Software failure not so Superb

I agree we should not be quality control , especially as Skoda like to boast how good their quality control is. Can't help with your questions I am afraid as I have a petrol.

  • Hello from Latvia! I also bought a Škoda Superb L&K 2.0TSI 4x4 (delivered in May 2024). Everything was fine until October 2024 (I drove around 5000 km at that point). I got 7 warnings related to

  • My wife's Superb was updated a week ago on 2nd December and there have been no problems since. She drove 320 miles at the weekend and all was well.   She's finally starting to enjoy the car

  • I got my car back yesterday,  33 miles on, no problems.  I know that is not far, but went wrong after 10 miles when I got it . So, let's hope,  fingers crossed!

2 weeks since I collected my SEL PHEV estate.

As mentioned previously, the day before I collected the car I asked the dealership to check the latest SW was installed, and it was.

On collection they told me the Map switch across to the drivers display was not working and they were waiting for an update. A little annoyed as during my test run of a PHEV Kodiaq I accidentally did the switch and it just said map loading. I explained this when I finished the test drive to the salesman whose car it was and was told, "dont worry". Thought I had somehow caused it. Would have preferred they just came clean on this.

On second day of ownership several warning lights appeared. Contacted dealer who wanted the car returned. Having read this thread I decided to wait and see if it cleared. After a short run and a restart it was all back to normal. I have seen the odd "front collision" symbol at start up but it soon goes - frosty morning...perhaps.

First attempt at charging was on a frosty morning - charge flap wouldn't open. There is no manual release for this. After several attempts lightly hitting the flap it opened - frozen perhaps - how would it work in Scandinavian countries?? Problem not reappeared. Also had the charge plug lock in. There is a manual release - best of luck getting to it! Involves removing plastic shroud over width of car below the windscreen wipers and then says take car to dealer.  Locked/unlocked the car several times and it came free.

Otherwise car has been free of troubles and I'm enjoying it. Still to work out and set all the many functions but doing it gradually.

I see some have cured problems by charging the 12v battery. I am hoping this won't be necessary as on my previous car, C5 phev, if the car wasn't used for three days issues would arise, no keyless operation, no pure EV mode etc. Found I had to charge the 12v battery weekly to stop this. Citroen I discovered had even put an additional 12v battery in the boot, probably to overcome this. I have read somewhere that when charging the Superb EV battery the 12v battery is charged as well. Cant remember where I saw this - possibly in the hdbk. Hoping this is the case as it makes a lot of sense.

Can anyone tell me where the 12v battery is on the PHEV model, I have yet to do a thorough search but pretty sure its not under the bonnet - no space (unless its buried ) and the hdbk says there are terminals under the bonnet should the battery need charging.

It is concerning when virtually all new cars with so much technology are delivered with problems. The customer should not be the last Quality Control stage.

I'm writing from a Scandinavian region, near Gothenburg. It's probably harsher up north, but here it's not too bad. For example, I've been driving on summer tires for a week as an experiment, and so far, no issues—it's currently +2 C outside.

My wife drives an ID.3, and once, the charging port cover froze shut on her. Similarly, in my previous Kodiaq, the fuel filler door froze a couple of times in memorable situations.

Honestly, I'm not sure how wise it is for Škoda to mount the ice scraper right on the charging port cover. If it freezes seriously, that cover will be the first to get stuck. And since the whole thing is plastic, it's not something you'd want to force too much—it feels like it can break easily.

.

I don’t like the over-engineering of cars either, and it would be great if the "smart features" of the Superb could be permanently disabled—at least if the manufacturer can't make them at least 99% reliable. For example, I would completely turn off the traffic sign recognition system, along with the speed limit warning. As I see for example, the Skoda cant deal with this special/residential zone sign speed limits in Sweden:  images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS8X0_SIeoI7EvkN79tDXb , cant identify the traffic signs from light: Vehicle Activated Sign – Highway Markings, etc, etc, etc

Edited by DinyaZ

When mine froze it was +2C but with a wind chill taking down to -3C

Ny traffic sign recognition sometimes get wrong - had this same problem on previous 2 cars. All this talk of cars being forced to stick to speed limits is not going to work if they rely on Traffic signs and/or GPS.

