1.8TSI and 2.0TSI engine failures

A very interesting read given i have been considering a petrol VRS ..... I say considering with a capital C ! Has this issue with the chain and associated bits and bobs been been sorted on the brand new petrol VRS being sold today or is it still a time bomb ?

Indeed, it looks like the early BZB engined 1.8's don't seem to suffer with this as no-one's come forward with one going bang yet, touch wood. They have a different oil system but still use the v.1 tensioner that people have had problems with..

It's the reaction of skuk to repairing a part broken during the warranty period due to defective design. The warranty clauses that component part suppliers have to sign up to in order to win the projects pretty much place exactly that responsibility upon them. If your part fails during the warranty period through no fault or misuse of the owner then you are liable for the replacement cost. I was involved in a service recall on the jag XF a few years ago, that almost went to litigation, so I've got a few warranty scars. No part supplier would ever divest their responsibility by claiming some rubbish about inherent design flaws, in fact they'd slaughter you for making such a naive admission.

2011 1.8TSI Mk2 Octavia Scout

I had my engine replaced but didn't dig into it to find out what engine it was replaced with.

Now developed a new issue (see post entitled "Engine Flutter/Judder") and I'm starting to worry that I should be on this thread not my 'Flutter/Judder' thread!

I notice there are engine codes at the beginning of this thread. Can anyone tell me if these codes are marked on the engine somewhere? (as my logbook will show the code for the original engine, I presume?)

It I wanted to change the tensioner and the other things that seem to cause this problem on a 61 plate tfsi what do I need to get quoted to change? For peace of mind

 

From reading around on here I think you're looking at ~£400 to have the new tensioner and chain sourced and fitted.  You're looking at potentially 10x that if it fails however.

I made a deal with my friendly dealer, I will order the tensioner kit soon, have it replaced and if it fails and kills my engine, the Tensioner part is covered by 2 Year Warranty, so indirectly all damages made by tensioner to engine are covered too. 

 

I've done around 53.000 Miles, so better safe than sorry.

Are you ordering the parts, or is it all being done through the dealer?

How much are you looking at for parts? And dealer labour? I'm on 66k and my warranty runs out in a few months so I'm tempted to get mine done.

Parts are ordered through dealer, so they get 2 year warranty.

Complete kit is around 220 Euro, no labour charge as I maintain and help them with their IT Network when needed. Otherwise there have been no TSI failures cause of tensioner on around 50 Skoda/Audi 1.8/2.0 Petrols that have been sold by them since 2008 when VW opened officially here, sure diesel Octavia Taxis are the bulk of the rest  :)

 

Since my Scout is remapped and moded, he suggested best way to get covered would be to change Tensioner and not worry about engine failure after that.

Hi gents/ladies; first post so apologies for wading in with a question.

 

I'm viewing a 2012 (12) registered 2.0TSI VRS this week (29,000 miles, FDSH). My question is; is this car likely to be affected with this issue, or do questions have to be asked of the dealer (ie. engine codes/upgraded tensioners etc.)

 

Any pointers/suggestion would be gratefully received.

2012 is the year the tensioner detail design finally went stable I believe so the date of manufacture on the engine is the critical info.

 

Take a look at the washer bottle/brake resevoir end of the engine block, should hopefully still be a paper label that tells you what the date of manufacture was for the engine unit.

IIRC a date later than May 2012 gives you the possibility it has the latest tensioner. The later in 2012 the higher the degree of confidence should be.

 

Mine is January 2012 so it 'should' have the version before the latest, but not the VERY latest.

 

If you look at the beginning of this thread there are relatively few instances of 2012 reg failures, but not entirely free of them.

Thanks very much, that's helpful. I notice that a few '12' plates have the silver interior trim whereas this one has the fake carbon. I'm presuming based on that fact that there must have been a crossover period for that trim change sometime in 2012 which may mean a later manufacturing date? I'll go straight for the label in any case and if it isn't there will be asking about dates etc. Thanks again.

Mine also has the 'carbon black' trim and that's a late May 2012 registration. I've not really researched the other trim etc labels elsewhere on mine, there are plenty to choose from, but if the engine build is January and the reg May, in my case it must have been built built during Q1 or Q2 of 2012.

I've finally binned the idea of getting a 2.0TSI. Spookliy I know Gunner216 (post#86) personally and called him asking how he was getting on with his VRS only to be told he'd posted here! This was before i knew he was even a member on here. It's all too close for comfort for me so I'm out.

The black trim was brought in for MY13. Not sure when that was released though.

 I bought mine in Aug 2012 It is a 2013 model with the black carbon trim.

Me skoda octavia scout 1.8 tsi is a big disappointment, 2 years ago 65000km i had a big engine failure , valve broken , pistons total cost i had to pay 3000 euros beacause i was out of guarantee. The official dealer engineers never found out what caused that damage! Now AGAIN engine failure because of the "timing chain failure", big damage again 2000 euros! VAG has produced a new timing chain kit on 2012 for this engines and they didnt inform their costumers about it!!!!!

I wanted a mk2 fl VRS estate. Read through this thread. I was worried about the tensioner after suffering a near miss in the 1.4tsi golf. It cost £1200 for vw to replace the timing chain (at 42,000miles) and ancilliary bits and I was lucky in that scenario compared to some others I suppose.

 

Anyway, after all the good information in this thread I bought a 2011 car with 33,000 miles and travelled an hours drive to Lion Garage in Hinckley to get the timing chain changed next day.  Jason was very switched on and helpful. Replaced the main timing chain, 3x guides, tensioner, upper gasket, 1 x seal, lower cover (they can get damaged removing) and oil change and filter.  Came to ~£640. Parts would of accounted for a chunk.  Took them best part of a full day so seems pretty reasonable for a pretty big job.

 

I feel reassured even though the car has cost me £600 more than it "may" have needed to..

That seems like a great price, especially including the oil and filter change. Where did you order the replacement parts from?

I didn't get the parts the garage organised it all after I asked them to quote for the job.  But I did see the parts - they were vw/ag parts. I would have a guess that they buy off TPS as they were a (small) specialising in vw / audi group cars.
