VW Emissions Scandal Thread V2

Hyundai / Kia, Suzuki, build in Continental Europe and pay plenty and employ many,

Honda, Nissan, BMW / MINI in the UK.

The only tit for tat issues are tits in the EU Commissions and Governments that are so far up their own backsides that they forget who pay their salaries, expenses and bribes.

If people were really smart they'd ban big cities. They're the cause of all these problems.

The commercial media are compromised in how hard they go, as usual.

It's left to the lawyers

Ref.  to lawyers raises an interesting point. Has anyone heard from the lawyers who touted to act  for owners. I  " joined " one firm from whom one has heard bu..er all and only  useless replies to e mails sent to them asking what is going on. Not much would seem to be situation and certainly not keeping  clients informed of anything.

As long as there are more issues being raised in various jurisdictions they will probably wait in order to include all opinions is my guess.

Facts need to be established and finalised perhaps

Think years rather than months

shouldn't  beyond the realms of hope apart from good practice to keep clients informed of progress ( if any ) or intentions for which complete silence is pretty poor substitute

Only 2 days ago it was being reported the the Consumer Rights Organisation 'myRight' are raising a Legal Test Case in Germany against the VW Group.

So we will see how that goes.

Civil cases follow after criminal ones, so it'll be years after the event before we see a resolution

.......unless the company declares it's surrender

Interesting article on the front of the Times today about diesel cars pumping out more nox than trucks and how the last 15 years of government tax incentives to encourage drives to go for the diesel option as the lower greenhouse co2 emissions of petrol.

Yes indeed.  What we already know that diesel cars, even of the last few years, are very polluting in terms of NOX and PMs, even compared to large truck (which when they have SCR systems are much cleaner in regard to NOX etc) ...  clip of Times article....

Modern diesel cars produce more than twice as much toxic gas as a lorry or bus of the same age, analysis has found.  There is less risk of inhaling dangerous levels of nitrogen oxides from standing beside a new lorry or bus with its engine running than standing beside a car, according to the research. The results strengthen the case for tougher pollution tests for cars, which will be debated this month by EU states. About 25,000 deaths a year in England can be linked to vehicle emissions, and nitrogen oxides from diesel engines are one of the main pollutants. They inflame the lungs, cause respiratory diseases such as asthma and have been..

South London road annual N02 pollution limit reached in just 5 days  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-38529928

the mounting evidence of the cost on public health might push forward the banning of diesel cars with SCR system ie the early deaths from NOX might save the government money but if the pollution is also causing early onset dementia then that has to be weighed against a scrappage scheme to get non-SCR diesels off urban streets and get them replaced with Diesels with SCR, EV or petrol cars or hybrid of two of the alternatives.

So tell me why Oxford St in London is about the most polluted road in London for Nox and yet it is bus only...

Sounds rather fishy to me that report - "new lorry (with SCR?) vs car (what year / type / age etc.) - I ask as the link doesn't seem to work for me.

It is the vehicles in the surrounding streets to distances of kilometers not just on the street.  Affected by prevailing winds and can take hours to clear if the wind is light.  It is interesting to see the readings change when Paris bans cars on some days and the air quality improves over the hours to being half as polluted.  As I understand it larger trucks have to have the certified filter to enter the london low Emission Zone which is much of the area within the M25 and much of the trucks run Ad-Blue SCR system as well and have to be no more than 10 years old though all this maters are under review and expected to meet even more demanding regulations which will be bought in by 2020.

Now hybrids have to pay the congestion charge as well since July we can expect to see more Leaf, Tesla and the Zoe EVs and EV vans as they become make more economical sense.

So why concentrate and quote Oxford Street when  the streets which run parallel are MORE toxic.

I would not focus on Oxford Street as it is central London and where ever is on the wrong side of the prevailing wind.....

Birmingham and Manchester not too good at the moment Leeds OK.

An overall ban on diesels from cities (like my yeti with its cheating chip) just isn't going to happen, it would be political suicide.

What is more likely is congestion charges as in London with cameras reading license plates and drivers paying a sliding scale of charges depending on pollution levels.

Eg: Newer ad-blue diesels charged less the older models. We have the technology to do this.

Financial penalties work, discourages cars in cities, encourages public transport use and produces income for the city which they can invest in electric buses

That's the way it will go.

Now where did I put my bus pass!

Can the mayor deny diesels of a certain age, eg euro5, access to the CBD and would that be unpopular enough to see him off?.

Look back to what the Labour London Mayor said or what was said that has said just in December, it was about Euro 4 Emissions Diesels.

Does SCR on cars even have that much of an impact on pollution? I mean considering that cars like Mercedes shuts down SCR when ambient temperatur drops below 18C to protect its drivetrain. How does other cars do this?

I suspect they mainly shut it down at those temperatures  to reduce Adblue consumption, and because they can (sort of) get away with it. Nothing to do with protecting anything.

Figures I have seen show the NOX dropping by between half and to one tenth of levels the exhaust gas contains NOX pre treatment.

At what temperatures?
