  1. It makes a mockery of what they said in 2019 and what they were voted in on "We will lead the global fight against climate change by delivering on our world-leading target of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as advised by the independent Committee on Climate Change". I think the car industry will dictate what vehicles are for sale in the UK. Maybe import some new old stock even that's been sat in a field somewhere for a couple of years. All announced in what amounted to a party political broadcast before mentioning it in Parliament as is convention and after Parliament has risen for a two week jolly. Apparently Lindsey Hoyle is livid.
  2. https://www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/control-of-the-vehicle.html 122 Coasting. This term describes a vehicle travelling in neutral or with the clutch pressed down. It can reduce driver control because engine braking is eliminated vehicle speed downhill will increase quickly increased use of the footbrake can reduce its effectiveness steering response will be affected, particularly on bends and corners it may be more difficult to select the appropriate gear when needed. Only guidelines (no "must" or "must not"), no penalties. Not illegal.
  3. It was a tory party pledge in their manifesto no matter who said it. Boris was all for ULEZ as well until someone else continued with it. He was all for the EU as well at one point. It's hard to believe a word they say. If they told me today is a Wednesday I'd have get confirmation from a reliable source
  4. Sunak never said it, that was a couple of PMs ago ! The Tories saw that ulez effect at the last by-election and that’s the straw they’ve grabbed.
  5. I think you are all being hard on Richie, he has just upped the heat pump UK government subsidy up from £5k to £7.5k, wow. I can upgrade my heating system, pay even less on my monthly energy bills, and the UK government, ie you the other tax payers, are going to pay for it, and the value of that system just goes on to the overall value of house. Winner, winner chicken dinner. Those of us with big detached house can slip that noisy air heat pump great big thingamabob down the side part of the house, that bit we rarely go, keep the odd ladder and let tradesmen in rather than come through the front door. Thank you PM, and (wooden) cabinet for giving the already well oiled a way of adding thousands to house value and cutting energy bills all with UK government money, I will raise a glass if PIMMS or maybe a brandy tonight. God knows where UK Gov getting the money from, suppose money that could have gone to the NHS or something but hey ho, cheers boys !
  6. Hi all. Today, after oil change, I got the new engine cover. It is entirely out plastic with some insulation.
  7. This is an electric car puzzle. The e-4orce 4x4 xtrail: Nissan claims you should see fuel economy of around 44mpg with CO2 levels from 143g/km. The petrol engine exists purely as a generator and is not connected to the wheels in any way. It converts petrol into electricity, which is sent either to a small battery or directly to the electric motor, depending on how urgently it’s needed. My 2.0 litre diesel has CO2 level of 136g/km and can return 60mpg
  8. Had a play with the AI regenerative tools in Photoshop. A before and after below.
  9. I have finally allowed one of the myriad French companies desperate to persuade clients to get free or close to free energy improvements so they can hoover up more of the governments billions allocated to subventions. I was working with this guy anyway (I used his guys to do my taping and jointing). What I will be getting free or perhaps with a small contribution is. A reversible heat pump air conditioning unit supplied and installed by my neighbour who I was going to buy mine from anyway to install myself. A Ballon Thermodynamique which I think you call a heat pump hot water cylinder. 360mm of blown insulation across the loft area (71m2) 80 mm (I think) if extruded polystyrene insulation on the sous-sol ceiling (71m2 again) to stop heat losses from the floor above. I think there might be a new triple glazed window to replace the only one that is not double glazed and maybe something towards a new front door, it was spoken of but I wont know until I get the devis. Extruded polystyrene insulation (thickness unknown but the equivalent to 150mm of fibre glass) to all the outside walls on both levels with aluminium window reveals and window cill extenders covered with a mesh textile mesh and then spray rendered in the colour of my choice. The latter I will have to make some contribution to but as my house is a wreck at present I was going to render the outside myself which would involve buying the machinery and scaffold towers etc to sell on afterwards, this external finish will be the one thing which will make my property 100 times more desirable than it currently looks. I could have had the internal insulation including the steel stud frame and dry lining for free, no contribution and whilst I would have done all that work anyway like the outside rendering I would have lost room space and at 71m2 it would become pokey, also I really like plasterboarding and can do it at my own pace. I can also have free solar panels but I'm going to leave that a year or so in the hope that by then they will pay for the pergola on the side of the building to put them on. The government has allocated billions towards these energy saving initiatives but only a fraction of it is being taken up which they probably knew so they could make up whatever figure would please the electorate, its too much disruption for many people but has come at a good time for me. And the crazy thing is although I am living here full time and intend to see out my retirement here it is classified as a second home because I am maintaining the Hôtel in Picardie as my principal residence to avoid CGT when I sell it. So the free or subsidised (dependant on income) energy saving measures are available for second homes and also to renters which does make sense.
