  1. Diagnostic is a lot more than plugging it in… and I’ve never had a diagnostic computer tell me what part/sensor to change either. if you go in for a noise from the suspension of course they aren’t plugging it in, but they still need to diagnose the fault. Whatever means they take, it’s still a diagnosis session with a cost. are their prices acceptable? Far from it in my opinion! But somethings gotta pay for the nice sofas and the free tea and coffee in the waiting room
  2. Whilst I agree, it's not a good analogy for this situation: - If you have a SmartTV that can stream YouTube or iPlayer or Spotify etc and one of those services shuts down, there is nothing the SmartTV manufacturer can do to reinstate that service. - In this case, Trafficmaster have decided to end TMC over FM so you can't really hold VAG accountable. If a contract between VAG/Trafficmaster has been broken, then they may be able to sue and offer a small amount of compensation to owners but without details, it's just conjecture at this point. However, I certainly agree with PetrolDave that they should have better messaging around it and not be performing diagnostics - ideally refunding anyone who has paid for this issue to be 'diagnosed'... IIRC, it's not the first time something similar has hit VAG as some cars supported Google Earth before that got pulled
  3. And in the meantime, any Skoda dealers selling used cars affected by this are passing on vehicles with a known fauls. If they fail to inform buyers then there's a whole different set of implications.
  4. Exactly, we were sold cars with TMC for the built-in sat nav which has been removed without warning. There IS a solution which is for VAG to pay to subscribe to INRIX and issue new maps (they only need to update the UK section of the maps as this is a UK specific problem). And equally importantly for Skoda UK to issue advice to ALL UK Skoda dealers and their call centre staff so they stop telling us we need to pay for diagnostics
  5. Having a warranty just means there are T&C's about having the car serviced to the guidelines, recommendations even schedule or specification if it says that and what parts / fluids should be used and keep the record. Paying £100 or more plus VAT an hour to have maintenance work done elsewhere like a bearing does not invalidate the warranty. If there is a possibility of it being the Engine, Gearbox, Haldex if the warranty covers them then it is well worth getting the car into the Main Dealers or Approved Repairers as the Warranty terms likely say.
  6. It is not a diagnostic fee. The correct term is "we dont want anything to do with any vehicles once we have sold them aside from lucrative servicing and obligatory warranty work so hopefully you will be outraged enough at the £135 for doing nothing fee and go elsewhere"
  7. Hi, In terms of paint protection from the nature elements and easiness of cleaning the car, I would totally recommend it. But if you think to protect the car with ceramic coating against stones, the only protection against stones is PPF (paint protection film). I wrapped the front end of mine in PPF and add a ceramic coating on the rest. And the paint is doing pretty good after 2 and a half years, 51k km and 3 winters. Roads in winter here in Slovenia are like gravel roads. They use soo much sand. It's crazy.
  8. Assuming it's the car in your bio, I would be taking an 8 year old car to a trusted place rather than a dealer. Sounds like you are sceptical (rightly) so maybe look around for a more suitable garage then cancel the appointment?
  9. Quite a common problem. As mentioned by others, likely that the ventilation system has water in it that has gone stagnant over time. Most likely cause is not running the air con regularly enough. Some say have it running all the time, I probably run it about 70 -80% of the time, all year round. My fix ( gleaned from this very forum ) was to take it for a 20 -30 min run up the motorway, air con on, set temp to MAX and crack the windows open a bit, it will get very hot in the car. This should evaporate all the stagnant water from the system. Afterwards invest in an Air Con Bomb and follow instructions on the can. After a couple of weeks the perfume from the bomb should have disappeared and hopefully you ventilation will smell all good again. https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/go4-auto-go4-air-con-cleaner-150ml-552777691
  10. There should be a legal requirement for devices which provide key functions via connected services (cars, smart TVs, other domestic appliances) to be sold with a minimum supported lifetime quoted in the showroom at time of purchase. Then at least consumers would know where they stand when buying a product and have some legal recourse when service providers prematurely stop supporting their “old” platforms. Otherwise all too soon service providers cut the cost of supporting what they regard as “legacy” systems. Until we as consumers stop accepting as the norm that “technology moves on” nothing will change. Perhaps the EU should take a lead on that as they are keen to reduce electronic waste? Won’t help us in the UK, but it would be a start.
  11. I second that. Sheplobsters. Forget what the RAC guy or tyre fitters may or may not have said, use your MK1 eyeballs and decide for yourself whether one or both driveshafts are missing the retainig nut or bolt, you simply remove the wheel centre cap and look inside. If missing then do not drive the car even 6 inches.
