  4. Hi all, we inherited a 2018 mk.3 Fabia from my in laws when they both had to give up driving last year. They said if they sold it the money would just sit in the bank until we inherited that so we might as well have the car now if we wanted it. As it was to replace and '03 Peugeot 406 with 273,000 miles on the clock we couldn't really turn it down! If it does half the miles of the 406 we'll be pleased.
  5. Unfortunately, you can't just up and buy it in small amounts. Only authorised retailers can fit most of them. I have a friend who runs a business who will do it for me, on an adhoc basis. I understand from him, that some companies will do it, but it will be quite expensive (I pay roughly £200 for just both sills and a boot scuff protection layer being done, but this does include the time outlay for proper surface preparation).

Had four CrossClimate 2's fitted a couple of days ago I've had the originals before and was a little disappointed with the winter performance as I'm a regular through the peak district in winter. I opted for Goodyear Vector 4 seasons gen 2 last time for the increased winter performance. My new Yeti still had it's Primacy 3's fitted (22k Miles) so it was a choice between the CrossClimate 2's and Vector 4 Seasons Gen 3's for me. Looking at the recent Tyre Reviews video he said the CC 2's have much improved winter performance. I dropped him a message and he said he'd go for the Michelin's. So now fitted and they do look slightly more aggressive. I'll report back once I've put some miles on.
  7. If I understood the matter correctly, it should be possible to adjust the electromechanical power steering with VCDS so that you get lighter or heavier steering. And that you can choose linear or progressive resistance. Can anyone explain how to do ? (I have my own VCDS equipment)
  8. Looking at it from a mileage standpoint I reckon that filters been on for 8500 miles so its held up ok considering. Hardly do crazy miles in the car but over the summer its been on a few trips out and around the country, over to Galway down to Wicklow etc. Within a week of me getting it back from being serviced I had another 1k miles on it! Atleast I know now to check and replace the filter more often than I had thought.

  10. Much like myself then. Admittedly my filter was fitted around December 2020 time (previous owner) but this summer has been harsh on the thing and you could tell the car was very flat in terms of throttle response, or numb if you will.
  11. Well, finally have the ride height as I wanted it so may as well throw up some pics. Before and after, very little difference but I set the front to be about 20mm lower. Well 20mm on the passengers and 15 on the drivers as the old suspension bushes made the drivers side sag a bit. Initially I had the perches in the rear but ditched them in favour of the older stiffer springs I had already. Bit much of a faff to get it sitting how I wanted. Steepish rake to the car now which is whatever to me. It rides well, doesnt come close to catching on our terrible roads and is much more stable in a corner. If you hit one of our many really bad potholes theres a slight clunk from the passengers side, otherwise perfect. I reckon its a droplink again. Also, I put in a new airfilter in April, thats it on top. Bugs and bird feathers ingrained into it. Went and got another filter and fitted it. Instantly more pep. I had fettled with the airbox and intake pipe early in the summer in a bit to reduce intake temps, basically mounted the intake trumpet lower and hacked away at the grille to aid in getting cold air into the engine easier. It did seem to keep intake temps down when you were moving but it seems a consequence of that is the filter gets clogged up much quicker.
  12. No need to be carefull, Aluminium heads use hardened valve seat inserts, even all cast iron heads have done so since the demise of leaded fuel.

  14. Check for excessive play in the valve guides, both exhaust and inlet; the former as a known wear weakness on earlier versions of this engine, the latter for damage due to recent trauma. My gut feeling/hope is that both will be OK, but worth checking while head is off. I'd chuck a new exhaust gasket at it for the sake of a few more £s. Consider hoovering out the exhaust manifold to try to remove any metallic debris that may be blocking the pre-cat to some degree.

    Oh that’s good to know! I do see a fair few Fabias around but have never looked too much at the reg. I will have to start keeping more of an eye out. The engine so far (touch wood!) has been very reliable and that seems to be the general consensus on them from most people.

