  1. Morning all, I once uttered the immortal line; "I'll never drive a Skoda". Having had an Octavia hatch and until recently a 23 plate octavia Estate I can honestly say I'm a convert. I'm ready to head to the train station to pick up my 20 plate Superb iV. Ex fleet, just over 100k miles in SE Technology trim. I'm very excited! I'm really looking forward to the drive home from Liverpool to South Wales. I've wanted a superb for years but it's never been on my company car list. Now I'm redundant I can finally have one. She's like new inside and out. I know 2 people that use an iV for their company car and they never charge theirs. They're Approaching 100k miles themselves and they say their car performs brilliantly. I'm dreading the 2 trains and a bus to get there but it will be so worth it!
  2. The asking price was £11500 and got it to £11000. If I was doing the minimum for an MoT, I think £200-250 would buy a pair and I swap them over. I'll be laying up the car over the next few months so I'll probably go overboard with the suspension refresh. I'll probably use this thread to keep tally costs for those curious enough.
  3. a remake of Mad Max with EVs just wouldn't be the same ;o)
  4. Full Moon last night..............
  5. Only if the expansion bottle is labelled "mit silikat" (with silica).
  6. Hydrogen ICE will be equally flexible as to where the original energy soutce comes from - eg wind or tidal etc. - in fact most hydrogen manufacturing development is based around wind at the moment, being planned near new offshore wind farm incomers.
  7. The best (non 4WD) vehicle I've ever owned for use in snow was the Citroen 2CV. Nice skinny tyres that cut through it nicely And of course Air cooled so no danger of the radiator fteezing ;o)
  8. I find it interesting how many people here(UK based) seem to be running Winter/Summer tyres/wheels. Not something I've ever thought of doing in my 40 odd years of motoring even though the whole of the UK is further North than a lot of people think (Vancouver sits at 48° 32' 17.33" N , Moscow at 55° 45' 3.59" N whilst Lands End is at 50° 04' 4.20" N and John o'Groats is 58° 38′ 14″ N,). Ok I get that on the whole we have a fairly temperate climate due the Gulf Stream and with a few exceptions (BTW well done to Scotland in the Calcutta Cup yesterday) there are few places in the UK that have bad enough weather for long enough (IMHO) to warrant regular usage of "specialist" tyres.
  9. This is about the second ever conversation I have ever had about a Nissan Leave (sic). The last one was my then neighbour apologising for parking it part across my frontage (the only way she could charge at home) and indicating that it would soon be traded in for an ICE car. Not every owner is in on the Scalextric bromance.
  10. It’s probably best that we agree to differ with regards to mixing tyres. I consider having winter/all season tyres at the front and summer tyres at the rear (or vice versa) at temps below 8c to be dangerous. Even worse if it was mixed across an axle. The mismatch in performance and grip is much worse than having summer or winter tyres all round IMO. I appreciate you're an advanced and experienced driver who can dramatically lower your speeds and increase braking distances, but I personally prefer my car to brake and steer as well as possible instead of driving around a safety issue I created. Especially when I can’t moderate how other road users drive around me. This is before we consider ECS/ABS implications or having to convince an insurance assessor that an accident wasn’t due to a mix of 3PMSF and summer tyres. I sometimes borrow a fiends mk2 Capri for a nostalgic Sunday drive. It takes me back to my teens when I had a 3.0s on barely legal 30yo tyre technology. Roundabouts in the rain were hilarious, but I don’t want even 10% of that for a daily driver now.
  11. As long as you're not driving 'enthusiastically' then there's nothing wrong with a 1.0tsi Karoq. Didn't realise it was available in an Octavia estate. Guess it's only be available in basic trims? Every engine has problems if you go looking for them, but the 1.5tsi has no more issues than any other. I've had 1.4tsi and two 1.5tsi - like your experience with a 1.0tsi, I've not a single issue with any of them. None of my family and friends have had issues with those engines either. I wouldn't hesititate to buy another. TIP - next time you read someone saying there's a problem with a particular engine, ask them what engine should you buy. And then wait for others to tell you what's wrong with that one...
  12. I'm old enough to remember sheets and blankets. Nobody needed a government campaign and a load of affirmative-action to get me to buy a "continental" quilt. I had a look, was convinced, bought one and haven't looked back. That there's so much Activist activity associated with EVs is at odds with EVs being a better solution for most people. Rushing the hesitant simply makes them sceptical, like having a pushy door-to-door double-glazing salesman, who has an amazing offer BUT ONLY IF YOU SIGN TODAY!!! FOMO (fear of missing out) is a mug's game. People will find the best solution, often by copying someone who has already found that solution and are seen to be benefitting from it.
