  3. Still plodding away doing little bits as and when I get chance, been mad busy with work so the cars just tucked away under cover in the garage, however... I’d had discussions with James at Bold Hydrographics about doing a custom engine cover so I purchased an early ATD TDi one, stripped it down and took it to him. The plan was to fully smooth the cover, getting rid of the hundreds of circular indentations in it and then dipping in the same stealth carbon as all the other bits. James started by gently blasting the cover in his blasting cabinet with some walnut shell media, this ensures all the holes are clean from dirt, grease, oil, silicone etc. Lots of prep work involved in filling the holes, he uses the same carbon reinforcing filler that is used in plastic bumper repairs.. once this was done, two good coats of 2k flexible primer, sanded in between and after.. Then two coats of satin black... Dipped then multiple coats of tinted hi gloss lacquer... Baked at gas mark 2 in the booth over night then wet sanded and machine polished up. My Sprint Yellow insert was fitted when I picked it up tonight.. Yet again blown away by how it looks. I’m In the process of doing a custom air box lid which is a messy laborious process, I’ll get more pics of that up soon.

  4. After months of procrastination I finally bit the bullet and ordered a 272 today. I got the Sportline Plus in Meteor Grey, with Park assist, Virtual cockpit, Variable boot floor, Spare tyre, Traffic sign recognition and Boot Access Rear Seat release (latter 2 got after haggling around another £200 off). I didn't get DCC or Canton as it would have pushed it over another £1k. Looking forward to March!

  5. Stick it on the normal setting. As far as I've read, you don't need a higher voltage to fully charge an EFB or AGM battery, it's just that you can use a higher voltage to charge them faster without them going pop, subject to the temperature not being/getting too high. So stick it on the normal setting and leave it for a generous time.

  6. You can set it to whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you want. Obviously the different settings come with trade offs - soft will ride more comfortably but will result in more body roll for example.

  7. Standard VRS is firm but not uncomfortable, so I would expect DCC to be more than acceptable for normal use.

  8. On a related subject, it’s often worth checking the inside sidewall of tyres for wear/bulges periodically. Speed tables (ie the speed humps which are like pimples in the middle of the lane as opposed to stretching the entire width) are known to cause wear on the inner edges of tyres as you - perhaps naturally - straddle them and there have been instances of tyres failing at speed due to wear that hasn’t been evident from the outside. The general advice seems to be not to straddle these things but to approach them with one wheel on and one off, therefore avoiding wear. This does make for less comfortable progress but at least you won’t be causing potential problems for yourself. Dave.

When I picked my car up the dealer told me about there top up service no appointment needed will do wile you wait and no labour they charge £1.25 ltr it’s a no brainer not worth buying the fluid and pouring in your self but as said put around 6 ltrs in and that will keep you going but if not filling all the way you will be topping up more often

  18. Mine got the £99 oil service by Vantage Morecambe last month and it was spot on. They offered to wash and vac (which I declined) even though it wasn't listed on the website, and they also did the free "health check" where you get the video sent to you. No made up additional work as being "required" just the £99 and job done. Fantastic. All the filters are dead easy and cheap to do. The only one I won't do myself is spark plugs so I'll just ask for that as an extra cost item. Should still workout cheaper than the major service all in.

  19. It’s kind of a grey area as described above. I don’t bother getting the major service done as it’s all checks apart from the fuel filter and I’ll either have TPS supply one for me to fit or leave it in the car for the dealer to fit and I’m charged £15 on top of the minor service cost. Air filter is also missing from the minor service but I asked nicely last time and the dealer chucked one on for free. At the moment they are doing a basic oil change for £99 which I’m tempted by as the car doesn’t need a wash by them, doesn’t need a test drive (their test drive is down from the VW building where the workshop is to the Skoda building anyway), doesn’t need software updates, doesn’t need a pollen filter, and I know about every defect it has and it’s funny how it came back with no advisories on the MoT despite the last health check (done before the MoT) showing some items that need changing. They don’t. I’ll probably go for that and have the air filter and fuel filter done and will work out cheaper than a major service, but be exactly the same lol

  20. The published pricing only applies to cars over 3 years old and on the fixed servicing regime. It also requires dealer participation (most do). Dealers are free to charge lower but not higher if a participant in the fixed price servicing scheme.

