Found a MQB example (Passat B8) where they needed to swap mirror motors to add the memory function: https://www.drive2.com/l/519860368680419510/

As expected, the originals have 3 wires (movement only) where as the replacements have more wires for movement and current position.

Time for me to count the wires going to the motor. See if it is a mirror or controller issue. Many Thanks

Sasha, would it be possible for you to PM me your long coding for your mirrors. Make sure I have them set up the same.

What is the correct torque for the wheel nuts on a 2015 vRS? and does it make a difference if you have spacers installed?

Not sure on the spacers.

Or in Newton meters 120NM

Brake work all done 🥳 now need to get it all clean again for Trax next weekend.

Gone for Aston Martin DB9 calipers, Pagid pads, Golf Clubsport discs, RS3 brake ducts, VBT carriers, HEL braided lines and new OEM VAG DOT4 fluid. Lovely 😁

Sasha guy on tyre recommendations was asking whether the Toyo Proxes were any good, perhaps you would check it out and comment on your personal experience, sure he would appreciate it. Thanks SHY.

Getting Oil change and Inspection warning flashing up on my dash so phone my local dealership (which is now run by Marshall's) and asked how much a oil change and inspection will cost, they came back with............£179!!! Are they having a laugh, how much is 15ltrs of oil £25?, oil filter £8-15? and would take less than a hour so they must be charge over £100 for an hourly rate day light robbery!!?

Your car needs 5.7 litres of oil and dealers typically charge £12 per litre so that is almost £70 just for the oil.:o

Absolutely don’t pay a penny more over £50 for oil (not 15 litres) and labour..... or buy 6 litres of oil and a filter, change it and carry out a diagnostic check yourself. That way it saves you worrying about the costs of a basic oil service, made possible by employing mechanics, paying business rates, wages, taxes, NI contributions and the hassles of running a so-called stealers, with all those grateful customers to cheer you up.

Tbh when it comes to oil changes I take mine to Skoda for £99 oil change as I cannot be doing with lying on my back in the freezing cold and soaking rain to save £50. I usually tie it in with other work and they discount it to the degree it pays for itself.

This seems to have disappeared from the Fixed price servicing page on the Skoda site now . Started out at £99, then went up to £119 earlier this year, and now disappeared from the site.

It's a bargain at £99 and like you say, not even worth doing it yourself. Hope dealers continue to offer it.

Now that does seem steep!

I bought mine the other day, 6L of oil and a filter is £40.

Skoda don’t offer it but I still get it at my dealer :)

So do you guys not bother about the service history when selling on the car anymore, i mean im all for changing the oil myself but just wonder about getting the service ticked off for the car for when i come to sell, it will have a regular service each or every other year (dont do massive amount of miles)??

I mean do most of you (if its out of warranty) not bother with getting the Skoda database up to date with your service and just keep invoices from past services(from either a specialist or normal garage) for when you sell on the car!?

You do start to wonder what with when i called a Skoda specialist today and they quoted me £85-100 for the same job!

As above, as long as my dealer continue to offer a £99 oil change I’ll take taking the car there as it’s barely worth saving the £50 and it gets a Skoda invoice for the folder to prove the full service history. The full dealer history may not matter to some buyers but it will to others. That’s not even the reason why I bother, the reason I bother is because at that price it’s not worth the effort and I always tie it in with some other work and we end up working a discount to the point it ends up costing me less than DIY.

All depends on circumstance.  For me, taking a car to a garage and asking them to do something is logistically a pain and at least takes a chunk of a day up, dropping it off, picking it up etc.

Doing an oil change I'll generally tie it in to when I'm seeing my parents ( they have a flat concrete drive), stick it on the ramps have it draining within 15 mins.  Have a cuppa and 30 mins later fill it back up.

So it's actually less disruption to my day as I'd be seeing them anyway.  Soon my garage will be clear and I'll be able to do it at home too.  I did one of my cars and my parents octy last weekend in fact and will hopefully do my vrs this weekend, before it does get cold outside as yeah, working in the cold changes the game a bit.