  13. @Rooted called it, the presumption of the final sale price was predicated on them not bothering with an MoT. I decided to bite the bullet anyway, and we headed up to Bo'ness to collect the car. Car drives absolutely fine, wife was delighted. There is a strange amount of rust along the sills of the car, I'll remain optimistic that this surface stuff and due to its life spent around Aberdeenshire. It did however fail an MoT carried out on the day, as I was able to book an afternoon slot yesterday. Snapped front spring and a windscreen washer jet not working. Not the end of the world. Intent was to lay this car up for a few months to give it the once over (suspension included). So it just confirms the previous MoTs over the tired suspension. Washer jet I'll presume is a straight swap, but it does feel that the one working one appears to have a delay, and the rear washer doesn't seem to work at all. Sounds like something I may end up needing to dig deeper. Whilst the comfort setting can be a bit wallowy, it does make sense on some of the roads (especially M6 around Birmingham), so I'm in two minds about whether B6's might mar that versus the OEM Monroes. Definitely need springs though, I recall seeing posts about springs that might raise the height compared to original L&K ones, I'll have to plan that. I believe @pab567 is the guy to go to regarding the MIB stuff, so I might send him a PM shortly to plan that ahead.
  14. Those watching the ice need to also watch the solar minimums and maximums Is this why 2030 was decided to reduce CO2 by to stop the temp going up by another degree. "This discovery of double dynamo action in the Sun brought us a timely warning about the upcoming grand solar minimum 1, when solar magnetic field and its magnetic activity will be reduced by 70%. This period has started in the Sun in 2020 and will last until 2053. During this modern grand minimum, one would expect to see a reduction of the average terrestrial temperature by up to 1.0°C, especially, during the periods of solar minima between the cycles 25–26 and 26–27, e.g. in the decade 2031–2043." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7575229/ But what this has to do with buying an EV or not i am not so sure. I will buy one when i can afford it and it meets my needs.
  15. That's if you completely ignore other uses of the battery: V2H, V2L and powering AC without poisoning surrounding, etc. Moving the car is a very boring feature of EV. People ask about my EV's and I like talking about the Nissan Leaf way more due to its V2H capabilities. What makes you say that? I would go as far as say it is widely accepted that EV batteries will out last the car and have second life as stationary battery. My sources: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/electric-cars/charging/how-long-do-electric-car-batteries-last/ https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/advice-electric-cars/how-long-do-batteries-last-electric-cars https://www.nationalgrid.com/stories/journey-to-net-zero-stories/what-happens-old-electric-car-batteries
  16. Well it is Summer in the antarctic. The recovery in Winter (September) is showing reductions are pretty flat? Overall, the long-term trend in Antarctic sea ice is nearly flat. (in contrast, the glaciers and ice sheets over land in Antarctica are losing mass.) The satellite record spans more than four decades, and although the ice has shown increasing and decreasing trends over portions of that record, few of those trends have been statistically significant. Year-to-year variability has dominated, especially over the last decade. Since the year 2013, Antarctic sea ice has exhibited its highest and lowest extents in the entire record—the highest-ever winter maximum occurred in September 2014, and the lowest-ever summer minimum was in February 2023. But the overall trend, as of early 2023, is close to zero. https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/understanding-climate-antarctic-sea-ice-extent
  17. Yes. But get it done at a dealership, where they have the correct calibration machines that can do job accurately. Don't be fobbed off by them, that it doesn't need to be done, insist on it if you're getting flashed.
  18. Duck guts. 2 0 0. Two being the duck and guts, two zeros.......
  19. I just spotted something yesterday about Octopus. Never read fully then or looked now. When there are 10 million of their customers that can charge and store and feed back electricity to the grid then the electricity could be free. Lovely. Today I need 2 charges. First full charge was free. 110 miles worth. Next will be 20 kWh at 55 pence a kWh. So £11. The. Tonight free again. So happy enough with that. Looks like being a good day for BEV efficiency. Off to do the South West Coastal 300. (Scotland)
  20. Battery goes flat quicker. Thanks. AG Falco

We’re all different, but if a 10mpg difference was influencing my decision on which car to buy, I’d be thinking I need to be looking at cheaper cars. Unless covering significant annual mileage the difference in fuel costs between petrol and diesel is a rounding error in the overall running costs of a £30,000+ car.

