  1. View from hiking up to Blackfell.
  2. Boris really needs to be made to take a trip to Durham, and then the next day to Inverness, then do the return trip in an under £35,000 EV. I have done 300 miles today, am charging for the 3rd time today. No public toilets near any of the EV chargers, one charger took a couple of phone calls to get started. So far 6 hours of travel started 9 hours ago. Need another 30 minutes charge before ready for tomorrow. Lots needs doing in 10 years before many can be part of the lifestyle changes required to have lower emissions or lower costs driving EV,s. A TESLA is not the answer as most I see are waiting their turn to charge at non TESLA chargers or are slow charging.
  3. And the view from the top of Blackfell, looking away from Windermere. We got a bit wet on the hike back down!

Flushed with recent success using the wealth of information on this site, I've fitted 2 rear usb sockets. I got the car in March, and I started this in May, so it's taken a little while, but I ordered various parts in different attempts. Once I decided to go for the kit from AliExpress, and got all the parts it only took 10 mins to change over.
  5. Ok so first, I'm sorry to hear about this but really don't go crazy please, you're definitely not the first to have a IS38 blown sure and plenty of options down the road that will get you up n running with a much greater reliability long term. Now, I have said it before, thing with these engines is everybody is supposedly able to tune them, and maybe they all run similar peak boost but the way the power is made and how all supporting parameters are adjusted is what makes all the difference both in end performance and reliability. Research, research, research. If you can't swear by a particular smaller tuner you're thinking about or don't know first hand the owners of the cars they mapped and how the have fared over time don't take your chances and go with a big name that at least in this platform and engine are all proven with thousands of cars around the world, especially at such off-the-shelf tuning levels of stage 1 and 2. Don't cheap out on remaps, you are at worst talking about a mere couple hundred more for something which could have an impact of a multiple times higher cost. That been said, yes the IS38 turbocharger is known for its shaft weakness, although as the revisions came along (there's been a few since 2014) cases were diminishing and the majority of cars post 2016 have been fine. Myself I've had two IS38 cars both mapped to 370-390bhp from two different tuners and both have been fine, plenty of others I know that are stage 2 and still fine, then I've read about stocks cars blown, it was really a lottery with chances dropping the younger the cars are... Due to this history, It's very hard / impossible to be able to categorically blame the tuner or the turbo unit, or partly both so it does not really make any sense to chase the causes of this any further as it won't get you anywhere (apart from making you mad probably). I remember in an earlier post of yours stating the tuner had trouble keeping the intake temps down which is rather unusual for a stage 1 map, more important though you also say you've had issues with him in the past which really begs the question why you took your chances with them. It's a rhetorical question, no need to answer it. Where do you go from here: Are you happy with the car otherwise? Do you plan to keep it for some time? If (and only if) the answer is no then head back to your original tuner, ask them to replace the turbo with a used IS38 from the used parts market (cost around 500-700EUR) and ask them to revert the software to the stock map (every decent tuner should be able to provide this for free, especially after such an incident) and move on. However I don't think this is what you had in mind. If you've answered yes then the good news are that instead of a costly replacement you can upgrade your own turbo to a much greater standard (uprated shaft, bearings, balancing etc.) and decide what power you want to run, you could simply leave it at stage 2 levels of 400bhp or go for more. For example, I've heard really good stuff about Dan (i think is his name) from Littco: https://www.littco.co.uk/hybrid-turbos-1-c.asp They offer lots of very affordable upgrade options depending on what you want to do and the fact you will be sending them your own turbo to serve as the base is keeping the cost down. FYI the housing itself has no issues and can run over 500bhp, it's the core/shaft that is prone to fail so it's an easy fix for a company that knows what they're doing. For example the L380 MQB option with "Supercore" upgrade is just 660 GBP and you've got nothing to worry after that. I'd suggest calling them and explaining your situation and they should be able to advice you accordingly. Then after the turbo is sorted choose your next tuner wisely (a whole different discussion). Yes it's not for free but much lower than other more serious failures and you will have removed a known weakness of the stock engine/turbo. In any case I think it's clear you should not even consider an OEM turbo at full retail price (there is no cost covered by the warranty obviously as you said), as even if running stock power you could end up right in the same position after a while. Plus there is no reason to do that really. The gen3 EA888 engine is one of the most solid that have come out from VAG in terms of reliability and tuning potential with the IS38 turbo being the only real possibility for failure which at least is easily addressed. Let us know how you decide to proceed and remember **** happens all the time, as long as it's not something terminal don't beat yourself up too much. I don't know how power hungry you are but personally I'd have seen it as the perfect excuse to proceed with my hybrid turbo plans...
  6. One thing that doesn't seem to have been addressed in today's "Green" announcement is how to solve the EV charging problem that people living in cities who have to park in the road will have - trailing cables across the pavement isn't safe (or legal?). Just providing more public charging points isn't enough, everyone who will own an EV needs to be able to safely charge it at home.
  7. Size does matter. But now I’m prepared for the Swedish winter and icy roads.
  8. But you probably saved more than that by having it serviced elsewhere. Swings and roundabouts and you knew the service had been done properly by someone you trust..
  9. I have a similar feeling about lane assist on our second car, a 2020 Toyota Aygo, it too makes far too many 'complaints' on non M or dual carriageway roads - but at least when I turn it off it stays off. Seems to me that lane assists isn't fit for purpose on anything other than M or dual carriageway roads.