  21. Surrey does have some awful roads (the Government allocates funds based on miles of roads , not vehicle numbers), and there are hardly any good driving roads in the area that are little used with long sweeping bends etc. A lot depends on what you want the car for, some of the comments so far seem to have given ride quality for the driver, and completely ignored any passengers. If you have family I would suggest looking at new 190, but ultimately which is better (and better value) will depend on your overall spec priority. As always divide options into 3, those you want and would miss if not there, those you don’t really care about, and a middle group. Only pay for first group, middle group only include if package with them is better value, and group 3 are wasted money if you get them. This may affect a decision between SEL and VRS

  23. Just an update on the above statement on the Ring bulbs. Although they are in my opinion a great bulb for extra light output, they don't really last that much longer than other upgraded bulbs. Just had one blow today. Mind you, I like them so much, I have fitted another set of Ring H7 bulbs to replace them.

  25. I had 24 rolls of grass in the boot of my Octavia in summer from BQ. Granted it was only 1.5miles away from my home otherwise I’d have done more trips to save the suspension. If spread evenly it shouldn’t mess your car up, especially when you think you could be driving around daily with 3x 20 stone kids in the back thanks to the childhood obesity crisis

  26. Thank you. I did a bit more greasing of the 4 hinges of the panoramic roof and in front: right at the rounded corners there are two ... metal things perhaps they are receptables for the roof. I greased these with white lithium spray too. The rattle appears to be gone or at least much less noticeable, but I am not sure why and how.

  28. It can become addictive. Like I posted, I have been round 40 times and it scares me every time. It is very narrow, the elevation changes really unsettle the car at speed and many of the corners are blind. A smooth drive is the key, no braking once entering a corner, don't lift off in a corner, trust the car, and as stated above, drive within your limits. Knowledge of the track is key. I changed my pads for EBC Bluestuff on the fronts and Yellows on the rear. That gave me a good balance.

  29. You are correct about the Turkish spec, infant. We have received some Turkish spec. cars here, as there was a surplus of vehicles destined for Turkey, which did not sell due to currency difficulties. I looked at them at the dealer, and they did not have the same equipment as the ones originally destined for DK. This also included different wheel and tyre specifications, as my original wheels were used to equip a car originally destined for Turkey. Each country market negotiates pricing and detailed spec with the factory, so a "Style" version is not identical in all markets. DK was only assigned a very limited number of both Karoq and Kodiak vehicles, so the decision from the Danish importer was apparently to only sell the high end and very fully specced cars, as they could sell them as a high quality priced alternative to Quashcai as an example.

  32. You should always be checking the inside tyre walls because the damage can easily be there and no visible damage to rim or tyre on the outside as you look at a car, or jack up and spin wheels. & If you do not ask you do not get. If it is not the Council that has to pay out but those with the Maintenance Contract and responsible for the checks and timely repairs then get the pictures if you can be bothered. Councils and contractors so tax payers pay out millions every year so people do get compensated. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/272686-motorway-blowout-2-tyres-wrecked-everygreens-fitted-oh-dear