Will raise battery location as a separate thread

The issue regarding the maps not loading on the instrument cluster is a know fault by Skoda, there is no fix yet released for this yet.

Regarding the 12v battery it is the same for PHEV and BEVs and charging the high voltage battery should also keep the 12v battery charged.

On the new Kodiaq PHEV the 12 battery is located in the rear left behind a cover that you have to pull off, just held on by clips.

Thanks - I was aware of Map issue, see prior posts.

Battery must be in a different place on the Superb estate.

On my left-hand-drive Superb IV PHEV the battery is behind a panel in the boot on the left. Very similar to the photo above of the Kodiaq. Just unclip the panel and you can access the battery. (I have one time disconnected the battery to force a 'system-reset' when I was getting all the assistance system warning messages. Since I did that, the warning messages have not returned.)

By the way, if there's frost on the car, you need to clean two areas to avoid warnings: Completely clear the glass section in front of the camera at the top of the windshield. AND the most important, clean the opening of the camera on the radar box in the center of the grille. If both are cleaned, there will be no warnings on a frosty morning.

I have the L&K PHEV estate and the 12 v battery is behind a cover in the boot on the left side.

Found it thanks. Now facing more serious problems - see "no electric drive" thread.

Generally positive results with mine. It's near on 2 months now since the fix update and nothing outrageous to report, nearly nothing at all. 4k on the clock now. A pity the honeymoon period was compromised, but it was parked in the winter sun the other day and I got in to a fresh bloom of new car smell. Which was nice.

Ive thought about writing a longer review at some point, the good and the bad (good is winning comfortably, I reckon). I did have a phantom triggering of the crash function, but that's only happened once. Maybe its a feature? So if you are about to very imminently get totalled by a white van man then you, have at the least, already experienced the cars preemptive safety functions? Maybe?!

Clarity

Pretty much the same here. After a slew of assist-function warnings in week 1, now 2 months in witth 4k Kms on the odometer and nothing untoward. An occasional error warning when I switch on that clears immediately and the emergency brake triggered twice without cause.

Very happy with the car.

New to Skoda and new to the forum.

Picked up my L&K Diesel just before new-year, and said goodbye to my Tiguan Allspace.  It was quite a quick decision, as I was considering swapping to a Passat, but (I think) I got a much better deal on the Superb.

I was not expecting to need to take the car back to the dealer this soon, I had not done my research.  Anyway the 91SV service campaign completed last week, and to be fair the dealer arranged it without too much impact.

What I did not get was what this update was for, and also I got worried when they said that sometimes they take 2 days to do the update. (Mine apparently went through without issues in a couple of hours)

If it was to remove the driving assistant error messages, then it has not done much.  Before the update I would get occasional error messages.  Now in my Tiguan it would get the same, but the Tiguan would ask  to clean the windscreen, which generally removed the error.  So I  have applied the same with my Superb, which did the trick.  Not so much this morning (after the update), as I got more yellow warnings than ever before.  They all disappeared after 3-4 minutes though.  I hope it's not a trend.

Trying to find out what the 91SV update actually is for, and assuming it is related to this thread?  Can anyone confirm?

I have not noticed any difference to anything yet.

Now I'm quite happy with the car so far, and it should meet my needs quite well I think, Although it's not completely without regret as the SUV had some benefits that I'm so used to that I have forgotten. But I guess you can't have everything.

yes that’s the update for the assist errors many of us have encountered. Mine has had the update done twice now but the error messages, whilst reduced, still keep occurring.

All traffic signs, speed limits, driver fatigue or lane assist etc. system are mandatory by EU and need to be always enabled why starting the car.