  10. Apologies: I always believed it to be illegal because you used to fail your Driving test if you did it. But there is a little bit of legislation if you happen to have an accident and it;s proven to be the cause. https://www.leaseloco.com/blog/the-potential-fines-and-vehicle-damage-of-coasting-in-neutral But there is no specific offence.
  11. I was fairly certain of that but I always like to give the fantasists the opportunity to disabuse me. Its one of my myriad failings, not being able to just smile and keep quiet when someone trots out the old "it's illegal", not good when you live in a country where people never think for themselves and challenge what they are being told (the education system makes them like that) and love to tell others that they risk (not) honky tonk years in prison for whatever it is they are doing.
  12. All academic. The car makers will only produce hybrids and EVs by 2030, even if they are luke warm ones like my Arkana. Rishi speech at 1630 today was so little boy lost. Who has his ear ? Must be a bit of the Express, Mail and Telegraph and a bit of GB News and Talk Radio thrown in to as it was a mishmash of directionless pandering which did a fantastic job of saying something to **** off just about everybody. Talk about an own goal. Keep it up Rishi. Even though I just fitted a new gas boiler might get one of those heat pumps as well so I can have the choice of which system to use depending on the price of electricity and gas at any time, nice. Octopus was doing one for free, under certain circumstances, at £5k subsidy, what can I get for £7.5k bung ? Maybe have downstairs on the heat pump and upstairs on the gas boiler. The choices. Ten years of subsidising electric cars and home charging points and now massive subsidies for home heating, they really are the people who just cannot stop giving, where do they get all the money from I wonder ?
  13. Yes, funnily enough I've just returned from the dealer about 30 minutes ago. I was booked in for a service and when I dropped it off I said there were a few 'bugs' I'd like them to look at, note that I intentionally didn't start by saying I wanted a software update. This then lead to a conversation about the infotainment system restarting and the ACC issue which the receptionist seemed to be well aware of and said she thought a software update might be required!. I then produced a printed copy of the TPI document listed on page 12 of this thread with my particular issues highlighted. Long story short they have applied the software update and no issues experienced on the (admittedly very short) 8 mile drive home. They have also sorted the Primary User issue and setup the online services for me. Very happy with the overall service received tbh.
  14. I thought, ironically, this brings us into line with the eu. Isn’t their new build ban date already 2035 ?
  15. Rather like the old joke when it was rumoured that NZ was going to convert to driving on the right - to ease the transition, vehicles with registrations ending with odd numbers would transition on Monday - even numbers on Tuesday.
  16. Was indeed an option, but think it was dealer fit, as it came with the 'original accessories' booklet - but don't quote me on this as 100% correct. Ta.
  17. I had some of the earlier 6 speed DQ250 gear boxes, thought it was a good pair up when it was either a 5 speed manual or the 6 speed wet DQ250 but then I had a SEAT with the 2 litre 140 hp Common rail diesel and wonder why it was slower and much thirstier than the 1.9 PD, that when I realised diesel had had their day compared to the new turbo petrols with 7 speed DSG/EDCSs that were coming up about 13 years ago. DQ200 needed no 40k servicing, oil change etc, seemed more efficient and was a lot lighter than the DQ250, could not handle the bigger torque ie over 250 Nm, although they can actually handle 380 Nm but probably not for 400k kms as was the original design brief. Audis/VAGs etc started getting the better DQ380, then DQ381 from 2015 but Skoda, no doubt for reasons of being cheap, continued to use the DQ250 gearbox which I regard as a bit of an old nail and they are all 7 speed I think. I rate the DQ250 so poorly, it was OK up until 8 years ago when the DQ380 etc appeared, the DQ500 was already around but overkill for a two wheel drive Superb and as well as the 7 speeds the DQ200 and DQ380/1 just were newer more advanced gearboxes and the DQ250 just got left as the cooking auto gearbox. I some tests it even produced worse mpg than the manuals whereas the 7 speeds were the other way usually showing mpg a couple better than the manual and even lower CO2 as well. Year of manufacture does not indicate a car is using the latest tech gearboxes or anything else. If VAG were still finding buyers for tech that is several years old then they will, and have.
