Maybe I'm cyncial but there have been many stories of the years about runaway cars and most have either ended up as something stupid like accelerator stuck in the carpet, it's just gone quiet or the driver ends up in court. So for me, balance of probability is that the driver is at it for attention or a numpty.

From a random flick through the video of a few seconds each time I hit paydirt. "best piece of advice that I ever recieved was that I had to go out and tell the world my story......................" And if no-one is listening then make up something to get their attention 😄

TBH the article is a mess of recollection, difficult to piece together what exactly happened. I agree we owed a follow up in the future. I'm genuinely interested in what happened. My guess is overloaded CAN bus caused by faulty brake pedal sensor module. Not normal brake feel, no cruise control cancel and loads of faults when scanned. This bit is also very contradictory, 2 lines one after another, in this order in the article: Did police keep the car still or not?

Hey Guys, I'm thinking about replacing my O3 Pre-FL Scout with Superb FL Scout. The dealer gave me a good loan offer for it due to the clearance of Superb 3 model(Superb 4 is coming). My O3 is perfect on 100k miles(160k km) and I'm sure I'll be very happy with the Superb as well. I wanted 280TSI engine but there wasn't such option as only 3 Superbs were left for ordering.. So will continue the TDI saga (200TDI). I've never dealt with AdBlue, but looking in YT, it's not that hard to refill it without dealer's help. Should I use the OEM AdBlue or it doesn't really matter? It will also have Virtual Cockpit, ACC, alcantara seats, Virtual pedal and some others I don't count as important I already have few accessories on my wishlist * Front and rear rubber mats * Rubber boot mat * Phone/Tablet holders for backseats, for the kids * Anything else? Most likely I'll pick it in January, so I'll need winter tires. I was thinking about all-season tires, but assuming I'll go on skiing, better having a set of winter rims and tires as well. So yeah, count it as introduction of myself

Just had a reply from my MP Karen Bradley who contacted the Department of Transport about the TMC problem we are all having. This reply is from the Minister for Roads and Local Transport Richard Holden. I understand that my colleagues at The Department of Culture, Media and Sport have spoken to Ofcom who license broadcasting radio services, to get more information on what might be behind this issue. The traffic data is provided as an additional service over broadcast radio frequencies (in particular facilitated by Global through their local FM transmitter network and over the Classic FM frequency). However the practical arrangements through which this takes place are between the data provider (Trafficmaster/Teletrac Newman) and individual vehicle manufacturers. You will need to speak to your vehicle manufacturer in the first instance to see whether they are able to offer a solution to this issue. As expected they are as much use as a chocolate raincoat and do not wish to get involved.😡😡😡

Yes, most EV's drive "gear" are actually modes. Neutral would just be zero active torque from the motor. Let's assume it to be electrical fault with the car. With ICE, one can pop auto gear selector to N or press clutch pedal. With EV, let's assume gear/mode selector inoperable, the emergency brake function also doesn't work. Brake assistance not working. But at 30mph, physical brakes should be able to slowly bring down speed of the car. There was even mention of the car slowing down to 15mph after a roundabout. The brake should be able to eventually stop the car, may be with some more zigzagging. The police leaning is part is very strange. My guess is that car continued forward in lift-off creep mode. Police turned it off or put it into P or N. He should have asked or may be too ashamed to say it for the press.

I thought that as well but writing it would have detracted from my posting. To answer the question "What would you have done" : I would not have phoned my wife. I would refuse to be photographed with a Daily Mail sad scowl. I would not be photographed parked on double yellow lines in front of a pedestrian crossing even if it was where the Police had left my vehicle. I would not say the Police leaned in and did "something" to stop the vehicle because of the obvious conclusions people would draw.

I'm pretty sure there are no gears on an EV drivetrain, well there will be reduction gears but none that are changeable or selectable gears. Selecting forward, reverse or neutral using the control you will probably call the gear lever or selector simply powers the motor windings in the forward or reverse rotation, simplified but you will understand my point. Unless there is an electromagnetic clutch in the drivetrain, one that fails safe (no power transmission) and can be isolated by removing a master key like the battery master key on a competition car every single EV will have the potential to have a runaway situation like this. The brakes will be servo assisted, that will be another electrical system, the brakes are probably nominally more powerfull than the engine torque and standing on them would I'm sure work at lower speeds but at higher speeds unless you understood exactly what to do and how imperitave it would be to do it with maximum force the friction material would glaze very quickly and boil the hydraulic fluid, most EV brakes are pre-glazed through lack of use anyway. I'm not convinced that even with servo assistance you could bring an EV to a safe halt from high speed against the torque of a runaway situation which could be far more than the software limited rated power intended to protect the battery. Hopefully the MG will have data logging, the guy might be a Walt seeking attention, this bit I loved: Mr Morrison initially called his wife in a panic to ask her to warn vehicles ahead of him that he could not stop his car. Maybe she has a helicopter! I'm sure there is more to this than is being reported especially the bit about the Flics leaning and and doing something.

