Infotainment System Restarting endlessly

@varooom, Why @Andy585's  car is running on VW SW? Is this a mistake or this is how the new SK models will be delivered from now on?! Thx

Skoda have not yet released a standalone update so that we can check what SW Train they have used for Skoda, but I don't think they would use VW.

Maybe we need a few more people on 1900 to show their SW Train to compare?

The last release for Skoda as a standalone was 1896, after they used OTA to update to reach 1900 currently.

Skoda a lagging behind SEAT and VW, release could be any day, or a few more weeks.

  • I had so many spontaneous reboots this week with even 4 occurring on the same day that the infotainment system was practically unusable. That’s why I decided to go ahead and install 1941 yesterday.

Hi @Towline,

How did you get into the Hidden Menu to get the actual version information? I would like to check mine, also.

Thx

hold the menu button down for a few seconds 👍

Thx. I did that, but how did you manage to get the Red Hidden menu? Apologies if my previous questions wasn't too clear.
If I select "Software Versions" from the Hidden Menu I only see(different to your above screenshot):

Try holding it down for 10 seconds, that's the usual value

I have already visited them 8 times during the year. The last time (in May) they said that they had updated something, but even at the dealership's service, when I started the car, the multimedia restart happened immediately.

I started a new test today.

I connected the phone to multimedia with a cable, turning off the phone's wifi and bluetooth connection. And as a result, there was no restart during the 15-minute drive.

I should mention that I use Android Auto with a Samsung phone.

The test with the cable is positive so far, in all the trips today everything works without restarts.

Actually, that might be a real thing... A guy from the dealership told me some time ago that one way to get rid of random restarts of the infotainment is to turn off all the wireless connections on the phone (bt &wifi) and use the cable. That was for the restarts occurring just after the engine start - as it is the case for my car. And a few minutes later after the car is started, one could use the wireless connection without infotainment restarting...
I didn't have the time to test this hypothesis, and I didn't really trust the guy. That's because he mentioned as a second potential reason for the restarts, the presence of fingerprint grease on the power button of the infotainment. 🤨 That was a pill too hard to swallow for me.
He insisted that cleaning the power button made the difference on his Cupra Formentor system that didn't restart on it's own afterwards - something I found very hard to believe. Probably there was some strange coincidence with a system update, or something else...
BTW, I was wondering if the infotainment on other VAG cars (e.g. Formentor, Golf) has the same behavior with the random restarts, since it's basically the same system with different UI on top. I never had the curiosity to search their forums.

Ok, but how can such a product be launched on the market if it doesn't work as it should?  We are baking here in the forum about this problem, dealerships don't really help.  Is there a Škoda support service that registers this problem and solves it?  How is it possible that you can't make software for half a year?

Why does it need WiFi?

Is it for downloading the updates? I don't see a need for it to be switched on all the time.

Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto use Bluetooth to establish the connection and then switch to WiFi to carry the amount of data. So using a cable connection to a smartphone means that WiFi can be turned off.

What kind of question is this?

Of course the wifi connection with the phone must work! it's so convenient, sometimes I don't even take my phone out of my pocket on short trips.

As you are here @TheWanderer and you are running 1900, can you dig out your Software Train value from your Engineering menu (10 second press on Menu iirc)

Just wanted to know if yours reads SK for Skoda or VW for VW of course.

As @Andy585 is showing a VW value on his.

Just seems a bit odd that the previous car only used Bluetooth and this one seems to have the need for both to be active, weird.

TBQH I don't see the need for massive data amounts via Bluetooth

@varooomWill do in a little while, still in bed as I've just retired by force so I'm having a lay in

Don't rush, more for curiousity sake to work out what VAG are up to with their OTA's.

Seems odd he has a VW value in a Skoda 🤔

TIA

Are you thinking that there maybe compatability issues as there may be slight hardware differences between Skoda & VW group car's hardware

That's why wifi is already used for large amounts of data

I have seen this release land a few weeks back "MOI3_RECOV_R9900L" that is a tiny file, version 1920.  But I have no information on what it is for, but the filename is not looking good!

I am wondering if there has been some errors I am not aware of yet, that has caused trouble we are yet to encounter.

It could be the OTA update that has changed the Software Train from SK to VW for a few people.

I don't know, but when I bought the car, the manager proudly showed me at the introduction demonstration that CarPlay works wirelessly, and said that the latest Android phones will also work.  That's why I even changed my phone to a newer one!

I've got a Galaxy S22 Ultra and when I try to use Android Auto I get the red screen of death for AA. Connect with Bluetooth only and its fine.

The Octavia 3 does use a WiFi connection for CarPlay and Android Auto - in fact every vehicle that has CP & AA has WiFi, try looking for active WiFi with another phone when you have a wireless CP or AA connection.

Maps, music, etc. all active at the same time would be stretching Bluetooth and cause unacceptable latency hence the use of WiFi.

Sounds like a bug, several people on here have reported AA problems with some phones.

I never stream music, I use Waze for maps, my music is on a USB stick, so I could get away with just using Bluetooth.

I don't know what version of Bluetooth the car has but my phone and other tech has Bluetooth 5.2 & 5.0 respectively, so more than enough bandwidth for music and data.

CP & AA have to be designed for the worst case user, so you needing less bandwidth isn't going to change how CP & AA work.

I have the same feedback to write. After I switched all off now it is ok, no reboots.(need to mention here, esim enabled, BT and WiFi disabled)

Also there are two factors that need to be mentioned:

1st - 2 nights ago the reboots drained my battery(I got 12v battery issue on dash) so maybe the "hard reset" also helped a little bit.

2nd - the rain stoped and it was nice and sunny(temp over 25 deg., and no moisture in the air), dont want to think about it that maybe some wiring issue is here at stake that the MIB rebooted all night.

The more I think about it maaaaybe that is a OTA update maybe stuck. The MIB downloads the update, does the install, reboots, but does not get the "installed" flag and it goes into a loop...

Shame someone from skoda is not here, I would gladly apply to be a beta tester just to get those issues fixed.. :)