    Not usually unless your Service Plan does cover it. There are different levels of service plan that even include DSG OIl Changes & Haldex. Then there are Minor / interim & Major ones that are Oil & Inspection Services and a Pollen Filter replaced if you are lucky.
  20. How many miles? It is considered wear and tear unfortunately but if it’s not done many miles they should take this into account and even the mileage from January when you first took it in. The problem is you can’t prove you’re not one of those people who go over speed bumps at the road limit and don’t hit pot holes. As long as your mileage is way below 60k which is the warranty limit then I would fight hard for getting them to replace it foc

  22. No mention was made of whether it was a plastic or metal can or even a plastic carrier bag as seen on one Youtube video. It is BS to say that filling a can over 10l breaks the Petroleum Regulations (which are about storage in any case to be pedantic) it is perfectly legal to fill, to transport and to store a 20 litre metal jerrycan with petrol.

Got a 2017 Superb Combi/Estate last month, and of course one of the first things I needed to do was plug my iPhone into it for music, calls, maps, etc. It has a Columbus head unit, so wired CarPlay is there, but there's nowhere proper to put the phone, and the cable is a bit of a mess. The car came with an ashtray (which fortunately was never used for its intended purpose). So I wanted a place to put the phone, and the ability to wirelessly charge. I didn't want a phone holder up on the dash (makes no sense when the car's screen will be displaying CarPlay), and I didn't want to put it into the arm rest storage, because I'd forget it when I got out of the car. I didn't want cables trailing about the place at all. So I wanted it visible and accessible, but discreet. I also wanted whatever I built to be fully reversible. I looked into retrofitting the proper Phone Box, but I've an iPhone 13 pro in an Otterbox case, and my wife has a 12 Pro Max, and I don't think the Phone Box will fit the larger phone. I also liked the idea of wireless CarPlay. For short journeys, I'd just hop into the car with the phone in my pocket, and it would connect up automatically for calls and music. For longer journeys, I could set the phone down to charge. Never being one to put common or economic sense before a DIY project, I decided to build my own solution. And here's what I ended up with (excuse the banding on the screen, my camera was in silent shutter mode, and the sensor's refresh rate conflicts with the screen's): You get in the car, set the phone down on a glossy black surface below the aircon controls, the phone magnetically sticks to a MagSafe charger underneath, starts charging, Then when you turn on the ignition, the phone connects to a wireless CarPlay dongle, and within 20 seconds, you're wirelessly connected. So what exactly did I build? I'll explain in the next post.

  25. Easily purchased in small quantities. eBay Amazon or others. PPF tape or sheets Or helicopter tape. From £1.99. Prep properly, dewax etc. Alcohol wipes. Also readily available. Or even nail varnish remover. Advice here from Kerbside autos. Car sprayer and refinisher retired, mostly. I Recommended using 3M PPF line, knife less tape. With the PPF you are applying.
  26. This doesn't make complete sense. Your engine produces as much power as you demand at any given moment, via the accelerator pedal. More air will go in only if you demand more power*. Only if your foot is flat to the floor will the amount of power output be beyond your control and very slightly dependent on air temperature etc. *Apologies, was only thinking of petrol engines there. Diesels will be a bit different in that respect, but still, in diesels the fuel input is controlling the power output, so same overall control in your hands/feet.
  27. What is wrong there is that often the first sign of a dirty clogged air filter is a increase in fuel consumption. Dirty air filter and you are chocking the engine. Many are best with a nice fresh OEM filter with a diesel over a restrictive K&N or such supposed performance filter. The reason many use free flowing air intakes and cool air intakes is for performance. Yes you might get more bang for your buck and use fuel, but it is efficient use. The engine running well and you are only using half the available HP / Nm on UK Speed Limit roads anyway. All works well when you are using coasting where that is available with your vehicle, up to speed and off you go getting good miles per litre. That how it rolls. Now the Oil is 0w 20 FS IV and the cold starts have much less of a penalty with a TSI with PDF.
  28. My economy has dropped by 2 to 3 mpgs since I serviced the car but it will, as I put a new air filter in every service. More air going in so more fuel being used but I would rather it that way as I take care of my cars ocd. Also tried Miller Oils this time as opposed to my usual choice of quantum. Also some oil cleaner from liqui moly to see if it that helps with the oil usage on the engine. I haven't seen a drop in economy using winter fuel as it is not that different apart from an anti waxing agent put in. But I do tend to use Vpower purely because it produces less soot for the dpf and does give me better economy overall. Plus cleans the fuel system from the inside so win win.
  29. got another 6k in on Tuesday morning, out and back earlier so less pressure on the pre work other stuff... little reminder niggle in the knee again, but other than that it was a good run. slower yhan monday, but i was bit more tired and legs were achy, the 24hr doms were setting in yesterday was a rest day, today should have been a trip out, but i slept crap and spent an hr half asleep on jr's floor again.. ill run tomorrow morning before going on site, then a decent cycle Saturday morning 🤞

  31. Avoid the 1.8, and any dsg and 4x4 cars to minimise potential extra outlay on fixes. Otherwise they're all ok and it's more down to the individual car - service history, driving style, etc.