My 2.0tsi will just keep coasting, unless I press the brake. Then I have the put some throttle on and come off the throttle for it to coast again. Only time it auto drops into gear is if I go slow, 15mph ish. I'm not sure what exactly triggers it, but if I coast into my road and turn 90deg into the last bit of road, it goes into gear. I don't know if thats low speed, sharp steering or what does it.

It is hardly rocket science at motorway services type locations.. A filling station has an employee or 3 in the kiosk or shop and counter. A hut as Carparks had and still do with a human allowing cars to the changing area with the driver having taken a Queuing ticket with a number at the barrier as they enter the parking area will do fine at busy chargers. They are making enough money to pay a charger attendant £15 an hour. Like a number you get at a fast food place to tell you your order is ready.

I certainly hope that it never gets to that, but it is a possibility, they need to ramp up the infrastructure massively.

Hopefully this story will be followed up on. Making an assumption it's a std car and hasn't been adapted in anyway for mobility, I'm not sure what I'd have done. Must admit tho, calling the wife so she could warn the traffic ahead wouldn't have entered my mind. According to the story it's not just the driver who experienced this, the police were also unable to stop the car - they only did so by blocking it's path. And when the AA say they were frightened to start it... Always looking for fault in everything Toot. Looks very familiar. It's the layby outside the Renault dealer in Bishopbriggs ( where I bought a Clio from some years ago ). There may be a double yellow line along that section of the road. You'll know better than anyone about rules surrounding disability - I was under the impression disability badge holders could park on double yellows in Scotland so if he has a badge then it's all legal. No need to call the police, no need to call the fraud squad, no need to call HMRC Mind you if his car is £ecked, what other option is there? I certainly wouldn't drive it after that experience.

A lull at work has allowed me more time to engage in a more regular running schedule, and I'm trying to address some bad habits I've developed. Before I recently threw a couple of old pairs of running shoes away I noticed how much wear there was on the outer edges compared to previous pairs which had displayed most wear on the ball of the foot. I have got arthritic big toes on each foot (from old injuries) and I was obviously compensating for the pain I can experience during the toe flexing, I think this was causing a misalignment in my gait that was also causing increased knee pains. For the first few runs I had to force myself to run through the toe joint pain of running on balls of my feet but it was worth it as the flexibility of my large toe joints has improved, and the associated pains in the toe joints and the knees has reduced to incidental levels without having to resort to medication. I have regained some of my running speed and it has even had a beneficial effect on just walking. A relief in more ways than one as I was beginning to think I might have cut back or even give up running. Ran along the beach today in wind and drizzle but I had the whole beach to myself for the 5km run. Quite wonderful and amazing on a metropolitan beach that, during the previous weekends hot weather, had tens of thousands of people on it .

1L per 15k km is absolutely fine and normal. Nothing to worry about. Some CUPA owners claim 1L per 2000km.. 😕

If planning on towing (instead of bike transport) then definitely get factory wiring and coding if you can. It integrates with the stability system and alters the way the car responds under extreme moves. Big safety plus.

My 1.8 coasts but disengages at much higher speeds than my 1.4 used to disengage at - but then reengages and stays engaged if I just tap the accelerator again So it can coast in ECO at the lower speed but it's a two step process

This is only for the French solution because the other provider uses the same TMC table as the previous one and this table is included in 2023 tomtom maps. I am waiting for my files to be repacked for testing.

I'm a little confused about what the discussion is. I thought one of the features of eco mode is the coasting. Are there some cars that don't do it?

When I used to use ECO, mine never came out of coasting mode going downhill and I had to shift to lower gears manually to take advantage of enging braking.

I've no idea why the car would need to break; If the slope is such that you are trying to maintain constant velocity but the car is picking up speed due to gravity, then it may need to brake.

Bosch and Varta are the same and made in the same factories but Varta are cheaper. Yuasa are also good. I've always used Varta but do have a Yuasa on my MX5.

