We are in danger of forgetting how to drive

So following on from the help and suggestions from Breezy_Pete, I have tested my old lock on the bench and inspected the wiring in the car. It appears to be a common problem with these locks that the microswitches (4 in total) play up and this seems to be the case with mine. I was getting some very spurios resistance readings from some of the switches, therefore I shall be ordering a brand new lock. I was obviously unlucky with the second hand lock as it appears to have the same issues, so that's a lesson learned. Many thanks to Pete once again for his help.

Rapidly approaching 80 I purchased my Elroq 60 as my first venture into EV driving. As another subscriber wrote, I was pleased to take delivery at the end of November 2025 as with winter on the way, I was getting my first experience in the worst part of the year. With nobody to give me any tips I think I was happy getting about 3.5 kWh. I have barely played with settings but have turned off air con and always get above 4 kWh but in this current heatwave I have on occasions have on 6-8 mile return journeys got home achieving 5 kWh. I must say that with the heads up display I love the prompt to lift off the gas and coast. One concern I have had that didnt help with range anxiety was that a couple of times when on a long journey dropped below 20%, the 12v battery warning light illuminated. Is this normal and if so what is it trying to tell me about the 12v battery

Little update since i posted about my Superb 280 going stage 2 back in may. I have questioned the high torque figure ( 618nm) with the tuner and was assured that it's a safe map, ok i left it at that. Three days after remap, car starts burning oil without even being pushed hard. So i switched to thicker 5w40 Castrol Edge ( issue rectified) Week later i pinned it from traffic lights and car cut power after 5000rpm. Gear changes felt really rough and jerky. Questioned it with the tuner, got nowhere.... Then i found on here someone who had similar issues after going to stage 2 and they recommended speaking to Kalam at Russell Road & Racing. From start he was very helpful and informative. I decided to buy one of his dongles and run few logs for him. I was really unhappy when he run me through all the issues he found after my not so professional stage 2 remap.... 1- huge overboost in midrange that went beyond sensor capacity so we couldn't tell how much it was actually putting out 2- car running lean at certain scenarios 3- all the injectors were maxxed out to the point where one started dosing less than others 4- in other scenarios it was over fueling 5- LPFP wasn't configured properly and not providing adequate amount of fuel 6- during overboost it would loose traction in 3rd gear So yeah it hasn't been greatest of experiences and i would certainly advise anyone to do a proper research and before they give their pride and joy to some amateur who doesn't know what they doing. Luckily nothing serious happened to my superb while having the original map. Kalam has provided me fresh ECU and TCU files then with few more updated calibration maps the car is running sweet as anything, power delivery is smooth and linear, no rough upshifts or downshifts, no overheating. Best £431 spent so far 💪🏻 Old power output 390bhp and 618nm New figures after few tweaks some major some minor 405hp 550nm Also added some pops and burbles switchable by driving mode ( this is a first version of pops, they have now been brought down a bit to more OEM sound )VID_20260703_180850~4.mp4

Yea it was 5w30 valvoline oil, never used it before I just get diesel in same place for years, what's premium diesel? I thought all pumps were the same at petrol station

They're there alright! Some are so badly positioned they confuse Mk1 eyeball, let alone camera recognition.

This move has been many years in the planning and now we can't wait to get up there, fingers crossed we should be moving up in September 😀

I confirm you can fit 4x 19" wheels/tyres in the Superb Estate boot. Very convenient.

It was indeed the ABS sensor on the driver's side from wheel. Now fixed for a reasonable price at my local auto shop. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Loaded up once again. This time with about 150kg of flat pack units to fit out the new utility room. Including some panels at 2.6m long! I did put the roof bars on just in case but managed to squeeze them inside by reclining the passenger seat right back and feeding them through onto the dash.