A quick look on the Škoda UK website at teh SE Technology specs. - https://www.skoda.co.uk/new-cars/octavia/estate-se-technology It shows… Cruise control with speed limiter (i.e. NOT Adaptive Cruise Control) Keyless start/stop system (i.e. NOT Keyless Entry) So, unless you ordered ‘Full’ KESSY the doors wont open without the press of the key button; and similarly, without the option for ACC, then you have the standard CC. Do oyu have a third stalk on there left of the steering column? If not, then you don’t have ACC.

Mind you, having a 1200 litre, metal, kerosene tank at home for domestic fuel does rather put it all into perspective. EDIT Ah...further info. You CAN (no pun intended) store petrol in a metal, jerry can, with a capacity of up to 20 litres https://www.hse.gov.uk/fireandexplosion/petrol-storage-club-association.htm "What containers can I use to store petrol? The legislation allows you to store petrol in the following containers: plastic containers storing up to 10 litres metal containers storing up to 20 litres demountable fuel tank up to 30 litres Suitable portable containers are defined in Schedule 2 (para 6) and Schedule 3 of the regulations. UN approved containers are an example of such containers. More detailed information on portable petrol storage containers (PDF) is available." The PDF link is useful. Should say, my can is 20 litres not 25 as originally stated above. Now I feel better

If you have a 2017 car, the tyre sealant (can of gunk, not seal inside tyres) will probably be beyond its use by date, of course it might still work, but a dark night miles from anywhere is not when you want to be forced to see if it still works. If got to buy new can of gunk, half way to buying a space saver wheel in cash outlay anyway. But you will need a jack and wheel removal tools.
  37. No, as I wrote earlier, even cars with seal inside tyres come with a puncture repair kit, so some axxe has nicked it before you took possession. Follow Colins advice on the other channel and get yourself a spare wheel.
  38. My 2011 1.8 tsi needed new con rods and redesigned pistons when they identified high oil consumption.
  39. Any parts subject to oil starvation. Turbo, cam, bottom end crankshaft and bearing shells. Also, it important to understand that under normal circumstance, assuming the engine has not previously had the modified pistons and conrods, an oil ring only is not the recommended TPI fix per skoda. Edit: You may want to carefully consider return rights unless they are going to fix properly, and to be honest, they would probably be under water if they did so!

  41. Another big gap between posts for me! I've been doing my regular washes to keep on top of the Octavias, but a lot of time has been spent fixing various bits and pieces rather than detailing. That said, a 3rd Octavia has arrived and it's absolutely disgusting! I've tidied up a few things already, but it's going to take some time to fully clean and restore this beast; Halfway point on the engine bay; For anyone interested, I'm documenting the full restoration of the WRC car on Instagram Right, back to a leaky sunroof on the mk3, replacing ARB bushes on General Custard and cleaning up powersteering fluid leaks from the new arrival!

  43. To add in my experience, if it might help anyone - I formatted the MicroSD card to exFat (with huge big partitions, was it 128k even?) I used a SD Card adaptor I started the process and then went off to get my charger and extension cable, assuming it would be fine until I got that set up It took about 10 minutes to set up, by the time I had done so, I sat back in the car and it had finished! Thanks for the help, all seems to be well 👍
  44. @Sno_monsta I really meant have your engine removed and sent to an 'Engine Re-builder' or there is maybe some 'To be trusted' Engine builder with one sitting on an exchange basis. That is where i would expect a VW Specialist to know who to use, where a Skoda Main Dealer may not be interested in Rebuilds. There are 'specialists' in the many posts in the 1.8tsi / 2.0tsi engine failure thread.
  45. Near £5,000 supplied and fitted at a Main Dealership, but they might quote £7,500. The places your car went seem to not be much interested in getting involved.