  12. I'm not surprised your local garage had no idea what you were talking about because neither do I. To make this simple to understand, forget whether you may or may not have a nut on your driveshaft (some have a bolt, some have a nut). To take a wheel off you don't touch anything bar the nuts or bolts holding the wheel on so I'm not sure which nut he is on about unless he removed the track rod ball joint from the hub maybe for some reason and thats the nut he was talking about??
  13. Just to set the record straight re: some of the more recent posts to this thread - this doesn't appear to be a Skoda / VAG decision, rather the supplier of TMC data (Trafficmaster) have stopped broadcasting TMC data to all manufacturers that used to rely on it, so this includes VW, Skoda, Seat, Audi, Honda, Mazda, Chrysler, and Vauxhall and possibly others. Since Trafficmaster cannot be compelled to resume the service, we need to pressure our vehicle manufacturers to devise a solution to get this functionality working again. The obvious solution is for them to pay INRIX (as they used to pay Trafficmaster) for TMC data and then issue an update to all impacted vehicles. The problem we are encountering is that Skoda seem largely clueless about the issue, and provide absolutely shockingly bad customer service. I just received another useless reply from them today. There must be people at Skoda/VAG that actually understand the issue and are perhaps even working on a fix, but the message is not getting through to anyone customer facing. Some of the replies we're receiving are a complete joke, they really are shambolic.
  14. Nice! Thanks a lot for your feedback! Sounds good! Does the ceramic coating make the pain look much more brighter / shinier or is it comparable with the original way the paint looks? Thanks! Because I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to getting it shinier.
  15. Is the worn bearing in the differential? If so that will be the smaller one on the opposite side to the removable cover, cant recall if its left or right as I was on my back, it was only yesterday that I was planning how to do the job and hopefully keep the car running in 2WD while I work on the unit. Be aware that whilst the bearing replacement is cheap and easy Skoda nor pretty much any independant garage will do it and the cost of a new diff is many thousands of pounds, expect a lot of wriggling from them in respect of whether it will be covered by the warranty. The blown speaker might actually show up as a fault code, the radio is a Canbus controller and most monitor their outputs. The worn bearing will probably have a "they all do that sir!' fault code 🤣
  16. Yup Skoda Warranty and no not approved used I've owned the car from new. Haldex done twice with the last change also having the strainer and housing cleaned.
  17. I've had c. 18 months of poor health; nothing that has proven to be critical or terminal so far but seriously debilitating. The weekend before last, I finally felt up attempting a short ride after almost 2 years off the bikes. Both my GS and X-Country have been fettled by a local BMW specialist and taken for MOT tests by my son, during this hiatus on my part. I decided to ease myself back into it by taking the X-Country out on some local backroads. I got all of 7 miles away from home when the red temperature warning light came on and the bike dumped all its coolant over my left leg and boot. A spring steel hose clip had failed and the hose between the radiator and engine had become detached. I was glad I'd worn my leather breeks and my Sidi Adventure boots when I could so easily have been out in motorcycle jeans and short boots. I was on my way to visit a friend whose birthday it was with a bottle of wine for him in my tank bag. I phoned him and he came out to rescue me in his old Saab 9000. He took me home, we picked up the Yeti and bike trailer and recovered the bike which has been sitting in the garage unloved ever since.
  18. Bummer on the coolant leak - don't leave it unloved. Get it fixed and get back out there!
  19. It's still under warranty which is why I'm mainly sticking with the MD. I do have a local specialist but they are not that much cheaper than the dealer. The car doesn't owe me anything in fact I'm about £2k up if you take into account the warranty claims and what I've spent on the warranty over the past 8 years. I'll suck this one up and see how it goes. MD Has always been first class.
  20. I've tried to claim before, unless the potholes been reported and they've failed to inspect it within their criteria, you don't stand much chance. But it's always worth a shot! On the other hand I got no where....
  21. Yes ceramic coating is 100% worth it for ease of cleaning the car. Dirt, bugs spatter all comes off much easier. Check with your detailer on the best product for your driving circumstances (mileage etc.) as not all coatings are equal; some last for 2 years other can be longer. Mines got GTechniq (not sure which one though; it’s warranted for 5years). It looks amazing after every wash. For protection against chips though PPF is needed. I’ve had some 🤬 try rub a coin into my bonnet and the PPF was swirled up and damaged, applied hot water and it healed up nicely and the paint underneath is fine. So again highly recommend it.

