  1. Easy enough to get to, details in the handbook. Also there are several YouTube how-to vids. I found it quite fiddly to get the glove box door restraint lever latched properly, but diy do-able.
  2. Wish I’d read the last couple of posts first, it was an interesting read until the great anticlimax…. 🙂🙂
  3. I’m another one who doesn’t like the iPad blu-tac’d to the dashboard. It’s why I moved from Mercedes in 2015…
  4. Apologies if I’ve missed this in my search of the forum… The Nankook Venus Prime tyres my 1.4 Octavia came to me shod with are very noisy on many road surfaces, moreso even than Mrs B’s Nissan. Any first-hand recommendations for quieter tyres? (Standard 17” wheels) Thanks in advance
  5. That makes me feel even older - my first car was a pre-war Morris 8! Two seater tourer (rag top), given to me by my sister when it failed its MOT - cost me 2/6d for a new reflector, plus tightening up all the front (cart spring) suspension. Wish I still had it… (that’s it in the background in the pic. I’m on the left, sitting astride my 350 Norton, wearing my school uniform.)
  6. Just leaving Swanage station…(iPhone 8!)
  7. Could you use a piggy back fuse (eBay’s your friend) and take the power from an ignition controlled fuse?
  8. Thanks JR, it seems OK since I reset it. Apologies for delay in acknowledgment, most of our town has been without Wi-Fi since Sunday - rats had chewed through a main fibre supply line…
  9. The long term mpg readout on my Octavia has suddenly started acting funny - usually it’s the most stable of the 3 options, from start, since refuelling, and long term. But today, it’s fluctuating, almost (but not in sync with) the instant readout. Now it’s reading around the late 50s/early 60s mark. Ok, over the last 3 days I have been adding the miles, but the other 2 readouts aren’t as high. EDIT: I’ve now reset it, so we’ll see in the next day or so…
  10. This thread reminded me of the Top Gear episode where Clarkson filled up a Diesel MB in London, drove to Edinburgh and back to the same filling station without refuelling. And IIRC, being Clarkson, he got bored at doing economical speeds, and floored it a few times.
  11. My dad started driving in 1935 - no test - and stopped driving when he had a stroke at age 89. I’d never known him not to have a company car or his own after retirement, and had a clean licence throughout. I’m now on 3-year post age 70 licences, having passed my bike test in 63, and car test in 64. It’s the bike licence that is more concerning, IMO, I passed aged 16 on an old Lambretta, and the following weekend bought a 350 Norton. Even now I am licenced to ride any high powered bike, regardless of when I last rode.
  12. Couple of points, I bought mine from AliExpress and it came straight through, no extra charges. Zymurgy, I don’t know whether you’ve seen member Weyland’s excellent guide to fitting a reverse camera from AliExpress: details of how to select the correct version are included. Thread heading is “How to: Reverse Camera Fitting Guide” on this forum
  13. I agree, it’s a feature that’s not really necessary. But tbh, weighing up starter motor etc and my irritation against the environment, I just switch stop/start off when shuffling forward in traffic…
  14. Thanks PhilD2, (and numskull), I had another go, and managed to prise the jet elbow off the pipe, seems it’s an interference fit - the car’s an Octavia, but seems the same set up. I pushed a short length of Strimmer plastic line down the pipe, I thought that couldn’t cause any damage, and fortunately it cleared the blockage. FWIW, it went in about 3” till it hit an obstruction, presumably the 90 deg bend
  15. In your previous post, you said You removed the jet unit. Would you explain how you did this, please (assuming hatchback), as I don’t want to force/break anything. Thanks in advance Malcolm
  16. Have to say I thought the same, and try it with ignition on, ign off, door open door closed etc
  17. Looks the same both sides, so maybe deliberate or OE. I seem to recall the Escort XR3 having ‘non-handed’ wheels, and I thought the same aerodynamic fine on one side…
  18. Sorry I can’t shed any light on this, but I’ll be interested in the replies, as mine (AliExpress aftermarket) chooses when to work and when not. If it’s not working, when I shift out of reverse, I get a screen message which amounts to ‘park assist not available’ , which I have to acknowledge. No other other symptoms, it either works perfectly, or not at all!
  19. Thanks again, but I’m still a bit confused: I looked online for ‘Skoda/VW SDcard’, and they all seem to already have the updates installed and are around £30. Is this correct, if so, what am I downloading, or are there blank VAG ones? re which version, I’m happy with ECE 1, as I’m only really interested in Uk maps. Sorry to appear slow on the uptake. Malcolm
  20. Thanks, I feared that might be the case. Apart from that, is it straightforward though?
  21. The car is 18reg 1.4 DSG Octavia with Amundsen unit, and I have found an update online - ECE 1 2023. Now the Q - using a new Skandisk 32gb SD card, do I just download this update onto the card, and then put the card in the SD card 1 slot in the glovebox unit, replacing the one already there? can something be that simple? I said it was a daft question, but thanks for reading it…🤔
  22. Not that I know of, but when I built my JZR (it has a sequential gearchange), it was just a case of positioning the gear lever pivot point above or below the pushrod. But that is purely a mechanical lever setup, worlds away from the DSG, I would imagine. FWIW, I prefer the opposite to you, as I think it’s more logical to pull back when decelerating…
  23. I had a similar experience a few years ago, when I was able to prove, with the help of evidence from the Met Office and Ordnance Survey, that the ‘cash machine - for Police use only’ (aka safety/speed camera) was showing the wrong time. Unlike this example, the Authority didn’t write to acknowledge the wrong calibration, or cancel the NIP, they just let it die. Presumably so that unlike the OP, I couldn’t go public… That I may have been speeding was irrelevant: the fact that I wasn’t speeding at the time they said was very relevant though. Rather like for the OP, they hadn’t got all the factors correct.
  24. The first~ a Boys’ Brigade publicity photo taken at the Raleigh factory when I was 16 (my usual mount was a Norton 350 Model 50) The 2nd pic was a couple of weeks ago aboard a Kawasaki Z400 on holiday in Gran Canaria.
  25. I could never understand this use of the horn. What does it mean? Is it to say ‘I’m here and I’m coming through’? So what if two vehicles approaching the bridge/bend both sound their horns? And what guarantee is there that any other driver has heard the horn, however loud? Must be Hell for folks living near the bridge! IMO blind bridges should be approached very slowly, leaving enough time to stop if another vehicle is coming the other way. Thanks how I’ve acted for over 55 years, with no problems. Apologies for mini thread hijack.
