the truth about electric cars
2 pointsWell he doesn't work in civil engineering, or designing UK car parks so we can safely ignore him... I do. Factors of safety are made up of multiple elements - on loads / materials / design parameters and each does add up and multiply the others but none are individually in the region of 11 times. Whilst I'm on it I've just looked at the new June 2023 IStructE design guide for car parks and that references average vehicle weights as 1500kg and maximum vehicle weights as 2,500kg Interestingly the same edition of the above has finally recognised larger vehicle sizes and now recommends larger standard spaces, at 5m x 2.7m versus the previous 4.8m x 2.4m.2 points

DSG 7-speed gearbox complete failure - are Skoda UK likely to pick up repair costs?
I think any DQ381 will need to be coded in to match your car as it has a immobiliser in it. I can ask around if you like and see how much it would cost in total including fitting and recoding.2 points

Roomster mk1 overheating issue
2 pointsRadiator fan(s) should also spin up whenever the air conditioning is switched on, which is an easy check in this sort of weather, if the car has A/C and it actually works. When cold air is demanded/supplied, within a short time (depending on ambient temp) the radiator fan or fans should come on continuously at low speed (not that furious/loud). If it/they come on intermittently at high speed (furious/loud), it's generally a good hint that low speed function has failed inside the fan. To test via the thermoswitch wiring, link connections on the loom plug as shown (assuming an A/C equipped car). Thermoswitch usually found 100mm or so above bottom hose connection to radiator. Quite common for wire breakages adjacent to this loom connector, so worth getting eyeballs on it even if you don't do link tests.2 points

the truth about electric cars
2 pointsThis is a US document so US Factors of Safety so not the UK or EU standard. I know he is only the Program Manager of the Space Shuttle and not a UK person with Arts degree but here is what he says..... ( 1100% Factor of Safety for lifts aka elevators, ground equipment 400%. It is worrying that aircraft is 50%. One would not want to be travelling with a Rugby team. Nowhere, in any scenario, is the FoS as low as 20%.............. https://blogs.nasa.gov/waynehalesblog/2008/12/16/post_1229459081779/ Standards for factors of safety are all over the place. Most famously, the standard factor of safety for the cables in elevators is 11. So you could, if space allowed, pack eleven times as many people into an elevator as the placard says and possibly survive the ride. For many applications, 4 is considered to be a good number. In the shuttle program the standard factor of safety for all the ground equipment and tools is 4. When I was the Program Manager for the Space Shuttle, there were a number of times when a new engineering study would show that some tool either could be exposed to a higher maximum load than was previously thought, or that the original calculations were off by a small factor, or for some reason the tool could not meet the FS of 4. In those circumstances, the program manager – with the concurrence of the safety officers – could allow the use of the tool temporarily – with special restrictions – until a new tool could be designed and built. These “waivers” were always considered to be temporary and associated with special safety precautions so that work could go forward until the standard could once again be met with a new tool.2 points

Digital Switchover 2025 - End of Landlines just 2 years away
Actually that date is the finish deadline for the switchover, it's been happening for quite some time. At previous job I was involved quite heavily in the switchover since this affected personal alarms for old folk and the vulnerable and there has been a sizable project underway for a good 5yr. BT/Openreach has been quietly switching over exchanges all that time. There is a planned progression but also if any analogue exchange failed they were switched rather than repaired.2 points

the truth about electric cars
2 pointsBut how many well designed EV's are there? Given many families desire for SUV style EV's there's currently little incentive on the manufacturers to save weight. Surely the concerns about the ability of multi-storey car parks to cope with a mostly EV population are not just scare mongering?2 points

Software Updates Mk4
2 pointsThat's true of the software version of the infotainment system, but to see the software version of the other electronic modules in the car (of which there are many, sometimes 30+) you need to use a diagnostic scan tool such as VCDS or OBD11.2 points

2 pointsBefore I took up my Executive Officer position HMC&E I did a stint as an AO with DoT and I recall we used The Forth Law as that was the damage ratio.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_power_law So a 10% higher weight is nearly 50% more damage, that should capture those heavy EVs, and Chelsea tractors etc.2 points

the truth about electric cars
2 pointsGovernments have to collect taxes to run infrastructure and have a framework that is voted through parliament by our representatives. Tax policy changes like charging diesels extra road tax once discovered they were far more polluting than initially thought ie good on CO2 but bad on NOX, PMs etc. Always tough when policy pivots. Agree, and a Mr Jazzer HUNT says the UK is in a bad place with huge interest payments of £100B a year on its £2.6T debt (and that does not include the estimated £2T of future public servant pensions which have no fund to be paid from and are paid from the UK's current account). https://www.irishtimes.com/business/2023/09/07/uk-said-to-be-low-on-options-for-escaping-its-29tn-debt-trap/ https://www.pensions-expert.com/DB-Derisking/Public-sector-pension-bill-exceeds-UK-GDP-for-the-first-time?ct=true Taxes need to be collected by the UK people are already paying more tax as a percentage of income, something like 47% when income tax and indirect taxes are factored together. As I have said I have no problem pay road tax on my EV but still have not heard an effective way of collecting tax on the electrical power I put in it.2 points