  11. Just to conclude... My engineer-friend removed some detritus from the container into which water drains from the windscreen (name?), ensured all accessible drain holes were clear (including door).. and having dried out the interior with a fan (accelerated by my wife's hair-dryer), no further ingress has occurred after 2 weeks outside with several visitations of rain. Living near several trees, I now know I need to keep on top of leaves, pine needles, etc, and remove them all promptly from the windscreen and bonnet entrances. Thank you all you helpful contributors. Keep safe.

Hi I’m Megs! I’ve had my yellow Octavia now for 2.5 years and although it made me cry when I bought it (silly little faults) Beryl as she is now known has been fab. Well up until recently but I’ll ask for help elsewhere in the forum. So hi!! 😘 xx p.s the pic is when I bought her, she’s pretty filthy (unlike me 😇)
  13. Petrol manual is now up in the UK. £29,815.
  14. They do not come off the transporter in 'In transit mode' with the 'Low fuel' warning light on.

For those with a DQ381 note @ 80,000 miles and not the 40,000 the other are due to be serviced qt with the exclusion of DQ200's (7 speed twin dry clutch DSG's)
  16. My Karoq Sportline 2.0TSI has made it through lockdown to me, and initial impressions are very good. Some oddities though... I'd opted for the 5 year warranty, but see from the minimal sheet describing my car that my dealer gave me, it expires 5 years after it was built rather than when it was bought. Others might like to check theirs to ensure they don't get caught out. In my case the two dates were only a few weeks apart but if your car's delivery has been delayed it could become more significant. I'd also chosen for the 'Personalisation' option - primarily because it was a cheap way to get a third spare key. So was disappointed when the dealer only gave me two, and insisted that MY21 cars only got two now. But when I got home and investigated how well my phone fitted on the Qi charging mat, I was pleased to find a third key sitting inside it! And it works on my car too. Finally, others have complained that the Isofix covers are no longer fitted in MY21 cars, so I kept mine back from the Golf I was P/Xing. Only to find them already fitted in my back seats. Let's see what I find tomorrow when I start setting up the Infotainment system, Connect, etc... Chris
  17. Here are all the details, enjoy!
  18. No they'll require additional wiring, levelling motors, level sensors on the front and rear of the car to adjust the beam, front bumper with headlight washers with the tubing and the bigger washer bottle, which I think is the 5L version. The lights/washers need to work and be there in order to pass an MOT. Some have stated that they've just bought an adapted wiring harness and have them adjusted manually. But as far as I'm aware it was a legal requirement to have xenons installed with headlight washers and for them to work.
  19. If its of help to anyone, I've just found out that the 280ps engine is now available to order and that the lead time is 10-12 weeks.
  20. With long life servicing it would seem a sensible choice to have one dealer service to keep a warranty that may pay for a new engine or other major expense if something failed prematurely . I know you can use independent servicing to the same standard and keep warranty but it gives you another hoop to jump in the event of a claim
  21. Being able to order a takeaway should not play any part in the decision making process. Being able to charge an EV from every home including flats and those without off road parking is essential. I believe ultimately (not in my lifetime) that all motorways will have drive on roadtrain carriages, electric powered and with inductive charging from underneath the stationary vehicles, Eurotunnel could be the first to trial this. OR, and the physics will no doubt preclude this flight of fancy, when you drive on a main road or motorway your vehicle charges inductively from the road surface taking on more power than it expends. No more filling stations, no more charging stations, no more home charging but road tolls that include the cost of the energy consumed and stored.
  22. Does this make VCDS obsolet?
  23. It's not like that in much of the rural areas of the country - the vast majority of the people in the small town where I live drive approx 20 miles each way to work each day; yes we can get home deliveries from some (not all) of the supermarkets but where I live NONE of the national food takeaway companies operate so even getting a takeaway from one of the national companies means a 40 mile round trip by car. The "powers that be" need to think of the whole country not just the large cities...

