Škoda 105/120 rear brake upgrade
2 pointsHi @DemoVrh: As nta16 says above, better tyres may give you an immediate improvement through either a wider contact patch, better sidewall stability or just a stickier rubber compound. You don't say why you want to change to disc brakes, what problem you are really trying to solve? I assume your car is driving on normal roads. The motorsport homologation paper A-5193 for the Skoda 120LS shows you all the authorised upgrades for building a 120 factory specification rally car in 1984. This car retains drum brakes at the rear and the use of good brake material combined with the front discs was good enough for motorsport where brakes are used much harder. Unless you want to build a Group B 130, it is cheaper and easier to check your tyres, service the rear shoes and maybe change the shoe material. You may find they are out of adjustment and never been doing any work. Good luck.2 points

2015 Octavia DSG and other faults .. very confusing
Without meaning to teach you to suck eggs, have you tried keeping the battery disconnected for a good 30-40 minutes? Will let everything shut down and reset properly. Might also be worth taking the battery out and hooking it up to an external charger overnight just to rule that out (I understand it's a new battery but still worth a shot) Also spotted a voltage too low fault in the Brake module. Low voltage can cause all kinds of strange issues on the MQB platform. I'd recommend charging the battery overnight, then putting it back in and clearing ALL faults and trying again.2 points

Fabia-III 1.2 TSI , Buying advice... ?
The trouble I feel is, many many people will have had small VW Group cars from earlier times when 4 or 5 years was the advice and felt the need to take that advice onboard after hearing bad tales of idler pulley failures leading to big engine repair bills, I certainly looked after my wife's 2002 VW Polo 1.4 16V BBY engine, and taking what sounded like sensible precautions worked for me and so for her car we paid for 2 "belt" changes, I advised my older daughter to do the same with her 2009 SEAT Ibiza SC 1.4 16V. I examine the cambelt at every service and have done since it was 3 years old, but I'm thinking that 10 years is maybe enough and I'll aim to get the belt changed later this year. Being realistic, I'd expect that we will move this car on when it is 15 years old, so if I get the cam belt replaced, I'll have had some benefit from doing that work. I'm just trying to minimise risk while not "scattering" cash. You rightly feel sore about being con'd into changing that belt at the 5 years point, but you should not now feel the need to revisit this area for the rest of the time that you have already suggested/hinted that your wife will keep this car. Just different situations for different owners, my suggestion was aimed at a new owner of a used car.2 points

My ŠKODA App - Send Route
1 pointI am able to send maps from the App to my car at present. I did have an occasion when the car decided I wasn't the main driver and when I noticed I had to reset things. Could this be happening to other people? This would stop them from receiving updates to the satnav via the App.1 point

Someone mentioned an 8.3.0 for Android. 8.2.0 is the latest on iPhone. I have 25.1 Maps and it didn't work this morning. I am hoping that very soon it will work. I thing as mentioned elsewhere it is a back end server update problem and getting them all synced.1 point

Oil leak 1 litre every 500 miles
1 pointQuick update. Managed to take glow plug 1,2 and 4 off without any issue. Glow plug 3 however is just spinning round and round. Im guessing its snapped. I was very careful and spray lots of wd40. Im going to pour the b12 in the 3 plug holes. Let it do its job and hope that glow plug 3 doesn't cause a major issue once its all back together again.1 point

Nominal charging voltage 1.2TSI ?
I did find this, which supports what I measured : Expected battery voltage (for lead acid) Idle (~800 RPM): Voltage starts around 13.5V, which may be just enough to maintain the battery. Cruising (~2500 RPM): Voltage rises to 14.3–14.4V, ideal for charging. High RPM (>3000 RPM): Voltage is capped at 14.4V by the voltage regulator to prevent overcharging.1 point

Nominal charging voltage 1.2TSI ?
About 70,000 miles. CM = Control module (OBD2 terminology) = ECU.1 point
-
Nominal charging voltage 1.2TSI ?
Voltage regulator should make the output voltage independent of rpm, so not sure what's going on there. Suggests that alt isn't able to output enough current at low revs to maintain its setpoint, with minimal load. Possible indication of too-short carbon brushes. What mileage on car?1 point

Nominal charging voltage 1.2TSI ?
Quick update. I just checked with a calibrated multimeter. The OBD2 CM voltage is ~0.1V lower than the meter reading at the battery terminals (which I guess is the best point seeing as this is what the battery is being charged at). So, at least I can trust the OBD2 CM reading. With the engine first started and "on choke" (elevated RPM), the meter reads 14.4 or 14.5 and the CM reads 14.3V or 14.4V. After 30s or so, the engine idles at normal speed and the meter reads 13.9/CM reads 13.8V. if I rev it up, it raises to the ~14.5V (meter/CM). if the alternator setpoint is 14.5V, this all sounds correct, if maybe a couple of 0.1 or 0.2V too high at the battery.1 point
-
Nominal charging voltage 1.2TSI ?
Thanks for all the responses. It is a 2014 CBZA without stop/start (no AGM/EFB) and I would, also, have expected the voltage to be ~13.8V, hence my raising the question. I know the Mk3 raises voltage to "load the alternator" under engine braking/overrun scenarios, maybe to reduce fuel consumption and add engine braking but I've not seen the Mk2 doing this. I had seen other posters saying they had ~14.5V so I wasn't immediately panicked about it. I should have said but the voltage was read via OBD2, from the ECU (CM) and also from the OBD2 device (they both agreed, voltage wise). Since the ECU is connected to the battery, I thought that what it sees is maybe a bit lower than what the alternator is putting out (but same as the battery voltage) because of the voltage drop between alt and battery. I've read that the maximum charging voltage for a lead acid battery is 14.7V so it is within that but I don't remember it being this high previously although I might be getting it mixed up with my Mk3. If anyone else can confirm that the charge voltage is this high on their Mk2, that'd be appreciated, especially given that the car had a new battery yesterday after the problems with it not turning off with the ignition key (!) and I'd like to not be cooking the new battery.1 point