No option to skip that.

The issue is that there is no option in VAG like in other brands that you can toggle off multiple assistants by holding a particular steering or lever button or touch one option in infotainment.

It is annoying having to turn off the various assists but not too difficult with shortcuts. Some assists are positively dangerous, lane keeping on narrow roads for ex.

I think the bigger issue will come when insurance companies refuse to pay out after an accident because the assists have been turned off or they are not working due to grime on the sensors. Has this been tested yet?

Assistants themselves are not necessary, that's why you can turn them off. EU decided that it would be safer in general statistics to require them on with every engine start.

Insurance companies, if that would be real, would approve and deny claims based on your performance regarding the various road laws. If you overtake on single/double solid line they you break the law intentionally anyway and it doesn't matter if you have older car or new one with assistant turned off.

The various assistants in the car are still just supporting systems and manufacturers I form you in the warranty or license that it's your responsibility to drive, even when assistant doesn't work as intended.

Well my car has the same issues. I bought the car in Oct 2024. Issues started in December. Car was already at the dealership fot 2 days 2 weeks ago. Car worked fine for a week. Its back at the dealership (now 2 days-no information so far). I read a looot about Skoda issues and I must say I am afraid the car cannot be fixed eince dealership guaranteed me that the car was 100% fixed the first time it was there.

Don't buy the car. 50k € car and it doesn't work. Because of the faults it also didn't start in the past so totally unreliable.

Since introduction of Golf8 and Octavia 4 and the new infotainment, VAG has a really buggy system and nothing can be done. Facelift of G8, O4, release of new Passat B9 and Superb 4 introduced another newer infotainment system and it seems less buggy but also not finished in 100%.

VW service told me that the more electronic features you order with the car (assistants, 360 camera etc.) the higher the chance you will encounter errors.

Also, cars manufactured before autumn/winter are more prone to issues and even new updates do not always work as intended. Later manufactured cars should be statistically more stable but still not perfect.

Unfortunately system in VAG in last year's is at most an average quality in all of their brands beside Audi, not counting the new infotainment in new A5, Q6 etc.

I think it could be reasonably described as a lottery, what you will get from VAG these days.

Picked up my L&K from the dealer today. They assured me it had the latest software available. Fingers crossed🤞🏼

I picked up my SE L four days ago and had the same software version. Unfortunately driver assist errors appeared on the drive home from the garage and now all assist systems are unavailable.

I took it into the garage yesterday. Was told they applied a ‘short term fix’ but a permanent solution has not been made available by Škoda. The short term fix made no difference, with assist systems still unavailable. They hadn’t heard of the software update mentioned earlier in earlier replies.

Has anyone attempted to return or replace their car? As the issue has been reported for around a year (?) and a fix hasn’t been deployed by Škoda I am skeptical this will ever be completely fixed.

I  already asked about this option and they said that they will fix it since there is not one car that hasn't been fixed yet (?!🤣).

In my country the car has to be at the dealership for 45days combined (it isn't necessary to be continuously). My car has been there for 5 days until today. I will definitely asked about progress.

Bit yeah, I want my money back

If anybody expects 100% bug free car in terms of electronics and infotainment from VAG then I really suggest to get back money and choose different cars.

Even if you will have a "good" car there will always be some a small thing once or couple of times a year like blind spot LED blinking for no reason while driving empty road, SOS unavailable, infotainment hang, wireless AA or Carplay issue, travel or radar bug notification even with clean sensors and camera etc.

So my local dealer has tried three times to fix the errors. I contacted the MD and the Exec office have been liaising with me. To reject the car within 6 months (UK) the original retailing dealer has to be given a chance to fix it. So mine has been with the original dealer for a week now. They can see the error logs and have been liaising with Skoda but are just giving the car a drive each say to see the errors for them selves. I'm waiting for a call today. I have two weeks to reject within the 6 months but I feel as though they are going to say that as they can't replicate the errors I can't reject it.
