  3. No, from what I've read in other sections of this forum, an issue can arise if the tensioner is past its best, and the vehicle is allowed to roll backwards with engine stopped and in gear. Apparently this can result in the chain jumping teeth on the chain sprocket.
  4. If they're not prepared to cover excessive oil use, you should still be protected under consumer law - nice-looking car but if the warranty they are offering is as bad as you say, I'd recommend walking (or running) away.
  5. Hi welcome to the forum, if you do go ahead with purchase, strongly advise taking it on an extended road trip, while under warranty, to check for excessive oil use. Insist on rejection for this reason being part of any warranty offered. I'd be interested in hearing of their reaction. Does the service history give any information regarding cam chain and tensioner replacement?
  6. I'm assuming that because you have an EFB battery fitted, you do have automatic stop-start - is that the case? I would consider that battery to be in good condition. It probably could benefit from a recharge, but if it is 9 years old, it's doing really well. There is usually a date stamp on the top of one of the battery terminals (MMYY)
  7. Hello, I would say that this will not be an issue, as you say, the oil will drain back from the tensioner while the engine is stopped. Just refill and restart as normal with one proviso - don't ever permit the engine to turn over in reverse direction while the cam chain tensioner is unpressurised.
  8. @Rock_BatistaIf you would like to monitor battery condition, you could buy a hand-held battery tester - not as convenient as a button press on the dash - but guaranteed to be more accurate. Just need to be aware of the designed undercharging if you have automatic idle stop-start/smart alternator.
  9. There is a test for octane rating - it uses a test engine and compares against 2,2,4 -Trimethylpentane and normal Heptane. You can buy a lab machine (for US$ 2000 😬) which, it is claimed, can give reasonably accurate results. Cheaper to buy a tank of 99 and check the knock sensor.

  12. There are suppliers who can supply a replacement key at less than 1/2 the dealer price - some branches of Timpsons (other suppliers available) for instance.
  13. Get fluid tested if it hasn't been changed since new, replace if required. Check servo operation, bleed brakes, consider new pads if badly worn. All a lot cheaper than going up in size.
  14. Topped up twice? - say 0.5 litre each top up, therefore 1.0 litres of oil used in 1500 miles. IIRC, VAG would try to claim that's 'within normal use' figures and refuse to fix anything under warranty 😒
  15. Hello Alfie, welcome to the forum. How many miles have you run since you last topped up the oil? What is your engine code? (3 or 4 letters before engine number on the registration document) Excessive oil use is unfortunately well documented on the 1.8 TSI engine. Not sure why you are not seeing smoke from the exhaust - but I suspect that's where the oil is going. Do a search on this forum using your engine code.
  16. It is possible that you will require a replacement key fob, it sounds as if your remote control function has failed. The immobiliser chip is separate from the remote control buttons and is passive (not battery powered). I believe it is possible, but a bit fiddly, to swap over the immobiliser chip into a new remote control fob.

Good afternoon @ro0ter I would think that you are fully entitled to receive any information from your cars system - plus any supporting data regarding this 'event' that the dealer responsible has in their possession. This sort of ECU failure clearly is not normal for the many battery replacements being carried out - often by the owners themselves. I am more that a little concerned by your reference to the use by the dealer of a battery support 'charging robot' during this battery replacement - this was not necessary, and I wonder if they managed to reverse the connections at some point? In any case, I would maintain that their actions have resulted in serious damage to a vehicle that was operating correctly before delivery to them. If they refuse to accept this, I would suggest engaging legal assistance.
  19. Agree, often find that bargain no brand button cells can be a waste of money. Duracell works for me - but have occasionally had relatively short life from some of them. A good idea to try and rotate use between keys too.
  20. @chris666 It's not unheard of to find a supposedly new button cell to be dead. If, as AG suggests, the red led doesn't light up with button press, try another, known good cell.
  21. I once hired a Subaru Legacy in Oregon, it had the chain-driven CVT, with the (IIRC) 8 speed steps in manual mode - I really liked it. Used it mostly in manual mode, but cooked the brakes a little bit on a very long down grade because I didn't kick it down enough on the paddles.
  22. I seem to recall that the inlet and exhaust valves remain closed in 2-cylinder mode. The cam lobes are moved away from the followers.
  23. Good God! - perhaps to be commended for attempting to keep repair costs down - but £30 an hour? Completely unrealistic! Recent quotes my wife has had for a little gardening work have been a minimum of £60 to 75 an hour.
  24. Although when I had that, the filters were blocked with a black, gritty substance (almost like iron sand) The OPs fuel filter does look like water contamination though.
  25. I suspect, but do not know for certain, that non stop-start vehicles will not have regenerative braking. I think stop start and regen braking both require EFB or AGM batteries. Without the specialised battery or charging system, there should be no need to adapt a replacement battery into the system.