  23. This is my old car. Happy to advise on what was done when etc. Generally the Haldex and DSG were serviced by me at the appropriate times, Haldex pump gauze cleaned, engine oil & filter changed every 9000 miles or so (I put it on to fixed servicing after the first couple of years). I think it is probably due new spark plugs but on the other hand, when you change them they still look good as new. Brakes pads are getting a bit thin IIRC. I got £9k trade in for it. Yes one front shocker went, £500 for a new one! The other side was still fine when I sold it. I also had 3 broken springs at various times - VW group springs are rubbish! I guess the 4th one had broken without me realising it. Sorry about that! Not sure why there is an issue with the washers, they were fine when I traded it in but that was early December. Some rust appeared along the sills after a prolonged encounter with a snow drift. I did treat it with rust inhibitor and repaint it, but maybe it’s come back. Definitely just surface rust though. A bit poor for a modern car! i never used comfort, almost always sport or occasionally normal on slow bumpy roads. Anyway hopefully it will be a good car for you, the engine and gearbox were as sweet as when I bought it with 9k on the clock in Sept 2016. I only changed it because I would need a new one in a couple of years and I don’t like the 2024 Superbs - I got one of the last 2023 ones.
  24. Your own ownership speaks volumes. These are keepers and very nice cars. With your Freedom privileges, offer it up on here. The low milers fetch good money. Worst case see what WBAC offers for it.
  25. Yesterday I made a trip upto RAF Mildenhall as I knew that there were 2 KC10 tankers on their way ferrying a lot of fighters on their way to bases in Italy from the states and on the way we decided to drop into Duxford to see if there was any activity going on there as well, and I saw this lovely Spitfire there in one of the hangers taking part in a "Spies in the sky" event going on there, this is one that I have spent a lot of time with back at its hangar in North Weald. Then outside on the airfield, there was this Mustang being flown by its owner. Then we carried onto Mildenhall and saw both of the KC10's landing there. These are now rare indeed as most have already been replaced by KC135's and these 2 will be gone shortly.
  26. Yeah not an option for me on OBD 11 unfortunately, i already checked.
  27. I tented with a Fabia estate and found that I could get almost as much in the car with the seats up as with them folded. Put heavy stuff across the rear seats, then fill the footwells then the boot with lighter stuff (this helps the handling) Later I did add a huge top box just to carry the Duvalay bedding rolls and some clothing.
  28. Yep from vision coding. I went for the SD, but only because i was feeling lazy.
  29. Again, not quite answering but I ran my neatly under headlining above windscreen, down behind door rubber, under glovebox, and then up, along, and down to cig lighter. Barely see the cable except where it comes down far side of infotainment screen and even then if you’re looking for it.
  30. I averaged 47mpg on a trip to Lake District from Edinburgh and back last year, short journeys you will struggle to beat 30mpg but all relevant to your driving style. It does defeat the point of having a VRS if you don't have a little fun occasionally lol
  31. Also @TheWanderer Edit inline, underscore and italic. I dip conventional headlights when I see the loom of oncoming headlights rather than waiting until I see the actual luminaires.
  32. Is it a chihuahua that you put under the false floor?
  33. Jack frost on the windows or condensation before the Double Glazing years and UPVC. All those sales people & installers and grants. & 60 years of advising to get insulation and adverts about grants and projects. Billions of public money and still houses have not enough insulation or it needs removed and replaced as did that double glazing. The good old days. Bath on a Sunday and hair washed. Frozen ceiling thawing and dripping on you. Or is that just in the North / Scotland and not the West Midlands. The land of plenty. Take the Oil & Gas revenue and close the coal mines and break the unions then allow open cast mines and when those behind them want to bale out let them taking the money and not clean up. As with the previous mining. Same with the Nuclear, leave the future generations to pay for that clean up. Have Diesel Farms and Coal Fired power ready to fire up to power the South of the UK, pay to import gas and electricity at greater costs than is produced on shore and offshore in the North of the UK because the public money thrown and Land Owners and Wind Farm investors does not matter if it actually has electricity being used or making there be energy security. All about the kidology and nobody really in the energy business ever being short of funds from customers or just tax payers that might not have Gas, Electricity or Heater Fuels available in their areas from National Utilities or the Private owned National Grid. Total nutters do not want pylons but want electricity, don't want windfarms or Battery storage, or even Nuclear plants where they have no energy security. Might as well frack the bejesus out of England and have a few years of burning it,s own resources. Pollute its own land and drinking water. Re Batteries. People and places Offgrid and with a wind turbine or solar have used old Tractor or Forklift batteries for all of my life to store what they can generate.
