The tampax VAT was a good example where is was EU requirement to have some VAT on the product, so wrong. The common customs tariff is one area the UK got some freedom ie many items duty is 6% and not 6.5%, wow. The UK does maintain dynamic alignment, mainly due to the mess of the arrangement with the two parts of Ireland. Love the complexity. As I said before we have to be raising a good trillion pounds of indirect taxes to support the direct tax take to buy our national bills. The margins on cloths can be truly staggering. the import duties and VAT are a small part of the elements from manufacture in CN, VN or wherever to the price in the shops I have seen looking at the buy prices on import invoices to declare.

6 months sounds fair to me, in the April to September period normally we would be expecting to use less electricity and therefore the VAT makes less different. What even the more aware of us did not expect was the high prices of electricity due to the very high summer temperatures taking out so many European power station, so expensive or non existent inter European interconnector prices and our own UK power stations operating less efficiently, and therefore more expensive dure to the high UK temperature reduce our power station efficiency. Added to the above I expect millions of people in the UK to be be benefiting from balcony solar so this will clip the amount of power being used so could drive up prices for those not having balcony solar as electricity suppliers try to maintain profits on reduced sales of electricity. I think many will not by their balcony setup until next spring to wait until our sun, Sol, returns to the northern hemisphere. Octopus doing a 500w kit for £450, pay back time about 4 years I would mount the single 450w panel on one of my solar arrays to increase harvesting by about 40% to track the sun. This would relate some of my 120 w panels to fence based, couple perhaps East facing to collect morning sun and couple on West facing to collect evening sun. VAT can be reviewed and set to collect some many to pay down the massive UK debt and fund policy whilst not being too onerous to consumers.

If fuel pressure is good then maybe its the DV+ as you suspect as I assume the garage found no fault codes. Maybe run it and see if it gets worse. Alasdair

Don't you remember the likes of JRM appearing on TV and stating we couldn't reduce or remove VAT as long as we remained in the EU, claiming the EU would not allow it? All kinds of promises were made: clothing, shoes, and food would come down, thus reducing the cost of living- all big fat lies.

I would like many things, but have to take what comes my way because I am not Putin or Trump. Plans for a new Data Centre at Black Dog as a neighbour for Trump's Aberdeen golf courses and powered from the wind turbines just offshore. So regardless of his wishes they are staying. Even he can not stop the Data Centre if planning is approved. As it is he is supposed to be a fan of such things. Some can be beautifully according to him.

OK, thanks again for your help. Yes, the chugging/stumbling startup noise happened before the injector replacement. First noticed it towards the end of May (first day of really warm weather), then the injectors were replaced at the end of June, along with the carbon clean/walnut blasting. The DV+ was fitted around mid-September last year, shortly after the stage 1 remap. So... it'd been installed for around 8-9 months before the problems started. Given the unusually warm summer we've had, maybe that timescale fits with the time it likely needs a bit more oil? Or maybe they are generally supposed to last a lot longer before needing any additional maintenance. No idea.

I think we could have zero rated electricity before but coukd be wrong, what you cannot have is too many different rates ie you can have zero, super sensitive, sensitive, standard and high. I would like to see a 10% rate for public charging perhaps and other goods and maybe other rates, 15, 25 etc. I recall rates of 8, 10 12.5, 15, 17.5% we have had in the UK. In my tax collectors roll one gad to learn new fractions to work out tge tax base from the retail price. Currently 20/21 ths, but previous interestingly feactions like 40 / 47 ths. The fun never ended !

On phev it is much more difficult to access the solenoid, I tried a couple of times but finally got it to dealer to replace the whole unit and after replacement I realized they had to remove the whole tunnel to access it so I recommend not to try it on a phev

If I am honest, I don’t know. I believe it was only offered on the 2.9 APR PCP and not the 0% one though. dealer I used was Marriott Motor Group who are Suffolk based.

It is how they got the WLTP and RDE2 results that was needed and results in the VED being paid. Without these being achieved under not real world test results there would only really be Hybrids, phevs or EV,s getting manufactured by the VW Group in the lower costing non premium models. It is damn simple seeing as we are talking semi automatic boxes, change down manually if you want, or keep your toe lightly touching the accelerator.

Perhaps is better to clarify .... disengagement and re-engagement of the gearbox is always fast and smooth, no qualms with that. My problem (repeat, mine) is that with almost 40 years of driving, I am used to "engine braking" and I use such in combination with "brakes" depending on the road, speed, conditions, and my desire at the moment. The fact that some dork has decided it's a good idea to de-couple engine from transmission in an invasive, but also random way (since depending how fast you car release the skinny pedal seems to have an effect on coasting activation) and put it in the operational logic of the vehicle without any option of selection, irkes me, and lots. Especially as I have no way to disengage such setting and tailor the vehicle to MY desire, and nevermind the stupid and absurd consumption of brake pads .... No matter what others say, this is the single most stupid feature of this car for me....

I'm currently looking at purchasing a car for work, taxi driver. Only ever driven octavias 1.6 tdi and recently 1.5tsi act. Test drove a 1.0 tsi se yesterday and was surprised how well it drove, was expecting it to be sluggish with a considerably smaller engine than I'm used to. Will mainly be used short stop start journeys with an old dear and shopping in the boot with the occasional boot full of suitcases with 4 extra bodies going to the airport Bit of gogogling suggests carbon build may be an issue that'd need monitoring, anything else i need to know to help make a decision ?

Sounds reasonable to me. Start with tests and see. Was it doing it before injector replacement. Could be that one of the new ones is leaking. Can cause similar symptoms, Alasdair