From a high seating position in a coach I was able to spend time viewing road signs, mainly on the M25 then down to Eastbourne, I would guess a good 75% were partially or fully hidden by foliage, whoever takes responsibility for signs really should get a maintenance program in place for pruning

Not sure but generally book time for fitting downpipe, standard or aftermarket is 3-4 hours . Trackslag is getting some good reputation, as long as it works for you nobody cares about name. Yes do as much as you can afford while at it. I know it's big chunk of money in one go but definitely worth it

Change both, xenon bulbs loose brightness with time. You will have a difference in intensity. Further more, the seconde one may fail shortly after the first. It's a 10 minutes job so go for both

There is usually a date stamp on the top face of the battery negative terminal, particularly if the battery is original. Format is WW/YY - so March 2016 would be something like 10/16.

Also, new batteries require coding to manage the charging properly.

Hi Dave. There is an amber battery warning light that comes on once the charge level is down to 20% but it isn’t for the 12 volt battery. It’s just to keep your attention drawn to the low state of charge. I’ve attached a photo with that lamp illuminated. The 12v warning light is a red battery symbol just like the battery/alternator warning on a traditional petrol or diesel car. If you’re sure it was the 12v lamp I’d get it checked as that would indicate a fault.

Interesting. On my MY23 1.4TSI I haven't done any intermediate oil changes since I'm covering well below average kilometers in this particular car, only completed the dealer services as per annual schedule. I looked back on the invoices for the three services so far and the first one shows Valvoline Longlife 0w-30 was used. The following two services show VL again but no viscosity rating specified, so I don't know which they used. Anyhow, it's prompted me to ask when due for service again at the end of the year. Label under the bonnet specifies VW 508 00, so maybe they all have the same label regardless of region? My previous mk7 Golf was the same.

How old is the car?

You turbo is getting lubricated perfectly well even if it is 5w 30 FS III. They were lubricated with that for many years, or even with 5w 40 FS when Long Life oil was not used.

At each service mine has had 0w-20 long life oil(508 00 compliant), with the variable interval scheme (up to 20,000 miles or two years). It’s now at 75,000 miles and running sweetly. OK it’s not a VRS, a 1.5tsi manual 150ps, so a less powerful engine but the 0w-20 seems absolutely fine. Have you checked the battery charge/condition ? Sounds like a voltage issue causing module faults.

Six weeks of Jaecoo J8 ownership and I am very pleased. No faults at all so far and I can say that it is one of the best cars I have ever owned. Just feel sorry for the person who has bought my Superb!

Indeed that is so and you are correct. However, I can always override the ACC by applying the brake myself if I see a need arising ahead of me. Similarly I can accelerate manually as well if I should need to. I, the driver am always the one in control and ACC is my servant merely helping me.

Cars too close together is one of the biggest reasons why cars come to a halt on the Motorway for apparently no reason. Each following car has to brake harder eventually leading to stationary traffic. I can slow down well before the car realises traffic is slowing down and I am less likely to be hit from behind

That's a good question that deserves an answer! I'll check when I next get the chance and report back. Others may already know of course?

Can I ask you. When using ACC on the motorway and you come to those occasional places where there are chevrons and signs saying "Keep two chevrons apart". Where is the car in front?

After two years of software faults and three trips to the dealers, on every occasion they said everything was fixed, I have finally thrown in the towel Picking up a Jaecoo 8 PHEV today, cannot imagine it could possibly have so many problems! Last straw was when the front air vents broke, they ordered two new ones and three times I asked if they would have to take the dashboard out to fix them, and they were not sure. Picked the car up and they said software replaced at 'base level' and new vents fitted and that there should be no more problems. Drove home and checked the vents, still broken! (I know I should have checked before I left the garage) Phoned them and they said they had replaced the REAR vents! Why would I ask about the dashboard removal if it were the rears, totally useless dealers as usual. oh and the ignition came on when I opened a rear door later in the day , an original fault. btw the the mk3 superb I had a few years ago had no faults or problems in five years of ownership.