  34. Modern cars are bigger and heavier with wider tyres. It's not a valid argument that you managed 40 years ago rain or shine. Roads are busier, cars more capable of higher speed, people think they are indestructible (cars or drivers). Also tyre technology is more specific. A modern "regular" tyre is now summer biased. A touring tyre is arguably worse in the winter than a performance tyre yet even less likely to be swapped out. All the above feeds my theory that UK cars should come with all seasons as standard.
  35. I think it would better off going to Ecotune in Glasgow or DH Automotive in Falkirk rather than getting Racing Line/Revo OEM generic software. For Stage 2/3 there are only a handful of tuner that you can trust to do it right
  36. 1 point
With my transporter van I check all the levels every 2 k kms. Water, oil, brake fluid etc. At the same time I top up the adblue until it is full. It that’s simple. Ps…don’t get adblu on your hands…apparently. Wear gloves.
  37. All depends upon how you label the Axis? There are reasons why these topics come up in our Winter. To make people fear because the ice is melting whilst we are cold.
  38. We all breath the same air and live on the same planet which scientist tell us is under-going massive climate change. Governments can take various routes to reduce the Carbon, NOX and PM pollution and mostly I am impressed with what they have done. The UK with their subsidies for EVs and home chargers initially and now such schemes such as salary sacrifice for EV leases have been and are welcome. In combination with this we need for fuel duties to at least keep up with inflation in my view so I would like to see at least a two pence per litre rise in fuel duty next week on March 6th in the budget as well as Vehicle Excise Duties going up, which is of course scaled to CO2 emissions also broadly in line with inflation, 4% or so. So for those who run vehicles running on hydrocarbons that this sector is continual taxed more and more until the sheer economics of comparatively running an ICE compared to an EV encourages the jump to EVs. As now and increasingly those who run ICE cars subsidize those that run EVs as is happening now under UK government tax laws and many countries around the world. Banning, or taxation dis-incentivising, older EVs from cities is of course is another tool in the toolbox being used to speed up the transition. Yes I think the UK could use another carrot rather than stick ie a new scrappage scheme to get those ten year and older ICE cars off the road. So in summary I am an advocate of freedom of choice but not when in damaged my health or that of my offspring and the economic future by helping along the demise of the environment and climate which makes us unlikely to be able to feed ourselves or makes large parts of the world uninhabitable so that people are forced to migrate to those bits of land that are still habitable. Freedom has its limits when consequences of those choices massively affect us all.
  39. Problem Solved - Refrigerant Pressure Sensor had gone rogue. Changed it. Fans acting normal now
  40. And light. Which is brilliant if it does come down to needing pushed. Also great if traction / grip is lost when off camber. Slide a bit and get stopped by a verge, kerb, snow bank etc. No abs, no TC/Asr. No airbags, just drive with care or not a care in the world and die or life changing injuries or live to remember how good things were and can still be. Fiat Panda, Mini and many others FWD, RWD and sometimes AWD.
  41. I do wish that people not interested in stuff would sod off and not bother telling others how uninterested they are. Or repeat crap gleaned from others not interested or anti. I don't bother going on the internet and looking at people pro or anti vapes, pro smoking, or low sugar drinks.