Garage full of goodies!
1 pointSo, after a lot of searching, and a couple of bum-clenching clicks ordering from places I'd never heard of, I have everything I need... Except a day off without rain to do the work! AutoDoc have been great - not the quickest but prices (on a Monday with the 40% discount) are insane and easily better than anywhere else. Everything I've ordered, has been delivered. No substitutions, no mistakes. The only hiccup is that they mark orders as picked up by the courier several days before the courier actually collects them. The ARB was from a site called MLPerformance, another one I'd never heard of but it was 15% cheaper than anywhere else, and when I got the dispatch notifications, it actually came from Euro Car Parts. Don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but in the leaflet with the ARB, it specifically says their TUV approval only counts if you fit front and back. Strange when it's such a common job. Anyway, next thread when it's all done with before & after pics!1 point

Energy Saving Trust (Scotland) loan
That makes for painful reading. So I eventually spoke to someone today, presumably the call centre as they needed to call someone else to discuss before they could answer me further. The lady I spoke to was very apologetic and helpful however I felt like my concerns weren't really addressed. I did however find out that my application is on day 11 so was told that it would most likely be next week but then of course there is no guarantee of that plus the additional 3-5 working days for the funds to arrive. I suspect that the dealer will be fed up by that point and trying to renegotiate the deal.1 point

Battery problem again
1 point@langers2kthe fault keeps coming back and they can be deleted after some time . I don't think they are related with temperature. I saw other time temperature was higher and there were no faults after scanning. Another thing is, when I was checking my scan back up, i saw i had these faults June 2022. So, it means, they are not occuring because of me being changing the codes/options or so on. They could be generic fault.1 point

Cleaning a smelly aircon Fabia mk2
Today I decided to finally look at properly addressing my smelly aircon. The problem is common. When you turn off your aircon, an awfull smell fills the cabin a few minutes later, particularly noticeable for the front passenger. This is because water condensed on the evaporator surface warms up allows a resident bacteria soup to become active and start farting as they multiply. I have a RHD car with climate control so they may be slight differences. I used a cheap aircon cleaner (bomb) about £4 from the usual places. Some may disagree with step 3 but this is what I did. Step 1. Remove the expanded polystyrene cover (stiff fibre cover on later models) in the passenger footwell. Pulling down carefully to avoid breaking it, if it isn't broken already. Step 2. Remove the pollen filter, pictures and instructions to do this are elsewhere on the forum. Maybe some kind soul will post a link. Clean out debris inside the housing, mainly tree/plant seeds in my case. Wet strong kitchen roll paper is what I used with some disinfectant. Only limited access is possible but removed/cleaned what I could. Step 3. Refit the bottom filter support bracket/seal but without the pollen filter. Step 4. Ignition on, turn on recirc, switch to Econ (no A/C). Check the recirc flap is open. This is the hatched flap in the pic below, under the housing in the top of the passenser footwell towards the door side Locate the aircon bomb using best Heath Robinson skills so it points directly at the recir opening. Step 5. Start engine, re-check recirc on, fan on medium, econ mode (a/c off), temperature to low. Set the bomb off spraying directly at the recirc intake and close all doors/windows. Leave for 5-10 minutes, turn off the engine and leave for a further 5-10 minutes. Step 6. Refit the pollen filter. In my case as it was relatively new I just cleaned it up with a vacuum cleaner. Step 7. Refit the polystyrene/fibe cover The reason I posted this is I never knew for sure where the recirc air intake was and previous attempts at using an aircon bomb without removing the footwell cover had not been that great at reducing the pong for very long. Only time will tell if this attempt is better.1 point

the truth about electric cars
1 pointI can cause a fight in an empty house. I like an argument as much as anyone, or a discussion or just here for the banter. The issue is Location location location and the Governments. Westminster / The UK Government as so out of touch it is unreal. Energy, Net Zero and all the rest, reneawables and much more. The Scottish Government is pretty crap, but there is no getting away with Scotland having resources per capita and the ability to generate electricity aplenty. Discussions about EV,s in England is also regional as far as infrastructure goes. The issue is not going away though. business and commerce and utilities need to be reducing emissions and reduce costs and even reduce road miles of products and staff and the pollution from that. There is nothing new on the horizon, just the vehicles the manufacturers have developed and think that they are going to manufacture in the next decade. Before a decade they need to start building the Euro 7 emission ICE vehicles.1 point