DIY gives you the chance to see what the so called 'tech's have missed. First oil change after I bought my previous mk2 vrs I noticed grease all over the undertray when I took it off. Traced it to the where the drive shaft bolts to the transmission housing. Skoda dealership had done the DMF/clutch for the previous owner and not done the bolts up properly and everyone was loose. On the current mk3 I have I got under to do the oil and when I came to take the undertray off the dealership that had done the last service hadn't even bothered to put the 3 bigger torx screws at the back of the tray back in.

Garages work on a price, they'll never spend the time that you will.

They also won't fix things, they'll just swap parts at great cost. I once got quoted £180 + labour for a new clutch pipe just because the seal on the end was perished and the seal wasn't available separately.  I cut my own seal down from a spare bigger one I had as come i handy for £0, fitted it and about 7 years later it's still going.

I also had one garage not replace my alternator swivel bolt properly when they did a cam belt change, which ultimately caused vibration and wore away the internals of the alternator so that it moved and kept throwing belts off.  Then nobody could get me a new alternator that actually fitted.  I ended up taking the old one to work, getting the hole bored and sleeved and re-fitted.   Not thrown a belt off since and that was about 5 years ago.

That said, I also sometimes do chuck it in the garage if I don't have time or the inclination to do the work OR if it's going to take me 2 days compared to 2 hours because I don't have the tools or access.  Doing a clutch change on my back on my daily car wasn't ever going to happen for example.

I also find that if you do get to know the car, the state everything is in and do some work on it, garages are far less likely to try it on with you....

I have the mirror project going on right now but I also have a couple of other things happening, one of which is FL taillights :) Got a matching pair now so will be sorting bulb holders ASAP.

Should look good once they're in.

I quite fancy a pair of those (LED high?) for my FL SEL which has the standard LED (low?). Cheeky request but I don't suppose you know if much is needed other than a straight swap?

So what is the actual service schedules that Skoda offer, I cant see anything on their site that says what service and work should be carried out each year?. I think I saw someone say they do just 3 service types, Oil change, Interim, and Full?

You think £179 is excessively expensive? Just out of curiosity, what car did you have before the Octavia?

Whilst £179 isn't cheap, it also isn't unreasonable, especially when you compare it to other manufacturers. We have it good with Skoda dealers in terms of pricing. If you want a scare you don't even need to go as far as the premium brands such as Mercedes. Nissan are expensive, as too are the Korean's (Hyundai and KIA etc.), plus many more.

The independent garage who quoted you might be half the price, but you don't get a new courtesy car to run around in, or get picked up and dropped off from your place of work, or free coffee, a subsidised cafe, free wifi, somewhere warm, clean and dry to sit. It is also rare to get a proper diagnostic check, or access to Skoda UK's software updates. Most don't wash or vacuum your car either. They don't have to pay Skoda UK for membership of the franchise, or are forced to use proper tools and equipment, or put their staff through training and development courses. None of this comes for free.

I'm not suggesting there aren't independent garages out there that don't offer a lot of the above, all I am saying is that the £179 isn't simply paying for 5 litres of oil and an oil filter.

Now swinging the other way, I am heavily critical of Skoda UK's farsical efforts of clearly communicating their service requirements. Transparent they are definitely not.

Cutting through the crap there are two types of service:

1) Minor - Oil, oil filter @ £179.

2) Major - Oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter (diesel), spark plugs (petrol) and pollen filter @ £289.

Brake fluid is on the third year, then every two years after that.

DSG, Haldex (4x4) and cambelt intervals vary by engine and model, but are all costed in addition to the basic servicing items listed above.

The timing of when you need either a minor or major service depends on whether your car is set to fixed or variable service intervals...

1) Fixed - 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first

2) Variable - up to 20,000 miles or 24 months, the car decides for itself based on the data recorded by various sensors (cold starts, journey length, speeds etc.).

The key point here is that you should NEVER pay for the £289 major service until the dealer can assure you that they're replacing all the parts listed. There is a clever Skoda caveat that they say certain parts are only fitted "if required". The extras over and above the oil and oil filter are often at 3 year or 60,000 mile intervals. A lot of main dealers will happily charge you £289 for a £179 minor service.
