Did you take the ECU from the 1.4 donor car or just roll with the stock 1.2 map and ecu? I've been looking at the CZCA (122 aswell i think) and seeing how that fares, along with MQ350 NJU 6-speed gearbox (which i might put in alongside the 1.2 block if i blow up the gearbox 😂 (i'm getting diff whine under acceleration)

Its currently running with stock mq200 gearbox and the 1.2 ecu, but that ecu is also running the stage3 tune which ruined the last engine, so I'm booking someone to come and put a base map on it to bed the engine in before aiming for similar power from a stage 2 tune.  Might go to rtmg in a year or so when I decide I need more power

Hi guys , waiting for this bad boy to be fitted with a custom airbox ( mst style) :)

Anyways, do you guys know of any compatible turbo blanket ? The only ones i found were compatible with golf gti ,R , S3,Cupra.

(Why turbo blanket? :giggle: Well hotter hot side=quicker spool, and colder cold side=cooler air)

Funk Motorsport say their IS20 blanket fits, it does but there is a bit too much material. I have it, I ditched the rubbish heatsheild/pointless bracket and run it instead. The main bit I put over the hot side, it squidges under the coolant lines and the small part I've put on top of the downpipe. Most of their stuff is on their eBay store with a buy it now kr best offer. They'll accept an offer about 10% off

Mine wasn't even 2nd hand, it was a refurb.... but it still blew up :crying:

Though the reason for the turbo blowing up was a terrible remap from a tuner in Manchester

Meanwhile I'm doing a 1.4 swap on my Fabia.  Initially I was told the engine is a CZDA engine (150bhp) when I picked it up from London, but it turns out its a CXSA (122bhp)

I can't complain too much, as this has made things easier as its just the intake cam with VVT (like the 1.2), rather than both cams.  At the weekend I got the engine in the car and running with a pretty obvious misfire, just needs new plugs and a proper map.  Though I can now say it's the first mk3 fabia to get an engine swap to a 1.4

Skoda beat you to it as they have built both diesel and petrol 1.4 mk3 fabia’s.

I know, but the first unofficial engine swap in the mk3

(Unless someone else beat me to it)

You only knew after being pointed out that it wasn't the first and i hope you declare it to your insurance since you've already got a dangerous driving charge hanging over you after pulling on the handbrake and loosing control in a straight line almost crashing into a crowd of folk.

I'm aware the R5 edition came with a 1.4tsi but its also common knowledge that it was *not* sold in the UK, and I wasn't claiming to have the first 1.4 mk3 ever.  As far as I'm aware, I'm the only non-skoda individual to do an engine swap on the mk3.  (Do I really have to clarify that?)

All mods have been fully declared on a specialist modified car policy since day 1.  Belive it or not, I'm not that stupid.

That day at southport is my biggest regret, but a thread about turbo swaps isn't the place for bringing this up.

Theres a lot I'd like to say about that day, but what I will say is it could have gone much worse and I'm incredibly thankful no one was hurt.

But thanks for bringing that ****show up again, much appreciated

Makes me glad that I was young and reckless before camera phones and Internet immortality of mistakes.

Even then I’m sure post of us didn’t have the urge to pull the handbrake while driving in a straight line going through a crowd of folk :D

maybe in an empty car park in the snow though.

After much difficulty trying to research turbo upgrade options for other members, I decided it's probably worth making some sort of list of turbos that can be bolted straight onto the 1.2 TSI.

See the second post for a quick simple installation guide and other suggestions/advice.

Which Turbo do I want?

For some reason, despite them all being pretty much the same power, and all being used in what's effectively the same chassis, there's about 25 different engine codes and just as many different turbo models. It's quite a mess, so i've tried to organise them here.

It's also just been made aparent that there's some variants (seems like any ACT ones) which use a different style of wastegate actuator, they're also made by a different company and have different turbine designs, they should all provide the same final power, but might have slightly differing boost characteristics.

1.2 TSI Turbos - Standard - The original turbo on your car should be one of these, unless your turbo died, there's no point buying these.

04E 145 721 L

04E 145 713 B

04E 145 713 Q

04E 145 704 T

04E 145 704 L

04E 145 704 N

04E 145 703 Q

1.4 TSI Small Turbos - Avoid - Same size as the 1.2 TSI but with different shaped exhaust housing, you won't see any gains with these.

04E 145 721 E

04E 145 721 R

04E 145 713 N

04E 145 704 F

04E 145 704 R

1.4 TSI Large Turbos - Avoid - Has an additional sensor on the exhaust housing, stay away unless someone confirms it's removable and fits.

04E 145 721 C

04E 145 721 G

1.4 TSI Large Turbos - Avoid - These have a different type of Wastegate actuator, stay away unless someone confirms it works.

04E 145 722 G

04E 145 721 P

04E 145 715 B

04E 145 715 D

04E 145 715 E

04E 145 715 F

1.4 TSI Large Turbos - Best Choice - Matching Wastegate and confirmed working by myself and others.

04E 145 721 B

04E 145 721 F

04E 145 704 C

04E 145 704 P

Purchasing Options

New turbos can be bolted straight on the day it arrives in the post, though they're incredibly expensive and will set you back potentially by more than £600.

Remanufactured/Refurbished turbos are a cheaper alternative for an equally safe purchase, and are also good to bolt on the day it arrives, these go for usually around the £350 mark, sometimes some pop up a bit lower though.

Used turbos are by far the cheapest option, but it's advisable to have it rebuilt. A used turbo will set you back around £100-150, having it rebuilt will cost you around the £100-150 mark, total cost roughly £250.

When purchasing a Used Turbo

If possible, collect it in person before commiting to the purchase so you can inspect it to ensure it is the correct part and that there is no damage. A damaged turbo can still be repaired, but a repair will set you back closer to £250-300.

If there's any damage to either intake compressor or exhaust turbine, or if it does not rotate freely (be very gentle when attempting to spin it, it's very fragile), it's not worth your time or money.

Use brake or carb-cleaner to clean out any oily residue (try not to get it in the oil channels, as you do want oil in those, but cleaning the coolant passageways is fine). But again, do not poke anything in the blades, they are easily damaged!

I'd recommend to check a few turbo refurb companies for rebuild prices, then checking how much you can get hold of a turbo for, both used and refurbed, and proceed from there before actually purchasing anything.

Disclaimer should you choose to install a used turbo without having it rebuilt or at least inspected by a professional:

I advise against doing so, and I shall NOT take any responsibility for any damages incurred by YOUR actions.

Turbos spin sometimes upwards of 250,000 RPM, the slightest of imbalance from any kind of damage, can result in catastrophic failure!

This could potentially send metal shards through your engine, completely ruining your engine too! Just get it rebuilt already!!!

I was wondering  if the big turbos will fit on my 1.2 tsi vw beetle which is only 105 bhp ?

That part number is for a charge cooler from the EA111 1.2TSI, Code CBZC. Unfortunately none of this helps thread helps you.

Howver JBS Auto Designs in Chesterfield does make a Hybrid Turbo for that engine capable of 180-190bhp, so there's that.

Thanks for the info , I only want to do the mod as it quiet cheap to buy a used turbo , are you saying that none of the bigger turbos will fit or is it a compatibility issue ?

No, we have the newer EA211 1.2 TSI, you have the older EA111 1.2 TFSI. They won't fit.

Easiest way is the turbo location, EA111 has the turbo at the front of the engine bay and the EA211 has the turbo at the back of the engine bay

No turbo as the turbos listed on this forum seem to be for EA211 engines , I am looking for a turbo that is compatible with my 1.2 EA111 engine ,if you can point me to any threads that cover this that would be helpful
