Im interested in buying a used First edition but am worried about the software issues,  How many FE owners here have managed to get their car updated to 1896 ?.

I'm hoping that when I get my car back tomorrow that it's updated to 1896. I've asked the dealer to provide me with details of what software has been updated and what hardware components they have replaced.

The frustration for me is that many of the issues being raised on the forum are being experienced by many owners, of all model variants of the Octavia, not just the First Edition. From what I've read Skoda do not have the ability to send these bigger software updates over the air, so it seems it does require owners to make contact with their dealer.  Owners then go to their local dealer and explain the issue, and that seems to be where problems start. In my case in April, the dealer said they spoke to Skoda direct who said there were no issues with the Matrix lights, when their clearly are, and a member on this forum was an early adopter of new software aimed at stopping dazzling oncoming cars. Software 1810 was available at that time, but they did not update the car to it. So I don't know if it depends how the symptoms are explained when they call Skoda or if the technician is searching a database. However, it seems to me if they don't ask the question or carry out the right search they can get differing answers back.

It's a shame because I really do like my FE. It's got a nice amount of kit, the 1.5 petrol I've got is more responsive than I expected it to be (my previous car was a 2.0 petrol Octavia vRS), and it's a very nice car to drive. The software is really letting down a fantastic car.

To me I think they need to start distributing these bigger updates to the cars over the air, so more cars are automatically on the later releases of software. Skoda may find that this reduces the number of calls to dealer service departments...

  • It also seems to be a complete lottery with the dealer service departments. My car went in for a whole week. When I picked it up I was told everything was fixed, but they could not provide any detail

  • It's because when they start showing the flaws, they will loose access to cars, and probably some advert income. Simple as that

  • Actually i'm not sure if new module is needed. I got some OTA few weeks ago, and since that time i haven't had a single "pop pop" or disconnection. So either it was magically fixed by itself, i w

Not a First Edition but an SEL delivered in Oct 2020 - currently on 1896.

After 3 visits to the dealership to rectify the sos issue it has finally been resolved. Not had the popping sound nor the dialling sos for a week now. The first 2 visits I asked them to update the software to the latest version but they decided to investigate other issues even though everyone knows what the solution is! Anyway the software has been updated and hopefully I can enjoy driving the car.

My VRS was updated on the fourth visit to the dealers on 9th Sept. No issues since and no popping noise. Let’s just hope Skoda have finally resolved this problem.

Yes and it works well on this version.

I am on 1896.

Does anyone know if the issues with the Matrix lights blinding oncoming drivers are fixed in 1896, or is that a separate software component?

So I picked up my car this morning… the software is still at 1668 and the service agent can’t actually tell me about any work they’ve done.

Same happened to me on two visits to the dealership. Everyone knows the software needs updating except the dealer apparently! As you mentioned they couldn’t tell me what work they had actually done. Anyway after the third visit the software was updated and now everything seems fine.

My car was in last Thursday for a service and software update and so far, no pop pop and everything still working ok 😊

Hi... do you know if your software was updated to 1896?

Yes it's now on 1896

Not sure if this helps, I have SW 1898 and the oncoming drivers have blinked 2 times in over 3 weeks of owning the car

My car also has just had the 1896 software update. I find I have cars flashing me.

Had mine into the local dealer today to fix the pop pop, said they "updated the software" but all these values are showing the same time as before. You reckon I'll be back to the garage to get them to update it properly soon? Seems like 1896 is  the solver of the pop pop and without it the problem persists.

What they don't seem to realise is that they need to raise the software levels of several things at the same.

I suspect they updated your OCU (device for communication) and didn't apply the firmware for the infotainment unit.

Another journey needed for you once more @HighlandBoy

 What an absolute faff!

It also seems to be a complete lottery with the dealer service departments. My car went in for a whole week. When I picked it up I was told everything was fixed, but they could not provide any detail behind the work they did. They promised to contact me a few days later with that detail, but despite follow up from me they still have not provided it. In reality, nothing has been fixed.

I'm not sure why Skoda are not directing dealers to upgrade everything on these Octavias to get them to a standard baseline of software component versions. To me it would make their lives easier going forward.

Got mine in at Skoda Bradford on the 19th. Happening to me all to frequent now. Getting the Loading settings message pop up now when the SOS fault icon appears. didnt before so lived with it. But it locks you out of using the screen.

Hi all,

Today appeared in my octavia IV (manufactured in 06/2021) the SOS fault, Park Assist fault, and the biggest problem, the infotainment is off. If I try to turn on pressing 7 or 8 seconds, he turn on and enter in cycle, turning on and off, and finnaly became off again.

I cant choose between hybrid/electric, using AC, radio, nothing... Because the infotainment stays off.

Anyone with similar problem? I booked with my dealership this week to diagnose the problem.

The car has 7k km.

I've only had the sos issue since my car was updated to 1896, so that alone does not fix the problem. Its booked into the dealer next month so I'll see if they fix it. It seems to happen in the same locations regularly and when it does the car Internet connection drops, the globe on the screen disappears,  could be an issue with the sim?  It also looks to cause other issues like losing user settings, stuck on loading settings and also the mode and Clima physical buttons not responding.

I had the same issues about a year ago and they had to change the head unit on mine and they said it was a known fix. By luck that also allowed my car to get the latest software which apparently it would not accept if it still had the old head unit in (2020 car).

I received a call from the dealer today, and they will replace the head unit. The problem is that they have to order that head unit and can take 2-3 weeks to arrive...

Mine is a 2020 First Edition. It has been updated to 1866 but Pop Pop and SOS still happen regularly. A new part is being fitted soon and I was told that it is a big job as it needs to be fitted behind the driver’s dashboard (it did take 3 weeks to order the part but well beyond that for the next available fitting-appointment). The Service Department didn’t use the name ‘ Head Unit’ which I would have recognised. Can’t remember exactly but the name was the …’something? Control Unit’. I guess this is the Head Unit. Is there anything else it could be?

Did you mean 1896 verision?

Odds are it will be the OCU = Onboard Communication Unit that you might be referring to here.