Will I get away with it?
1 pointAny oil is better than no oil! But seriously, these engines seem quite robust by modern standards and it sounds like yours has been serviced quite frequently, plus you've had the belt done. Key thing is to keep on top of it and do regular checks on the levels as it gets older. You'll probably be fine.1 point

Also being RHD, try to avoid locking the doors before disconnecting the battery. It's really awkward/risky to pull the bonnet release handle if the passenger door is closed & locked with no power. Bit of a flaw of the RHD models.1 point

Battery change
1 pointIt doesn't work like that - a new battery needs to be coded in, regardless of whether it is the exact same make, model and batch as the old one. If your car is a late Mk3.5 you'll enter the world of ODIS as it's a locked gateway. If it's earlier than that then you can use any decent system (VCDS, OBD11, etc). OBD11 can be had for around £70 (last time I checked) and will allow you to make the required 'adaptation'.1 point

1 pointReports now of those having issues due to few events of the engine firing up or firing up cold and not running for long or even getting up to the good operating oil temperature. New or improved hubs announced, Government EV Loans in Scotland and free & no longer free public charging places..
@wyx087 Drop Off Only was painted there before an chargers were put there and just left. Knowing when offpeak is and what the tariff is if they are for the public to use would be very useful. No wucking furries really as not using them for slow charging but if installed using public money and they should be giving free charging for 2 years i will find out. There is a shortage of AC chargers within the town.1 point

Skoda Superb 3 - Infotainment problem after using old version of VCDS 12.12.3.0
Maybe post a full autoscan from your legit HEX-V2 and the latest 25.3 VCDS version... It will probably give more information.1 point

Autocruise retrofit on 2024 FAbia Colour edition
What a pleasant fellow you are. As I have said, both here and in reply to your message on LinkedIn, I left Skoda in 2012, so my dealer experience stopped then. Both the MK3 and MK4 have required dealer level diagnostic equipment to program it so I have not been able to offer retrofits for those vehicles.1 point

Oil leak 1 litre every 500 miles
1 pointI have been driving in Eco mode taking advantage of coasting when ever possible, so went back to normal mode and engine braking was very noticeable, so it may be a worn turbo? I now have it booked for a diagnostic test on 4th June as I don't want the oil flow becoming so bad, if it is getting into the combustion chambers and let a runaway engine develop.1 point

Scott And Alana's Yeti 4x4 Modifications And Adventures
This is a video that I found very fascinating while editing it. Before we went to Tixover Quarry I had a little browse on the Autel to see what live data I could see. Imagine what my geeky little mind was like when I found out it could get data from the Haldex! 😄 With that in mind, I plugged the Autel in while we were going around Tixover and recorded the data and overlaid it onto the video footage. For me, it really was fascinating to see how much and how little it was running in 4 wheel drive at different times around the quarry. 😁1 point

Oil leak 1 litre every 500 miles
1 pointNope, hers is used for daily work commute of 5-10 km. Stuck rings are a side effect of the direct injection due to increased carbon deposits. Often happening when the car is mainly used for short distances, gently driven and with long-life service intervals. First two perfectly apply for my wife’s car, and even though I was changing the oil every 10k km, the oil consumption increased over time until it started to use more oil between oil changes than the amount used for the actual service.. 😅 There is official procedure which KIA/Hyundai have for such cases. I can share it, if someone is interested.1 point

What is causing ABS ESC error (Octavia Mk3 Tsi 14’)
Getting a full car controllers scan with a VW Group compliant tool, might have been the smarter first move, gives you a better idea of what the problem is or what the car is seeing the source of the problem is. Okay, I'd have expected it to be an ABS sensor - but in your case that assumption has not worked. Edit:- you will probably need to drive the car a short distance to clear the faults, although some will still remain until cleared using a scan tool, but should not now affect the car.1 point

Oil leak 1 litre every 500 miles
1 pointThe Vag TDI engines have had some issues with piston rings (at least on the Octavia version) which I guess is quite similar to the superb version. As you have a DPF in a diesel you are unlikely to see smoke from the exhaust if it's burning oil as the DPF will catch it. I would suggest to look for signs of oil just before the DPF or in the exhaust manifold somewhere. Best case your engine is burning it and they'll be no problems. But if there's too much oil to fully burn it'll build up in the DPF and can cause it to crack when it Regens... I have a 2024 TDI 2l 200PS engine in my superb which uses 1L of oil every 7.5k km since new. (Currently at 37k km) My previous Octavia TDI would do 30k km without changing the oil.1 point

Skoda App maps not sending routes to car
So just on the off-chance, I gave it another go this afternoon - it WORKED! Tried again a hour or so later - STILL WORKING! I haven't done anything to settings on my phone or the car. It was successful with the engine running as it was sent, then again later when the car was parked - the route arrived as soon as the satnav started. So hopefully the issue, whatever/wherever it was is fixed. Watch this space....1 point

1 pointWill start doing the doors soon. Today I did the boot lid. Added butyl mats in the cavities with a lot of flat surfaces. The trim got some butyl mats and acoustic foam on top.1 point