  42. I have no objection to anyone running an electric car. If you can buy and run a car for peanuts, I am perfectly content and willing to cheer you on. However I DO have an objection to people campaigning to coerce me into a car of their choice. And I think that's at the root of the problem with resistance to EVs. (Not to mention a whole load of other issues.) Yeah, we bat around technical, logistical and practical issues, but IMO the core of the problem is more simple than that. There are a substantial number of people who would like to be just left alone to do their thing. (I'll call these people "Passivists".) There are substantial number of other people who insist that the Passivists, who want to be left alone to do their thing, CANNOT be left alone to do their thing, as them doing their thing causes an existential crisis for the world. I'll call people in that second group, "Activists". The Activists campaign and lobby Governments to intervene and coerce the Passivists into doing what the Activists want them to do. If the Activists don't get what they want as quickly as they want, they block roads, vandalise buildings and property, and generally make a nuisance of themselves to the Passivists. Social pressure is applied by the Activists onto the Passivists. The other side of that, is that social credit is given for compliance with the Activist agenda. (Hence we often see Avatar changes to show support for current thing.) Now the Activists don't enjoy bossing people around, their social and legal coercion is for the greater good, of course. The Activists are convinced the Passivists will thank them later. If the Passivists aren't grateful, perhaps because they are old and ignorant, then the children of the Passivists will thank the Activists, and hopefully become Activists too. Put simply: Activists are determined to force their will upon the Passivists. Passivists want the Activist to "Sod off, and leave me alone!". You can look at a load of the problems we have recently seen, and at their core, it always comes down to Activists trying to push Passivists around, and Passivists wanting the Activists to "Sod off and leave me alone!" EVs, Lockdowns, Vaccines, and doubtless many more. Digging deeper, I think there's fundamental differences in how Activists and Passivists view the world, specifically when it comes to risk, but that's heading off topic. But you can easily identify the Activists and Passivists: The Activists try and impose change, the Passivists resist it.
  43. Dangerous mix? Sub optimal maybe but no worse than driving on winter tyres for several months when the temperatures oscillate wildly around the notional switching point that people believe so religiously. Perfectly legal to change one tyre at a time (arguably not so in my country but for protectionist not safety reasons) all they would need to do is press the TPMS reset button once. I still havn't fitted my winter tyres yet, the weather hasn't justified it, I bought them down here before having lived here for any length of time, in 30 minutes I will be doing an 800km autoroute journey on standard tyres worn evenly to the TWI markers that have done 52K miles in my ownership and an unknown distance before that, its 7.5° and raining here and will be colder in the North. The winter tyres will be fitted in spring when the old ones become visibly illegal and will probably remain on rain and shine until worn out, my new circumstances do not require changing tyres with the seasons. Anyone who has driven 60's vehicles either in period or in the 70s and 80s as bangers will know how to drive to the conditions and available grip, how to modulate the power of a higher performance vehicle, todays drivers have only ever driven cars which would be very dangerous in inexperienced hands but for the traction and stability control systems, they freak out when suddenly in snow and ice they are unable to overcome their deficiencies as well, for them changing tyres with the season is sensible.
  44. An EV's traction battery is both a store for electrical energy and a thermal mass store too. Particularly when an EV's battery is pre-conditioned before a journey it will acquire thermal mass that can be used to warm the passengers as well optimise its electrical capacity for maximum absorption of electrical energy. The battery can be used to directly supply the ancillary electrical devices needs such as instrumentation, power steering etc. It does this with about 90% efficiency. The energy can be bought from renewable sources. A hydrocarbon fuel tank in an ICE car supplied an engine which converts the chemical energy in to kinetic energy which is mostly used for forward motion but also some oth is power is used to drive an alternator to provide electricity to the ever increasing electrical systems though out the car and it does this at around one third efficiency and as a secondary bi-product outputs a lethal cocktail of poisonous gases and particles and then one has to indirectly pay some despote to get some more of the stuff similar to a heroine addict getting some more smack. Yes they are both energy stores for vehicle propulsion but as technically efficient and environmental solution they cannot be much more different.
  45. Good luck to them, I think they're mad to do it but I'm not them. If they ever needed to raise the temperature they could perhaps post photos with an Ukrainian flag flying on the journey, or if they get lost, I'm sure Uncle Vlad would send a search party for them. 😁
  46. @Schtum and myself are south of Stonehaven & Blairgowrie on the East of Scotland but there are people posting that give not a clue where they are in the UK & some right at the South of the UK. This winter so far has not had much snow in the UK for many other than those further north than me and i know how have and some can struggle in winters and need to get about and Winters or All Season / All Weathers are something having even if just in the wettest or cold weather which can be anytime. PS Good to see someone like @daviemck2006 posting from Macduff. Where i grew up and where we used to get plenty snow and the only place i know where people sledged using a washing line stretcher pole as a rudder. The reason this started was because Norwegians trained in the area during WW2 and showed this way as well as teaching the Home Guard and Cadets how to ski and with a staff not ski sticks. Up there Firestone Town & Country Tyres got fitted in winter and bags of sand were put in the boot.
  47. On our 2016 car, the flaps open about 15 seconds after starting from cold and seem to remain open when idling. What happens after that I honestly don’t know. As Kete said, whether they’re open or closed, the interior noise seems to be the same.