Some of us note that the benefits which will acrew from the Brexit win don’t seem to be listed anywhere, dubious ones aside of course. There are some in Europe who genuinely fear Putin and his plans for expansion. Eg - the Baltic States, Finland and Sweden not to mention the Ukraine......Poland......again? 35. I thought I would pay homage to my favorite thread by way of an update at just under two weeks of ownership. Ultimately it was probably the comments, advice and contributions of others here that influenced the decision to purchase - cheers . In some ways its slightly fraudulent posting here, what with a poverty-spec 272PS, however a separate thread would just not have the same ring to it! I originally ordered a Sportline Estate (in business grey with DCC, Canton, Heated seats & windscreen and variable floor), way back in April and (very) patiently waited for the WLTP shenanigans to sort themselves out. I ended up with 272ps instead of 280, but gained an extra 7th gear. I also lost the Columbus but was re-reimbursed for the differential in spec between pre-plus Sportline and the current offering. This didn't upset me too much as it covered the cost of the 1st years insurance - sweet! Overall I am very happy, it has just the right level of performance, space, comfort that I was after, and am glad I chose this over the VRS and a used Audi A6 that nearly was. I'm now just under 1K miles in, a good chunk of which were spent driving back to Scotland from Hampshire. I didn't really get to give it the good variable run-in back as intended, principally due to the utter carnage of the current works on the M6. How anyone can put up with that on a daily basis I have no idea. By the time I got to a 'drivers road' (i.e. Lancaster), it was getting dark, I was knackered from lack of sleep (pre-pickup excitement) so it got the motorway treatment most of the way, albeit I did try to vary as much as possible. Some thoughts thus far: Power delivery is very nice, well balanced and will allow SWMBO to drive it without fear of planting it in a ditch. Hopefully. I've yet to fully give it the beans, a combination of restraint during run-in, it's been p!ssing down every day since I have had it, and fear of loss of license such is the pickup of speed once approaching 5K rpm. It is a fast car. The Pirelli P7's are cr@p as everyone has already alluded to, despite wanting to believe otherwise, however economics dictate they will have to stay on until next year. I am inclined towards a winter wheel setup, more influenced by my likely lack of ability to keep on top of the Vegas during the colder months than outright tyre performance. Must try harder. I'm not quite over the MPG shock yet, despite knowing it was coming. Long term is 29-30, but it has been cold and I do a reasonable amount of shorter local journeys during the week. Shell v-power is quite pricey at the moment Still getting used to the DCC but am using Comfort around the city which is great as our roads are pretty bad. It is subtle, but effective, and am glad I specced it. The ACC is amazeballs, I've not used it before and it took a lot of confidence to allow it to fully stop the car to a halt, however it is effortless when stuck in slow moving traffic. The interior LED light strips seem to provide endless amusement to the kids, i keep seeing little hands appearing next to the Mode button. A remote to change just the lights would be ideal please Santa. It's a handsome looking thing, I wasn't quite sure on the rear originally, but am now smitten... The seats, oh the seats, these are very nice, albeit my kids are not so impressed with slight loss of visibility in the rear - to be honest I didn't even consider this before! Still adjusting to stop-start / hill hold combo when around town / at junctions. Mrs Chas is not yet ready for this level of information. it might put her off driving it of course which would be a bonus. The Canton is very good, again glad I chose this. I've so far fitted some mud-flaps (great guide @dubzter) , rubber mats and tunnel courtesy of SuperSkoda. Next up are my roof bars, just waiting for new Whispbar feet on order. I have bought a 'snow-foam lance' and some 'detailing products' (i.e. cloths). This has opened a whole new world. Changed days from firing through the local roller wash.. I keep finding reasons to go for a drive, however I'm not sure you actually need one such is the smile factor. On that note, I'm off out for bit whilst its not raining! Thanks again folks!

  37. Many in 2012 were not getting '34F7' because there were filled with mineral oil from the factory and they were not getting '34H5' either. @Sittingbull knows of ones like that that had the 'white spanner warning' or are failing now. He can maybe tell you numbers that just he hears about of has communicated with owners of ones like that. Not all DQ200 with Mineral Oil in from 2013-2015 needed the software update. There were certain ones that were given the update as a preventative measure because of failures. Skoda produce 2,200 DQ200 a day and they are for 48 applications. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/425424-2017-another-dq200-7-speed-dsg-service-campaign

  38. @Nortonpuch Not all 2010-2012/13 CAVE or CTHE needed '34F7', @Sittingbull's wifes did not and that is one that had the 'white spanner' warning. Then '34H5' is from 2013-2015 and not all DQ200 need that. But then Skoda / VW is as sketchy on that as they are on '34F7'.