I think the fact that the "smart" alternator stops charging when the battery is nearly full, instead of continuing to try to charge a full battery, should be better for the battery.

I've never noticed any noise from the mudflaps, though I haven't driven at very high speeds which I assume would create more noise. Even on unlimited sections of German autobahn, I've never gone above 80 mph (about 130 kph).

It’s also factually incorrect… Trafficmaster was only ever broadcast on Capital and Heart. INRIX are the provider that continue to use Classic FM. Granted they are all Global Radio brands. But only the Classic FM TMC licence was tendered via Ofcom. My assumption is Trafficmaster had a private agreement with Capital and Heart, probably predating those stations acquisition by Global.

Don't want to talk it up but maybe, just maybe there is some good news with forecasted delivery times. In April (23) I ordered my Octavia SE L DSG Estate in Graphite grey with travel assist and a spare wheel as the only extras and I've been told its now built, on its way to the docks and should be good to go for a mid November delivery. Fingers crossed for no further delays!

The transmission on the Australian 1.4tsi mk4 Octavia (and current Golf) is an Aisin sourced torque converter unit so there is no clutch as such and why it is comparatively smooth. It is a good unit and also used on the Peugeot 208/308 and equivalent Citroens. Consumption would not be quite as good as the DCT transmission around town but on the highway when the torque converter locks up there would be little to no difference. I would expect you to get better consumption on a highway run than I do with my 2014 mk3 1.4tsi because your mk4 has better aero and would also run a higher top gear. Not far behind the best of the reported consumption for the 1.5tsi but at least 'our versions' seem to have appreciatively fewer issues than are bobbing up for the 1.5tsi?

@skomazthat was what i had been looking at after your introduction to that site. Once home i will see what odd wind deflectors i have in my shed. I got a 4 door set for my Shogun in error when i needed only 2 for a 3 door and i cut down the rears to lengthen the fronts so the offcuts are someplace to just try how they might sit against the roof.

Hello Bob, what percentage was the fail? it doesn't sound as if it was by much - Try a new air filter, fresh tank of fuel and perhaps new, correctly-gapped spark plugs.

That's not much at all, i could cope with that !

I've made a similar change from a 1.4TSI to a 1.8TSI and observed the 1.8 coming out of ECO mode - but it's under situations where engine braking is required rather than just coasting , such as going down an incline (not even a hill).

Plastic engine covers may look pretty but they also trap heat. In very hot weather it's wise to discard the cover and allow greater airflow to the engine. Excessive trapped heat can/will also shorten the life of many sensitive electronic components. Yep, it may be more of a region or seasonal thing, but some of these cosmetics aren't always beneficial.

It's from 2014 so I assume it's a CUPA. It's serviced every 12 months for the last 10 years at the same Skoda garage but it's always been on the variable service interval as I do >30k km each year. 1L every 15k is not that bad in the end but my previous cars never needed a top up between services. Dealers have always said it's "within spec". As there's no signs of oil leaking it would also fit with the issue described in the threads. It's 10 years old now & hasn't missed a beat so far but will probably go in the next year or so as im waiting on a new Superb.

Hi @Gerrycan! It really doesn't take much for the economy of my car to drop quite dramatically. But, I do drive on ECO mode a lot of the time, in fact I'd say most of the time. As far as I know, the remap didn't change what happens in ECO. When I'm pootling about in ECO, I only have 250Nm to play with (same as a 1.5TSI) , plus the benefit of the Budack set up. (Though sadly no 2-cylinder mode). I'm not entirely convinced the DRIVE mode was changed, either, though I don't have reduced toque in DRIVE, so maybe it was, I dunno. But SPORT mode is different, and I seldom use that unless I need the additional performance to join a busy road and it will help me match traffic speed more easily. It really is quite brisk in SPORT mode, following the remap. Generally on my journey to work, I'm somewhere in the low to mid 40's. Only when things are quiet and the lights are with me can I break 50MPG on my commute. On a long run, 50+MPG is reasonably achievable, unless I use the extra performance or traffic is horrible, in which case it drops into the 40s. Short runs when cold are its Achilles' heel, and I get mid to low 30s on very short urban runs, no matter how careful I am.

Since returning to petrol cars after years of diesels, I'm amazed at the life of modern spark plugs. Back in the 80's I'm sure I remember having to gap and clean them every 5,000 miles, and change them every 10,00 miles! Chris
