DPF on or off ?

Hi all, I've posted a few things here about my most excellent Roomster 2.0TDi somewhere within here in the past....

Today I speak of my Yeti L+K 2.0TDi (2016) bought in July 1st 2020. It's Euro6 compliant and I live in Crouch End, North London (that's where the problems start)

COVID has affected us all and I extend a heartfelt sympathy to those that have lost close ones to this awful thing.

Those of us with these sort of cars that need a flogging from time to time are in a pickle. My lovely nearly new car (sub 40k miles) choked itself to death ...almost.

I paid £300 for a very fast service to unblock my cars Butt, I learned much. My question is why my car fails to tell me when it needs a whopping big hot FART ?

There is no caution to warn me early of a problem, only the three lights of the Apocalypse (DPF, Engine and "I'm Dead").

I'll keep it short, been a long day, last few times I've warmed the engine driving to Brent Cross in traffic (temp dial reaches 90...balanced) then hit M1 in Sport DSG and flog until Scratchwood (called summat else now)

I noticed at least 3 times at different days, the temp gauge quickly moves to 110C for 20+ seconds then drops back to 90 no matter what I do, either in full auto or semi.

I tried plugging monitoring things in the engine thingy but it's a bit dodgy at 90mph (JOKE !!)

I ask myself did I buy a nice car to drive or perform open heart surgery every time I drive it ? A simple light to say "Flog me baby !" every so often and not a "you're choking me to death !" light to give me some indication.

My point being, the temp needle rises to 110 for 20+ seconds when I stomp my Prosthetic hard down (yes, I'm disabled, right leg lower amp)   and the whole deal is done with one cautionary note....

The DPF sensor often shows "over volatage" by 1V ....the part number is 03L 906 051B. Hope someone finds this useful....keep safe folks.... G

There is nothing to warn you of if your journeys are long enough to allow the regenerations to take place without interruption, otherwise you are warned to drive for 10-15 minutes at 2.5k rpm or whatever to allow it to do its stuff.

If you were regularly doing fast road journeys there would be more passive regeneration but the active ones would still happen just with less frequency.

There is nothing to be gained by the vehicle telling you that its approaching an active regen and to go for a long high speed journey presuming that is what you mean by a hot fart, that sort of forced passive regen will not do as much good as the programmed active one.

The only advice I can give you is to keep an eye on your tickover speed, if it seems increased open a window & see if you can hear the radiator fans running, if so then keep driving until it has done its stuff, if you switch off & realise the fans are running try to go out for a drive to let the process complete or if you know that your next journey or one you will do soon will allow a regen then dont bother.

I would like to know how often my is currently regenning, I can see from VCDS how many kms have been done since the last one and since the lockdowns it has never been more than 200 miles but unless I do scans regularly and note the mileages I cant actually know that for sure, and in any case if I do know the frequency I can do nothing about it other than to decide to change to a petrol vehicle.

What on earth are you talking about?

I certainly need a translation for this posting.

As has been said I was trying to help and I had directly answered your question - My question is why my car fails to tell me when it needs a whopping big hot FART ?

I dont think the country that you or I drive our cars in has any relevance to your request, the journey profile will.

If the coolant temperature gauge is above 90'C, I'd say you have a problem. The gauge doesn't tell you the true temperature so any time it's above 90'C means something is wrong unless you're putting massive load on the engine for a sustained period of time. Seems very unlikely in or around Crouch End during Winter to produce that kind of load.

A DPF issue shouldn't cause three warning lights immediately, first you should get a single 'DPF' light showing. At this point you should do a regeneration drive (not a flogging), as described in the owners manual. If you never had only the DPF light showing, then you may have another problem.

You also mention a DPF sensor over voltage? That could cause DPF issues too although you've not mentioned which sensor.

Might be worth finding a VAG/Skoda specialist who knows about DPF systems to check the car over. Certainly feels like the DPF blockage is a symptom of an actual problem rather than just London driving.

Just had my car DPF Regen issue sorted by a local garage...after much head scratching. I had DPF, MIL and Glow Plug lamp flashing with the car refusing to regen even when i commanded Service Mode driving regen using an OBDEleven.

The preconditions were not being met as the pre-turbo temp sensor output was erratic, and the DPF Diff pressure sensor was defective.

To be fair they did have the car since 24th Dec and only charged me 3 hours labour and £180 for sensors. £500  in total but did stop the DPF becoming completely Ash blocked

That verges on unreadable and rude, I suggest you read JRs helpful post again, sort your above post, your details say you live in London but the post above must mean very new there.

My UK neighbour with a 2013 Octavia has just had a similar experience, one of the sensors had an intermittent fault and when it manifested it would take down the 5v bus and throw fault codes from multiple sensors, they tried disconnecting sensors etc one at a time if the engine would still run without them, the EGR was one and if it didn't drop out again going into limp mode that one would be excluded, they changed the throttle valve & then refitted the original, finally it was the DPF differential pressure sensor which was my hunch.

I know this independant garage and have reasonable faith in what they say, they are not bull****ters and dont play parts bingo as can be seen although I had my doubts when they started talking of sending of the ECU to be reconditioned.

Dissapointing that the failure mode of a sensor could pull down the others and not be indicated as one single fault code, perhaps someone with a wiring diagram to hand can confirm that they are all powered from a common 5V output, I dont take anything as siad these days, someone I know's BMW X3 would not start one morning, been driving perfectly then next day cranking but no combustion, sounds like fuel but after 2 months the local French garage now says that there is no compression on 2 cylinders and it needs a new engine. Sounds a crock of brown stuff to me, I know of someone else who put an X5 in for a cambelt change and by complete coincidence all the valves bent when they started it

I have absolutely know idea what any of that meant. I can only assume English isn't his first language?

The part number of the sensor referred to by the OP is indeed the differential pressure sensor.  A common problem area I think; probably to do with it having to work with some pretty toasty gases.

I suspect the OP may have been 'at altitude' during last night's postings. May explain why he thought he was producing something of great clarity and insight, and the rest of us are 'yet to appreciate the brilliance'...

Got as far as reading this and thought b0llocks.

I tried a number of times to make some kind of sense of it, breaking it into smaller chunks, placing commas and full stops etc......but then I gave up too.

He's not logged on since then, I suspect it's like as kids knocking on a door and running to see the resulting reaction.

Nice to see the solidarité of so many "not helpfull" votes, 11 at the last count and not a single positive one.

And a special thankyou to those amongst them who may have awarded me more than the occasional unhelpfull vote in the past

I am unsure whether you two have done that in a humorous manner or otherwise.

Perhaps I did not express myself correctly, those who have a problem with someones posting style can frequently give unhelpfull votes to that person, I get that and understand that it may be justified, however if they post likes when someone is trolling or abusing that person that is a poor show in my view and I'm glad to say has not happened (to me) on this forum.

I was trying to show my genuine appreciation and respect for someone (without naming) who in the past has been an active contributor to my small collection of "not helpfull" votes, after seeing that they were to be among those denouncing the "altitude" poster.

Thankyou to you both, I wasn't aware that my posting could have been read as asking for more "not helpfulls" but in your place were I able to make it sound like that then I would have done the same!

So to return the compliment I have thanked you both and will now remove the thanks :D