  18. Or the very real risk that some pedestrians will 'take the gap' between vehicles because they're going so slowly.
  19. Mine was looking the same. It was changed under warranty.
  20. Welcome. What TSi a 1.4 , 1.5 ACT or 2.0l. Your car will have come from the factory with VW508 00 / 509 00 which is 0w 20 FS IV because that is what they started using. Unless possibly a 1.4 TSI. That is the recommended oil not the VW504 00 / 507 00 5w 30 FS III. Please yourself. Are you up near Moray @MorayDavid? Maybe your mechanic actually knows the VW Engines and oils. ? What about your other service items, have you got a AWD so Haldex to service. Spark Plugs to replace, brake fluid to change? Is there nothing like this in the engine compartment?
  21. On my own car 2.0 TDI DSG, running ECO mode makes no difference to how the DPF regens operate, they don't happen any sooner or later from my experience. Regards
  22. No damage whatsoever. Fingers crossed it's replaced. Booked in for a couple of weeks time so will update with the outcome.
  23. Unfortunately, chargers are currently out of stock. Suppliers have updated the PCB design, and now it doesn't work in the car. I'm currently searching for the right components and hope that chargers will be available for sale again soon.
  24. I use Liqui Moly SuperDiesel on mine and Supremium Diesel from Wynns when travel to Bulgaria and Greece where diesel fuel is crap and car looses power. Both gave great results. On previous Volvo I used them for 5(105k km) years tens of cans literally. wynns helps with slightly longer distances between regens. When I bought the car (second hand) was a bit down on power and Liqui Moly helped alot to restore it. vcds shows dpf in a great shape I'm a big fan
  25. EBC on autodoc thinks you have 280x22mm front brakes, but compare the following photos of the front brake calipers to be sure. 280x22mm front brakes 1ZF (ATE brake system) 288x25mm front brakes 1ZE (ATE brake system)
  26. Because they are upselling. What is wrong with the detergents in the diesel you buy? You could pay more and buy Premium Diesel if you wanted to. Arnold Clark,s call centre guy offered me fuel additive at the service for my Electric car. Not the brains they are born with.
  27. (I'm away this week. I haven't read the last 2 pages, only 63) Scrapping 2030 pure ICE ban is nothing more than a political move in a bid for more votes. The 2035 date for zero tailpipe emission vehicle hasn't changed. As we discussed last week, the original 2030 requirement was not defined to begin with. The car industry are already well ahead with electrified ICE vehicles. Overall announcement, with increased funding for heat pump installs, I think this is a good move. Less money spent on government "research" and more money actually doing things. But back peddling would only influence my voting preference one way.
  28. This is the best course of action, IMO.
  29. Carpet in. And made my way down the country to get some bits off of this. Namely... Full 312mm 256mm setup off of it. And the front lines to boot as they're nearly new. Better than what I have. Did try getting braided lines but mtec had em on backorder, so cancelled it. Was going to paint them silver. But they were mostly green, and I had the correct green so. Quick hit of green. Also got 256mm rear heatshields to go on too. Getting there.
  30. Nope, 5E0035812A DOES NOT have BT module. The ones that have are other Bolero units - 5E0035819A, 5E0035820A, 5E0035840A, 5E0035842A.
  31. Rishi is going to help those already with EV,s and that need to public charge by not having too many new EV,s compared to the Infrastructure for charging and the pathetic power generation and transmission that the National Grid can supply. 'Simply clever' from the PM who has just made him a laughing stock among other leaders, like those in the US today. Scotland's First Minister has been there. He just makes himself the laughing stock by opening his mouth. Has a country to lead with plenty energy though.
  32. This us a risky road that I already went. If you really want to go that route, get your unit from ebilaen. And don't go under the 4gigs ram model. Their units will show the drive mode. But beware, call qualitiy is really crappy.and these units don't understand s...t when you want to use vocal commands on android auto. They beep as to register your command but just don't understand a word so basically Android auto is useless. There is a huge post on the forum on these units.