the truth about electric cars
1 pointMany Multi Storey car parks will be not fit for purpose in this day and age other than for smaller / lighter vehicles. Demolishing and recycling the materials and buiding back on the same site or elsewhere might be simply clever considering the changes in communities, work, shopping etc. Times change. There are terrible ones around, and ones that have been mothballed for years before ever being developed. There are ones that are considered to be ionic. Ironic more like. Monstrosities and not fit for purpose. http://insider.co.uk/news/plans-europes-largest-ev-charging-285430291 point

MK1 Octavia Laurin Klement wheels value?
That's about what I thought. I'm selling the car they are pictured on (our old elegance) but intend on keeping the wheels to go back on the 1 owner L&K we've bought. Reason for swapping in the short term is the tyres on the elegance wheels are almost new whereas the L&K ones are 10 years old!1 point

DSG 7-speed gearbox complete failure - are Skoda UK likely to pick up repair costs?
A used DQ381 will cost between £1200 - £1500 plus fitting and oil service. Just beware that there was a Technical bulletin issues which prompt the dealers to update the software which in turned lead to many DQ381 failing. The resolution going i think is to change the pump and filter at the same time of the software update. Pity yours hasnt got the DQ250 as Im upgrading mines to a DQ500 and will be up for sell in the next few weeks, I have the TVS stage 3 software on the DQ2501 point

the truth about electric cars
1 pointManufacturers have a Fleet Average co2 figure to meet and are using partners with EV,s to achieve this figure. Legalised cheating. The EV Manufacturers & the ICE manufacturers would be stuffed if the EV,s registered were checked at 3 years to see their average kWh efficiency. There are too many inefficient EV,s about and manufacturers more concerned on selling them on 0-60 (62 mph) 100 kph etc. Big fat big battery cars that people are buying for there sportiness even though they are never taking them overseas. As it is the Manufacturers are on a bit of a fight back. German ones going to side with British. http://autocar.co.uk/car-news/electric-cars/industry-calls-ev-grants-build-demand-zev-mandate The UK Government backing JLR and a Battery factory is a pith take when you look at the weight of their EV,s and Hybrids the batteries are for going in.1 point

Window Seal Failure
1 pointInside or outside of the glass? Hard to tell from the photos. If its outside they will say its been attacked by crows or magpies or an ice scraper, if its inside they will say its cosmetic damage, wear and tear and not a fault affecting the function of the vehicle.1 point

What have you done to your Superb III today?
I couldn't resist Kopacek's recent 22% of sale, so i added some "aero fins" to Gandalf's rear end....diffusser. Removed the diffuser so i could paint it gloss black, then the aero fins glued on as a single piece. As a result, my drag coefficient has dropped now and my fuel consumption has improved remarkably!! ....yeah, and pigs fly too!!!1 point

Garage full of goodies!
1 pointBit delayed updating this - did the fronts then went on holiday for a week I ended up doing them on the hottest day for bloody weeks, which didn't help my temper! Anyway, it went pretty much* as per the DIY threads. I bought a knuckle spreader on Amazon for a few quid which worked a treat. The 2x4 method for removing the strut worked well. *Refitting was not the reverse of removal... All the DIY threads and videos I'd seen just casually said you can compress the new spring a bit by hand to get the mount back on. Not with shorter shocks, you can't! Good job I had a set of spring compressors or that would have been a complete disaster. But, it's all done and it's an absolute dream to drive now. Really proves just how bad the OEM dampers are!1 point

Replacing Yeti
1 pointHi, It must be a couple of years ago since I visited Rufforth Auto Jumble near York the only distance covered in the meantime had been to hospitals. Apart from the usual 50mph stretch on the M1 it was mostly 70mph both ways with cruise control engaged; what an absolutely delightful car our Yeti is to own & drive. I didn't want anything but I returned home about £60 less in the pocket with a load of goodies; I always end up buying urgent items I didn't know I needed. Here's to many more years of Yeti enjoyment. Kind regards, Colin.1 point

Anyone know what this might be for?
It will be an EX emergency services vehicle most likely. if you take a look at the below link it’s called a flex siren and allows the speaker to be located somewhere remote but the actual output a bit closer to the bonnet. https://www.vehiclebodyfittings.co.uk/products/siren-flute-tube?_pos=5&_sid=578122236&_ss=r this siren flute will be what you are seeing behind the grille I would assume. when you say a small button on the steering coloumn it would have been a bullhorn or ptt button. And got any photos of the lights in the headlamps?1 point