Local locksmith (like house keys) managed to cut me one, but its just a key to physically open and close the door (if the original key had managed to lock itself in the car - dodgy door switches etc). Think you need to identify the frequency of existing key if you want to code it as a second key to be able to start the car, but need SKC code, retrievable through Vagtacho i think, but then coded through VCDS. Think there are people who can do them for about 70-100ish? Think there used to be a guy on the forums, cant remember his name, something like army or action man i think, dont know if they still do though.
  25. Useful to note that the OP is not in the UK,(gleaned from another forum) where his proposals would be illegal, and would fail the MoT test.
  26. I think Škoda have produced a couple of different types of 4x4 Octavias over the years . There has been a standard hatch and estate with the 4x4 system and the Scout model which has more off road styling and a taller ride height. Maybe a set of Scout springs would help.
  27. But if your a real tight arse like me the question is ... Would you do it in warranty? I had my last car from new 10 years. It had no dealer servicing. I probably saved a minimum 2.5K. My wife's car was from 08 until this year. Probably saved £1.5k Neither required any warrantee work. I have the funds but not the inclination to pay £180 for an oil and filter change, never mind the £285 I was quoted. But what about the Warrantee?? I'll take my chances again I think. (Await the thread where I complain bitterly about a problem they won't fix!!)
  28. Yes. I think there is a set of instructions in the VCDS section.
  29. Parking sensors work fine, gives you a colour reading on the screen in terms of distance from an object. Also installed a reversing camera and that works fine too. You can set the display to show you the turning trajectory when you move the steering wheel. and give you the green/yellow/red distance markings. Doesn't boot up instantly compared to the original Swing radio, but quick enough it's not an issue.
  30. Try individual mode, you can change all the settings individually(!) there.
  31. I road test and look at the car every time I drive it, so it's £184 for oil change and oil filter!
  32. I see the German Skoda Community is going off on it now on this subject... and 7zip obviously. Stick to the VW notes on the PDF and you dont have issues. 32gb SD card, class 10, Fat 32, use 7zip to unpack to HD and then copy. If Mac, CleanMydrive app after its copied to the SD to remove Mac garbage (also delete garbage after the clean) & use Keka for unzipping on a Mac. Deviate at your peril . You got to love it.
  33. This is most probably because the original lights have diodes in series. When the lights are replaced, the current can flow the other way and the control unit thinks the glove box is open. Even if a LED acts like a diode, there could be additional circuitry in them that allows a small current to flow the other way.
  34. THANKS I will subscribe and then list... maybe later THANKS