  33. Hi mate, someone put a link into one of the threads ages ago and I've kept it bookmarked. https://aus.skoda.com.au/request/vin-checker
  34. It is a 7 speed wet clutch DSG with the AWD so a DQ381. Service at 40,000 miles if you want, or before 80,000 miles but maybe tell them you want the filter replaced. Is the Brake Fluid now at each 2 years and not first at 3 years then each 2. (Mk4 Fabia are showing at each 2 years, they have gone back to what things were over a decade ago.) @EnterName There is nothing that has it @ 8 years or the DQ250,s at 4 years other than the error on Skoda Web Pages. It is by miles not years. There are some crazy price differences being quoted these days. Especially with DSG Servicing.
  35. Many thanks for replies. Managed to get it into a local garage. It was a glow plug that needed replacing which they did. Diagnostic test £62.50 labour £45.83 Glow plug £17.44. VAT £25.15 Total £150.92 Not sure if this is is expensive for the job or not, however as I needed the car, and didn’t feel safe driving it with the amber light on, I was happy to pay this, especially as they did it the same day.
  36. VW were not born yesterday. There are world regions were they still build and sell just what people want. 1.4 TSI,s with a 8 speed automatic. North America, Canada, Australia and some countries in between. They just had to be honest about the emissions & not any problems then. DQ380,s were short lived as to what they went in. The DQ381,s longevity is in question and that ridiculous service regime might get changed anytime soon. VW Group are struggling for DSG,s for mild hybrids for the Mild Hybrids or PHEV,s and have just DQ200-e or DQ400-e,s.
  37. No worries. You certainly could get a factory fit towbar on a Mk1 Fabia, the wiring is shown in the circuit diagrams , but whether sold in the UK with "1D1 - with trailer hitch" I have no data on either way. @AnnoyingPentium do you have any info on this in your brochure collection? See here for lots of mk1 useful pdfs: https://www.briskoda.net/forums/files/file/76-mk1-fabia-workshop-manuals/
  38. @Graham Butcher Turning off an ignition switch is a whole different story. The VW Group vehicles that do shut down the engine to coast to a halt do that, no ignition off, and have for several years now. You need to go google again.
  39. No the air conditioning set as I normally have it. To be fair the battery isn’t 100%. 6.5 years old. However when the battery is low i usually get the power consumption is high message, never the engine must be running message. I only ever see that during a regen.
  40. Well, I always did think that in reality the 2030 date was way too ambitious, but then it was just like the blonde buffoon to make these grand gestures before the world stage without actually thinking things through, or perhaps it never really was his intention, maybe he thought it was yet another stick he could use later to pass the blame onto others, who knows.....
  41. Sounds good to me. Thanks a lot for your help @toot
  42. https://www.globalfleet.com/en/safety-environment/europe/features/newest-diesel-engines-clean-air?a=SBL09&t[0]=Energy&t[1]=Emissions&curl=1 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/09/03/glasgow-lez-low-emission-zone-nitrogen-dioxide-pollution/
  43. If the air filter is clean and dry then a shake / dunt and blow it through or vacuum can be enough. A Pollen filter is cheap, but clean and disinfect the area. Vacuum. The spark plugs should be good for 40,000 miles. The brake fluid can be tested, but if not changed for several years it should maybe be replaced.
  44. To point 1: ATE and experienced users of this forum are in different opinion. But with TRW system you should grease them always; but correct grease should be used. Plenty of forums in Russian about this- guys are fighting with sensitive nonstop sticking brakes of various Korean, French and Japanese cars- and looks like TRW PFG 110 is best grease for pins.
  45. What's the age and mileage?
  46. Hi all, sorry for the late update, if anyone is wondering what was wrong with the car, it was the wiring in the car door as expected. It didn’t take long for the mechanic to fix it at all but he said that it’ll happen again sometime in the future.
  47. Not long come back from a couple of months in Extremadura. Its the first time I've spent much time there and now consider it my 2nd favourite place in Spain. 100Kms due west of Madrid through to the Portuguese border. Its green, wide open spaces and interesting mountains makes for great driving country. Very few tourists, Spanish or N European, plenty of little hostals to stay in. Ive no specific routes for you but it is an area overlooked and worth making the trip. Some basic Spanish is useful for ordering food, but the tourist offices in just about every village can speak English.