  23. Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately it’s the same for Romanian roads during winter I’m afraid..
  24. The fee is to plug in the diagnostic system and analyse the output. If you booked the car in for a specific job then they shouldn't need to do it. for example if you scanned the car and found you needed a new sensor, in theory you should be able to book it in for that new sensor. The issue with that is they will just hand the car back whether is fixes the original issue or not. Some independent garages knock the fee off the final bill if they find something that is needed. Then there are other things like a suspension rattle. If a dealer insists on plugging in for that and charging £135 I'd be looking to take the car else where.
  25. It's okay - we don't judge on here 😁 I think the answer is as others have alluded to, but just a heads up that some VAG cars can appear dry inside, but the water can collect under the carpet, between the floor pan and (or in) the sound deadening. Mk1 Superb's were notorious for it - the car appeared dry, but could hide gallons (literally) in the footwells. My Octavia got a bit musty, once or twice. The Aircon Bomb Gammyleg suggested resolved it both times (albeit I used a Comma version). Gaz
  26. Hi, As the subject states, I have 4 17" Gigaro alloys with 205/45/17s mounted. Both sets of tyres have decent tread, two are newer than the others. Front were fitted last March, backs were a few months before that. I don't have a tread gauge but they're both well legal (as you can see from the 20p test, pictured) I would estimate around 4-5mm ish tread on them. Two are Landsail, two are General Tyre. They're in pretty decent condition, but not perfect, as you can see. One has a weld repair that was professionally done, the worst scuff is on the second picture. There's light kerb damage around most of the edges and the paint is starting to flake slightly. They're normally mounted with 40 profile tyres but I put 45s on them to improve the crashy ride. They fit my Fabia wheel arches, I'm sure they'll fit many other cars beside, but I can't tell you which. https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNC54ENluz8WfaqXiEtNBX0najIZCX-CaXFNSj7aqYuwqy7UWyx1el2NoCYSAJxxQ?key=VGd6ajdnWHpzNWFZUTl6ZElVODBYWVF2Wndhekx3 more photos are here, let me know if the link doesn't work - I'm looking for something around £200 please feel free to PM me offers.
  27. Thanks I will look at doing that, won't it use a lot of fuel if I do that Thanks the inside of my car is completely dry
  28. Leave the aircon on all the time ,its also a dehumidyfier to keep the interior dry ,otherwise your just blowing warm dampish air about .
  29. Auto stop-start can be inhibited by external and internal temperatures - but likely your problem is with SOC or condition of your battery. If cabin temperature is not up (or down) to commanded temperature for heating or A/C, the stop-start will be inhibited to prevent, for instance, windscreen fogging, etc. These particular inhibiting conditions will usually go after 3 or 4 miles. There are quite a few inhibit conditions - but failing battery is the most common one if the issue persists after the vehicle is fully warmed up. Be aware that the battery is very rarely charged more than 75-80% by the smart-alternator, particularly with relatively short trips.
  30. Thanks for the advice. I tried your idea of "thinking" the steering and it worked well. I think I'm still used to 2 years of driving my Astra which did have a dead zone and required a bit of over-correction to keep it steady. The hot weather at the moment is also helping the car feel more grippy and planted. I'm currently running the backs at 31 psi (Skoda's recommended pressure) and the fronts at 33. I've had the fronts up to 34-35 psi which helps things but starts to deteriorate the ride a bit, hence I'm reluctant to take the fronts or backs much higher. It's a shame Skoda seemed to do a pretty sub-par job of both handling and ride quality - there doesn't seem to be a good compromise between the two without changing the shocks as I have done for the rear of the car. Interesting point about the Michelin Primacy, I thought the ride felt much firmer for the first few hundred miles after getting them. Grip is excellent however, particularly during the frosty winter.
  31. The Start-Stop not working due to cold weather is pure BS!! I live in Canberra, and it gets below zero here plenty of times, and Start-Stop is not affected. Sydney weather is nowhere near cold enough to affect that. The only time mine has been affected was when my battery started to run low. When u do change the battery, yes, u must perform a battery adaptation using a tool such as VCDS or OBDEleven. Otherwise the Skoda Service centre may do it for u. The other behaviors ur car is showing is strange indeed, and usually things start to play up when the battery is on its way out. When was ur battery changed? What is it's current State Of Charge? Should b close to 80% for a healthy battery. If it's not the battery, then something else more sinister is occurring. Again, u'll need VCDS or OBDEleven to run a full scan to see if any error codes r present.