You have a touching faith in the thought process and decision making analysis of governments! I doubt very much if any real common sense thinking has been applied to this at all - where is the power coming from, how are drivers without off street parking to charge their vehicles, how will the throughput of cars through charging stations on motorways etc. be ramped up to charge the same number of cars per minute as are filled with diesel/petrol per minute (otherwise queues will extend miles on the motorways), how will every village get fast charging points or how will power distribution be beefed up to provide every dwelling with a charging point. As far as I can see none of this has been resolved. Just bland statements that .... we will be prepared by the changeover date ---- dream on!
  36. Just bought VW Data Plug for £4.75 on eBay to use in 2016 Skoda Octavia. Plugged in and worked without any problem whatsoever since its exactly the same part. Skoda price for the same device is £40. Bonkers!!!
  37. The model is a 1.2 outdoor SE L DSG type designation YETI OUTD STY OTS81/1.2A7F Last serviced in August 24553 miles Extended warranty is with skoda- see attached copy- no mention of a courtesy car The car is with the Skoda main dealer from whom I bought it. It was a demo car with 3k on the clock. Thanks for your comments 35239_skoda_extended-warranty_dec19_nav_v1.pdf
  38. Another set of Pilot Sport 4's on the front thats the third set in less than 2 years, rears are still just over 5mm on them. Probably explains the tractions issues. More picture spam again since ive started to use my camer more again Also been having some thoughts on the S2000 Rear spoiler as well
  39. My 2006 Fabia vRS had the following options from factory - Black magic paint Leather seats (red piping) Xenon headlights with washers Cruise control Passenger airbag on/off switch in glove box. I’ve retrofitted - Maxidot display only (no sat nav) SE sunset tinted glass (5 pieces) Cup holder in dash (sat nav version) Rear cup holder Rubber boot liner and mats x4 for winter Leather door cards (seat surgeons) Rear centre headrest I’m currently in the process of fitting the centre headrest I bought in leather from Germany, the framework is 14mm and not 12mm like here in the UK, so luckily there’s a 14mm guide option for allowing fitment in the rear 2/3 seat back, it was tongue in cheek cutting the holes in the leather mind you, but carefully succeeded in the end. quite a few mods, I like retrofitting parts that were extra, it adds to the appeal of the car, now that such optional extras were rare. cheers Dean
  40. Put fuel in for the first time since March !!! Well I tried to yesterday but the fuel flap was well and truly stuck fast. After an hour or so yesterday lock unlock bother repeat, without damaging anything I managed to slide the painted cover off and WD40 as best I could. This morning after trying again to no avail I removed all the panels from inside just in case, nope so put back. Lightbulb moment..... I had been looking for a screw to undo but the black plastic surround is removed by inserting a tool/ screwdriver in four positions (2 top 2 bottom) and levering. Then with a reasonable amount of persuasion hay presto out hello fuel filler cap. I removed the locking mechanism from the back and replaced everything else so now as before but no lock until I have a chance to get it replaced.
  41. I had a SEAT Areca previously and the lane assist was perfect. Seeing that it comes from the same VAG stable I can't understand why the Octavia is so bad!
  42. Just noticed the Honda Beat and Suzuki Cappucino in the pics - always liked those but they look even smaller these days given everything has grown over the years!
  43. I'd turn it off, just as I did on this one. I hate it, I like quiet drives or listening to music/radio. If I were to have one I would ask the dealer to disable the noise maker as part of the sale deal. It's like many celebrities these days, fake (teeth, face, (body parts) and personality) .
  44. I've been using this stuff for tyre shine. Works reasonably well & lasts longer than most others I've had in the past. Applied with a paint brush or small sponge. £10.50 on Amazon at the moment.
  45. On a Fabia II the dipped beams are on seperate fuses - 57 and 58 - and there should not be a surge from one blowing the other as on the same circuit.
  46. A minor point but unlike the 2020/2021 update, this one won't quite fit on a freshly-formatted 32GB NTFS card (so don't waste 20 minutes or so unzipping it until it fails at 99%). No problem unzipping / installing when reformatted FAT32. (I'm not sure why some Youtube videos recommend NTFS, though that worked last time for me).

I had seen that, and it's something I definitely want to do. I'm just not a fan of removing the whole bumper to do it. I did some research and it may be possible to do it without removing the bumper, but I need to look at it in more detail.
  48. So you fitted the larger turbo on your car but the ECU map is the stock one, the 90 HP version? And you drive the car everyday with no problems, no errors no limp mode or anything like this? I'm asking because in my country (Romania) I found a new turbo (04E 145 721 B) for around 200 euros and I haven't decide it yet which upgrade path to follow. I have a 2016 Fabia 1.2 TSi 90HP and I want the maximum power and torque I can get without other major changes to the car like stronger clutch or brakes, extra cooling, fuel injectors, induction kit etc. I know the turbo swap is considered a major change, but since I can do it with 200 euros plus 100 labor, and the turbo is brand new ....it's pretty tempting for me... So if I want around 130 HP is better to remap with the current stock turbo or the remap with the larger turbo is a better choice? I assume that the smaller turbo will be pushed to the max for the same power that the larger turbo will obtain at half of its potential, so it will last longer before it brakes. Do you think I can drive my car a few months with the larger turbo without remap? After a while when my budget will allow it, I can make a custom map (400 euros) especially for better boost at lower rpms. What do you think!
