for roundabouts and traffic lights saving fuel. Both cars are always run on 99 octane fuel which improves fuel consumption in all tests that I have read and stop/start is always enabled which also saves fuel. My tyres are checked on a regular basis which keeps them at the optimum pressures.

@shyVRS245I have no issues with people wanting to flaunt their cars on the interwebs as it's made for it.

I just find all the man maths and justification amusing so I keep coming back for more. I totally get the justification of paying a bit more in fuel for much more driving pleasure relatively which I also did when I bought my car. But that was a bit low on the requirement as I don't use it to commute so at 5k miles a year, it really doesn't matter as long as it's not doing something ridiculous like 15mpg.

Running cars are generally not cheap due to depreciation so I made sure I got as close as possible to what I wanted when I bought my superb. Not quite @newbie69 level (would love canton and DCC) but I got everything I will not sacrifice. Like you said, if you had just went straight to the 280 from your 1.4, I reckon your numbers would look much better. But we won't get to enjoy the laughs here though.

Also, I checked and you did post in the 245 thread about your 41mpg fuel economy..... Lol.

Whether it was the 245 or the 272 my intention is to demonstrate what power you can expect at the different levels of modification if other members wish to follow a similar path. My intention is to help others not to boast but the internet is very good at twisting good intentions. Newbie69 has shared his experiences with JB4 and suspension upgrades which also benefits other members. On the economy front only a good driver can achieve excellent fuel economy whereas a bad driver will always achieve bad results and boast about poor economy merely demonstrating their bad habits behind the wheel. The points on their driving licence is all the proof you need. Skoda claimed 42.8mpg for my manual 245 whereas I was 2mpg below that figure after 29 months. Skoda claim 39.8mpg for the 7speed DSG whereas I'm only 1mpg below this after just 4 months. According to Skoda the manual 245 should give 3mpg more than the heavier, faster Superb. If I was happy with 268bhp then I would put 99pence Morrison's unleaded in my car but it is more than white goods to me. It may even have feelings.

This is boring beyond belief !

Talking of which, due to current conditions I have switched from mpg to gallons per month.

Is anyone forcing you to read about a modified 272 when you drive the slower 6 speed 280?