  32. I expect it very soon. Within now and a couple of weeks
  33. Procedure is the same but firmware is not available yet
  34. Keep your eyes on Copart and the DVLA and you will see what it was sold for and how quickly its back on the road probably to an owner in the dark. Then you will see just how little the insurers actually have to pay out after deducting the excess and the salvage income. It's no wonder they are so keen to write a car off, a car which clearly can be repaired very cheaply given what the chop shop will have paid Copart, their labour and parts and the then reduced resale price. And yet they seem more than happy to spunk away on car hire fees, perhaps that is the key to the write offs that clearly are not, much quicker for it to be assessed a write off from a couple of photos and no physical inspection and to make the derisory pay out offer (at which point the liability for the car hire ends) than to have the vehicle in the repairers for months on end & perhaps refused by the owner a couple of times till put right what they screwed up, all that time the car hire costs are racking up.
  35. Thank you all for answering! Its a DSG car. And its not an UK car. I just got an ObdEleven device, gonna check maybe i can navigate to ''Module 19 - Gateway>Long Coding>FPA Funktion Freilauf DefaultON>Not Active'' and see what option the car has right now.
  36. while it would make sense, the issue was not happening on the infotainments that came from the factory with the software lower than 1896. for instance, mine was produced in Nov 2021, I have updated the infotainment in 2023 and the issues started after the 1896 update. I never had one single reboot until the update. from 1900 to 1940? Highly doubt that we’ll see this version that early. If that is the correct one for our cars.
  37. I think the part number you really need is 6Q0 407 396 B, £8.71 from Skoda dealers or maybe a little less from TPS. Your first link says the part is suitable for cars without power steering, which I doubt applies to yours, the second link is for a style of driveshaft nut only used in early mk1 Fabias about 20 years ago, or more, I believe. If you really do have one of these missing I would recommend getting one fitted very urgently, preferably before the car is driven. Wheel removal/refitting during a tyre replacement would not involve this nut, just the wheel bolts. If you can't find a local dealer with one in stock, this ebay seller seems to virtually always manage next day delivery - Genuine VW Audi Wheel Hub Axle Nut 6Q0407396B Polo A1 A2 Skoda Fabia Seat Ibiza | eBay

Am using 97 Oct (Costco fuel). Just recently had mot and full service done weekend. Haven’t changed tyres yet. They’re all still Uniroyal rain sport.

Definitely drains fuel when I put my foot down. I had a look on the real time MPG and at full throttle it was showing 7 MPG whereas before it was showing more than double that under full throttle. The predicted range also shoots down.
  40. I had a 1986 Micra as my first car which had a pin hole in the sump which use to leak oil. Every 3 months I'd park it on a bank with the front end higher to stop it leaking and get to work with some degreaser and chemical metal. I never changed the sump in the 2 years I owned the car 👍
  41. I got a genuine VW one through from Fixparts https://www.fixparts-online.co.uk It arrived today. So if anyone wants one here is the place to get one. I tried repairing the old one but its under a fair bit of load and the repair would be temporary at best.
  42. Thanks gents, I think that's the decision made 😂 and leaning towards Satin finish

I ordered a Skoda Octavia RS in February 2022. finally got it today and I am very happy.

I collected my Octavia Mk4 IV SEL estate / combi today from the dealer. Ordered 22nd Feb 22 original delivery estimate August 22. I started complaining to Skoda uk December 22 about lack of delivery information. Received the £100 sorry it’s late voucher from Skoda uk and fee life shine from the dealer for the delay. The dealership had a number of IVs so batches are starting to arrive. All those waiting I hope you get your cars soon. Regards BRS
  45. It's not even flash, just some kind of configuration. I will check if any number changes on next car.
  46. The part that is missing is my brain!! 😜 I opened the bonnet just to verify the mounting features were indeed present and found instead that the elves had snuck in overnight and very neatly fitted the sound absorber. I must have dreamed that it was missing, or confused mine with another vehicle. Duh! Thanks all for trying to help and sorry for all the fuss!
  47. Hi all Been on this forum for a number of years now, but only just found this part of the forum. I have been riding since 1994, and have ahd a full license since 1995, a full year before I got a car license. So I am well versed in bikes. I have never taken a break due to "family commitments" and "getting married", or any of that other stuff. I don't anything new, but I look after what I do have, and they are. A 2001 Yamaha Thunderace, an 11 plate Triumph Tiger 800 XC, and an 06 Yamaha WR250F, which is road legal for green laning. Hope to visit here a bit more often