  39. Who is McLeod, where is he? he might come looking for me before I go looking for him. The Fabia sits on the drive, I have beaten DVSA into divulging what they did to agree to VAG's intentions, which was very little, no wonder I had to appeal the DVSA FOI first response. From the appeal, I can confirm that my car has neither of the service recalls completed, and it has been owned by me since new and been serviced by the same crap Skoda dealer that sold it to me. It should at lest have one of them!! but then they and SUk don't seem to be able to figure that one out for a 2012 car. I did enquire with TPS about a new mechatronic unit and they said that the skoda dealer had queried if they held one, it was a surprise as they said that the dealer did not have all the equipment to replace and program the unit once fitted. It would appear that the local VW dealer was going to do it, as SUK admitted not all Skoda dealers can do all the work needed. Much like VAG's ACC radar, not all dealers have the equipment and space to test it. The DVSA has a safety defect report form on it's site, easy to use and take minutes to complete, lets get them filled and in and push the issue with the DVSA, the failure of the box on the road is not the issue they are so engrossed in, it is when the system selects limp home mode at speed that is.

  41. Well some of you may have wondered how the FOI action got on, I appealed the decision not to tell me anything and had them review it. It seems that the DQ200 issue continues and that a 'not quite a safety recall'' was issued in 2014. These engineers have your lives in their hands - they need sacking, See below. Yes, the gearbox does enter freewheel and coast, but when the system with a lit up dash decides it is fault it puts the box straight into limp mode. They can't see that, work it out or even ask the question of VAG 'What happens next, does just roll to a stop? I suggest that we all fill in this link and get Colin Toy to take notice - https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-recalls-and-faults/report-a-serious-safety-defect This is the reply from SUK, they still don't understand fully what happens. Does anyone know what the dealer only recall was for and what VIN it applies to? From: Toy, Colin [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 20 November 2018 14:43 To: ash Subject: RE: FOI Request IA/01925/18 Dear Mr Cutler, I have been passed your latest correspondence with our Public liaisons officer regarding your previous FOI request IA/01925/18. I note the case has been closed and the information requested was responded to previously. To clarify the points raised in your Email 13/11/2018. There are some instances where a safety issue may exist which does not meet the definition of a safety defect as defined by the Codes of Practice. DVSA supports these issues by the use of a “non-coded action”. A non-coded action is defined as “a proactive and proportionate action registered with DVSA, which falls outside the scope of a safety recall”. The action that relates to your previous correspondence is, as mentioned, an NCA (Non Coded Action) these are not published in the same way as a safety recall. The NCA is action short of a safety recall but determined to be clearly in the customer interest to have the remedial action carried out. The action is an initiative which has been proposed by a manufacture for a known defect. The process is very similar to a safety recall but is not mandatory, the manufacture can still apply for DVLA data to contact customers by letter to arrange the work to be undertaken. The NCA/2014/015 (Skoda Ref; 34F7) that your case refers to has been processed and the manufacture is continuing to support this action to resolve an issue with the mechatronics in these gearboxes. If you have not received any correspondence related to this action I would strongly advise you contact the manufacture for further guidance and advise. I have listed their contact details below for your assistance; Customer service: 0333 003 7504 http://www.skoda.co.uk I trust this to be of assistance to you. 44. They replied hiding behind some section the FOI act, that when I pointed out no one has or is being prosecuted, there is currently no testing being done by DVSA to which anyone is being or liable to be prosecuted then they are now going to review the request - I can't believe that the DVSA staff mentioned these sections in a reply without even reading them themselves, shocking. Strangely, they say that because the engine is running the driver still has control of direction and brakes, and thus not a safety issue I pointed out the the car decelerates rapidly with no braking lights being lit, the dashboard lights up with numerous warnings which take time to comprehend, An elderly driver may take some to time understand what has just happened. I also pointed out that if not one of their engineers had asked SUK / VAG 'does the brake light operate when the car decelerates in a fault condition' then they have failed to do their job. Another question was asked that if other reputable countries have found this to be a safety issue then why has the DVSA confidently found otherwise. As an engineer, I believe the DQ200 gearbox to be so poor when compared to the other versions of the DSG gearbox it should be either made more reliable or withdrawn from use. When the units get to 80K miles like mine they will drop like flies if they haven't already done so. A DQ200 failure on the A34 south of the M40 does not bare thinking about, best of luck if it does. I don't think that the serial numbers of the ASIL's and any other paperwork titles will be forthcoming.