  48. Your mechanic seems to have given you his own fair personal opinion on dampers and their fitting, note the should not. All modern cars I've seen have oversized wheels and very low profile and very wide tyres from shopping trollies to sports to hyper, it's the fashion and as it's the UK we have to go one size up on Europe apparently, then fashion is for high and heavy SUV looking vehicles. Fashion usually has little consideration for comfort. 😄 Good luck.
  49. YAWN!!!! 🤪 Slow a55 ! 😆
  50. The Goodyear Vector 4Seasons is still a good tyre and I used them on a Yeti a few years ago. However, when buying all-season tyres for our Karoq Sportline 1.5 last month, I decided against them for 3 reasons: 1. They are said by some people in the tyre trade to have thinner sidewalls than the competitors, making them more susceptible to pothole and kerb damage. 2. When I was shopping last month, the 4Seasons Gen 3 (the current tyre) was on sale in very few places; most places were still selling the 4Seasons Gen2. Moreover, according to this page, the 4Seasons Gen 3 is not being made in the 225/45 R19 size: https://www.thetirelab.com/goodyear-vector-4seasons-gen-3/ 3. Compared to more recent designs, the perfomance of the Goodyear 4Seasons is now a bit middling. See https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2023-Auto-Bild-All-Season-Tyre-Test.htm Instead I bought the Bridgestone Turanza All Season 6, the newest of the all-season designs, having gone on sale in 2023. It is nothing like the rather hard summer tyres that one is used to seeing from Bridgestone. Our Karoq with 19-inch Vega wheels came on a set of those summer Bridgestones (225/40 R19 Turanza T005) and I couldn't wait to get them off. On the Turanza All Season 6, the ride is transformed as well as the grip. For one example, sometimes I can't feel cats' eyes, only hear them. Some will say why not go for the obvious choice, the Michelin CrossClimate 2? The original CrossClimate revolutionised the all-season tyre market and is the best-selling all-season tyre in Europe. It still wins many comparative tests -- on several criteria but not all. In particular it beats all competitors on snow perfomance. Michelin optimised snow performance to a remarkable extent in moving from the original CrossClimate to the CrossClimate Plus and then the CrossClimate 2. They know their market. The tyre is aimed at all those parts of Europe that get more snow than we do and appeals to people who can use it to get snow performance almost equal to a winter tyre without the bother of swopping from summer to full winter tyres. But - and it's a big but - Michelin optimised the tyre's snow performance by reducing performance on cold wet roads, both in braking and in lateral grip. Does that suit the UK market? How many days of snow per year do you get where you live? Maybe none, maybe two or three? Now how many days are there with cold wet roads? Fifty? A hundred? The Turanza All Season 6 beats the CrossClimate 2 easily for wet braking and wet handling. That makes it a better choice for much of the UK, I suggest. However, I did not replace the 225/40 R19s with 225/45 as you are contemplating. Instead I went for 245/40 R19. That size is a Skoda-approved tyre as one of the factory fitments to Crater wheels for the 4x4 Karoq. Some dimensions: 225/40 R19 -- 89 mm sidewall height, 481 revs/km 225/45 R19 -- 102 mm sidewall height, 465 revs/km, a 3.46% increase in circumference 245/40 R19 -- 99 mm sidewall height, 469 revs/km, a 2.55% increase in circumference. A tyre does not get its final width until mounted on a rim. Widths when mounted on 8J rims will (I think - open to correction!) be 230 mm for the 225 tyre, 242 mm for the 245 tyre. So the 245 in use is 12 mm wider than the 225, not 20 mm as one might think. Thus if you choose 245/40 instead of 225/45 as you were contemplating, you will get 12 mm more width at the rim (6 mm each side) for better kerbing protection, only 3 mm less sidewall height than the 225/45 but still 10 mm more than the 225/40, so adding a useful amount to the ride improvement given by the softer all-season tyre, and a bit less of an unwelcome speedo error. 245 tyres will use a little more fuel than 225 but that will be offset by the small increase in gearing, not that you'd notice either change. In conclusion, the Turanza All Season 6 tyres in 245/40 R19 suit our 1.5 Karoq perfectly and have transformed its comfort and its grip on winter roads. I also regard their size as looking better suited to the car. You could of course get an even softer ride by fitting smaller wheels, but I didn't have the money to spend on that as well as tyres. With the right tyres the 19" wheels are quite OK. I must thank those who have posted here in the past on the tyre threads for helping me reach a good decision, particularly Carlston.
